- How To Recover Lost Animation Keys In Maya - All of My Animation Data is GONE!
Alrighty, this one got a little intense there for a minute. I was banging my head against the wall (metaphorically) because I opened up an animation file I worked on yesterday, and all of the animations on my character controls seemed to have been wiped clean! The only clue I had to go on was the fact that I had animated a couple of locators in the scene, and those still had keys!
So, if you are here on this video, good for you! You didn't give up. This same thing happened to me a couple months ago. Same thing. I opened my animation file, and the animation was gone. But that time I ended up giving up and starting over on my shot. Now I am wondering if it was the same Maya error. .
Where did the animation go?
Why do you gotta do this to me MAYA?!!!
Hopefully this helps you out! I know what you are going through. Maya is the worst, and it likes to play with your head. Just take a couple of deep breaths and watch this 3 minute video. Chances are we are dealing with the same thing!

Lifesaver! After hours of searching for a fix with no luck. Thank you!
You're Welcome!
My deadline is in two days and when I opened maya today and I saw TPose with no animation my heart stopped. Thank you for saving my life!
You’re welcome! Happy to help :)
my gratitude can't be expressed
Thanks SO Much mate! Worked for me and I've been cursing at maya and nearly breaking my keyboard over this lol
Awesome. Nice to know I helped save a keyboard’s life 😆
you saved my life
:)
Life saver man, thank you !
You're welcome!
YOU ROCK!!
Dude you saved me!
thanks a lot, it worked :D
Awesome! Then making the video was worth it. :)
This also just worked on another issue I had..
Yesterday I was working in a file where I was skinning cosmetics to a referenced skeleton where I had merged the namespaces. Today I opened the file, and the cosmetics had all crumpled up together at the scene's origin. So I tried this trick as a hail mary, and it worked! So if you are dealing with any kind of namespace issues with it messing up your files, maybe give this a try. :)
what if you only have a binary file of the animation? is there a way to fix without opening a text file?
Hmm, This is a good question that I do not know the answer to. I always try to save in ascii so that I can edit the file if I need to. But what this fix does is essentially remove the checker for referenced namespaces. There is a namespace editor inside of Maya. It is possible that if you play around in there and with the settings in the reference editor you may be able to replicate what I did here. I hope that helps get you on the right track!
in had the same problem. i just opened the broken file, saved it as ASCII and then i followed the tuto above and it worked!
I already saved and lost 3 hours of work. Fuck me
Shoot. I’m sorry. That’s frustrating.
