It was 1978 when as a young music student, I first heard Lyle Mays play piano and keyboards with the Pat Metheny Group in concert on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit. I was astonished! He immediately became my favorite pianist of all time, and has remained so to this day.
His composing, arranging and piano/keyboard playing combined melodic sensitivity, harmonic richness, rhythmic diversity, and a remarkably fluid technique, all firmly rooted in both classical and jazz musical traditions . . . are entirely innovative.
While I never met him, I read many of his interviews and watched hundreds of his videos and remain awestruck by the modesty and humility of someone with the genius to evoke such thought, emotion and tranquility through his own music . . . music so complete in its usage of nearly the entire spectrum of compositional and improvisational elements available to musicians.
I loved and admired both Lyle's solo work and his best known collaborative work with the great jazz guitarist, Pat Metheny, beginning in 1974. Their final collaboration as the Pat Metheny Group was in 2005.
Since then, I, along with millions of other fans all over the world have longed for a PMG reunion, but unfortunately with today's news, we have already enjoyed our final "Pat Metheny Group" recording, which makes me quite sad.
But what a profoundly beautiful and soulful musical legacy he left.

He was a fav of mine and passed away the other day. I cried my eyes out when I heard the news and wrote the following. And following it is the track I listened to, to remember him by. I think it reflects a lot of thoughts about several people that have passed in my lifetime and maybe even some who haven't....yet! Love you. N JOY. Link below.
Goodbye my most dearest of friends.
Though we never met, you left an indelible mark.
One that has been carried deep in the soul for what seems like a lifetime.
Memories of dark nights, howling winds, distant thunder and heavy rain.
And amongst nature's cacophony, was you.
Playing a tune that lifted the spirit and broadened the dreams.
The world may not see the likes of you again.
But for now, rest, be at peace.
For your memory will be carried forward into the hearts of the next generations and maybe into a very distant time and place where things are more appreciated and the hearts of men more connected.
      Goodbye.
      So long.
      And thanks for the memories.
      I will cherish them forever.

Sherif Shaalan You write beautifully. (On the surface it seems odd that mere notes arranged in specific ways somehow gathers people of like minds together. But these are not mere notes. They are sighs and moans and cries and yelps and heartbeats captured and carried forward until they give voice to similar sounds inside each of us. Even still, I am amazed that it is through mere notes that I meet people so close to the heart of who I am.)

Sometimes we never really truly appreciate the contributions of the greatest musicians until they have returned home to Source Energy. I always knew that he was present, a member of Pat's group, a creator on a plane of his own, but only now that he has decided to leave us with his absence can I truly appreciate his corpus that he has left us to ponder, to love, to appreciate. This song has been played by me everyday at least 20-30 times and I still can't get enough of it. I have listened to versions by Uwe Karcher, Andre Mehmari, Dr. Guy Shkolnik, Alex Sill on guitar seemingly holding back tears as he played this song, by himself and with Pat' group. I had the pleasure to see him perform at the Greek Theatre in around 1994-1995, the entire show was nothing less than Heavenly. You are missed only in person but we have your catalog to keep us "Close to You".

Music is the key that can unlock one's inner feeling(s) that reside in some cases,
dormant in our souls till that combination of melodic genius meets the refined
precision of a master such as Lyle.
He has the ability to reach deep into our souls, and touch parts hitherto unknown.
It's an awakening of spirit, what we choose to do with this gift of course is our choosing
Appreciate, share, marvel at his use of time and space, how he shapes the very essence
of each thought, and can transfer his gift to everyone.
Some of us are more fortunate than others, when we can connect with him on a different
plain, where he bridges that gulf of time and space, it is a true connection, that we are
powerless to control, we revel in every moment, the cadence, the tenor, the timbre of
each note can take us to another dimension.
My heart and soul become one during this embrace, and the feeling is one of pure delight.
Thank you Lyle, when you gear up, there truly is a disturbance in the force, and it is heavenly, sublime.
Rest In Peace in God's grace, my friend, you are truly missed
Uwe, your gentle touch and understanding of Lyle's gift brings me to tears. Please take care,
and thank you for your wonderful tribute to a true master, be well my friend, God bless.

Hi Uwe, I have not forgotten, I just explained how I was introduced to jazz and that Lyle gets some 30% of the credit :-). These three people were pivotal *to me*, just personal experience, personal history. Also a not-very-well-known Jose Roberto Bertrami, who happened to fit into Corea-Purim-Moreira-Farrell (Joe Farrell !) aesthetics and grabs the remaining 10%.
The rest was somewhat easy, downhill :-) But since you've mentioned others, and other others .... of course there are *MANY*, really many great jazz musicians; to remain within p/kybd players, of course Herbie who is to me the greates of all (or even the greatest of all jazz musicians), of course Jarrett, Evans, and McCoy Tyner (again, just personal taste favourites) playing with Coltrane... You've mentioned Miles and Jarrett - Miles (Sketches etc) and Jarrett (in trio) were the second jazz step to me (historically) and to me they remain masters of hopelesness and melancholy, respectively, and I don't expect them to be beaten.
All these musicians (except Bertrami) are well-recognized names. Lyle - sadly - is not. And to some extent it is understandable - he hasn't made any particular breakthrough. But he is a master of piano/kybds to me and that's how I will remember him. One side of this coin is exemplified by "Close to home", other by improvisations in "Straight on Red" (for example, th-cam.com/video/rQcQu9uJEyM/w-d-xo.html or even better th-cam.com/video/exA4e3_PFPY/w-d-xo.html improvising for over 3.5 minutes !!!) or in "Song for Bilbao" (th-cam.com/video/RCPfKzIK6Wo/w-d-xo.html or th-cam.com/video/W21ZiCYzFZ4/w-d-xo.html, but I like the live "Travels" version most, it felt more spontaneous). Lyle takes ownership of time and rhythm like no other piano player I know.

What a beautiful, sensitive, faithful and musically-literate transposition of this amazing piece to solo piano. It's one of my favourite ever pieces of music, and you have done it spectacular justice here. Lyle Mays' self-titled solo album was the very first CD I ever bought (shortly after it was released in 86, when I was a teenager), and I quickly adopted this particular piece from the album as an astonishing musical accomplishment. It's been with me regularly throughout my life ever since then.
I saw PMG at London's Albert Hall around a dozen years ago, and (as they often used to do) they played two more encores well after most of the audience had departed. Those who remained (only a few dozen, and probably only those who knew about these hidden extra encores) were able to stand right next to the stage. Most people clustered around Pat, but I headed straight for Lyle. I was literally two yards or so from him as he weaved his magic on piano/keys in PMG tracks. It was probably the best music-related experience of my whole life.
And then I heard, almost by accident, about Lyle's death. Without a doubt, it's the one death - outside of family deaths, of course - which has hit me more than any other. He was sort of a Titan of music to me, and almost seemed immortal because of that. I was devastated. And your rendition of this tune does him sweet justice. Thank you.

In 1987, travelling back from Tokyo to home in Belgium, with the tape recorder on my ears during the flight... It took me two notes to fall in love with this tune. So sad to hear the passin of Lyle Mays. Discreet, humble, wonderful musician. Ever. I shook hands with him later on. Your version would be appreciated by him for sure. As it is by a simple listener like me. Bravo.
