The length of this movie is what I’ve heard people complain about, but that’s its beauty. It mirrors the long suffering desire that is never fulfilled. I cried both times I watched it.
I just can’t imagine 2 men trying to be together, to love each other, to yearn for each other the way these 2 did. My husband and I cried when we saw this film in a theater. The story reminded me somewhat of the first man I fell in love with. It’s strange, but one time when we spent a long weekend together and he had to fly back to where he was living, when I returned back home after dropping him off at the airport, that night when I undressed and opened my closet door, hanging on a hanger was the jacket he wore the weekend I admired. There was a note in its pocket. I cried a lot that night. I know this sounds made up, but when I saw the film my mouth was hanging open. I couldn’t believe it. The man I fell in love with so long ago passed away unexpectedly. Leukemia took him. I didn’t think I’d ever make it out of the grief I felt. Until a few years later when just by chance, a handsome guy tapped my shoulder. He introduced himself, then after some chit chat asked if he could buy me a drink. That was 34 years ago. Back then I thought I’d never find the guy I was meant to be with. I know how lucky I was.
I had a similar situation happen in 87. I met a man and fell madly in love with him, it was my first adult romance. I got pregnant quickly. After 6 months he had orders to transfer away, 2 months after our son would be born. He was in intelligence in the military. We were only 20. He was with me my whole pregnancy, during and after. The next 6 weeks flew by and the night before he left, we stayed up all night. Making love, then holding our son, until we said goodbye and that we really would try to do long distance. We tried. They kept sending him overseas and there was no cell phones in 1988. We agreed thru tears, that it wasn't working. He encouraged me to find love, but my love was him and my son. I was devastated and cried so much. After 8 months I met a friend of a friend, a guy who came over and was unassuming. After my birthday party he stayed and helped clean up, held my son and suddenly I felt sparks. We kissed that night then from that next day on, we were inseparable. It was not as passionate as my son's dad, but a deep love and chemistry it was, just different. He adored my son. My ex approved and said "He sounds like a helluva guy". We got married 2 years later, had a boy, and life was good. My son's biological dad died in 2011. I was so sad, and I was supported by my husband. My son grieved too, we lived states apart but they were always face timing before he died. In 2021 I lost my son at age 33, and his stepdad died 10 days later. Broken heart syndrome they said 😢. I deeply grieve all 3 of them. I'll never love like I did those men. Brokeback Mountain is a love story that is all too real, the emotions are raw, doesn't matter if they're gay or not. It hit the audience right and I cried so hard at the end, I swear I couldn't watch it now, I have my son's clothes with his scent on it. Grief just means you loved hard 💔 😢
Ahhhh I need to rewatch this one…memories of going to see it alone to a movie theater 20 miles from my house so I wouldn’t run into anybody I knew… seeing it in a packed movie theater was unforgettable…
tell please how everyone reacted to the tent scene, the hard kiss scene, and if you can point out some that audience reacted to feel free, it would be interesting to know
2:32 The way Ennis gives Jack that warning, seemingly angry but with an underlying sense of dread and fear for something happening to Jack… little subtle details of an amazing performance… 🥺

This role had sooooooooo much more importance than his role as joker. It makes me wonder if this one was more the reason why his life was cut so short. We will never know if there was a cover up.
The reason why this is such a tragic movie and so heartbreaking is that this story happened all over the world, right up to quite recently, and especially in the 1960’s when it was set. And this is still happening now in many parts of the world. Forbidden love so deep that they can’t quit each other, even though the death penalty hangs over them. This really is the most heartbreaking movie I’ve ever seen.
True to so many forms, of sexual orientation, and segregation, it's just so sad that people ever think it's okay to stop love that isn't hurting anyone.
I saw this movie whenit first came out and vowed I'd never be able to watch it again. It brought up cellar deep emotions about unfullfilled love... and I use love to mean that comes from the soul out to the universe....that is a part of my life and memory.
Omg i remember watching this movie as a teen secretly in my room in 2008, I cant believe its been that long. Btw he was right, they could have had a good life together somehow, and face all the challenges together, but again those were dangerous times, heck like I said even I had to watch this movie secretly and it was already our times
The director Ang Lee is so good at telling tragic love stories. Between this and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, you can see his artistic eye for that unyielding yearning in romance that we've all experienced.
One of my favorite movies ❤. Even as a straight woman, it relates to me on so many levels. The pain of relationships and the wanting of something you cannot have. I still cry everytime I watch this movie.
This film's a masterpiece on so many levels. Among the top reasons is Heath Ledger. As stellar as the rest of the cast was, the way Ledger communicated Ennis' pain takes my breath away.
As a gay man.. I never thought that I could see to handsome straight guys play two gay lovers and for it to be believable. This is one of her best movies made… I have had a relationship like this before and it is hard… this makes me cry every time I watch it.
@@Haggiedc2 it’s also quite sad that Hollywood and the media in general can’t caste ‘normal looking’ guys in gay roles. Why are homosexual men always handsome types, and not short fat bald guys or whatever. We all aren’t models ! Is society incapable of believing two plain men could ever fall in love with each other ?
@@nichotto Well… I do believe that attractiveness is based on a person’s preferences… however, I do see your point. I think this particular movie was cast perfectly with the whole “cowboy” thing… I think the real issues is not diversity of those on the screen, I think it is lack of diversity of the stories being told. I have worked in entertainment, done swimsuit modeling, competed etc… so I worked hard my “looks”… so my question to you… what stories can be told about 2 short, fat, bald, guy??? If it is a quality story with quality actors I would watch it….. next question… name the two actors… and I am there for it…LOLOL… I see your point
it's quite hypocritical since i hear " straight acting" is the hot thing in gay communities . i wonder : those two actors did not play gay they just played being in love and made me believe it ,but isn't a "straight acting" gay man actually a liar ???
I saw this movie in NYC with my then boyfriend at the theater. It hit me different after 20 years of heartache and the ups and down of being a gay man in this world.
This movie broke my heart. I could never, ever watch it again after the first time. In the last scene, when Ennis cried into the blue shirt Jack had worn ... my heart burst with the pain of it all for so many who don't get to live the life they deserve. And sweet Heath, gone so young. Made this movie unbearable.
For some reason I didn't see BBM when it first came out, although I had read the short story a few years earlier and loved it. But I happened upon it a month or 2 ago on HBO. It just about ripped my guts out. Being a movie buff, I guess I've seen just about every "great" movie out there - dramas, comedies, musicals, tragedies - at some point, but no movie affected me as much as this one. Over the next month and a half, 2 months I've watched it 9 times. With each viewing, I find something new - a subtle mannerism, the look in someone's eyes. I've gotten to the point where I can anticipate the 4 or 5 scenes that make me cry like a little baby and the tears begin to well up. There isn't a less-than-excellent performance by any actor, but Heath Ledger's made the movie. (What might have been...) How he lost the Oscar to Hoffmann's "impressions" of Truman Capote I just don't get. And how the movie lost to the hackneyed Crash baffles me just as much. (Actually I do know - Hollywood just loooves Capote's phony schtick and Crash's ending was all "neatly resolved," along with its studio spending millions on PR.) And, oh, that original score by Santaolalla. BBM was one of the greatest movies of all times - and let's not conflate great with the "spectacle" of a Cleopatra - one of the worst movies of all times. And Ledger's performance was as well.
There was an older man who was a regular at my bar, he told me a story of him and another man who was married. They had relations for many years hidden, 2 decades, and he got so upset he wanted to cause trouble. The man moved and blocked all contact and my friend decided to cut his losses. He was probably in his early 60s. He told me he wanted to make his relationship into a movie. It made sense that this is not uncommon and it's sad that it happens. I do believe it happens even today and I wish it would stop because people deserve to be happy.
3:34 "You have no idea how bad it gets." Watching this in 2006 as a closeted 21 year old, this line made me cry because it rang so true. I felt so alone to the point where I was truly depressed, and this movie just broke me. Definitely Jake Gyllenhaal's best performance in a movie imo.
Love is love. I'm glad people do not have to hide or be ashamed to be with someone. Nobody should have to. If it works, then you hang onto it. Because our biggest enemy is time.
_Remember this was 1963. (You'd think it would have been Ennis Del Sol's character that would have gotten him into trouble, but in the end, it was Jack Twist). Honestly, from a cinematic casting point, the movie has so many greats from Anne Hathaway to Michelle Williams, and of course Jake Gyllenhaal, and Heath Ledger. Still one of my most favorite films ever._
I'm a straight man who is a horror movie addict, I always thought this movie was just a gay cowboy movie and wasn't interested in watching it. I tell yeah, it broke my fucking heart. Fantastic film.
my favorite scene. you can seen heath's kindness shining through his eyes, and they really embody a couple that's truly meant to be together. in this scene especially you can feel how they're one another's person.
The campfire flashback was so moving. I remember my first real real love. We got together over the winter and nothing mattered at all but us. We were sick with a cold, both of us and it didn’t matter. We were together. We would try new things, go to new places in the dark of night. I got viciously sick with food poisoning and wound up in the hospital and my partner showed up, was there every day. That’s where we fell in love. We were so young. It’s over and wasn’t meant to last. That campfire scene when they were both young… I cry because I was young once too.
Ennis is such a tragic character. Jack wishes the world would accept him for who he is.. Ennis wishes he wasn't the way he is. There's something extra sad and lonely about the denial his character lives in
Jack fucking Twist was too kind for his own good. Even after blowing up in Ennis face, he puts his own needs and emotions back inside to comfort the love of his life. Absolutely killing me. Best story ever told.
This is a very emotional and tragic love story between 2 men in early America. Its an Ang Lee masterpiece and I have to prepare to be emotionally drained whenever I decide to watch this movie from beginning to end....
The way Ennis just desperately clings to Jack absolutely breaks my heart. He does love him. He does genuinely want to be with him. But that love is not stronger than the irrational but understandable fear and trauma that his father placed upon him. And it's just beyond painful to think about what these two could have had in terms of a life together if Ennis' love had been stronger than his fear. And of course, if circumstances had been different in terms of gay people being able to be together.
I have a friend in high school that I was infatuated with but didn't tell him because I didn't want to ruin our friendship. Even today we're friends. I had a feeling he knew how I felt about him and after years he said he considered me as his brother. From then on I kinda lost interest because he considered me a "brother" instead of a "friend". I didn't feel much closer as I once did.
This movie was used by bullies to make homophobic jokes when I was in middle school. Since then I never bothered watching it. After discovering myself as a gay person, I finally watched it. Now I wish I had watched sooner. Because it would've make accepting myself much easier later on.
Probably the most beautiful movie ever made. It told the story that many like jack and ennis had to live. all the way through history and even still today
Same here and I"m about to turn 70. There is never an age for love. You can meet your love early on in your 20s or in your 80s. The only time you cannot is when you are dead. So look up and be optimistic, and know that your time is perhaps still to come.

This one of those movies that I felt was objectively a great movie. Well acted, true to life dialogue, and characters having relatable human struggles.

😂
Oh wow must of been crazy
😅
tell please how everyone reacted to the tent scene, the hard kiss scene, and if you can point out some that audience reacted to feel free, it would be interesting to know
Well damn😂
I always love this line. "Its because of you I'm like this. I'm nothing, I'm nowhere"

Such incredible acting. Lost Heath Ledger way too soon, imagine the films he'd continue to do.
2:32 The way Ennis gives Jack that warning, seemingly angry but with an underlying sense of dread and fear for something happening to Jack… little subtle details of an amazing performance… 🥺
It pisses me off when people just refer to it as gay cowboy movie.
It’s a love story. A beautiful tragic love story
But gay nonetheless

He was a great and talented actor. R.I.P. ❤️💐

This role had sooooooooo much more importance than his role as joker. It makes me wonder if this one was more the reason why his life was cut so short. We will never know if there was a cover up.
his performance in this STILL blows my mind...
Its such a shame that we didn't get to see more of his work.
“I wish I knew how to Quit You”
Just Epic 😢
Yep. I feel like we can all relate to that in some way!
Gay or straight we can all relate
Yes
I'm straight and I absolutely love this movie.
Nah
Nah...
@@rzn2258 can’t relate to being straight?
This movie was ahead of its time
Maybe way behind it’s time.
More like started its time
It's one of those movies you watch once and then again and then again and each time it's as fresh as the first time. That's the sign of a great movie.
И такой же разбивающий сердце, как в первый раз.
the acting here is just next level good
Still holds up after all these years. Superb acting, dialogue and directing.
I saw this movie whenit first came out and vowed I'd never be able to watch it again. It brought up cellar deep emotions about unfullfilled love... and I use love to mean that comes from the soul out to the universe....that is a part of my life and memory.
Still one of the best goddamn movies in existence.
Deserved an oscar
Crazy it didnt win the oscar
"I wish I knew how to quit you" really resonates with me. Except it's how I feel about McDonald's and ice cream.

I always wanna rewatch this movie but I cried so badly the first time. I’ll just watch these clips in the meantime
Dope movie tho 😅
Me too! Brought up so many emotions from my past ! Brings me to tears!
Omg i remember watching this movie as a teen secretly in my room in 2008, I cant believe its been that long.
Btw he was right, they could have had a good life together somehow, and face all the challenges together, but again those were dangerous times, heck like I said even I had to watch this movie secretly and it was already our times
I will never forget the cinematography in this movie. Even on this clip. It was stunning.
It's a huge gift from God if you have a loved one to get old with, many many people don't have them including me.
Aww its ok.
I’ve always loved that flashback scene with Jack “sleeping on his feet like a horse”.. 😭😭
"There's just never enough time never" when you can't be with the one you love but try so hard to be 😮💨😭💔

One of my favorite films of all time. Simplistic, the stunning rich wilderness, the love story…easy to watch easy to absorb…
I’m so sorry for the pain ❤
@@Haggiedc2interesting ❤❤
it's quite hypocritical since i hear " straight acting" is the hot thing in gay communities . i wonder : those two actors did not play gay they just played being in love and made me believe it ,but isn't a "straight acting" gay man actually a liar ???
What fearless fucking actors. Absolutely one of the best films I have ever seen.
Love can be so painful. One of my favourite films.
I saw this movie in NYC with my then boyfriend at the theater. It hit me different after 20 years of heartache and the ups and down of being a gay man in this world.
You just made me tear
I love this movie...Jake and Heath were just incredible. I felt their pain.
Why does this still bring me to tears...
Probably because it is sad ...
Love is Love is Love!!!
By here it was the 80’s
I'm a straight man who is a horror movie addict, I always thought this movie was just a gay cowboy movie and wasn't interested in watching it. I tell yeah, it broke my fucking heart. Fantastic film.
I saw this movie at least 7 times in the theater, some times I'd be the only one there! What a joyful and tragic movie!
my favorite scene. you can seen heath's kindness shining through his eyes, and they really embody a couple that's truly meant to be together. in this scene especially you can feel how they're one another's person.
The way Ang Lee weaves this movies was just so beyond me
Im crying my eyes out
2024 and it still makes me cry.......60 year old man.
Gay, bisexual, straight whatever this is a great movie.
This is a very emotional and tragic love story between 2 men in early America. Its an Ang Lee masterpiece and I have to prepare to be emotionally drained whenever I decide to watch this movie from beginning to end....
This is the best scene they both have acted in.
This movie did a number in me. I wish everyone would watch this masterpiece.
Je suis retourné trois fois voir ce film, chaque jour et j’ai beaucoup pleuré. Merveilleux acteurs et grande sensibilité.
This movie made me cry, when I first watched. The end with Ennis and Jack's shirt is overwhelming.
This is such a great scene.,the last time they will ever see each they ..so profound...the essence of the movie
The saddest part when was Jack died, when I was watching that moment I was really crying 😭😭
I loved this movie, heartbreaking. You don’t even think of the gay-straight thing, just the love thing.
Heath Ledger was a great actor, RIP.

Same here pushing 60
Same here and I"m about to turn 70. There is never an age for love. You can meet your love early on in your 20s or in your 80s. The only time you cannot is when you are dead. So look up and be optimistic, and know that your time is perhaps still to come.

This one of those movies that I felt was objectively a great movie. Well acted, true to life dialogue, and characters having relatable human struggles. But as great as I thought it was, I could never bring myself to watch a second time. It was so well acted that Jack Twists death was like seeing my brother get killed.
