“We could’ve had a good life together, fuckin real good life! Had us a place of our own. But you-didn’t-want-it Ennis. So what we’ve got now is BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN!!!” That line always gives me chills.

Some how this movie lived up too and also completely surpassed my expectations from the shallow commentary it gets from pop culture. They gloss over the message of the film but its small moments like that which i think made it had such a big impact. “ BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN !! “ , “ I wish I knew how to quit you “ , “ Jack Nasty “ , “ Jack , I swear …” . All such simple lines but delivered to say so much

Above all else, this was a love story. And we all have felt that emotional attachment that we just cannot release ourselves from even when we know the best thing to do is to “quit” and leave. Ang Lee, the director of “Brokeback Mountain”, deserved that Academy Award. His direction got the best out of Ledger and Gyllenhaal. This was a brilliant movie!

Sadly we all haven’t had love in our lives. I certainly haven’t and at the age I am, I can’t see it coming. Love in a repressive environment certainly seems more poignant. Finding a love then as compared to now, when it’s swipe left or right and on to the next, had real meaning, or that’s how it feels,

I had an unhealthy friendship for nearly 30 years with a straight guy ( I am a gay man and as such my love for him was unrequited ) and on numerous occasions I said to myself ‘ I wish I knew how to quit x ‘. Well in the end I did quit him . That was over 2 years ago and is still painful but I am glad I did it

True, but to me this movie is a hymn to our lives as gay men too. The respect, the poetic resolve, the claustrophobic feeling of not having a real choice different from leaving, the sadness, and the glorious beauty of all this, is all there. I love this movie even it is so painful to watch. I no longer feel ashame to shed tears.

Growing up I always heard that this was the “gay cowboy” movie so I wrote it off as probably being something corny and not for me. I gave it a watch recently, and was floored at how much this movie resonated with me. I felt that Ennis was me; a man who never truly knew himself or how to express himself to others, except one lover he could never be with. A beautifully heart wrenching movie. I will never forget it.

    • @avourrito1819

In the fan artist community, there had been many redraws of the "ennis wife saw him kissing jack from inside the house" as the gay cowboy meme. Same as you, I thought this movie is just corny and packed with comedy, what I got was slow paced, full of longing and regret and grief.
Ennis is such a relatable representation of that fear and misery. As years progress, the public may be more accepting but not everyone comes from a very accepting family. I don't wanna end up like Ennis and I keep that close to my heart

This time was like Terri Gibbs
      Screaming inside my head!
      Somebody’s knockin’
But a Devil that hot and 30 something?
Well sabotage began on the spot!
      Still hiding behind my fear!
But Love and Death have one thing in common!
They only come when is your turn!
60 for me meant nothing I don’t look it!
But sure ain’t ready to be nobody’s Daddy!
      But destiny holds the key!
For all I know I got me a straight curious man?
      Question is
If you were in my shoes my friend!
      What would you do?
      Funny thing is
Not many men look like they were made for a mustache!
But this one’s is just perfect.
And here I come all these years later to bump into this movie?

There are people older than you, well into their 80s falling in love, I hear these stories all the time, you just have to be open to it. Please don’t let numbers stop you from what could be! I can't understand why some people don't just accept that people can love each other even if they are the same gender, if you don't like it , it's ok , if it's hard to comprehend, it's ok , its not your life , look the other way and let them be

I just can’t imagine 2 men trying to be together, to love each other, to yearn for each other the way these 2 did. My husband and I cried when we saw this film in a theater. The story reminded me somewhat of the first man I fell in love with. It’s strange, but one time when we spent a long weekend together and he had to fly back to where he was living, when I returned back home after dropping him off at the airport, that night when I undressed and opened my closet door, hanging on a hanger was the jacket he wore the weekend I admired. There was a note in its pocket. I cried a lot that night. I know this sounds made up, but when I saw the film my mouth was hanging open. I couldn’t believe it. The man I fell in love with so long ago passed away unexpectedly. Leukemia took him. I didn’t think I’d ever make it out of the grief I felt. Until a few years later when just by chance, a handsome guy tapped my shoulder. He introduced himself, then after some chit chat asked if he could buy me a drink. That was 34 years ago. Back then I thought I’d never find the guy I was meant to be with. I know how lucky I was.

I had a similar situation happen in 87. I met a man and fell madly in love with him, it was my first adult romance. I got pregnant quickly. After 6 months he had orders to transfer away, 2 months after our son would be born. He was in intelligence in the military. We were only 20. He was with me my whole pregnancy, during and after. The next 6 weeks flew by and the night before he left, we stayed up all night. Making love, then holding our son, until we said goodbye and that we really would try to do long distance. We tried. They kept sending him overseas and there was no cell phones in 1988. We agreed thru tears, that it wasn't working. He encouraged me to find love, but my love was him and my son. I was devastated and cried so much. After 8 months I met a friend of a friend, a guy who came over and was unassuming. After my birthday party he stayed and helped clean up, held my son and suddenly I felt sparks. We kissed that night then from that next day on, we were inseparable. It was not as passionate as my son's dad, but a deep love and chemistry it was, just different. He adored my son. My ex approved and said "He sounds like a helluva guy". We got married 2 years later, had a boy, and life was good. My son's biological dad died in 2011. I was so sad, and I was supported by my husband. My son grieved too, we lived states apart but they were always face timing before he died. In 2021 I lost my son at age 33, and his stepdad died 10 days later. Broken heart syndrome they said 😢. I deeply grieve all 3 of them. I'll never love like I did those men. Brokeback Mountain is a love story that is all too real, the emotions are raw, doesn't matter if they're gay or not. It hit the audience right and I cried so hard at the end, I swear I couldn't watch it now, I have my son's clothes with his scent on it. Grief just means you loved hard 💔 😢

For some reason I didn't see BBM when it first came out, although I had read the short story a few years earlier and loved it. But I happened upon it a month or 2 ago on HBO. It just about ripped my guts out. Being a movie buff, I guess I've seen just about every "great" movie out there - dramas, comedies, musicals, tragedies - at some point, but no movie affected me as much as this one. Over the next month and a half, 2 months I've watched it 9 times. With each viewing, I find something new - a subtle mannerism, the look in someone's eyes. I've gotten to the point where I can anticipate the 4 or 5 scenes that make me cry like a little baby and the tears begin to well up. There isn't a less-than-excellent performance by any actor, but Heath Ledger's made the movie. (What might have been...) How he lost the Oscar to Hoffmann's "impressions" of Truman Capote I just don't get. And how the movie lost to the hackneyed Crash baffles me just as much. (Actually I do know - Hollywood just loooves Capote's phony schtick and Crash's ending was all "neatly resolved," along with its studio spending millions on PR.) And, oh, that original score by Santaolalla. BBM was one of the greatest movies of all times - and let's not conflate great with the "spectacle" of a Cleopatra - one of the worst movies of all times. And Ledger's performance was as well.

There was an older man who was a regular at my bar, he told me a story of him and another man who was married. They had relations for many years hidden, 2 decades, and he got so upset he wanted to cause trouble. The man moved and blocked all contact and my friend decided to cut his losses. He was probably in his early 60s. He told me he wanted to make his relationship into a movie. It made sense that this is not uncommon and it's sad that it happens. I do believe it happens even today and I wish it would stop because people deserve to be happy.

The campfire flashback was so moving. I remember my first real real love. We got together over the winter and nothing mattered at all but us. We were sick with a cold, both of us and it didn’t matter. We were together. We would try new things, go to new places in the dark of night. I got viciously sick with food poisoning and wound up in the hospital and my partner showed up, was there every day. That’s where we fell in love. We were so young. It’s over and wasn’t meant to last. That campfire scene when they were both young… I cry because I was young once too.

The way Ennis just desperately clings to Jack absolutely breaks my heart. He does love him. He does genuinely want to be with him.
But that love is not stronger than the irrational but understandable fear and trauma that his father placed upon him. And it's just beyond painful to think about what these two could have had in terms of a life together if Ennis' love had been stronger than his fear. And of course, if circumstances had been different in terms of gay people being able to be together.
