we might not care, but they do, and so does Hollywood - an oscar-nominated and then oscar winner make significantly more money for their roles. This is irrelevant only for a select few such as Downey Jr who has profit-sharing with his marvel movies (which will continue to make him bank for years and years)

His performance in Nightcrawler completely blew my mind. Lucky for me, i didn't see any trailers or teasers and i knew nothing about the film, because it came out in a time i was busy with a lot of stuff, and one night i was free, and checked my local cinema for a movie, and this was playing in an hour, so i thought, heck why not. Holy crap that was one of the best "heck why not's" of my life. Nightcrawler was way better than i thought it would be, it totally captivated me, i was held hostage in the cinema. This doesn't happen often to me, that a movie can totally trap me like that, and it's mainly because of Jake's performance.
