I loved every second of your highly energetic and hyper-enthusiastic review of these two vehicles. Having owned a 156 Alfa, BMW 3l, Golf V & VI GTI, A45AMG and now a 5N, there was a fair amount of nostalgia in me for the Piston power but the 5N is utterly brilliant! Thanks a lot for the memory lane trip! Great work! V
Onto my 3rd EV with the N. Fabulous. Charging is not an issue. I’ve own 3 Mini JCWs, Subaru WRXs, Renault 5 GT Turbo. N is such fun. I’m sure they’ll Alfa will be a future classic, but do a test drive of the N. You won’t be disappointed
Funny enough I actually just sold my quadrifoglio, albiet a stelvio quadrifoglio. The alfa definitely has more charactor and very fun to drive. The ioniq 5n is super fast but my alfa was remapped to 600bhp so it wasn't miles apart. Don't listen to old rubbish of alfas breaking down, it has never let me down in the 3 years of ownership. The only thing I wish it had was more updated tech. The ioniq 5n has all the tech I ever need. Yes, it has a lot but once all setup you leave it and forget, so it's not constantly overwhelming as you may think. The stelvio was definitely a more sportier drive but the Ioniq 5n is a lot more comfortable for everyday driving. It doesn't have the longest of range but I have a 3 phase charger at work and top it up every couple of days. Do I miss the alfa? Hell yes! It just has so much presence and theatre around it and god do I miss the exhaust noise. Do I regret my decision to change to the ioniq 5n? Hell no! The alfa was thirsty as hell and rising costs to run takes its toll. The ioniq 5n was the only ev I would own and I did. It's fast, comfortable, practical, and much cheaper to run. With the n-eshift and sounds it can still be engaging to have a fun blast then back to normal mode for a silent and comfortable cruise. Most people who says they'll never get an ev has never driven one, and definitely never experienced the ionic 5n.
Very fair and balanced comment. Was there a huge residual loss in the Stelvio? I wonder how the loss will compare over a similar period with the N in time. Not that that has anything to do with reducing fossil fuel usage. If the Ionic is much more efficient that’s a whole other positive thing. The Alfa has so much character tho too.
In fairness, the Ioniq 5N is going to have infinitely more trouble free miles than an overclocked Alfa. 3 years is really only about 30-40,000 miles and the engine is not designed for long-term reliability, especially when being pushed past factory specs.
@jayem8981 the engine was designed by Ferrari. I think they know a thing or two about engines..Yes, running costs may be higher but what do you expect, it's a near-exotic performance car. If cost and reliability are your utmost concern, or you can only have one car, then get an EV
Great review and nice just to concentrate on how a car drives for a change. I love both of these and I think Hyundai should be commended for bringing something genuinely interesting and different to the market. Like you said, they have really shown how different an EV can be. As a car to keep, admire and feel good about life, the Alfa takes it for me. That takes nothing away from the Hyundai, it's a genuinely great car.
Good review, more honest than some who have recently realised where the market is going thanks to the law, and have suddenly decided BEV's are amazing. However, while I am intrigued by the 5N more than any other mainstream eIectric car, I suspect the "charms" of messing about with the sounds like a teenager will not last long in the memory. The weight, the hassles of ownership, and the amount it costs in depreciation will. Giulias are light, and you can really feel the difference that makes in everyday driving, it is a joy. Electric cars need to lose a lot of weight before I'm interested. Sadly, as a driver's car, the Quadrifoglio is already well past peak car for me, it's very quiet and clearly turbocharged in normal driving and while it goes like stink you really risk your license in enjoying it. While this is even more of an issue in fast 4WD EV's with their amazing traction in all weathers (not always matched by their braking/cornering/driver ability), not so long ago light cars with naturally aspirated, 6+cylinder engines could put a smile on your face at much lower speeds. And always sound great. I have a Quad, and I have a 20 year old flat 6 manual sports car worth a quarter as much, and I massively prefer driving the latter. The Quad I massively prefer driving to any EV I have tried. We're going backwards but this, people, is progress... While I appreciate there will be long term environmental benefits, I am not sold on destroying the European car industry - employers who actually have social responsibility - and switching sales to cars principally made by a county with zero social or environmental responsibility, which also happens to be a strategic threat to the West. And powers its industry with hundreds of coal mines where the workers die in their droves. But hey, this is progress........
I've owned two Alfas previously, both with stereotypical Alfa unreliability. I still love them though. There's something about them. The Alfa for me, 100 times out of 100.
good review Vicky. though I wish Porsche and co would hurry-up with their synthetic fuels, to give us the best of both worlds. I'm not convinced the UK's charging infrastructure is good enough to make the switch to EV.
The original Tesla Roadster is fast approaching 20 years AND fetching top money. Can't compare to a phone (as long as it brings more to the table then mere tech...). EV batteries last roughly as long as ICE engines... and I think the 5N is the first of a kind and might very well become a EV classic. It's not like people buy it for its range even today...
You for got to mention the N,s range . well IL tell you. 2.2 miles per Kw = 180 miles at motorway speed . So about 2 and a bit hours driving to empty the battery then 40 minutes depending on charger to top it up at 70p a kw , witch is a lot more expensive per mile than petrol. Did that Ioniq have the squeaky bumpy rear tailgate A honest revue . love the car though. its to days hot hatch to get , if you can afford it. But not on long journeys.
Indeed, however it opens up when you go past 3500rpm and sounds really juicy :) In higher temperatures you are even able to do some shoot-outs on reductions when keeping your foot on the throttle. Once you get to know it well, you can make it sound really good :)
The ioniq N is definitely interesting for an EV, but I cant justify spending 64k for something which has a shelf life on its battery. All that money is completely lost over time. Good car, it is, but special? Not really. They will continue to make better EVs for years to come, especially if we get Chinese ones. Once the shelf life expires, it gets recycled. Whereas the Giulia will give you a special experience for a lifetime and hold at least a portion of its value because of that. Not to mention its a good looking car, and beautiful cars tend to hold some amount of value. See Alfa Brera, Alfetta, GTV, spider, etc. Even the milano/75 is now sought after. Yes, a new Alfa will depreciate at first, but there is a floor to its value at least, especially a QV. Its simple, If you want a car thats going to give you memories for a lifetime, or a 2nd fun car, something you can pass down to your kids, get an Alfa. A car you can grow with and continue to learn more about as you drive it and increase your capabilities. If you want a car that just gets you from point A to B, reliably and for the lowest cost possible, or you can only have ONE car then get an EV. Most people NEED an EV, especially the non-mechanically inclined. But you WANT an ICE. Its like a "Michelin star" experience versus fast food.
100% alfa, pre 2020 though save some ££ and get a load more noise. Ionic is impressive for a electric car, I’ll wait until they get them a bit lighter!
I’ve driven the N, no the Alfa. The N is quite frankly an astonishing car, but then the Alfa probably is too! I’ll never buy either, but 20 minutes in the N was a lot of fun!
You can’t begin to buy a milk float over a Alfa Romeoaye you’ll have problems, but just open the windows and floor it,that alone puts it miles above the Korean car.

I am an ev convert but the sound and artificial gears are a gimmick that an owner will use for 5 minutes. Reviewers love it more than owners.

Another great review by one of my favorite reviewers. 👍🏽👍🏽
Hyundai had to engineer in ICE car characteristics to make the Ioniq 5 N drive, feel and fun like an ICE car. That tells me quite a bit!
Me too. Basically they’ve lost the plot. I wouldn’t use that mode at all.
Which of these will make it to 'future classic' status? My money's on the Alfa.
Someone is really enjoying the day job 😂
Vicky great review, Hyundai Ioniq 5N just amazing, but while still can would go for Alfa Romeo ❤❤❤
Best of both, get the Hyundai with the Akrapovic mp3 update. 🙃
good review Vicky. though I wish Porsche and co would hurry-up with their synthetic fuels, to give us the best of both worlds. I'm not convinced the UK's charging infrastructure is good enough to make the switch to EV.
Amazing, what a combo ❤
Both of them are wishlist cars, just impossible to choose. So if I win the lottery I might need a double garage.
I think the big difference for me is that I'd feel confident keeping the Alfa running for 20 years. Anyone still using a 20 year old mobile phone?
really? 😅that's bloody optimistic, and I'm an Alfa owner 😆

@@alfamonk😂
Maybe you are in a minority in feeling confident keeping an Alfa running for 20 years. An eternal optimist.😉
1 perfect car….the red one..
Both great cars without a question but 5 N is the future as the Ev technology will continue to evolve =3

Giulias today have particle filters which makes them more quiet

So, it's a universally acclaimed Alfa Romeo with a Ferrari derived V6, or a....a....what was the question again?
If you did your homework, you'll find that the 5N is very well received by drivers who can put their prejudices aside....
It’s not Ferrari derived, it’s just an engine designed by the same person.
Folks still yet to understand what taste is, and how it varies.
Alfa is Timeless. Some things are better the older they get.
I had the pleasure of driving it for a week. Love the handling, hated the unreliable drive train.
@@JohnLee-db9zt Except the Alfa drivetrain is not unreliable.
@ Lol, when I had the alpha for a week, it gave me a check engine light and refused to move.
@@JohnLee-db9zt That's interesting, as I've owned my Giulia for 3 1/2 years so far with no issues at all. OBTW, that's "Alfa", not Alpha.
@ Damn autocorrect! I googled the problem, and apparently this is a known problem.
Alfa for me ❤

Don't hold your breath on the "lighter" idea.
Alfa all day every day. The Alfa is a car you want, the Hyundai is a car you admire but never lust over (in my opinion).
Yes, your opinion. I lust over the 5N. I’ve driven the Alpha for a week. Fantastic car but don’t lust over it. Too unreliable.
Not sure I’d see myself lusting over a Stelantis product.
@@JohnLee-db9zt And how would you know the Alfa is unreliable?
@@jayem8981 Obviously you haven't driven the Alfa.

Love all these "reviews" in the comments from people who have never driven either car
I’ve driven the N, no the Alfa. The N is quite frankly an astonishing car, but then the Alfa probably is too! I’ll never buy either, but 20 minutes in the N was a lot of fun!
The Hyundai is not faster at all. The Alfa is nearly 15 seconds faster in lap time at the Nürburgring.
Government making it impossible to run a decent ice car to expensive
E.V.’s are a drastically depreciating item.
So are luxury cars. Having owned BMWs, Audi, and Mercedes, I can confirm.
Quadrifoglio versions are not any better. 3 year old ones cost 25-30% less than new ones.
You can’t begin to buy a milk float over a Alfa Romeoaye you’ll have problems, but just open the windows and floor it,that alone puts it miles above the Korean car.
Alfa romeo est un morceau d art !!!!!
