As I got older and got more into history, I gradually stopped consuming fiction - even nerdy stuff I've always liked. Because as I lived more of a life I realized just how magical and insane reality has always been. Not even Stephen King or GRRM could come up with some of this.
The closest I get now is historical fiction.
You want a real rabbit hole and a source for content? American Frontier History. Anything up until Wounded Knee. It goes like this:
"Okay so all the legendary stuff you heard about that got you into this either didn't happen or not at all how or why you thought it did and it probably had something to do with unresolved Civil War beef. Oh by the way here's some shit that sounds like something out of a RDR2 playthrough that actually did happen and there's a mountain of evidence for but somehow you've never heard of it or seen a movie about it. Oh yeah and all the real badasses got scrubbed from pop culture memory because Lost Cause historians smeared their memory."

There was one story you miss, he was an advisor in Vietnam. As the story goes, he arrived in Vietnam hiding his true military rank from the other advisers and government agents. And pretty much broke down how to fight a jungle war from the kind of tactics that will be needed all the way down to what type of boots that were required to do long walks in the jungle but nobody pay attention or completely ignored him. But during a documentary about the man in the 80s, one of the military advisers that was in Vietnam during the same time as him ,said if anyone had pay attention to him Vietnam wouldn’t be under the hands of the communists north.

As a "gun nerd", the quote you chose to describe the Suppressor was perfectly to my tastes... but I could definitely see how it can confuse those less familiar.
TL;DR: His 'Silencers' specialized in distorting the sound of firing so much that adversaries could not accurately determine which weapon it fired from, how far away it was fired, and often (in dense or especially night-time scenarios) *which specific direction* the shot came from.

Cobray was the company that partnered with George Ingraham to manufacture and sell the MAC-10 and MAC-11 (.45 and 9mm models respectively). The submachine guns, for maximum portability, were built without foregrips, and WerBell suppressors were sold as included accessories with 'em to provide something more substantial than a plastic strap to control the notably chaotic recoil. I unironically love the MAC series of submachine guns, with their Brutalist design cues and psychotic rate of fire. The unsavory association with a spook like WerBell, frankly, makes me love them slightly more!

interesting tidbit. the suppressor was invented by hiram percy maxim who also developed mufflers. and if that name sounds familiar its because he is the son of hiram stevens maxim, the creator of the first fully automatic machine gun, the aptly named maxim gun.
werbell falling back onto the original design principals of the suppressor and having them preform as well as they did and how similar designs do now only shows how ingenious the maxim family was.

Minor technicality. Cobray didn't buy SIONICS, Cobray was a brand name owned by SIONICS. They changed their name to MAC in 1970 after they forced Ingram and WerBell from company leadership positions. From my understanding WerBell bought the Cobray name when MAC went bankrupt in 1975 and created Cobray as a separate entity. He may have purchased the SIONICS name as well, I don't know.

The reality about the mercenary business is that there are a lot of bullshit artists involved. As one book on dangerous places (I forget the title but I remember the quote) the work is 1% reality and 99% bullshit and "the one percent really sucks." So anything that is said about the man just can't be taken seriously. The reality is those in the mercenary business don't want normal jobs. I asked someone who served as an officer in the Army if he met mercenaries and he said he did, and he told me they don't want to do 9 to 5, and it seems to be the case with this guy. Incidentally Flynn was crippled by a sniper no one caught, so there's something else to add to the conspiracy.
