Something bizarre I've noticed, is that I've seen someone from just about every corner of the political spectrum who likes or at least respects Makhno. Of course you have the libertarian socialists who like him for obvious reasons, a few weeks ago I saw a video from an unironic anarcho-capitalist praising him and the Makhnovschina... but I've also met an edgelord Catholic nationalist (who was perhaps a bit too friendly to Mussolini) who liked Makhno, as well as a pro-Russian guy who otherwise hates Ukraine but loves Makhno and the other anarchists, notably Shchus. The only ideological grouping I don't think I've directly seen someone from that likes Makhno is authoritarian leftists, but I don't doubt there's at least one auth-left who likes Makhno. Genuinely wanted to cry by the end of the video.
It's really bittersweet to see the many various dreams and desires of countless men and women, for a better living liberated from the bleak mundanity and endless toil that burdened their lives, thrusted upon a nation in a time of horrific, turmoil, the unimaginable strife of countless men who were really just lost in a certain time and place, trying to endure a chaotic time of political chaos, and eventually a bloody free-for-all, only for random chance to pick out one of the many of these random, then ignored, now forgotten masses, to have had been, if for just a moment, a living symbol of sincere hope and perseverance for all of them, people having been not much unlike him, and which had even made the privileged autocrats and juntas of the lands beyond tremble before his image, all before ultimately ending up back to being an irrelevant, impoverished nobody, having to live out the rest of his life in the same plight, the same pit of desperation and poverty that he had once broken himself out of, along with the many oppressed peasants just like him, who had fought alongside him.
At the end of the day, the many acts of sheer will, bravery, determination, and inevitable sacrifice, in spite of any and all odds of probable failure and defeat, from both him, and the many individuals in this period, and across time in general, both remembered and lost to history, often never even recognizing the impacts they would have made in their lives, and the world they would have helped to shape, merely stood in faith; the faith for a better world, created without subjugation, without any unjust authority, or oppression, was built for the happiness of all mankind, everwhere.
That ideal of progress and liberty, of equality, and reason, shared throughout the long struggles of many generations across the many peoples of the earth before us, have left their mark forever, and which had reached their children far beyond what they could have ever imagined, their collective efforts, in spite of many of their lives having been believed by many in the present to have been failures or meaningless footnotes, if remembered at all; still impact us even today, their small impacts, their countless projects, their triumphs and indeed their moments of failiure, have brought their many future generations a never ceasing inferno of light seen by all the fighters of today who challenge any and all unjustified forms of oppression, that which would beam throughout the earth, to the many currently forgotten and mistreated of the world, and who would one day complete the fight of their ancestors before them had started, a light which no dark any storm brought by any autocrat or oligarchy, no matter how absolute the power, the draconian might of any self-serving despot, or dictator, could ever hope to truly blot out forever.
Makhno, for all of his individual failings, as was true for all of us then, as much as now, was without the slightest bit of doubt, a true father to all of those who looked up to him, and an equally true grandfather for all of the freedom fighters, rebels, and partisans who still fights injustice and despotism everywhere in his name, and for it, has been memorialized in my eyes as a certified kin-... um... individual of non-hierarchical power and justified, horizontal authority! 🏴

Not something I was told as a half-ethnic-Mennonite kid, but Mennonite historians have started talking about it over the past few years.
