Starman - The Making of a Full Band Video

- I made this in the hopes of answering a number of questions I often get about audio and video production. I don't know that this is the best way to approach this type of thing, it's just how I do it.

Thank you for showing the complexity of what you do and the choices you make about the equipment and placement. I enjoy your work very much; your talent but also the fact that you seem to be independent and making for yourself and your friends on your own terms. Inspiring and satisfying to see....and I think you're pretty good at videography as well.
I like to think of myself as an OK musician, but I don't know shit about recording.
Seeing you run through all the recording equipment and techniques and stuff makes my head spin.

I've always been fascinated with your videos, and I'm SO glad you did this. Thanks for being so detailed too! I'm an equipment geek too, so hearing every aspect down to the string and pick choices was quite interesting. Hearing all about the audio and video recording equipment and process was equalling interessting. I can't believe how long all this takes! Thank you thank you thank you for sharing so much great music with us. I hope to catch you and Carson live sometime!
Well done Josh. Really appreciate the fact that you break down the tracks in order to seek authenticity in terms of production and arrangement. Bouncing to cassette and back?! Impressive... One would assume there'd be an analog plug-in suitable for the authentic sound you desire - but suspect you explored that route and opted to stay with the tried-and-true cassette bounce. Good stuff.
OK, so now we know how you did it; how come the finished product still seems like magic and sends shivers up my spine? Brilliant!

I love many of your covers this however is you best work. Can listen to this all day. It really is a "job"
I always loved the Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars album, everything on it. On my vinyl album, there's a note on the back that says, "TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME." And it sounds killer at full volume. I could never do that with any of my other vinyl albums, it's the way it was produced. I can't say exactly what that is because I don't know enough about production, but it does sound great at full volume.

Kudos to the late Mick Ronson for creating such a cool sound vibe for the "Ziggy Stardust" album--- also for the atring arrangements, soulful guitar parts, and classic guitar tones..
The album still sounds progressive almost 50 years later: RIP to Mick and Davi

Josh you are a great Technologist. Amazing & way over my head. If you ever do a record with a major record company you should handle all the engineering of the cuts. You probably would be better than anyone they could come up with. Especially since you know exactly what you are looking for in the recording.

Makes perfect sense- no different than dissecting a cadaver to learn anatomy and physiology.

Glad you touched on WHY you might make a cover. When I painstakingly do one I often sit there and ask myself why the hell I'm even doing it. You're right, it's a learning experience. I often compare it to doing a jigsaw puzzle. Why do people do such things? You know what the final version is going to look like. The picture is right there on the box! But, somehow, piecing it all together is creatively satisfying. Perhaps it's a little too personal but, would love to know about your living arrangements that you can bang on de drum all day!

Nice seeing some behind the scenes stuff. I do videos like this as well so I can relate on the video editing front. Lots of trial and error and incredibly time consuming. But worth it!
About what I expected, except for the Tascam, which was an interesting surprise. Sometimes old school just gives it that warmth.

With risk of sounding creepy, a video tour of your apt/set-up would be awesome! I'm building out a similar vibe in my prospect heights apt and (obviously) have to be pretty smart with space, reflections, storage, etc. Would love some DIY thought starters to get a sense of where I should start. Thanks Josh. Excellent as usual. I am old guy that used to record on a fast text A8 quarter inch back in the 70s and 80s. It is interesting to see how you merge your cassette recording in with your ProTools. Keep up the good work. I was hoping you did the strings remotely like you did so much in The Weight (A Thank You). I still can’t seem to figure that out.

Josh, nice to see all you’re vids. You’re a great guitar player. I record with Cubase 10 and a lot VST instruments exept for my guitars. With this video you inspire me to use more real instruments also. Great Job. Best regards from the Netherlands.

Ronson played a Les Paul on the entire album also an echoplex and composed the strings.

If anyone wants to know the same, I think they are Yamaha HS7's.
You should look into multicam editing in Premiere for syncing your tracks. It’s a big time saver and works well.
