Fortunately, you have Carson by your side, a man among men, one who can be hit in the head with a microphone taped to a string and not bust up laughing, a true professional.
Freaking yes! I said it in the "Friend of the Devil" cover and I'll say it here: Josh Turner has the hardest working Zoom H2 in the business. I've been down the equipment rabbit hole time and time again, and I am so sincere about this... after watching "Friend of the Devil," everything started to click for me. It led me to your video series on recording with the Zoom H2, and I decided to scrap all my XLR cords, USB interfaces, condensers, and line-ins, in favor of a Zoom H6 with the XY microphone similar to the H2. It's all I've been using, I've never sounded better, I'm recording an entire album with it, I'm recording in the field with it... I'm doing what I want to do for the first time which is HAVE FUN and focus on the music. It's such a "derp" concept, and I'm embarrassed that it's taken me this long to figure out, but it may be the most important lesson I've learned along the way. Much obliged for that Josh!
Wow. It shows just how versatile Josh really is. He drops us right into the middle of a 70's TV commercial, and then rick-rolls us at the same time. Simply brilliant.
As someone who has suffered with turbulent G.A.S. or Gear Acquisition Syndrome all my life; I can say this video holds true to the core values all musicians should aspire to.
Hi I take photographs (even bring them back, sometimes) and I am very familiar with 'Toggers' GAS - Chelsea & Tony Northrup (You Tube) even did a vid about it. Good to see musicians are also plagued by equipment farting, oops GAS.
@@sebxiou-av375 its a hobby-ists obsession. Pros buy the best they can afford and thats that. They stick with it until it breaks. Eventually If they need anything better they rent or borrow it for the job. I work w/clients that pay for us to rent Alexa’s and Cooke cinema lenses and a whole moving truck full of lighting and grip equipment. I couldn’t afford even a single lens myself or a single m18 light. Start thinking like a pro. Visit your local rental house or find an online one. For photography, you can rent almost any photography lens for 25-50 dollars a day. Rent on Friday and you can keep it until monday morning for 1 day fee.
As the owner of an H2, because of Josh, I can say it is an amazing piece of equipment. It is self contained and because it is it is the first choice for recording in our of the studio recordings. Top notch, reasonably priced and blow you away sound quality. Since it records in digital format you don't need an interface to get files that are immediately useable in your music or video projects. That said this is a very cute commercial, as one would expect from a true artist.
I love the old fashion ad vibe. Did you just Rick rolled us ? I would love a full cover though ! And I'm sure you can pull off the dance moves too, I've seen your Funky Town cover !
Takes me back to running educational films at my school in the mid-1950s on an RCA 16mm projector. The word choices, phrasing, and vocal tone seem stolen from those films. Bravo.
As a former radio man and a voice over artist, I've always appreciated Josh's attention to detail in the recording and mixing of his outstanding music. I'm glad he's giving his fans a glimpse of the thought, preparation, and expertise that goes into his music productions.
I bought a Zoom H4N used 7 or 8 years ago and have loved it ever since. Those sparkling highs, those creamy mid-tones, that satisfying bass,... what's not to love! Yeah, I've got a few of those million dollar mics but nothing beats my Zoom! (not sponsored) :D😎😂
The historical perspective makes this hilarious! I watch old documentaries of various things such as how the old highways were built and farming of the 30's and 40's, well done.
This channel and Reina del Cid's taught me that you can get three, four or more people recorded excellently on a single mic. I've seen so much bluegrass recorded on a single mic, it's just amazing what can be done when we learn from early recordings.
I'm glad you still have your H2. I remember commenting on your H2 on, I assume, your old Sultans of Swing video, and you replied to that comment, as I recall. My introduction to the H2 was in a corporate environment. I needed to record meetings and capture what was said, so I could call my boss out when he changed his mind about things. I was so impressed with it as a standalone recorder, but it also worked well as just a USB mic. And as a hobbyist musician, it seemed to me like it would be great for recording music also, even though that did not seem to be a selling point of it. Because I had bought that H2 on my corporate credit card, I did the right thing and left it behind when I quit. I assume they never used it again, and if they did, they by golly never appreciated it for what it was. I should have kept it. I have noticed, over the years, that you have kept using Zoom devices, but I hadn't noticed the H2 on your videos in a long time. Like I said, I'm glad you still have it. I guess I shouldn't be surprised you do. But I guess I'm surprised you're featuring it after all these years. Just goes to show how well made it was. Nice commercial also :)
I got my H2 in august 2008. Took it to many travels for fieldrecording and other tasks. It never ever failed. Pluck in power for my hydrophone is also a great feature. One of the best purchases I have ever done.
You know, Reina talked me into buyin one of those new dangled AUDIGO wireless mic’s about 4 months ago. Then I just HAD to have a Martin geetar. Whew, runnin outta moola fer sure. Now………sigh………I guess I’ll get this thingamagigee next. Thanks for the creative video! Loved it❤
What a treat! Got one in 05 for Christmas and recorded many concerts and song ideas with it. I have 3 now and my dad still has his from around 07. A terrific workhorse.
OK - My zoom H4n and two AKG414 on top of each other figure 8 90-45 degrees apart. Preddy good sound with no phase differences. There is no denying the quality of your recordings. And it was good to see you on your road trip spreading the word and keeping the faith. Namaste.
Long overdue that you make a video honoring your faithful companion! I simply love this little device. I have three of them, including the newer version. I also own the higher models like the H6, but I've always been very satisfied with the H2, which you've inspired me to use. I could learn a lot from it - thank you very much, Josh.
The H2 is a great little device, I used mine also for recording band rehearsels. The 360 capture was great: we placed it in the middle of the room, it can take the sound levels, sounds good and we could still do some instrument balancing afterward.
Bravo! I love just going direct with my bass and not messing with microphones. Watching you struggle through the sea of mic stands and cables was hilarious. Thanks for speaking some truth.
Ha! Well done Josh. The old time TV commercial gag is great... and, always impressed with the sound quality and musicianship of your videos. The H2 is indeed a dependable workhorse. Good stuff!
Ahh, you twisted my arm. I used one of these for work when they were new back in '07 (I worked in a musical instrument store) and always thought they sounded suspiciously great for such a flimsy little recorder. I got myself the newer H2n and a H4n and a shelf of mics over the years but I always kept thinking about this little silver bullet. Before I even got to the end of your video I opened up a Gumtree tab, searched Zoom H2 and bought one from a town a few hours away. It arrived yesterday in the original box and all the accessories. Here's to making music and keeping things simple.
Humor , music, friends and a Zoom H2, how can you lose. Keep going we love seeing you fellows work together.....The voice over was great as was the filming.
Love my H2 - use it for almost all my songwriting sessions. Using it on its side also gives you good separation between vocal and guitar and allows some easy rebalancing.
I’ve made countless recordings of rehearsals and gigs on the H2 and it’s great for that. The main annoyances are the awkward user interface and tiny screen. It’s easy to overload the inputs when recording at high volumes. It’s important to use the pad switch on the side in those situations. Rolling the fader down doesn’t prevent overload. I now have an H8, which is obviously much more versatile, but if all I need is a live recording the H2 works fine and can easily fit in a pocket.
very nice psa, if i am not mistaken, it records it internally, which makes it amazing for these vids you make, as you don't need a preamp or laptop to be plugged in in the middle of the field of barley
Funny and very well done, Josh! I am French, a bit... old. 😉 The first time I heard talking English was when I was a kid in the 60's and that was in ads for US movies or series. And it sounded exactly like that to my ears. 👍
Ι own an H1n and I am recording electric guitar. The sound is amazing. I use the limiter bass cutoff and auto input. Is all you need. No cables no adjustments and the sound is perfect.
Please do Yourself a favor and Trust that Zoom recorder. That was the 1st model I bought way back about 15 years ago. Used it to record my band LIVE right in front of the stage area. DAM! BAM! No bullshit. That unit does a fantastic job getting all instruments and their own tones with its built-in mics. You can even record a 4 track live, getting more room and audience. Way too easy. Fits on a stand and downloads into DAW no nonsense. Record WAV at 48 gave me the best results. I trusted Zoom for all those years I went ahead and got the H6. Holy Crap! Insane quality ! 6 tracks ! I gave away that original one and that person is still using it today to record himself writing tunes when they pop in his head. I am A Zoom Fan since these items. I Highly recommend you try any Zoom item out that has the features to fit your needs. You will be pleased.
Not exactly the point of the video but one of my favorite things is when an engineer interviews an older musician/engineer how they did x, y, or z and if they used this or that method and they respond “oh we just used whatever we had on hand that day and did 2 takes we were done”
H2 4life
Good to hear from a fellow evangelist
Haven’t tried it in a coffee mug yet but I’ll report back
Truly all you need. Simplicity.
My poor H2 died. It was a sad day. I still miss H2.
Fortunately, you have Carson by your side, a man among men, one who can be hit in the head with a microphone taped to a string and not bust up laughing, a true professional.
Truth 😅🤣🤣

1950s
Just toying with us.
I'll bet for commercials from 50s.
We need a full recording of Never Gonna Give You Up, you can't tease us like that.
They got us
I've watched countless hours of audio engineering videos on TH-cam. This may just be the best 4 minutes I've spent! You're a gift Josh!
Single mic, manual dynamics, whole take live recordings, excellent musicians
This is why I adore this channel

That was a great video, clearly you guys were having so much fun!! And we could feel it and have some as well!!
Love the film effect. Just now setting up my home studio. Old retired guys making music. You are an inspiration!
This is amazing. 🤣 That H2 ought to be in a museum in the far future.
I love the old fashion ad vibe.
Did you just Rick rolled us ? I would love a full cover though ! And I'm sure you can pull off the dance moves too, I've seen your Funky Town cover !
The genius of Josh Turner on full display!
Takes me back to running educational films at my school in the mid-1950s on an RCA 16mm projector. The word choices, phrasing, and vocal tone seem stolen from those films. Bravo.
This video was just an excuse for you and Carson to rickroll us wasn’t it? 😂
Great advice.
Great gear.
Great editing style.
Supreme comedy.
Much love.
C'mon man!
Rickrolling us in a microphone review??? Now THAT'S jumping the shark!
Well done

I love my Zoom H2. It's compact, versatile, and it gets the job done.

Hilarious. Never thought a mic review could be funny! And we got a RR in there too. A+++
I'd want to make a similar video on my Squier Mini if I were as talented as Josh.
Zoom couldn't have made a better advert. Have been using the H2n for years and am very happy with it.
I'm glad you still have your H2. I remember commenting on your H2 on, I assume, your old Sultans of Swing video, and you replied to that comment, as I recall.

Nice commercial also :)
I’ve had my H2 for over 10 years and it’s still going strong. Great and so easy to use!
I'm not even a musician but damn I want an H2 now
aku juga ingin
Now I want to hear them sing "never gonna give you up"
I got my H2 in august 2008. Took it to many travels for fieldrecording and other tasks. It never ever failed. Pluck in power for my hydrophone is also a great feature. One of the best purchases I have ever done.

I don't know a thing about recording but I chuckled quite a bit while watching this video. Well done, sir!!
Brilliant. What we've come to expect from Josh and company.
What a treat! Got one in 05 for Christmas and recorded many concerts and song ideas with it. I have 3 now and my dad still has his from around 07. A terrific workhorse.
Loved it! Funny and informative. Hard to beat that combination! 😊
I'm not even a musician, and I don't record, but I still liked this video!! DD

Man I love it when y'all make videos like these, they're so well crafted
Hysterical. 😆 Felt like listening to an ad from 1971.
I guess I’m not the only one waiting for that “Never gonna give you up” full cover. Now that you’ve just rick-rolled us, you guys owe us that
Consider it done ☺️
Double Rick rolled
I love the old timey production style of this post. Informative and Hilarious.
Long overdue that you make a video honoring your faithful companion! I simply love this little device. I have three of them, including the newer version.

When you said, "stand on it's own two feet", I was waiting for a little stand to pop out of the zoom. Maybe in the next version.
I got an H2 15 years ago for recording my (then) small children. Also have used H2s at work (radio journalism). Excellent value for money!
Ha! Well done Josh. The old time TV commercial gag is great... and, always impressed with the sound quality and musicianship of your videos. The H2 is indeed a dependable workhorse. Good stuff!

I agree with the video. I've had one since 2007 (I think). It's fabulous. And a clever made video.
Very nice, Josh and Kelly and Carson 😊😊😊.
I was never rickrolled in such a pleasant way 😁
Straight to eBay, one snapped up for £73 all in. Thanks Josh & Carlson - I think they’ll be a rush on them after this! Brilliant video
The point of the video was to learn and use what you got and not to chase gear😂
Humor , music, friends and a Zoom H2, how can you lose. Keep going we love seeing you fellows work together.....The voice over was great as was the filming.
HAHAHAHAAAAAA!!! That's pure Genius, Josh! Thanks!
You sold me a H2n a long time ago. All you recordings where amazing and you had a bunch of tutorials and tips.
Brilliant video! Love my H2

the H2 is my only mic. bought it forever ago based on your recommendation.
Funny and very well done, Josh! I am French, a bit... old. 😉 The first time I heard talking English was when I was a kid in the 60's and that was in ads for US movies or series. And it sounded exactly like that to my ears. 👍
Josh, I for one appreciate your sarcasm. Thanks for your great music
Josh, Carson, entertaining, educational, whats not to love!
Really interesting as I am not to much into appliances!
Thank you soo much!
Brilliant video. Well done
solid informational and comic production! kudos!!!!
That is, without doubt, the most sophisticated Rickroll video I have ever seen.
Ha! This is great. I have both the H6 and the H1n and they both punch above their weight.
Got mine in 2010, still does a fine hell of a job.
okay but I unironically need a Josh and Carson "Never Gonna Give You Up" now and this is also the best psa/ad/??? I've ever seen
Ι own an H1n and I am recording electric guitar. The sound is amazing. I use the limiter bass cutoff and auto input. Is all you need. No cables no adjustments and the sound is perfect.

Josh Turner Guitar, you Rock!
Excellent !!!
This ist THE VERY BEST video you put out so far!!! GREAT JOB !!!!!!!
The most enjoyable Rick-roll I’ve ever experienced. Zoom owes you money Josh. 💰🤑💸💰🤑
We’ve been Rick Rolled! 😂😂😂
This is legitimately the best video I've seen in a long time.
You are an amazing talent. I always enjoy your videos.
Yup. I have one and love it. Only issue is that we need to be in a reasonable space when using it. Enjoyed the video. Brings back sixth grade.
I did not have getting rickrolled by the Other Favorites on my bingo card.
Def going to hit Reverb for one of these. I wonder if they have a left-handed version in orange with matching boom pole?
Brilliant video...and LONG LIVE MY H2!
Toying with us, keeping us interested in one of our Other Favorites.
I feel informed and charmed
You out did yourself on this one. Awesome.
One of the best videos yet! But, keep up the music.
Had to add this to my all time favorite list!
Not exactly the point of the video but one of my favorite things is when an engineer interviews an older musician/engineer how they did x, y, or z and if they used this or that method and they respond “oh we just used whatever we had on hand that day and did 2 takes we were done”
Priceless!
I bought a Zoom H2N because of one of your videos. its a great field recorder
Ahhh... Hilarious and spot on! Brought me back to the 60's ... As in 1960's 😅
Incredible😂 if they were still making them this would have been THE best advert!
This is so close to perfect. Just needs some Winston cigarettes dangling from lips and overflowing ashtrays scaterred round. Great tips. Thanks!
😂😂😂😂, seems all the microphones aren't visible .... Otherwise thanks you guys for your endless amazing performance.
That was one elaborate Rick-Roll.
"Mothers Against GAS". Genius. 🤣
To quote the great alex brettin from mild high club “use what you got, not what you’re missing”
