  • In Part 6, I will be doing a Rear Disk Brake Conversion of my AMC 20 Narrow Track Rear Axle. This video will include the installation of the SSBC (Stainless Steel Brake Corporation) Disc Brake Conversion Kit A130-02 which is for AMC 20 housing with one piece axles. I have just recently install the 1-piece Axle Kit (MSR-CJ-S) by Moser Engineering.
    This video series will be available in a unique TH-cam Playlist and will include the following upgrades:
    - Weld the Axle tubes to the Differential Housing (strength)
    - Eaton TrueTrac LSD Differential upgrade amzn.to/3O2eSv1
    - Moser 1-piece Axle Kit upgrade (strength) www.summitraci...
    - Motive Gear Ring and Pinion re-Gear from 3.54 to to 3.73 amzn.to/37IGrsM
    - Extra Pinion Shims: amzn.to/3vuyose
    - Extra Differential Side Bearing Large Shims: amzn.to/3zLT0Ph
    - Drum to Disc Brake Conversion
    - All new Bearings and Seals amzn.to/3uBzpiQ
    - Large Bearing Separator: amzn.to/3oVvPMj
    - Slide Hammer: amzn.to/3QqHJJF
    - Feeler Gauges: amzn.to/3SuyVo3
    - Clean and Paint the Housing
    - VHT Satin Black Engine Enamel: amzn.to/3zCAJCX
    All of this is being done to prepare this axle to be reinstalled in my 1979 Jeep CJ7 which is slated to for an LS LM7 5.3L Engine swap.

    Those tags are a great idea, as a tech I used to take the keys of a car I was working on a which ever part of the vehicle i was working on and put the key on the fill place for oil, transmission whatever so I couldn't start and drive the car until I got the key from the fill spot

      @@UCanDoIt2Mike LOL!!! Having just replaced a set of drum brakes on a family members vehicle this weekend, it reminded me just how much I hate drum brake maintenance/service. Hated on the CJ too! I feel like I was doing you a service! :) It caused me to seriously considered looking into a disc brake swap for a 2009 Focus! Then I regained composure.
      Side notes: Your jeep have power or manual brakes? And will a 4 wheel disc master cylinder be necessary? I believe I used a 68 corvette disc/disc MC on mine, but there's other options if I recall. Also, may want to confirm that those brake lines do not interfere with the leaf springs. Tough to tell from the video, but looks close.

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drum brakes wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have so many dang parts. Seriously... If I answer your next question, is it going to cost me more money!!!!
      The original setup on my Jeep was manual master cylinder. I have already decided to upgrade to Power (most likely vacuum). There are kits for (Disc/Drum) and (Disc/Disc). I will need to get the Disc/Disc version now that includes a proportioning valve.
      I will double check the possible leaf spring clearance. Cheers!

    • @Danosvideos
      @Danosvideos 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UCanDoIt2Mike Knowing what I know now... I know properly matched manual brake parts are do just fine, to an extent. Extent being that rolling mass is part of the equation. My CJ came with manual brakes (drum rear) and 33" tires. Fine for the road. On the trail, pucker factor reached maximum capacity very quick. I added in a booster from a 94 YJ and a disc/drum MC, much more pleasant all around. Later went to disc/disc, using GM 1/2 ton pick up calipers and F150 rotors. Swapped in the 68 corvette MC which worked well, but could have been better had I used El Dorado calipers (which seem extremely similar to what you have).
      Seeing that you already plan to upgrade to PB, looks like I'm all done spending your money... :) Look forward to the next video!

    Nice job Mike.........SSBC is located just north of me (Elma, NY). Their products are top notch from anything I've ever heard over the years........kinda pricey, which disuades some from buying them, but the quality is reportedly very good. Sorry to hear their instructions are sketchy. I'm piecing together the same type of conversion (w/various parts) on the back of a 96' C3500 cab & chassis dually I bought a couple years ago. With duals it's kind of a hit & miss proposition as there isn't a lot out there on them........products or TH-cam info. The original GM drum backing plates are no longer available so it's kind of forcing my hand on the upgrade.......probably a better move anyway. Btw...... I sent a link to the video to SSBC directing them to pay attention to your critique at the end. They are a good quality company and it can only help them in the future......Good luck with the upgrade bud....;)

      @@UCanDoIt2Mike Yes.....been away and busy for awhile on various projects so haven't been on line all that much. Seems I'm jumping from one thing to another with no breaks in between. Being local to me, SSBC's products are very high quality so I'm sure you won't have issues with that. The phone call you described was a bit disheartening to hear (as well as the instructions), but hopefully they review the video and make some changes. Nowadays the online world can make or break you so I'm thinking they'll pay close attention. I hate to see a company produce a quality product only to drop the ball on the small stuff.

    Hi Rowdy, I am doing a complete rebuild on my 1978 Jeep CJ5. First, THANK YOU for your videos they have been beyond helpful. A question if you have time. My rear drum backing plates have an unusal emergancy brake cable mounting system. Most of the videos I watch the emergency cable just plugs into a hole. Then to the lever mechanism. Of course not mine, I have a mounting bracket on the new cable I have bought and then a rubber washer and a outside mounting bracket formed around the cable. Do you have any experience on where I might find the rubber washer and out side bracket. SOme how I have misplaced one of them. I would like to use new products if I can find them.

      @UCanDoIt2Mike  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hope you're having fun with your rebuild. Not sure if I follow the exact part you are looking for. My 1979 AMC 20 Drum Backing Plates, had a square hole in the plate where the emergency cable would penetrate. The emergency cable housing had a square rubber end that would snap into that square hole. The cable would then protrude into the drum assemble and connect to a lever. Companies that you could contact for some help would include: Quadratec, Crown, and Omix-Ada. Hope this helps. Mike

    Hey Mike thanks for all the awesome videos. Currently restoring an 82 limited down here in Augusta. I fell victim to the poor instructions of the ssbc brake installation. I put one of the backing plates on the axle incorrectly. The plate is facing forward but with a sharper angle then the other plate. I understand what situation you are probably in. The one side with the incorrect bracket orientation would leave you with a choice of a rear caliper just below center or possibly mounting it on the front upper quadrant. But to your question and predicament. I am certainly not a Brake expert and therefore would hope you take this as just information and not a recommended direction.... Nice work your doing on this project! - I'm currently installing Rear Disc Brakes on a Dana44 in a 86CJ7 - I had couple of questions about the orientation of your calipers, shouldn't the bleeder screw be on top in order to allow all the air to escape? and the inlet on the bottom? other wise the air will not bleed out of the rear calipers. And it my have been asked and answered but what proportioning valve did you use?

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great Questions.... For the Bleeder Screw.... Yes it should be on the top of the caliper to help it remove the air from the caliper's hydraulic camber. The kit that I bought, had a bleeder screw in the Banjo Bolt. If you look closely, I have two bleeder screws. The original screw and location is basically useless (to low). See 29:32. The Top Caliper port is both the fluid supply and bleeder location.
      I have not purchased my Proportioning valve yet. I am still deciding on my brake booster. My OEM setup was manual brakes. I will be upgrading to power brakes and will need to find a booster, and Disc to disc PV... hopefully in a kit form.
      Hope this helps.... Mike

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback!!!! Let me answer your question with what I know. The Old CJs never had very good brakes. There are different listings for FrontDisc/RearDrum than for Disc/Disc. My original setup was Disk/Drum. The most important part of my upgrade is that the original Proportioning Value will. It work with my new setup. It needs to be replaced with an adjustable Proportioning Value. I am also changing from a Manual MC to a Power MC. So mine is changing anyway. This could turn into a half hour lunch conversation, but my plans are to purchase a proven disc/disc solution. Speedway, MBM, and A-Team have solutions for my setup. I have not purchased it yet. Getting close to making that decision. I would prefer an all Black solution. Not real fond of the yellow anodized boosters. Hope this helps. If you find a better solution, let me know. Mike!!!

    Hey Mike, when you had to convert from the drums to this disc kit, did it end up making the total assembly longer? When you put the wheels/tires on will they still sit where you want for the stance?
    Ive got a 79. Same thing, bent the backing plate.. mine is a two axle. But wondering if I should ahould change out to a single axle now...
    That said back to the first question. 15X8 wheels, 32x11.5 tires.. was going with a 4"bs and -12 offset so that just the bulge of the sidewalls is showing out from under the oem flares. Would i still have a that stance with the conversion or does that mess up everything? Would I need to change the BS and offset of the wheels to get the stance that I want?

      With both the Drum and Disc setups, the Wheel Bearing is installed on the axle to the same depth. In both setups the bearing installs into the housing to the same depth, so the width between rear wheel flanges are the same. This should also be true if you used a two-piece axle in both scenarios. So "Total Assembly Longer".... No.
      So whether you go with 1-piece or 2-piece axles.... OR Drum/Disc.... Your overall width should not change, therefore no adjust needed for BS or Offest if you liked what you have.
      Great questions! Cheers Mike

      Hey Mike. Finally past the drive train component rebuilds and now installing the SSBC A130 two piece axle conversion kit amd had a question Boit the wheel studs. My step son helping with all this said he wants the version of studs with a longer shoulder so they fit better/more snug? Any idea what he's talking about? He said the regular oem studs with a Shorter shoulder would leave a little space around the stud?

    I have a 1985 CJ7 that I'm doing a swap to 5.3L LS and a AX15 transmission. I am planning to do the disc brake conversion with a one peace axle. Is it possible that the conversion kit you have was for the later model wide axle and that is way the brake lines was longer than needed for your narrow axle. I did like your solution. Where did you get the other set of installation instructions from? I have watched all
    of the #ProjectRoudy videos, some of them more than once, they are the best.
    Sorry for the confusion I was referring to the hydraulic brake lines. and yes the e brake cables are different, longer on the passenger side to reach over to the e brake equalizer on the driver side

      I purchased the 3 Emergency Brake Cables separately (Forward section, Driver's side and Passenger's side). I believe they are Crown. The problem that I outlined in the video was not an over all length issue. I am not sure if there are different cables for Wide Track versus Narrow Track applications, but if there are, the Cable Length versus the Cable Housing length I believe would be the same difference. I believe that in both situations, this issue would exist. Not sure I have explained that well. But I like the way you think!!! The A130-04/A130-05 instructions I found in a Google search. They were published on a Summit Racing page. If you can't find it, let me know and I can get it to you.

    Greate video! Question, I'm still debating on keeping the drum brakes or replacing them into that kit. Have you been able to try them and see how reliable they are? I've seen a lot of negative reviews about the installation and in fact I came to your video because you did a review on their web page.

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am still in the middle of my CJ7 Restoration, so I have not tried them yet. As I mentioned throughout the build prior to this video, I was intending to keep my Drum brakes as well, until I came across a deal on this kit. I have 31" tires on the Jeep now, but plan to move to 33" and this upgrade may be a noticeable upgrade. I would say that is really depends on your configuration and needs. As mentioned several times throughout this video. If you rely primarily on Instructions to get this installed, you will be disappointed. I tried to provide some work arounds (combining the info from multiple documents). I could see Brake Shops laughing at the instructions, then throwing them away and just install with general knowledge of Disc Brakes, they would get through it. There are other kits, might might provide better instructions if you need that. Otherwise, I hope that I provided enough to help you through it. Cheers! Mike

    Are the hard line to soft line mounting brackets going to be obstructed by the leaf springs once installed?

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! The current proportioning valve is for Disc/Drum combination and would not be suitable for the new setup. I am converting to a vacuum booster and will be changing the PValve as well.

      This is the Rear axle which does not technically have knuckles. Are you talking about the Rear Disc Conversion Kit. I purchased this one on ebay from a gentleman that ended up living 15 miles away. I saved on the purchase price and the drive to get it was free. The kit details are in the video.
