It's been around for a few years now, but the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is only just under threat from the BMW M3 Competition and the M5 for its segment-crowning Nurburgring lap time. The company did update its flagship sports sedan for the 2024 model year, but is it still the best option if you want a fast driver's car? The BMW M3 stopped being the benchmark _long_ ago.
    They [Bimmer's] are no longer a driver's car but rather a gamer's car. Drowning in a sea of digital wizardry. The same can be said about the majority of high-performance offerings on the market these days. Don't even get me started on the S650 Mustang...

    • @AdrianoCisternino
      @AdrianoCisternino 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      The steering reputation in the reviews came from the early cars. Then they had to modify the steering to resolve a vibration on full lock when maneuvering, as most people use these cars as daily. The early QVs were also lower, and difficult to deal as daily. Even the glass used for the windows was thinner and lighter! Eventually the car has been slightly migrated for creature comfort, versus pure performance and hard driving pleasure. I had a 2019 one and it was an amazing driving car. However, the reliability wasn’t a strong point. The vehicle would throw random misfire codes frequently and go into limp mode. It seemed to be related to the GDI system and intake valve carbon build up. I think the newer ones have port injection as well so hopefully they might be a little more reliable. I sold it but every day wish I hadn’t.

    The Giulia wins easily against the F80 BMW 😉 Even the new M3 wins very narrowly at the Nürburgring against the Giulia - a very, very poor performance by BMW against Alfa Romeo, Alfa Romeo clearly ahead. The F80 is completely destroyed by the Giulia at the Nürburgring. Yes, the Giulia is a premium luxury car that saws the M3 to pieces.

    From what I’ve heard for the QVs is the brake pads for the steels are crappy and the factory tires aren’t good for all weather; for at least 19-early 23 models.
    I can attest to the tires not being ideal, if it gets around 40℉ and dampy/drizzle you can lose traction easy. My Stelvio QV broke loose around a turn last week in those conditions, but torque vectoring and AWD caught itself within 1 second.

    Interesting the reviewer nit piks the steering. I think he's in the minority as most reviewers pick the steering as a high point. Could be he was never able to get enough heat in the tires. The Pirelli P Zero Corsas are excellent tires at 50 degrees and above. Below 50 degrees you just can't get enough heat in them. My '19 Giulia Nring is among the best steering cars I've driven including lots of BMW's. But it's a handful when it's cold out .

  • @colinhoward74
    @colinhoward74 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The reason the steering is so light has nothing to do with engineers not doing their job , it has everything to do with the semi autonomous crash safety , nowadays steering is electric to accomodate this 'mandatory' safety feature . All cars steering now feels light and vauge vs the hydraulic system we grew up with . That said , its a hell of a car . Any car built first by 10 top engineers in a skunk works style development is going to be real unlike the bean counter cars handed to engineers on prozac to make it better .

      @@mikelamberth9975 I wasn't commenting on Fiat; it's Alfa Romeo I was talking about. Nothing wrong with most Japanese cars if what you need is basic transportation, but the Italians put a lot of passion into everything they do, and I believe the current Giulia and Stelvio are good representatives of what they're about. That said, Alfa hasn't made a serious marketing effort in the US market - little/no advertising, few dealers and no attempt to convince potential buyers the current cars are as good as the competition (like a class-leading warranty). unfortunately for Stellantis/Alfa, sales success comes from more just making good cars - you need customer brand awareness, a convenient dealer body, an assurance of reliability and competitive pricing.
      Look at what Hyundai/Kia is doing. They must have the highest company advertising expenditure per unit sold of all the major brands and they change their vehicles design/features constantly. Their 100k powertrain warranty helped their cause (most customer mistakenly thought it was for the entire car). Alfa couldn't hope to sell in similar high volumes given their market target (enthusiasts) and pricing (higher than average), but they could be doing a lot better with an improved marketing mix.

    If you need AWD for track days and fast laps you should stay home RWD rules. And please I take an E30M3 over this Alfa and the current M3/M4 any day.

      Too bad princess you werent old enough or dint have a sugar daddy when they were new so you have one in the garage. A good rebuild of E30M3 2.5 S14 engine costs as much as a new M4 CS. You just have to buy a M2 or M2CS since its the closest you can get. Overweight and doesnt handle as well. Not as fun to drive. I own a M2CS and excercise it properely at drivers schools. I prefer one of my E30M3s.

      @@fredmertz3837 Hey, smarta$$, I was plenty old enough to remember the E30M3; in fact, I was able to drive a GM competitive evaluation car at the Proving Grounds. I thought it was really crude, as the engine was really buzzy as you went through the RPM band (obviously no balance shafts as a race motor). Funny how homologation cars aren't always the best for street usage. And I'd take my Alfa Giulia over any BMW product.

      E30M3 was built to race in the DTM. E30325i/is is far more streetable and the M20 engine is a better match for the street. I like old Alfas 1750Gtvs and 2000 GTVs and even mid 80's Alfas. Only issue is reliability. Alfas make MGs look like zToyota Corollas when it comes to reliability. Todays Alfas are badge engineered Fiats. How many track hours does your Alfa have? Myy M2CS has 31hrs with no issues. E30M3 is the last of the real Motorsports cars that was offered for sale and to be used on the public roads. What car was GM using to benchmark against a M3? ZR1s from the early 90's had lots of hp and tq but didnt hanlde as well and the brakes sucked. Camaros from the early 80's to ealy 90's for overweight garbage.

      @@fredmertz3837 I beg to differ on "badge engineered Fiats". Maybe you haven't followed Alfa since the '80s, but the current Giulia/Stelvio were done by a team who first did Ferraris (Marchione had big plans for Alfa). That meant a solid body structure, short/long arm front suspension (not like your BMW's MacPherson struts), lots of aluminum in the body (50/50 wt distribution) and very quick/precise steering (something today's BMWs don't have). OBTW, I liked the BMW E36/46 M3s, but I HATE the looks of the current M3/M4.
      No, I haven't had my Alfa on the track; my racing days were on a Ducati 750, with two amateur roadracing national championships to show for it.

    outgunned, out dragged, out torqued by the M3. Wait till you need spare parts. My late dad used to own 4 Alfas in the 70's to late 80's tile switched to Honda and Toyota. Never gone back to Alfa again. Motoring journalists don't buy the cars they test and only live with teh test cars for days ,may be weeks Read CAR AND DRIVER 40,000 mile test. They said a "nightmare"

    • @rlsedition

      First, not matter how fast the current M3/M4 are, they're also butt ugly and way too heavy for performance sedans. Second, what Alfa did in the '70s-80s has nothing to do with the current Giulia/Stelvio cars. And, finally, I'm not arguing with that CarandDriver QV experience, but that was one car; current Alfas are as reliable as any of their German competition.
