This young woman is breaking serious ground with respect to women playing jazz and getting the recognition they deserve! AMAZING playing. She has a great way of being "present" to the music, the groove, and she is great to watch. What a performer!!!
Yep. She's all that and a bag of chips. Been following Tal Wilkenfeld since she was 16 years old. Her original compositions are groundbreaking also 👍♥️♥️
+lanes58 I wouldn't say funk is beginner's bass. Playing ANY style in the pocket is an art. Just cause the music is simpler doesn't make it easier. A lot of the jazz greats would tell you that it's often harder to play a slow ballad than an up-tempo scorcher.
+Eric Mills I was just be sarcastic, to the dumb comment by topper. Most would agree, that being a good bass player, (or any instrument), means becoming a musician first. That means, you learn to play all styles of music, and learn them well. And Tal Walkenfeld is a fantastic musician. I've been playing bass for over 30 years, and although funk is fun to play, it is very repetitious. And if you have the chops, that pocket is easy to fall into.
No doubt they're all phenomenal, but I've actually seen a lot of Tal's other videos. She's such a crazy good bassist. Check out some of her stuff with Jeff Beck. She will blow your mind.
Ha! Was scrolling all through the comments seeing if ANYONE would recognize Greg. I think you're the only one. The dude is so underrated among the general public.
Imagine having the god Herbie the legend Vinnie and everyone here talks about how good tal is!! You have to be really good to be compared with these beasts!!!
The Man himself.! I have seen Herbie perform this a dozen different ways and this is definitely one of my own favorites.! From Miles to Herbie to Tal, the music passes on down.!
I think if I heard this correctly, when Ms Wilkenfeld auditioned for Jeff Beck, she did a solo bit on Stevie Wonder's "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" and Beck said, "That will be your show piece when we play live" and essentially she was hired. Godbless her and the artists she's worked with allowing her to flourish. And, hey, shout to The Who, whom she opened for on their 50th Anniversary Tour!
Young lady after watching you jam in several of the videos that you’re in I realize now that I ,an old man now was never anything but an amateur my ego just went out the window young lady You’re so cool
Tal Wilkenfeld (electric bass guitar) is such a pro at a young age, when Herbie is having a little trouble with a wire around his neck, she reaches up to help him out. Great bass, also!
Mr. Herbie Hanckok is always true to himself ... nothing less than… « adorable »... and… « what about Mrs. Tal Wilkenfeld, bassist ».... which for me ... is an amazing discovery that I love ... I felt so privileged to see Mr. Hanckok this summer in Montreal ... "WOW" ...
Oui Mr Hancock es un bienfaiteur pour la jeunesse, un authentique pianiste sortie de la terre 😇, pour le salut de l'humanité, un disciple de la bienveillance de la compassion et de la sagesse.
All of the excitement around the bass player is understandable but a bit misplaced... it's Herbie who make this video such a treat. His joy of making music is evident and infectious.
Featuring Tal Wilkenfeld on lead bass. I can see Herbie saying "You play lead on this one, girl! I'll fill in the spaces with my keyboard! We can make magic happen!"" They did. Just wonderful.
Amen... the 'experts' on the thread talking about how this isn't all that - have not stood on a stage with Colaiuta and tried to keep everything in the pocket.
I seen Herbie do this song with Jaco. New years eve in Vancouver late 70's. My jaw dropped. I have never seen a bass player do a 20 minute solo. Jaco was like Jimi on the bass:)))
Saw Jaco on Weather Report's 8:30 tour and he did a 20 minute solo. At one point he had the bass making noises on one side of the stage while he was on the other! It didn't get boring for a moment. Also saw Herbie at around that time. Got to say it was way more fun than this.
Children’s music! I love children’s music! How nice of this girl to let Herbie try to play such difficult material. And he kept up with it pretty well.
01:35 ... Tal can play like a bass-hero and in the same time "to work" as a stylist. :-) Beside her talent, she seems to be a really nice person. It's a joy to look at her when she plays because she shines like a beautiful diamond and she is forwarding this happiness to all other band members. She definitely lives for her music but she's a team player.
Oof Herbie Hancock was so pumped up about playing a keytar that he never asked himself "does every single tone on this thing make me sound like Pilot Wings 64?"
I'm a bass player seen and heard a lot of really good bassist but Tal baby is the most amazing totally awesome I've ever heard keep it up girly girl ❤👍👍👍👍
Been following tal since jeff beck (who i saw at the old shrine auditorium in los angeles in 1966 or 67) Tal is a major talent my only compaint is she is always under recorded...great video!
Still funky in 2023. Timeless art.
I have played this song on bass a hundred times. And then comes a woman that looks younger than my daughter and blows me away. I stand humbled.
joe tal, tal joe
Tal Wilkenfeld
yah she does it all the time
I could have said it too, before I heard Mohini Dey. Comparatively Tal looks like a beginner 😘
I see her with Jeff Beck and she's amazing
My girl's a CLASSIC on that axe! Worthy of being on stage with the great HH!!!
She's amazing.
This young woman is breaking serious ground with respect to women playing jazz and getting the recognition they deserve! AMAZING playing. She has a great way of being "present" to the music, the groove, and she is great to watch. What a performer!!!
Ja, der liegt's im Blut
Just amazing. Thats the new and hope full generation.
Yep. She's all that and a bag of chips. Been following Tal Wilkenfeld since she was 16 years old. Her original compositions are groundbreaking also 👍♥️♥️
Women have been playing jazz for decades.
Who is she?
I never tire of this video.
January 2024 and counting.
I love how Herbie listens to the other musicians and is constantly using whatever they come up with. You can see there's a lot going on in his brain.
Vinnie is killing it on the drums, Tal is killing the bass groove love it!!!
Yes! I can Lisening to the grow frome vinner & Tal 24/7. They play like the did it over 20years. It is so tight and playfull at the same time
Herbie Hancock and & Tal Wilkenfeld on one stage? WOW!! Incredible talent!
Tal Wilkenfeld is really something else, isn't she? Jamming with Beck, Herbie, Clapton, and who knows who else...Just amazing.
As I recall Steve Lukather,Chick Corea...
+tropper55593 Funk? That's beginner bass. She was playing that when she was 10 years old.
+lanes58 I wouldn't say funk is beginner's bass. Playing ANY style in the pocket is an art. Just cause the music is simpler doesn't make it easier. A lot of the jazz greats would tell you that it's often harder to play a slow ballad than an up-tempo scorcher.

+MrReed314 who is she? I did NOT expect to see such a young bass player when I looked up herbie hancock haha
You can bet everybody on that stage is a 10 on their instrument
You have to be a 10 just to audition. The people on that stage are 11's. 🙂
Agreed!!
That might be too low.
No doubt they're all phenomenal, but I've actually seen a lot of Tal's other videos. She's such a crazy good bassist. Check out some of her stuff with Jeff Beck. She will blow your mind.
......or MORE!!!
Herbie, Greg Phillinganes, Tal Wilkenfeld, AND Vinnie Colaiuta? Jeez, what a lineup.
Ha! Was scrolling all through the comments seeing if ANYONE would recognize Greg. I think you're the only one. The dude is so underrated among the general public.
Vinnie, one of the Best drummer
All musicians are killing it. The bass player and drummer are in sync for a great funk run
How she kindly goes out of her way to try and help him with his in ear monitor 💓🎼🎸🎹
Imagine having the god Herbie the legend Vinnie and everyone here talks about how good tal is!! You have to be really good to be compared with these beasts!!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE Tal Wilkenfeld ! Such joy playing shines thru all over
Vinnie is the only person who could make time THIS odd and THIS funky at once. Freakin alien.
Vinnie is a great musician, but there's nothin 'odd' about the time in this tune, just 4/4.
@@zanohoriamazo1 I agree, but I meant "odd sounding", not "odd time signature".
2:52 Tal is playing a little lick and Herbie is using it again...
Yeah!
bozzaa ewwwww
It is always the ugly and grossest of losers that make comments like this! They are creepy!
She's dope!
Yup, connected in the groove
Love watching Tal play bass, her energy and smile are contagious!!
Her groove level on the bass is insanely high, she's natural bassist
She is amazing on the bass - sounds fantastic
Peter Lund Kristensen And so smooth! Complex, varied, & busy...but sooo smooth weaving everything in.
Lol no
The Man himself.! I have seen Herbie perform this a dozen different ways and this is definitely one of my own favorites.! From Miles to Herbie to Tal, the music passes on down.!
And to top it all this girl woman is completely unassuming? No crap only pure groove and and then some. Wow!!
She adjusts his strap while Jamming! She is a national treasure!
It was his in ear...🤓
His in-ear-monitor cord got caught up in the strap so she tried to fix it ... while playing. Amazing.
Who IS she??
We need a time-stamp...
Edit: nvm I got it 1:33
God, HERBIE!!!!! Tal, you slay me. This is pure art at it’s finest.
That bass girl is killer 💪🏻
Tal Wilkenfeld
Plays well too.
See Tal and Vinnie with Jeff Beck Live at Ronnie Scotts.
Yes!
Yeah, I said that too. An awesome display of class musicianship from everyone!
And awesome areolas too!
Always has to be some child making comments. Today it is @@thatcorrell3061

Can you imagine being the keyboardist for Herbie Hancock? I love confident musical mastery.
Yes, I can!! Jonnie Keys Johnson... believe and be competent

My man...🙂
wish Tal had a bit more volume
Mike Jones it was all balanced. just use a headphone
A different conditioner, perhaps..

@@gurubhai01 I see what you did there 😀 Brilliant.
@@gurubhai01 no makeup
She has it, she moves it and make it feel even better. That's great that young musicians are taking it seriously
Génial ! Tal est fantastique ! Chameleon , le classique des bassistes. Ici c'est grandiose !
Always a pleasure to see Tal perform! She plays with so much soul
Herbie Hancock live. Always on the bucket list.
In ear problems? Don't worry, Tal is here. Fantastic bass player!!!
Turn her up for christ's sake!
Herbie et Tal en parfaite symbiose...du grand art ! merci à tous
Nice, there's nothing better than a stage full of musicians all playing happily in sync. Great cameraman & editing production work too.
"WOW" ...
I love her bass playing and her hair
Herbie was the jazz funk king of the early 70's !
What a line up
Tal is amazing! So gifted!
Dude Tal is the embodiment of Bass playing.. she's just groovin'
The absolutely beautiful and Uber talented Tal Wilkenfeld. This is so open and free.
You see this guy? Go see him in concert. He's touring in 2024.
Oui Mr Hancock es un bienfaiteur pour la jeunesse, un authentique pianiste sortie de la terre 😇, pour le salut de l'humanité, un disciple de la bienveillance de la compassion et de la sagesse.
OMG TAL WILKENFELD!!!!! SHES SOOO AMAZING!!!!
You also can hear her singing "Under The Sun" . Just amazing!
All of the excitement around the bass player is understandable but a bit misplaced... it's Herbie who make this video such a treat. His joy of making music is evident and infectious.
Tal Wilkenfeld... what else to say? Solid groove, great little fills & ideas, always supportive, but with her own voice. Awesome bass playing!
Featuring Tal Wilkenfeld on lead bass. I can see Herbie saying "You play lead on this one, girl! I'll fill in the spaces with my keyboard! We can make magic happen!"" They did. Just wonderful.
Vinnie throws the beat around so much, I have no idea how Tal and the rest of the band hold it together. Monsters
Amen... the 'experts' on the thread talking about how this isn't all that - have not stood on a stage with Colaiuta and tried to keep everything in the pocket.
Herbie Excellent comme d'habitude! Chapeau l'artiste 🎹🎹🎹✌👏
Magnifique!
Herbie played with Miles Davis, Tal played with Herbie. Passing baton to next generation.
true
Tal is so fun to watch and talent for days. Her being totally gorgeous does not hurt either.
I seen Herbie do this song with Jaco. New years eve in Vancouver late 70's. My jaw dropped. I have never seen a bass player do a 20 minute solo. Jaco was like Jimi on the bass:)))

TAL IS JUST AMAZING BASS PLAYER. WONDERFULL 100 %
Children’s music! I love children’s music! How nice of this girl to let Herbie try to play such difficult material. And he kept up with it pretty well.
Herbie , Hancock over the world!!!
That bass riff though!
SHE plays with, with the Master, and shows OFF her, mastery!
01:35 ... Tal can play like a bass-hero and in the same time "to work" as a stylist. :-)

She’s looking for his in-ear set ;) was a technical difficulty thing

The is fresh vigorous refreshing go Tal like breath of fresh air ...love it ...
what a heavy band! that's tons of class.
Seen many vids with Tal and Me thinks this is the first vid where I felt that she was in COMPLETE SYNC! Nice stuff!
NOW, YOU GOTTA BE GOOD to be young and on stage, playing with one of the all time masters. She may be young, but her soul is old. 😄😄😄😄
Wow amazing bass playing. Old Herbie is kicking butt too
🎵Can''t get enough....of that Funky stuff! 🎶🎹
Oof Herbie Hancock was so pumped up about playing a keytar that he never asked himself "does every single tone on this thing make me sound like Pilot Wings 64?"
Hate to say it but his tone reminded me of the dreaded stylophone promoted by the even more dreaded Rolf Harris.
Oh YEAH! Bring on dat jazz funk. You Herbie, and you Tal.
I thought most people look stupid with a key tar. But when herbie held it he looked like a genius. Anyway love tal and the key tar solo
Herbie Hancock is one the idols of AR rehman .rehman adores him. Such a legend
Nice Bass Tal... She also nails '' Chelsea Hotel''
I'm a bass player seen and heard a lot of really good bassist but Tal baby is the most amazing totally awesome I've ever heard keep it up girly girl ❤👍👍👍👍

Is that Greg Philligaines on the second keyboards?
Yes.. Legend...
I would be exactly like that base player. Getting to play with Herbie Hancock would be a blast!
Jeff Beck, Tal and Vinnie at Crossroads Blues festival is also pretty dynamite.
Another great Herbie Hancock ensemble!!! Great Cooking!!!
Not only is she a fabulous bassist, she is easy on the eyes. Cute lady!

after seeing him live earlier tonite at massy hall Toronto performing it once again
Tal is great, Herbie a legend, but this performance seems soft
I agree with you... No sound, this chamelon doesnt groove very much...
drummer fault
I agree
All great musicians but no groove, like no one hear each other. They sound like amateurs. Why???
Agree too ...
The Gifted. Demonstrating their gifts. We get to enjoy these funkified masters' performance.
