Tal is a supremely talented artist. Her playing is unassuming but very complex. She deserves her place as one of the best jazz bassists in a generation. Always impressive, always humble.

Yep she's a beast. She only hits the right note at the right time, never too much, never too little. That's quite the musical maturity for anyone, let alone someone her age. Her and her bass are one.

You haters leave that girl alone! When I was a young musician (Tal's age), I had an innate feel and instinct for music-- particularly jazz. I had the love and passion for the music...but I lacked the discipline when it came to practicing. 30-35 years later, when I reflect on my early experiences as a fledgling musician, I realize I simply DIDN'T practice, nor put in the 'real work'! Recently, I decided I wanted to start playing again-- this time, just for recreation. Doing so, for me, it meant FINALLY admitting-- to myself-- that I had loved the idea of BEING a competent musician, but truthfully -- save the first 4-5 years learning my instrument, had not put forth the effort to have earned that right. I readily admit had I seen this performance 30-35 years ago, I'd have been EXCEPTIONALLY jealous (not hateful, but jealous) of a musician the same as I (certainly younger) that played better than I could. Nope! 75% of the problem was MY azz not 'puttin' in the REAL work and practice! Sure, the 'natural talent factor' can always be considered when it comes to the case of an obviously 'gifted' musician such as Tal, but even 'gifted' artists MUST 'put in the work'. This young lady has obviously put in the effort to be able to display this level of talent and musicianship. Bravo for her. I can imagine she was in Heaven jammin' with Herbie and those other older cats. Thanks for the post.

Herbie Hancock - Actual Proof live at Montreux
Posted on September 22, 2018 by admin
Herbie Hancock plays “Actual Proof” from the 1974 “Thrust” album, live at the 44th Montreux Jazz Festival in 2010.
Great band with Tal Wilkenfeld on bass, Gregg Phillinganes on keys, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Lionel Loueke on guitar and of course the great Herbie Hancock on keys.

It is a bit unfair to compare a great upcoming bass-player with Jaco. Tal Wilkenfeld is a real big talent and she stands for her own. And she really serves the music and does not show her ego. As much as I like Jaco for going beyond the limits with an e-bass, I like Tal Wilkenfeld for being able to make a musical statement along with the greatest musicians. In ten years we will talk about bass players playing like Tal Wilkenfeld.

*Just a little bit of info on the Bass Player Tal Wilkenfeld. She is from Australia and moved to the United States when she was 16 to pursue her career as a Guitarist! She took up playing Bass and Voila....Playing with some of the best Musicians in the world!

This is interesting because she seems to have a east coast accent, but I can hear the aussie in her voice..also lovely and I look forward to getting her new album! She has a video of her band at a cabin in NYC with 3 songs from her new album. I first saw her with Jeff Beck on the Clapton guitar festival and I thought she was 14 or so I was blown away by her talent and now I have heard her sing.

    • @rickolsonmusic

I wrote charts for Herbie of 11 tunes in 1989 including this tune. Looks like Herbie’s not looking at it 21 years later - a close up screen shot looks different. I didn’t ask him about Actual Proof but the concerts sounded great that year.
He had Wah Wah Watson (my connection to him), Darryl Jones, Ndugu, Mino, & Bill Evans- sax if i remember correctly. I did get to sit with him as he looked over a chart of Hang Up Your Hang Ups I was writing- by hand- pre computer. Herbie said to me “Did Wah Wah say it’s right?” I lied and said yes. Wah Wah had actually told me “Herbie asked if you can make it neater!” So I used a ruler and some lettering stencils & they looked good.
On Actual Proof remember it taking awhile to figure out. While I didn’t ask him about this I believe the title itself is from Buddhism.
