  • The theme track of ‘Bombay’ (1995) introduced Rahman to the world.
But it was ‘Bombay Dreams’ (2002) that truly launched the international career of A.R. Rahman.
A unique milieu that opened up his mind and influenced his creative ethos like nothing else before. For the Bollywood themed Musical theatre, he recreated some of his iconic songs from Indian films, and also composed new tracks.
But it wasn’t all a smooth sailing.
There were cultural differences between Andrew Lloyd Webber (Producer) and Rahman.
The bridge between them was Shekhar Kapur (Executive Producer).
    That was 20 years ago.
Bombay Dreams changed Rahman & his music forever. How?
Andrew Lloyd Webber, A.R. Rahman and Shekhar Kapur relive their experiences on this exclusive episode of Rahman Music Sheets.
Rahman Music Sheets - A series to track three decades of an incredible musical journey of Oscars and Grammys winner A.R. Rahman

Due to historical reasons we never forget "Koh-i-Noor" who took it , how and where it is landed. at "Tower of London"
But As an Indian I feel proud that a 105.6 carats is easily replaced with AR Rahman for his music and at the same time I should add SACHIN RAMESH TENDULKAR for his cricket against people where it was born.
Both gems are out performed in their ways and they are 1000 carats better and glitter more than koh-i-noor .
It was indeed a proud moment that Andrew L Webber worked with AR Rahman and I guess Sekhar kapoor new that ARR going to be an international star one day.
Thanks to 02india. Bringing those memories back to 2022. Time lapsed but ARR music is still fresh as it is out of oven, a moment ago.

Delightful episode, made memorable by Andrew Lloyd Webber / Shekhar Kapoor and AR Rahman's inputs. I loved the practice sessions footage of Bombay Dreams, never had the opportunity to see this footage, let alone the actual show. I hope it can be recreated in India in a fresh look.

Yes. Mr. Vaidya. Mr. Andrew Llyod Webber and his team were gracious enough to permit us to use clips of the play. Mr. Rahman and Shekhar Kapur have now created WHY... being performed at Dubai Expo... But you are right... they can go back to Bombay Dreams... it's 20 years now when it got premiered in 2002. @@O2india Hey Umesh Sir, you are not getting the reach you deserve. I guess, the people who are interviewed can share about this TH-cam channel on their social media. For example Rahman Sir himself could share a short video on his TH-cam channel and other social media platforms. So can Ashutosh, Sekhar Kapoor and others.
I feel sad when I see you asking people to share the videos and subscribe. I don’t mean you shouldn’t. We do it anyway but I just feel bad that THIS, as one of the best quality channels is having to request people. No. Organic growth won’t get you much reach I feel. Something needs to be done to increase the reach. This channel is pure quality. You shouldn’t be made by us audience to request for reach. This is where we as audience fail you 🤦🏾‍♂️.

    Superb episode @O2India
I watched Bombay Dreams (twice!) in London, still remember the ground-reverberating big dholaks, in the aisles, for ‘Ganesh’ .. and the brilliant Indian -classical ‘Only Love’ which Priya Kalidas and Raza Jaffrey aced consistently. I absolutely loved the amazing Dalip Tahil sing ‘Don’t release me’. It’s hard to choose as crowning glories between’Journey Home’ and ‘Wedding qawwali’ but sona sona pips the post, powerful joyous yet spiritual celebration of marriage…
It’s Broadway’s big myopic loss but no dent to our pride, our ARR

I still treasure the amazing experience which I had at Victoria Theatre in London ..being a student in UK, you get a lot of perks and using that I managed to find the best seat in the theatre!! There were live dholak players on balconies in the auditorium and that enhanced the music even further!! The lovely late Sophia Haque was playing Ayesha Dharker’s part when I saw the show and she was really amazing, full of energy … it truly was one of a kind of experience!!

Rahman is, ofcrs, deeply romantic perhaps as the episode also puts it that way. But what I always wished was had Rahman been not so shy or introverted with a sort of reserved demeanour, given his incredibly gifted musical and creative/technical talents he could have easily stood amongst the all time great popstars in the world like MJ or Jlo, someone like that. Because in terms of music, he’s already one of the world’s most gifted composers but deva re deva, if only a Prabhu Deva like dancer was also there in him along with his musical Muqabula journey, then he could have been India’s direct answer to MJ in terms of being a rock star even visually.

I know you will tell us not to be constrained by regions. But kindly bring on board people like KOTI from Andhra Pradesh. ARR worked under him for 7 years. He can surely throw light on his budding years and ARR himself can open up how it helped him. You can bring in Shankar, Tamil director whose association has produced many super hits. I think you are predominantly going for Hindi than South. His home is Chennai forever. You can interview singers like Saasha, Shreya Ghoshal, Naresh Iyer, Chinmayi and many others but that can be for later episodes.
But kindly bring more southern technicians too. Southern states can also give you more reach. Plz don’t say we are thinking in compartments 😅. I see 90% of your stuff is North Indian barring ManiRatnam Sir. Sorry for being brutally honest
