The fact she rarely blinks makes this seem like a horror musical. And she's the villain.
😂👍
I mean, the book was intended to be horror.
@@PyroGothNerdno it’s not. I will actually fight you on that!
@@winterbloomingroses7146 Dude, it was literally a ghost story.l where the Phantom isn't revealed to not be a ghost until halfway through, and he goes on murder rampage at one point.
A lot of things that were considered horror back then are considered mild, now
Well there was one blink, not in a close up though...
This feels like something from an alternate universe where instead of a musical phantom was just a bizarre and memorable video that was a surprise hit on MTV and a song that stayed at the top of the charts for like a summer.

@@garlottos Yeah. They cut those last two lines out to make way for a slight instrumental break. Part of me wishes that they hadn't. (6/27/2022)
everyone talks about ‘helpless to resist’ but nobody mentions ‘close your eyes and let music set you free’ 😤
@@brxzbze I think the change to “soar” is smart actually because it ties into Christine’s “soar” on the rooftop with Raoul.
Love how this phantom shakes his fist like the old guy screaming at kids to get off his lawn.
Also fitting into that pattern: the way he shakes makes me worry that he's having a seizure.
Okay, so I have to remember that it's always easy to poke fun at something and much harder to create something. I do notice that this video shows off the difference between a singer and a classically trained singer: compared with Sarah Brightman, Steve Harley's voice pales.
Im always used to Christine starting with “In sleep he sang to me”
So everytime i come back here and she starts with “Benea-“

The comments are talking about it being cringe, but honestly, I love this unironically. Great visual storytelling, the Phantom seems genuinely unhinged and feral, the ending is beautifully realized.
Some of the visuals are really good, yes, especially the first 30 seconds or so. After that it gets a bit weird - maybe I'm not making enough allowance for it being a music video, but goodness, 1:18 looks like someone's having a seizure (sorry). And yep, Raoul's hair and stunned-puppy expression crack me up.
I actually like the lyrics! Maybe because it's fun listening to lyrics which I haven't known by heart for years, but either way, I enjoy it.
big "labyrinth" 80s camp vibes
@@Julia-lk8jn I know I'm like a year late, but it's literally because it's a music video. Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford are classically trained actors. Every action is dramatic, expressive, and leaves no room for interpretation of their emotions so everyone from the nosebleeds to the front row can see and understand perfectly. It's a skill, and I love the way it looks up close, but I suppose it's entirely subjective.
I am honestly surprised how many people think it's cringe. Growing up in theatre programs, directing musicals, and acting in them, all I see are really good actors who are deep in their roles. I think it's wonderful.
While criminally unknown to most, an amazing singer, and a tragic loss. RIP Steve Harley, 2024.

That heavy distorted guitar at the start and that bass line changed my life forever.
You should check out Pink Floyds echos that’s what it was stolen from.
@@Dirt_Reynolds17 There's a Procol Harum song called Conquistador from 1967 that uses a similar descending riff as it gets to the chorus. I always thought Pink Floyd took it from that since the two bands toured together.
So if this is like a prototype version before the story was fully realised, perhaps Christine was supposed to be scary, her mind is controlled, and like the two of them are conspiring in secret to kill people. Could have been a vastly different show :)

Yep, that describes it pretty well. I was more concerned with 1:18 looking like a seizure ... well, the man has been living in a cold damp cellar for at least a decade.
But seriously, it very much illustrates the difference between a singer and a classically trained singer.
I burst out laughing when the phantom decided dropping the chandelier was the best way to attempt murder, especially the fake blood screen wipe. Where are there snakes, why is she Cleopatra, why does she not blink properly, wtf is everyone's hair, why the wedding dress, what is up with the ancient greek theatre mask, who are those twins WHY ARE THERE GRAVES IN THE LAKE
Are we sure Christine is not supposed to be the stalker here? I mean that phantom looks and sounds like he's being forced into doing a duet. She doesn't blink just so he doesn't get away.
That would be a pretty nice remake. I want to see Christine as a yandere who forces phantom into loving her

"Camp?" How on earth do you figure that? Erik and Raoul obviously are gone on Christine.
@@MaskedMan66 do you....know what camp means? sincerely asking here
@@MrFireflies100 Yes, I... do. Maybe you'd be kind enough to explain why it's "Imitate William Shatner" Night. Meanwhile, I'll possibly teach you something.
The term "camp" comes from the camp followers, who were young men who followed the army of the Roman Empire to perform entertainments and sexual favors for the soldiers. Thus, camp in showbiz means something made to expressly appeal to homosexuals.
It's arguably the most misused word in the English language, since people think it means "kitschy" or something that is meant to seem cheap or not very well-made. Adam West went on at some length in his autobiography about how he despised the word "campy" in relation to the _Batman_ T.V. series.
They know what "camp" means in the U.K., e.g. the _Round the Horne_ characters Julian and Sandy, _Are You Being Served's_ Wilberforce Clayborne Humphries, and the sitcom _Vicious._
RIP Steve Harley 😢

The change in the lyrics are so great. Makes it an alternate version from the original. Brightman is the one and only Christine Daaé forever. A goddess!
So it’s goofy as fuck, yeah, with Christine sounding like a 1980’s Sloane Ranger, and the Phantom not so much singing as rhythmically gasping, but there’s also some really cool things. Like, for example, now we know what the Phantom’s full mask would have looked like when it still was that. And Christine’s singing higher and higher as part of an actual opera performance, only to have the last high note stand in for a scream is honestly really cool and gives a lot of context to why it’s written that way.
1:06 Apparently they directed Harley to sing as if he's on the verge of a massive stroke. Either that, or someone is inside him controlling him with levers. Nothing else on the planet can explain that performance.

The Rocky Horror Opera Show
I love this. It's abasically "The Phantom of the Room." THe weird cuts, the re-used footage, "look! A snake!" This video has it all.
Another fab musical icon gone before his time. RIP Steve Harley!
For some strange reason, I really like how he says "You give your love to me, for love is blind". It's incredibly dull as lyrics, but damn, it's pretty well delivered.
I know what you mean. I practically melt when he says it.
probably the background instruments that kick in @1:25 (w/e they are) greatly contribute to that effect
@BlackFalkon Exactly, the note hits your ear a certain way.
For me , the line "you'll give your love to me, for love is blind" is the perfect encapsulating statement for what I love abt the "love" part of the show bc they're both so wrong? And it's not like they find actual love and the end, but they kinda realize that they both fucked up at the end and love isn't the picturesque thing they wanted in this form, and while Christine still gets her cliche happy ending w Ralph, she's also realized she has to let her father go. It's just so wrong abt thus idea of romance and I do kinda love that. And just... so good. Thr phantom has perpetual incel vibes, and the mullet is a crime, and Christine needs to learn to overcome her daddy issues, but that's the point of it, isn't it? They're all wrong abt love, because they're all trying to compensate for or get back a love they don't have.
@ my comment: Raoul, not Ralph. How did that even happen.
Do you ever see something made in the 80s and you’re like that’s just a little too 80s

She was made for this role
@@janesgems7 actually the role was made for her, she was married to Andrew Lloyd Webber and he wrote the this part for her.

Basically everything involving the phantom is rough. The poor guy looks ridiculous. That being said, this is the best thing I’ve ever seen or heard and I love every second, from the decidedly un-sexy voice to the butter knife.

There's just something so beautiful about the way she sings, "And when my song begins...". I don't know what it is.
