  • As teasered before, it was now my job to refurbish my friend's Model T Generator.
    Luckily, it didn't need any coil rewinding while still making for an interesting repair.
    And as a reward, I even got a go at driving the Model T Ford myself!
    Enjoy!

    Standing in front of a Model T during a cold start is a brave thing to do!

    Watching this video reminded me why I drive old vehicles. Almost everything can be rebuilt. Unfortunately we live in a throwaway society now and it’s getting harder and harder to find parts to rebuild the old junk I drive lol.

    I drive my 1926 Model T everywhere. To me it's easier than a modern car with all it's awkward computerised controls and no sense of being connected to the environment around you. As for brakes, the 26-27 Model T is in a different world to the earlier T's with proper brakes on the rear wheels. BTW, 10A charge rate isn't good for battery life; about 4-5A is all you need and won't boil the battery.

    You are just a treasure, thank you so much for producing this content! Your music as always is heaven sent.
    All hail the planetary gear set - where would automatic transmissions be without them!
    When I was a kid, post World War II in the states, I still saw Model A Fords on the street as daily drivers - not many but some. Virtually no Model T’s as daily drivers but they were around - even then there was a fondness for them - every parade had at least one - they still do, which is amazing to me as now they are 100 years old (more or less)
    Best of luck, keep up the good work!

    Edsel had to work really hard to convince Henry that 19 years of the model T were more than enough. Chevrolet was nipping at Ford's heels by that time. Thanks for your time and effort in producing yet another enjoyable video. Greetings from the piedmont of Georgia, USA.

    Observations
    1. I love that many of your tools look period correct for working on these vintage autos.
    2. That better be old footage of your Model A, because if it's back on the road already and you haven't published a video we'll be upset!
    3. This generator rebuild seemed to go a bit faster than the one for the Model A. 😉
    4. Always impressed by your ability to diagnose, repair and test your different projects. A skill that has become lost in the age of remove, discard and replace.

    Most first time T drivers don’t learn the controls as quickly as you did! Sounds like the T is running on 3 cylinders… might want to check the coils, plug wires and/or spark plugs. Great video as always!

      Well, I did alright in the parking lot, but I wouldn't want to get into a panic situation with it. I'd probably either do nothing cos my brain would freeze or try to jam it in 1st and reverse at the same time (as with braking and depressing the clutch in any other car) xD

    Good video, good music. Was thinking (unusual for me) On your A engine. You were a bit confused with all the options, can't blame you. You know Paul Shinn, contact him, I'm sure he'll steer you straight. Knows his stuff and is practical, (sort of) HEE HEE!

    I guess you can see why the Model A was such a jump in driving experience for people in 1928. The Model T go controls basically stayed the same from 1908 to 1926.
    15:09 Aha! Sounds like SOMEONE'S been watching Red Green! Just remember that duct tape is not always the answer!
    This was very enjoyable. I know it's frustrating with your Model A being hors de combat, but it's good to see you putting your considerable skills to work helping others with FORD syndrome (Found On Road Dead or Fix Or Repair Daily)!😁

    You managed the T very well. I don’t rate them as ‘difficult’ just ‘different’ to drive. I, along with many others, will be driving our Model T’s to the National rally in Dubbo, NSW in late September. It’s a 260 kilometre drive from my place. Many will cover longer distances to get there. Another fantastic and informative video.

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. There are a few operations that can be done far quicker with the Model T than an unsynched three speed. Reverse parking, three point turns, rocking yourself out of a ditch... Each system has its own advantages.
      Godspeed!

    Lovely old car. In reality yes in today's traffic a T is kind of obsolete. With that said the T is over 100 years old at this point and with proper care it should last another 100 years.

    Though there is a lot of nostalgia for a model T, it is really not suitable for anything but parades, and doesn't have anything like the standard that came out of the later part of the T's run. Whereas a Model A is just an early obsolete version of a car. It's old, but it operates like a car.

    👍👌👏 Very well done again and as always (video and work). Please kindly allow me to ask a question:
    Does this Model T run on all 4 cylinders respectively are all 4 cylinders healthy? I thought to hear quite a dissonance. I once was a fan of Model T cars. But because of the weird pedal stuff I'm way less excited.
    Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
    Best regards luck and health to all involved people.

      Yes it has quite a substantial miss. The owner says compression is OK, so it might be ignition related.

    I don't think the A generator will last very long at 35A, about 12A continuous is all they're good for unless you add some cooling holes.

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was guess-timating ~25A for lights plus 10 Amps charging rate at night - actually doing the math, standard driving light will be more around 17A. Adding 10A charge, I'd say 25A continuously should be OK.

  • @stephenheatherly6254
    @stephenheatherly6254 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Unless you drive a lot with the lights on or only make short trips you may want to turn down the charge rate. Running that high has a tendency to greatly shorten the life of the battery due to overcharging

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's mostly a "get-icecream-car", so by the time you're home, it's just about charged enough to have the battery full again

    • @AstraWerke

      Klar, aber wenn man den halben Wagen zerlegen muss, um an die Lima zu kommen, spricht das nicht unbedingt für die Designabteilung ;)
