Counter and Numberwheels: 1927-1929 Model A Speedo

  • There is two general types of Speedometer for the Model A - the oval and the round bezel is the most obvious difference from the outside.
    On the inside, they are entirely different, too - so since this thing landed on my bench, I decided to do a teardown and repair video on this one, too.
    Link to the instructions I used: www.modelahouse...
    Enjoy!

    Great to see these old parts being repaired and not just tossed and replaced with a reproduction. Thanks as always for the great content

    Excellent work! Really enjoying the journey and your sense of humor. when you were getting the speedo back to the correct mileage and hoping that you didn't go over and need to drive in reverse like Ferris Bueller's Day Off. That would have been tragic.

      Good luck on your endeavour - on a 31, the speedo will be different, though - albeit much easier to work on. I've made a video about the 30/31 speedos, too.

    Dear Astra Werke guy.
    👍👌👏 Simply fantastic! Very well done again (video and work). Your choice of music was great too (as always). What a big difference between the two different models of speedometers. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
    Best regards luck and health.

    On a pedantic note, the oval speedo was in use from '27 through spring of 1930. I have one on my '30 phaeton.

    An old speedometer is definitely easier to repair than one with a microcontroller and all those small ants inside.
    Good job with the numbers.

    Wow! a metric speedo? Cool! I wondered about that. You're only going to get a 1927-1930 Model A up to 120 MILES per hour downhill in a hurricane!
    It's really interesting how Ford's "evolution" policy of gradual improvements happened for almost every part of the car from the speedo to the generator, always in the direction of simplicity.
    As always, your patience amazes me. Working on an almost 100 year old casting is not for the faint of heart!

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yup, they were sold for the european Fords - most were built in Denmark and Germany, and I bet the russian GAZ-A's would have a kilometre speedo, too.
      The ongoing improvements were also part of the reason I chose to get a 1930 "A" for myself - the saying "Never buy a car that just entered the market" was and will always be true :D

    re: cleaning the speedo of old lubricant and debris and losing the lettering.
    Solvents do not simply run from weak-to-strong.
    Sometimes you need the right solvent, not a more powerful one.
    For example, when removing price labels (from second hand books) or brand labels (from wine bottles for re-use), I normally find that alcohol (Methylated spirits in the UK, "denat alcohol in the USA") doesn't do any good, but white spirit ("paint thinner", or "mineral spirits") cuts through very quickly.
    There "might" be a solvent that will clean up nicely WITHOUT dissolving the letters.

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel that maybe sewing machine oil might do the trick. Anything remotely "aggressive" is probably too much for the old decals. Even sweaty hands are sometimes enough to dissolve them.

    • @AstraWerke

      Good question - I fiddled around with it for probably around two weeks on and off, but if you took out all the screw-ups (especially the multiple re-ordering of them decals) and had the spare parts ready, it could easily done on a single day.
