The connection between cannabis, psychosis and schizophrenia has long been suspected and is being debated now more than ever, as many states move towards legalizing marijuana.
With these changes, it’s time for us to review the evidence of the links between marijuana use and what it can do to our mental health, particularly in young users with developing brains.
Cannabis can cause psychosis. Cannabis-induced psychosis is caused by THC. This talk will explain what what happens in psychosis. It will also list the evidence of cannabis-induced psychosis and explain the biochemistry of cannabis-induced psychosis.
Psychosis is a symptom. Psychosis can occur in many different conditions. Schizophrenia is one of the conditions that can have psychosis as a symptom.
Many studies show that schizophrenia is significantly more likely to develop among people who use marijuana repeatedly. Whether cannabis can cause schizophrenia (or whether, for example, people who will eventually develop schizophrenia are more likely to use cannabis) can't be proven in a clinical study (because that kind of clinical study would be unethical).
But a number of findings should raise concerns:
    - it's biochemically possible for cannabis do cause the biochemical changes seen in schizophrenia
    - it's possible to create schizophrenia-like neurophysiological and behavioral changes in animals given THC or cannabis extracts
    - higher cannabis use in human populations is associated with higher risks of schizophrenia
    - if someone develops psychosis from their use of cannabis, their odds of later developing schizophrenia jump to about 1 in 3.
This talk ends with some interesting questions from the audience, such as what information should be given about the risks of cannabis at the point of sale, and what is the link between cannabis use and suicide.
Make sure to share this video with your friends and family to spread awareness of the risks of maraijuana usage, so that everyone can make an informed decision about whether or not marijuana is right for them.

YOU'VE experienced a nightmare because you had a bad trip, it becomes very easy for the mind to disturb itself when under bad external influences. you have to be in a good head space and a good environmental space in order to keep yourself under control, cannabis induced "psychosis" is a slippery slope because its symptoms are similar to a panic attack and if you've ever had a panic attack then you know that when your already in a panicked state its easy to belief anything and even more easier under the influence however it doesn't mean anything is actually happening. Its important to understand that while yes weed is a psychoactive drug it doesn't mean the drug itself is the cause of a "psychotic" episode and the reason I put that word in quotations is because it is temporary and rarely ever has any long term effects so when the weed consumption stops so does the paranoia. Weed isn't for everyone and that's alright, but don't think that what you've experienced applies to everyone else. If you cant handle it, don't take it.

I used to work with a middle-aged man who spent 18 years of his life in a mental hospital, the first two years in the forensic unit, all due entirely to pot.

I have a brother and nephew who were both destroyed by chronic use of pot. My brother’s psychotic and on drugs to control his mind and my nephew is a homeless schizophrenic on the streets. My brother also developed ataxia and can barely walk. It hurts so much to see him knowing how intelligent, successful and strong he used to be. And I never see my nephew. The worst thing is that my brother still won’t accept that the marijuana did all this. I only hope that someone reading this will take the warning that using marijuana is playing Russian roulette and stop.

I was smoking cannabis ( NO other drugs ever ) since 2015 - 2022 July ~ 8 Years I am currently 26 years old. I had my first psychosis episode on 20th. July 2022 .... I started having smell hallucinations followed by visual hallucinations. I saw blood all over the floor and then went to my neighbours house and i dont remember what i Spoke... I saw my own body and im standing somewhere else then my family took me to hospital because for two days i didnt drink , eat... when i was taken to hospital on July 22 i have little collection of what happened but i was having auditory hallucinations. I was feeling im my deceased grandmother when they were taking me to the hospital then i thought im a crow then cow... it was SCARRYYYY !!! My memory finally came back around July 28th,2022... what happened for a week I do not remember... I was given Haloperidol initially some injections then later i was kept on Risperidone from August 22' - November... Now currently I have been given Zolpidiem ( for sleep ) and Escitalopram ( anti- depressent ) ... Still not sure if cannabis caused it or my depression. I had family induced sexual trauma at the age of 18 ( 2014 ) where the addiction begin which developed fear of being watched as well and uncomfortable in my own body..
Cannabis + Depression + fear = LETHAL combination.

I hope you feel better. During my CIP episode, I had tactile and visual hallucinations. I saw insects every time I closed my eyes and it later developed into me feeling them. However I was on seroquel and a SNRI at the time of the episode so I do not currently know if they are somewhat responsible for the development of the condition that I conquered. I beat CIP after abstinence from cannabis. I have gone back to recreational weed for almost a whole year. however I limit my exposure to it. and I do not take any other pills that have an effect on dopamine reuptake. And I have yet to experience another break from reality.
It could also be important to note in my individual case, it was my first time ever smoking weed. And I didn’t smoke it but I vaped a concentration of it. A 90% plug and play cart. It was stupid and foolish of me to go from completely sober, never trying any “drug” in my life, to downing 90% concentration of THC daily for a month straight.
I am also concerned at studies that claim that people who have developed CIP before have a 50% chance according to a Danish study that followed 6,700 people, of later developing schizophrenia. And I know that further exposure to cannabis like I’ve been doing only increase my chances.
This video is also further alarming to me as it shows that 75% of people carry and increased risk of psychosis when exposed to cannabis.
You’ll be in my prayers and I truly hope that you and me never have to experience the hell of another psychosis break. 🙏🙏

Everything you said happened to me yes ,absolutely cannabis should be illegal to depressed people actually. From experience it helps for few weeks but it can become lethal because of psychosis or schizophrenia. One might think cannabis is helpful for depression but in my case only extended the depression itself. It is like the depths of ocean of depression on canabiss.Im off meds happy ,smoked marijuana in 4 yrs maybe 4 times. It simply is not the same anymore and having a risk of being hospitiliezed and on meds is just not worth it.I personally prefer to be high on life and there is no drug that can give internal strengths and high like fitness, swimming, hiking, gymnastics, etc. All best to you❤

  • @DestroyaMusic

I want to preface my comment by saying that I’m a proponent for weed and think it should be legalized federally. With that said, it’s very disingenuous of some of you to dismiss the very real and present side effects that are associated with marijuana use. I was an every day smoker from ages 16-18 until I joined the military and had to stop. When I got discharged from the military (medical reason in basic training), I attempted to go back to smoking a year later but I noticed that I was increasingly paranoid and would become somewhat manic and start crying incessantly because I felt so down and like I was a loser. I felt ashamed of myself and like I was dirty and a failure. These feelings had nothing to do with being discharged btw, I was more than content with that.
However, every time I would try to smoke (very cheap, not heavily potent weed), I would get these feelings and go into the crying spells. I would become so incredibly paranoid and felt like everyone knew I was high and that I was being so loud even though I had my TV turned down to where I could barely hear it. I lived in my own apartment over 3 hours away from my mother but I still felt like she knew I was high and she was going to bust through my door at any moment to scorn me.
So I stopped smoking for almost another year. I got a job as a corrections officer and took pride in that so I completely stopped smoking for the 9 months I worked there. Then I left that job and one night my roommate asked me if I wanted to smoke with him and I so I did. He had some extremely strong weed that he paid a good amount for and it had been almost a year since I had smoked. When we got done smoking, we went back inside and I sat on the couch and could feel my heart beating in my throat and felt like the walls of the living were closing in and like I had a 600lb man sitting on my chest. I felt trapped, couldn’t breathe, and began to spiral into a full blown panic attack. I felt like I couldn’t talk, I kept hearing this strange voice in my head and I just kept wanting to scream. Time was stuck in a repeating loop and I couldn’t escape. I’d stand up to try to get out of the living room and then immediately forget what I was doing and then sat back down. I repeated this for what felt like hours while just screaming “Help!”. I eventually got some anti-anxiety medication from my roommate and after about 30 minutes I came back to some semblance of normal.
This same exact thing happened again months later when I was given dabs (high concentrate THC wax) but this time I ended up in the hospital and had to be restrained by police and security before I was given some antipsychotic medication and blacked out.
While I’m glad that some of you have never experienced this and are not predisposed to psychosis and schizophrenia, please don’t erase and try to minimize the lived experiences of those that have gone through this and are still suffering to this day. It’s a hellacious existence and it’s very real. I agree that marijuana has profoundly positive impacts on those who suffer with epilepsy, cancer and other diseases, weed still has some very real and consequential side effects that should not be minimized. Especially for young men who are statistically more susceptible to develop psychosis and schizophrenia.

Since then ive been hospitalized over a dozen times, in and out of psyche wards. I havent used other drugs. Realizing cannabis was destroying my life ive honestly been trying to quit for about a decade. Im nine months clean, and i crave it. My mind is coming back but not very quickly. withdrawal is more psychological than physical alrhough im itchy and my sweat stings, i would say the counter intuitive thoughts are the worst. It seems my nervous system has been maladaptively rewired to hate sunlight, excorsize and to feel more peaceful depleting my serotonin than restoring it. I feel intense depression withkut weed now. But for nine months have gone against my nervous systems intuition, and am deciding to stay off it permanently. Its actually very addictive and withdrawal is real...just not stereotypical. This has been very interesting to learn about! I was wondering if there is a difference between the "transient" psychosis you mentioned and the kind of psychosis that is related to the increased risk of developing schizophrenia? I ask only because if 70% of participants with no special vulnerabilities experienced this transient psychosis when administered THC, and the statistic is 1 in 3 odds of developing schizophrenia after experiencing cannabis induced psychosis, doesn't that mean about 23% of people who ingest marijuana should go on to develop schizophrenia? I feel like it would be very empirically possible to determine if nearly one in four users had this happen, no?

I agree that marijuana should be legal so it can be studied more, warnings about side effects can be placed on products. Making it legal also can weaken or disable organised crime black markets, and people that need it for medical reasons can have easier access to it. I also agree 100% that political groups deny the risks of it which is unsafe for society because it spreads disinformation and causes confusion. Also, putting people in prison for using it is a waste of tax payers money. That money can be used to treat people that get sick from it.

      You don't want to know. It's a nightmare. 😅
My husband hadn't taken out the trash yet. It was sitting by the door. I just finished watching a Japanese song on TH-cam - One Ok Rock. I somehow correlated the two and thought that the trash bag was full of body parts that the yakuza cut up, and they were sending me a message. In my mind that was the solid truth! That's just one example and it was nonstop, every minute of every day for almost a year. It was insane. I was...insane. And I remember what it felt like. I told my mom that my brain felt like a satellite in space that was spinning out of control and didn't know where to face earth. I remember my husband crying of a broken heart because he thought I would always be like that, but I was confused. I usually felt normal. My husband had to constantly tell me to take my meds, because I didn't see the need to take them.
My husband was a huge help in getting me out of it. I needed to know what was going on if I was ever to get out of that. If he had put me in a mental ward, I would have been sooo confused as to why I was there! I needed normality to help me grasp reality. He saw the worst parts of it. I didn't even know how crazy I was at the worst parts. I only remember certain things. I had to sort out my thoughts over time- a long time. He was persistent and kind in stating facts. I didn't believe him, but I did what he asked when he told me to stop certain behaviors. Liiiike....thinking I was talking to the computer whenever I typed something. I thought I had important things to say that would alter the course of humanity, but it was all gibberish. After a while my brain went "Wait....that is gibberish." I'm grateful he told me to stop typing on the computer because my brain would not have slowed down to make that important connection. I'm grateful that he was someone I highly trusted before I "stepped off the reservation". If I didn't trust him, I could very well still be crazy to this day.
Also thank God for modern medicine. Losing my mind was NOT fun!!
Funny story, I paid for a Guardian newspaper subscription but didn't remember doing that. I thought it was related to a Guardian class in a game I play called BDO. The bank actually refunded us the money after we thought that we had been hacked. Like - the level of nuts I was was waaaaay out there. I respect the bank for refunding us the money, because it was my mistake.

While I agree with most of this, it's important to note other factors widely documented to mediate the risks, such as adolescent use, frequency and amount smoked, and significantly the levels of THC to CBD, as CBD has antipsychotic effects. There isn't yet definitive evidence to suggest CBD reduces the increased risk, but many studies have found it to so far. Potency is essential to consider as THC levels have risen drastically in recent years to more dangerous levels. This has been linked to increased psychotic disorders within the population in countries with typically higher THC levels. Psychosis symptoms are also more likely when THC is ingested due to higher bioavailability.

My experience with weed is for a year. I remember i had 3 instances that somehow felt like pyschosis. The last one was horrible. It goes like this when i would take weed and i was in a good mood, i would be laughing and joking and would be having the best time of my life. But the times that i had bad experience was when i was already kinna depressed and stressed and the weed made me anxious and i started panicking. It happened two times but i thought it was fine cause it wasn't really a big deal cause other times i really laugh, joke and have fun while playing games. But i remember the last time i had, (was depressed and anxious already) i started having panic attack, i felt like i was losing control, i had strange bloody and dark hallucinations. I got very scared that i couldn't leave the house for days. Though i stopped the smoking i had continuous hallucinations and p
Blown out panick attack and was scared to death. Got hospitalized and got under med for a month. Since then never smoked once.
It intensify what you're already feeling. Therefore if you're already depressed, stressed and anxious the chances of getting pyschosis is 100 %

ive been smoking for about 7 yrs, i take multiple dabs everyday and even know some oldies that have been smoking fine for way longer than me, more in the ballpark of 20+ yrs and been fine ... ive maybe seen around 4 instances of ppl having panic attacks/mental breakdowns and in 1 of those cases the person had very bad bpd. i dont want to invalidate these ppl in the comments telling their experience, but i genuinely feel like its smth along the lines of maybe cut/laced products like we've seen with vitamin e acetate and phytol, or just a certain amount of the population having predisposed issues along with or to it. if u even go to the national library of medicine and look at the study urself u will see just how "inconclusive" it is to them how cannabis is linked to schizophrenia, the scientists themselves in their own paper barely even sound confident in what theyre claiming .... just see the 500 times they say smth along the lines of "an actual line of causation hasnt been found". this is like saying that breathing oxygen can give u cancer type argument for me until more studies that actually try come out

Schizophrenia is a gene, but marijuana can exacerbate that gene, revealing what was already there. I've personally experienced it as well. They thought I had permanent schizophrenia because it lasted for nine months for me. Psychosis and schizophrenia are not the same thing. Schizophrenia is permanent while psychosis is not. It's very similar to being extremely high. It's the only thing that I can relate it to. I know because I've been extremely high before. Having schizophrenia feels WORSE than being high, and I've accidentally taken 1,000mg. My mom in law is a weed nurse and her husband runs a weed company. I fully support them. For those that are susceptible with this gene, it can be a death sentence. I was an unusually happy person growing up. Working as a cashier once, I even got an award for the way that I always greeted the customer with a genuine smile. It wouldn't be a surprise at all that my body produces too much dopamine. My husband, who went to school to be a nurse, knew about excess dopamine and was the first to tell me about it. These are facts, plain and simple.

I’m pro marijuana, and love marijuana (lol). I would consider myself a connoisseur, and am well educated in the area. I range between 1/2 and 1 ounce of weed a week. 90% of people cannot handle this. (I work three jobs, and am a full time college student who received a 3.645 GPA this semester, and am a chemistry student who did not graduate high school and has a GED from prison. I’m almost always high, and have smoked for years.
I have been kicked out of the medical marijuana groups for being “anti-weed” because I would call them out on their bullshit lies, like it cures all cancer, or cures depression. Like I have told them, lying to legalize is no different than lying for prohibition. Concentrates I believe should only be legal for medical use.
There are definitely negative consequences to its use, for example, I always loose shit😂. I looked for doctors to help me understand through testing what damages I have possibly done by smoking copious amounts of cannabis, starting at a young age. When I explain, they tell me that I know more than them and they can’t help me. Reduction in gray matter in the brain is probably the most serious I have read. One issue I have with this psychosis issue, is that it is beyond clear that the medical community has no idea about a majority of mental illness. We’re in the “lobotomy stage” still of this area of study.
I don’t think they should sell edibles, people can’t handle them. If you want to make edibles and go through the trouble, you probably are one who can handle edibles. I realize this is not popular, but I don’t think weed stores (aside from medical dispensaries) should be open. It should still be like the black market was. Nobody sells you laced weed. I used to sell weed. It costs more than the weed. You only lace your own weed, or you buy it knowing it’s laced, and you pay more. Just remove all legal penalties for the market. Forget your taxes, forget your regulation. Just let it be. #ThisIsLibertarianism
