It took some work to make *everything* work via the controller... but it is possible. This mainly involved dual-binding button layouts for some of the standalone emulators (Aether, Dolphin, etc.) and downloading one keybinding app that allowed me to map the 8bitdo's "star" button to "back" on the RP4 (since, in Android, some of the standalone emulators, like Drastic, have no choice for quick save/load hotkeys, and therefore require you to pause and access the emulator UI directly to perform such actions, and have no way to so without a "back" button). I have both a Retroid Pocket 3+ and an Ayn Odin 2. My biggest beef with the Retroid design is how its thinness destroys ergonomics. Yeah, it's pocketable, that's cool. But I have large hands that cramp horribly when I play with my Pocket 3+ for any length of time. The Odin 2 is blessedly comfortable with its large smooth handles, and I can play that thing for hours.
Received mine 2 days ago and I've been playing non stop! I'm blown away by this device, especially the PS2 emulation. Thank you so much for your guide on setting it up, it was incredibly complete and well explained! I would have been lost without it.
I purchased an ayn Odin 2 mini and gave my RP4 pro to my daughter. Everyone from my youngest son to my wife now have a handheld that is dedicated to playing emulators. ❤️
Best Purchase iv ever made thanks to you. I always promote your videos to everyone that sees me with device cause i'm always stopped in public. You made me feel so cool lol
an RP4 followup with a 3:2 screen is the absolute dream right there. I hope they do it! I also hope the put the start/select buttons above the face buttons/dpad next time. I don't want to have to stretch my thumbs over sticks to hit such buttons. I have RSI and that position is not comfortable, even if just for the mere moments it takes to press them.
16:9 is great for streaming and modern gaming. Not sure how I feel for switching to a 3:2 screen when we already have an RP2s with a 4:3 that can be dedicated for older emulation. If anything the RP2s should get the upgrade to 3:2 and they should just continue improving the RP4 at what it is currently doing.

This device is easily my favorite handheld device I have ever had. Feels amazing and the fact I am able to carry my childhood anywhere and play on it with amazing performance is just mindblowing still to this point 🙏 10/10 from me.
Of all the devices I've ever owned, this is my favorite. Being able to play so many consoles in a handheld has helped me play so many amazing games I thought I'd never bring myself to play. This is the best general overview video of this device I have seen yet. It is a very necessary follow-up to the many videos that have come out over its lifespan, and I especially appreciate the focus on Emulation Station
bought this before my ROG Ally Z1E. Wish the Pocket 4 Pro was a bit more powerful when it comes to emulating the more GPU-demanding PS2 titles bc I really loved the form factor.
I just got one of these when they went on sale on Aliexpress recently. Only paid $160 for the Pro. Your reviews are why I pulled the trigger since I knew it'd be a good device. My Odin Lite has had issues lately and this is a small upgrade over it and it feels better in the hand.
Bought the RP4Pro (and actually quite a few retro handhelds as well!) thanks to your reviews, thanks! It is actually a great console and I couldn't recommend it enough to all my friends :D
Russ is on the ball with this one. I think a "Retroid Pocket 4 Flip" release is coming very soon / imminent. Like September 2024. I don't think we will get an upgrade to the RP2S at this point, since the profit margins aren't quite there, and the Dimensity chipsets can be warm. I don't think we will be getting a RP5 in the usual November timeframe. The RP4 options are still largely unchallenged, and the sister company had released the AYN Odin2 Mini, not too long ago. I think we might get an upgrade to the RP5 around June 2025 which is just around Tax Time. However, what sort of upgrades to expect we have no idea. It could be insignificant, like just a small chipset bump, or it could be a major overhaul as a smaller device with a larger screen, new screen tech, etc etc. Time will tell, but Russ is onto something here.
I still have my Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, but unfortunately I eventually experience the Broken Spring Triggers. Mine was the Day One Launch although thankfully I know how to Replace the Springs. However this isn’t a Long Lasting Solution as you will need to Replace the Springs again.
Ended up upgrading mine to an Odin 2. The RP4 is great for older systems with the d-pad on top. However, once you hit Gamecube/PS2, the experience is much more enjoyable on a larger screen with the left stick up top. Wish I would have just went with the Odin at the beginning.
Yeah, I think it's a bit of a weird choice that they moved the d-pad to the top as the devices got more powerful. It's better than ever at emulating devices that focus on the analogue stick but they moved it into the secondary position. Older Retroid handhelds had the stick at the top but not enough horsepower to make that much use of it.
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 Agree to differ. I hate the angle of approach to sticks at the bottom and I think there's a reason GC, Dreamcast, Switch and all Xboxes have had the left stick at the top. It's the perfect place for games that primarily use it. I do like to use controllers with the d-pad at the top for systems which only had a d-pad, but I have less powerful handhelds for that.
I ordered the pro model based on your review and impressions about a month ago, and made use of your super useful setup guide. I couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase. Thanks a lot for these great videos! It plays every emulated game I wanted perfectly (with one minor exception), and it plays Genshin and ZZZ at full speed with zero problems. It's a really great device.
I just got th RP4 pro and two weeks later they announced the RP mini and then shortly thereafter they announced the RP5 and from the images I’ve seen they’re quite beautiful, love that they place the cross on top, as that is the main issue I have with the 405m from Anbernic.
At 4:27 you say that you’ve never had any complaints about the fan noise but that is literally your first complaint during the wrap up of your original review. This is confusing to me as I actually was put off the RP4P based on that comment.
I think it's because retroid has updated the fan at the software level that's why there's no complaint regarding the fan noise recently. (I also searched reddit in regards with this concern)
This but with OLED and 120hz is what I’m waiting for personally. Left thumbstick on top and slightly bigger size/screen and I think I would be set until it breaks.
Good review! I've had a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro for a few months now and it is absolutely fantastic! I use it as a compliment to my Steam Deck for something more pocketable. It runs so many systems well and it was very easy to get set up. It definitely has a lot going for it compared to many other higher-end handhelds on the market.
This is exactly what I was looking for. An updated review on the handheld that I've had my eye on the most for a while. It's crazy to think there are some handhelds out there are going for $175 and top out at PSP, but for $25 more you can get this that can do PS2. It's really a no-brainer purchase thanks to this review.
The joysticks on the RP4 are KING...controls overall are the best of any retro handheld I've bought. If it had an OLED screen and was *slightly* more powerful I would never need another handheld.
Perfect! I've really been thinking about getting something smaller than the steam deck for retro gaming, but I wanted the best. This video hit all the points! - I wanted an updated review. - I wanted comparable items. - I wanted pros and cons. - I wanted to know when the next version might come out.
Your review convinced me to like and subscribe, which is very rare these days. I just bought a R36S so I'm in no rush to upgrade but will definitely keep an eye on it
I used your tutorial to setup my emulation using daijisho. That was one hell of a useful tutorial vid. Thanks! I'm glad I chose rp4 over the odin 2. The decisive factor was the form. I wanted something that was a bit smaller and rp4 was the perfect size.
Many thanks for this! I didn’t realise this existed until now. Then again I only started to discover retro handhelds a few months ago and I am hooked! Looks like I can get an RG556 for about £115 delivered from AliExpress in next sale so wondering which one to get 😅
I've got the clear RP4 Pro and love it. The form factor is my favorite size. I've got large hands and have no issues. I played Prince of Persia Lost Crown and was blown away at the performance and graphics. For the cost this device blows most others out of the water. If I had a gripe it would be the time it takes to adjust everything but thats not even a bad thing, it's just everything is super customizable. Emulation station has given me a hard time when it comes to setting directories. Other than that this is the best thing I've bought in 10 years easy. I use it constantly
Funny you mention this unit: I bought this unit (gift from my GF for my birthday) because I needed to have the midrange unit between the Steam Deck and the Miyoo Mini Plus. The Pocket 2S and 4 Pro have filled in the gaps for the pocketable units quite nicely that can do the emulation of systems, size and form factor. The 4 Pro also works in its favor by being compatible with the Emulation Station front end, and the video you provided to install it and some additional apps to turn the 4 Pro into a Linux-like handheld was fantastic. Thanks Russ.
I bought mine in January and it's been fine outside of replacing the backplate after a week of use. Retroid sent a free replacement and I also bought a couple of spares. Probably won't be upgrading anytime soon, but I'd definitely consider a Retroid Mini.
I mentioned this in another video of yours, but I came to a purchase decision with my RP4P thanks in large part to your coverage and discussions on it. Love it to bits and use it almost every day. And while I did initially got it for emulation, I still feel that its capability to be a game streaming device is completely understated and has turned out to be one of the reasons I reach for it the most. I agree with you that the screen could be a tad larger, but I'd rather not sacrifice the pocketability. 100% recommend the RP4P and is, imo, quite close to the endgame.
I love my RP4 Pro. It's become my go-to PSP machine. I keep meaning to install es-de on this. I put it on my cube and love it. Would love an updated video. Have a couple other Android devices that I need to update with that front end.
Note: I gave Retroid a heads up that I was working on this video and they gave me a $10 off code (RP4SAVE10) which is good through August 18th.
That makes me sad! I ordered a week early and missed 10$. Oh well. I guess I get it before the wave that buys from this video

I am seriously considering buying the odin 2. Do you thing it is worth double the price of the rp4p?
May be you should try a newest version of PS4,and new game console sometimes bring unexpected surprise.
Received mine 2 days ago and I've been playing non stop! I'm blown away by this device, especially the PS2 emulation.
Thank you so much for your guide on setting it up, it was incredibly complete and well explained! I would have been lost without it.
Do you have many collected classic game console game cards at your home, dear friend?
Front firing speakers, select and start on the top at the two sides of the screen, a 3:2 screen: all of these would make this device the one for me ❤
I purchased an ayn Odin 2 mini and gave my RP4 pro to my daughter. Everyone from my youngest son to my wife now have a handheld that is dedicated to playing emulators. ❤️
Best Purchase iv ever made thanks to you. I always promote your videos to everyone that sees me with device cause i'm always stopped in public. You made me feel so cool lol
Oh man, if they released a Retroid Pocket Flip that was as powerful as the 4 Pro but with a bigger screen, I'd definitely get that.
Just got mine set up this week thanks to your super helpful guide! Absolutely love it and already recommended it to my friends!
Did u had someone do it for u? And how long it took to set it up bro
an RP4 followup with a 3:2 screen is the absolute dream right there. I hope they do it!
I also hope the put the start/select buttons above the face buttons/dpad next time. I don't want to have to stretch my thumbs over sticks to hit such buttons. I have RSI and that position is not comfortable, even if just for the mere moments it takes to press them.
Please use KTR1's screen 🙏
Stop kungfu gripping the controller
16:9 is great for streaming and modern gaming.
Not sure how I feel for switching to a 3:2 screen when we already have an RP2s with a 4:3 that can be dedicated for older emulation.
If anything the RP2s should get the upgrade to 3:2 and they should just continue improving the RP4 at what it is currently doing.
@@toughmango1092 3:2 is a perfect middle ground for making both 16:9 and 4:3 content doable on the same device
@@MrScottyTaytechnically, but i imagine that the average consumer would be disappointed with a device that compromises for every use case except like gba
I just bought a RP4P and love it. It fits a perfect spot for portability and power. I'm very interested in seeing what they come up with next!
The RP5 being teased today was intentionally done to force Russ to make a new video 😂
It's a blast to see you representing some of my favorite musicians! OPIV and now Jawbreaker! My RP4 Pro arrived just yesterday and I'm loving it.
I paid $165 for mine including shipping and taxes on aliexpress really happy with it. Its stopped my urge to keep buying different cheaper devices because its so small and runs so much
When did you purchase yours? I've been holding out for a good sale like that
What? I always check aliexlress daily and the cheapest i found i around 230 euros..
Yes. Also looking for a good deal on this device. If I could get it for 20-25% cheaper it is probably a no brainer to pick up.
Spotted your Jawbreaker tshirt! One of my all time favorite bands! I’ve been really enjoying your videos these last couple of months as I contemplate getting a device! They’re extremely informative and well presented!
If you are watching this in october, the RP5 and RPMini were already announced with release at the end of the month
But they’re also on sale now for 135 and 165👀
@@lanova13 true, another thing i found out the other day is that the Mediatek chipset on the RP4P is actually faster than the SD865 that the RP5 will receive. Dont know why they would nerf down the cpu for the new one, but yeah its worse. I was excited for it, but now i might go with an Odin because of that...
@@Driftuner I’m literally thinking of Odin 1 pro because of that and the only thing I’m wondering is how many of my newer games can i play on it with better screen and mods
Mine arrived 2 weeks ago. Followed all your steps and haven’t put it down since. Love this thing!
@29:43 - Two weeks later, they announce the Retroid Pocket 5 :)
This device is easily my favorite handheld device I have ever had. Feels amazing and the fact I am able to carry my childhood anywhere and play on it with amazing performance is just mindblowing still to this point 🙏 10/10 from me.
That Jawbreaker shirt goes hard!
Got it last month, bought the grip, too. Absolutely happy with its performance
Jawbreaker shirt made me like this channel even more.
I was just coming here to say the same thing!
Jawbreaker fans who play fake Chinese gameboys: There are dozens of us!
@@crackity_j DOZENS OF US!
@@crackity_jthis is scarily accurate depiction of me. i have a jawbreaker t-shirt aswell haha
Had mine for a few months and I still use it basically every day! Such a great device.
Using an RP2s. My plan is to wait for the 5 pro to be released the give it several months for any issues to be found.
The way I like to think about it is that it's pretty indisputably the best, most powerful device that's still pocketable
That title actually goes to the Odin 2 mini, but that's in an entirety different price bracket.
@@Patrick-bn5rp truw but some would argue the odin mini albeit smaller than the odin 2 isnt as pocketable to the extent of the rp4 pro.
@@maskedlibrarian1483 It is just slightly wider, that is true.
Couldn't agree with you, buddy. Unique feeling of pocket game console still means a lot for some gamers, they are with impressive and different memory.
I’m not even kidding, I ordered one about 5 minutes ago 😅. I’m SO excited!
bought this before my ROG Ally Z1E. Wish the Pocket 4 Pro was a bit more powerful when it comes to emulating the more GPU-demanding PS2 titles bc I really loved the form factor.
Russ the studio is looking fantastic here! Love the lighting.
How coincidental! You said you wished to have 5.5 inch display and Retroid coming out with Pocket 5 with 5.5inch AMOLED screen!
I just got one of these when they went on sale on Aliexpress recently. Only paid $160 for the Pro. Your reviews are why I pulled the trigger since I knew it'd be a good device. My Odin Lite has had issues lately and this is a small upgrade over it and it feels better in the hand.
aaaaaaand retroid just teased a new handheld (potentially rp5)😅
This is the video I needed from you that I didn’t even know I needed! Thank you, Russ!
RP5 only 3 months later of this video 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of your older videos made me want the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and this video just confirmed I made a good purchases. Thanks.
I loved my rp3, but once the battery swelled i had no options to replace it. Kinda puts me off getting a new retroid product
Been super stoked, waiting for this updated review, I absolutely love my retroid pocket 4 pro!
Ended up upgrading mine to an Odin 2. The RP4 is great for older systems with the d-pad on top. However, once you hit Gamecube/PS2, the experience is much more enjoyable on a larger screen with the left stick up top. Wish I would have just went with the Odin at the beginning.
I did the same thing I love the Odin and now i have a steam deck Oled and I love that one more lol Odin been on the back burner
hell yea
Yeah, I think it's a bit of a weird choice that they moved the d-pad to the top as the devices got more powerful. It's better than ever at emulating devices that focus on the analogue stick but they moved it into the secondary position.
Older Retroid handhelds had the stick at the top but not enough horsepower to make that much use of it.
Analogs should be on the bottom. I have an Odin mini but the split controls fuck my hands up after awhile
Well, this video didn't age well! Retroid Pocket 5 on the way on September 9th! 😅
I just got th RP4 pro and two weeks later they announced the RP mini and then shortly thereafter they announced the RP5 and from the images I’ve seen they’re quite beautiful, love that they place the cross on top, as that is the main issue I have with the 405m from Anbernic.
I’ve got mine months ago and I’m still in love with this handheld device.
(I also searched reddit in regards with this concern)
so funny. been here since 15k viewers. now 500.000
SO FUCKING AMAZING
what you have done. i always knew that there is potential.
ALWAYS GOOD QUALITY
This but with OLED and 120hz is what I’m waiting for personally. Left thumbstick on top and slightly bigger size/screen and I think I would be set until it breaks.
Good review! I've had a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro for a few months now and it is absolutely fantastic! I use it as a compliment to my Steam Deck for something more pocketable. It runs so many systems well and it was very easy to get set up. It definitely has a lot going for it compared to many other higher-end handhelds on the market.
still waiting on the Retroid Flip 2
Same!
probably gonna hold out for the 5, just cause of how late we are
Just be aware, it's always good to wait after the official launch because hardware and software issues that users may find 🤷♂️
Mine is in the mail. I am excited to hear it's still the best!
6:20 green?? My dude that is blue, teal at most. lol
It’s listed as Crystal Blue too, but it could be an honest oversight on his part hahaha
Always loved my retroid 3. Can't wait to trade in for this. Was thinking about getting the 556 but this is nice to have.
I have been wanting to get one recently… I’m not sure.
Mine's coming in the mail today, you've got me even more hype now
FIRST lol
Great vid my man! Had one on the way before this review showed up so even more psyched to get my hands dirty with it. :)
Loving the new camera set up in this vid! Not sure if its been like this for a bit but i think the setup is real slick!
Just ordered mine yesterday after watching your old review thanks!
I can NOT wait for your RP5 review.
Dude I seriously love mine. Picked it up as a sort of in between device but it’s now my go-to. Use it more than anything else by a huge margin
The joysticks on the RP4 are KING...controls overall are the best of any retro handheld I've bought. If it had an OLED screen and was *slightly* more powerful I would never need another handheld.
I love 4K video. I always watch your video on smart tv when I eating dinner.
Perfect! I've really been thinking about getting something smaller than the steam deck for retro gaming, but I wanted the best. This video hit all the points!
- I wanted an updated review.
- I wanted comparable items.
- I wanted pros and cons.
- I wanted to know when the next version might come out.
I see you answered my question with this video hahaha. Thank you! Can't wait to grab one
Looks like I can get an RG556 for about £115 delivered from AliExpress in next sale so wondering which one to get 😅
I'm always excited to hear Russ mention how much he likes the Odin 2. I absolutely love mine, but its always nice to hear some reassurance 😁.
Nice to see that they fixed the trigger issue. Ending up pulling springs from an old ps3 controller to get the triggers to work again
I also got a RP4P, based on your review and I love it. I’ll have to give emulation station a try!
Still my favorite Jawbreaker shirt, I have mine in gray. Love the content thanks for all the reviews!
I love the way you present your reviews. thanks.
I love my RP4 Pro. It's become my go-to PSP machine.
I keep meaning to install es-de on this. I put it on my cube and love it. Would love an updated video. Have a couple other Android devices that I need to update with that front end.
I got mine on your recommendation and I really love it
