Even though I have been out of college for a long time, I'd add that you should try to avoid any unnecessary clutter and try to maintain a very tidy room. Time spent trying to look for things can really be time consuming and wasteful. Another thing is to get a dorm fridge, if it is not furnished. This will be an absolute lifesaver when the dining halls and stores are closed for the night, and you are wanting a cold drink on a hot night. Or, just even a snack when you are burning the midnight oil.
I remember modeling my own dorm room in 2D, with Macromedia Flash authoring tool. Then moved furniture and sketched how things would work out. CS major too. :-) Interesting video!

Their colour spectrum is the easiest on the eyes since it is literally the kind of light we evolved with for millions of years and a single bulb is bright enough to eluminate my whole room from my desk. (I use a milk-glass lampshade though to tone it down a bit.) They are a bit expensive but my first one lasted me for almost 4 years of daily use (I knocked it over and it broke) and it's replacement is almost 2 years old now.
