John's mom here. I don't have the same degree of self control as John so I decided to use the same technique i do with potato chips. With chips I dont keep them in the house. With my phone, I have a grand total of 150 MB of data per month. Which means I leave the data turned off all the time but there's enough if I need it.

@Internet Explorer There's no need to. We live in the information age. We just have to balance the filter of information that we're constantly taking in.
Didn't you see the written eassy about what he's talking about that appers in the video at some minute? It was called something like "Thinking about your time in social media".
@@sarahromero8090 But if you read carefully you will be able to see that his name is actually written in there, under the title (as the author of the essay).
I just deleted Instagram because of you, I want to focus on the important things moving forward in life. I wasn't giving attention to my important things in life, my goals and dreams. Hopefully moving forward I'll succeed in my goals
I have one of my finals tomorrow and I literally sat till 3 am last night watching YT videos. This video couldn't have come at a better time. Thank you, John!
I took 1 month off social media back in November and it was so worth it. I also did no sugar and made more rules for the month to get me more productive. I felt like social media was taking up too much of my time. I feel like most 14 year olds like myself, other teens and even adults constantly put our priorities aside because we put the entertainment of social media first. So i had decided to take this break. Not only that, i got 5 more people to do this with me! To say it was my most productive and self confident month of my life would be completely true :) This was all because i took away social media as my centre of attention and put myself first and my priorities. I ended up getting the highest grades in my class for my exams and I felt so healthy the whole time. I suggest any of you to try it if your not ready to give social media away all at once... social media will be there next month for you to use and maybe by then you wont even want to. ;)❤
this kind of goes along with Thoreau’s main concepts espoused in “Walden”. it goes into the idea there should be a balance between society and simplicity: in today’s modern world, there should be a balance between technology and human connection. great ideas!
I would argue that rather than taking "attention" away from people, they are feeding off peoples' time. People often scroll through social media in a quite mindless and habitual state.
You are a huge influence John. I don’t think I can go as far as deleting all social media, but time spent mindlessly on these things is taking time away from my life. I understand that I get no benefit from consuming digital media, yet I continue to fall into the rabbit hole. I have deleted all the games on my phone and from this point on will work towards lowering the amount of time spent mindlessly on my phone. Thank you for final bringing this problem to my attention
We as a society are currently at a point, where we are willing to give up so many of our rights, just for the sake of technological development, which of course leads to a growing market. These developments will have advantages, that will make our lives easier and reduces risks of potential danger. But there are always 2 sides of a coin. We are willing to give up so many things, just to satisfy our own, maybe not that urgent needs. Through these times of constant change it is hard to set boundaries for these kind of developments. Im glad that there are people like you sharing valueable informations and clarify things that are happening in an unconcious manner in our society. Without people like you there wouldnt be any thought given about these topics. It is important that we start to have a real conversation about the Technological growth, so that we dont lose control, about our own creation. Thank you John And Thank everyone else who read this comment.
I’ve got control over everything but TH-cam. Deleting the App, blocking website on screen time, greyscale, push-ups when feeling the urge,... This platform is so good at soaking me in. As long as my brain knows how to get to videos it does it...and there is always a way with incognito mode or setting your own passwords for example. I changed so many things...doing sports, eating healthy, sleeping a bit longer, going for walks, I just always come back to TH-cam. I really need to get this sorted out, just don’t know how yet.
I love that you have mentioned and/or quote Mary Oliver. This is very informative. I appreciate how well you explain things in a universal way. Thanks for sharing.
Man I think I was happier when I didn't have social media. I have become really addicted and it's sad because before I would spent lots of time reading or doing something more productive
I spent a lot of time watching TH-cam videos to take my English to the next level though improve my English rapidly, i became addicted to social media. Thanks for this awesome informative video.
5:02 How did this happen? Well, a global virus outbreak causing us to get quarantined all day everyday and the only source of entertainment is technology
Very ironic to encourage limiting/eliminating notifications from all apps and then end the video with "subscribe and hit the bell notification" haha (btw love all your stuff John!)
Loving the "kinda long" transitions with something related to the chapter in the background. It catches/gets back your attention (funny because of the video topic) and offers an opportunity to sort your mind and cool down
Something interesting that relates to this topic that I think you should touch on would be the percieved "addiction" that people have to their phones and social media from a biological standpoint. Many studies have been done on the dopamine released in your brain from feeding an "addiction" such as phone use and the rewarding feedback your brain feels from interacting with others or getting likes on the internet. With your intentional attention strategy, you're basically replacing how your brain is getting that dopamine rush or satisfaction (exercise or creativity instead of social media use).
Well, yes. It's actual addiction. Designed to be an addiction by psychlogists who are expert in the field of addictions. I wonder how come some people are still unaware of this fact. All social media and on line marketing plus computer games are developed by people who have studied gambling addicts for example. So yes, any research into if or why any of this if addictive makes us much sense as trying to re-invent a wheel would have nowadays.
I do some acts that similar to your advice recently. I used to spend meaningless time on social media, just scroll down my wall. Then, turn to 25 make me more serious with my life. I put attention on things that value to me as marketing, improve my communication skills, how to learn more efficient and lastly my english. I realize it is the greatest feeling when you finish all the deadline you set in the beginning of your day. It drives me forward and make life is more meaningful now. Anyway, great videos as always bro!!
Sadly mental crisis cases are becoming bigger and bigger. This video without a doubt was ahead of its time and possibly we should apply these techniques and with your time management tutorials more than ever. The time doesn't return, and the world is getting distracted all the time and is disconnected, but from reality. None of us provide us the value that we need, and a few people are concerned about this. Thank you John for doing this 👏👏
My board exam is in 45 days. I’ve almost the entire syllabus to cover. But I can’t stop using social medias or my phone. I’ve lot’s of thing going in my life which makes me overthink a lot so my phone is my gateaway. I don’t like using my phone this much at all. I even deleted all of my social medias but i find myself doing other stuff like watching netflix or youtube.
bro, i am a technology student and i liked your opinion its like viewing something i have been doing in anew perspective. so thanks a lot for sharing this side of our technology commitment.
This is incredible work from you considering your studies at Harvard and how demanding that can be, including other things in your life. Very well done.
I just recently find myself have addicted to digital technology for a long time, which decrease my creativity and exhaust me every day. I'm about to cut this bad habit. This video help a lot. Thank you, John.
I did the same with insta and snap and currently I spend the half of time on my phone. Download quality time it's an app that helped me to disconnect myself of all the technologies and be nearer from my family and friends in the real life.
I wish there was an app that would lock certain apps after a certain amount of time spent on it during the day. Honestly the time adds up scrolling through Reddit or TH-cam and I wish I could be more efficient about it since I have a hard time limiting myself. I always find myself constantly reaching to open these apps and when I delete them it feels as if I'm addicted to a drug and it keeps calling for me to go back to it. I just know something needs to change soon so in a decade I haven't wasted as much time as I already have
If you have an iPhone you CAN set limits. -Go into your settings and select “screen time” -Select “app limits” -Add limits Bingo bango done-zo simple as that haha
First: What a nice and perfectly timed video. One can really tell that you gain a lot of great knowledge from the books you "consume" (since you are pacing through them so fast). Now to my questions: I kind of went through the same route with Instagram, etc. but how do you manage your E-mails? I get a lot of E-mails from clients/payment related stuff, a lot of spam aswell. If I turn off notifications for my E-mails I might lose clients or get in trouble for checking them too late or worse not reading them at all because they drown in Spam or the vast amount of E-mails. *Its really hard to seperate your own online business with social media use nowadays. What would you do in this situation John?* Also to be honest, I spend way too much time in WhatsApp groups. (WhatsApp and notifications are my main killers, I can get rid of Instagram, Reddit, etc. within a very short amount of time). Greetings from Germany, I love your content.
ArmaganVideos the way I deal with e-mails: cancel any subscriptions that are useless or that might distract you (so, emails from random apps or websites, also spam) and you can discipline yourself by only opening the e-mails you know are important, and ignoring those which you know can be opened later.
I created folders in my inbox like "News letters", and created rules which will automatically send emails from certain email adresses into those folders - and doesn't give me any notification, since these are emails I don't need to see immediately. I'm not sure if other email providers can do this or something similar, but I use outlook. Doesn't really help with spam though.
ArmaganVideos Here’s my take on it, if your job focuses on Emailing, there’s nothing you can do. The reason is, there’s nothing you should do. If it’s for work, then it’s a legit serious reason to check your emails. It’s not like going on TH-cam and searching up “Funny cat videos” and watching them for Hours. That isn’t important, and it’s just being unproductive. But if it’s your work, you’re being productive, and you’re getting stuff done. If you’re not happy with it, I can understand why. But just remember if you’re checking your emails for clients, you’re being productive and you’re doing stuff that benefits you instead of watching “Funny Cat Videos”
I have two emails for that. One I have is for work or formal things (like doctor appointments), and other for social media/games. I clean the inbox daily, so it isn’t cluttered and I don’t lose important info. Loool, good luck.
I was contemplating my time usage on media and how times were different a hundred years ago when technology was not used for entertainment. I made the Decision and idea to remove all my social media apps. I went to TH-cam as my last “goodbyes” and ended up seeing this video first in my recommended. It was a perfect time and this video has been very inspirational. Thanks.
Since i discovered your channel you have helped me and motivated me to have a more organized and healthy life. Recently, I've been trying to use my free time on reading and not spend much time on my phone and it definitly feels so much freer and my days are so much more productive. love your videos!
can't find the motivation or the energy to dedicate the attention to anything , this has been going for a while and my IQ is dropping and i can't focus and can't memorize easily
Here’s a few things you could do that has helped me a ton (and many others): 1. Slowly start adding responsibilities to your life. Be responsible for something that affects others lives if you fall through so that way you have a higher chance of doing it because we all know we don’t give a shit when we fail ourselves, but it seems to bother us more when we fail others. It could be as simple as taking on more at work (or getting a job in first place, anything is better than nothing). 2. Whatever you do, take pride in it and become the best at whatever it is. Even if it’s something you think is dumb such as being a cashier. You can be one damn good cashier that actually influences other people’s lives positively if you actually give a damn at being a good one. Not to mention that mentality will make you rise very fast in being a desirable employee. 3. Start cleaning yourself up. The whole new cliche of cleaning up your room applies. Stay on top of chores. Your household is a reflection of you, make that reflection beautiful. 4. Have friend/family you wish you could be closer with again? Try rekindling that fire slowly. Now these next couple are mainly what could be causing this. 1. Revamp your diet. I was in a very shitty place and I changed my diet completely and I feel amazing. General rule of thumb is to do an elimination diet of sorts. You could do one that’s not too restrictive by simply cutting out added sugars (if it’s not naturally occurring, it’s added), dairy, wheat and anything processed. Give it a month. If you feel better, but feel as though somethings still wrong, eliminate more. I had eliminated all but one food and added back foods later on to figure out what does and doesn’t bother me. Long process but very worth it. 2. Think about why you feel this way. Is it because of something someone said/did? Is it a constant figure in your day to day life shitting on you and you just don’t have any drive left? Do you feel as though you can’t compete with friends/family members, so you’re just demoralized? Or is it simply you have no clear meaning/purpose to your life? If it’s the latter, the simple answer is to apply the first rules I mentioned, especially adding more responsibility. It’ll help get you off your feet, finding purpose, and you’ll start searching effectively for what truly makes your life meaningful.
@@MasterMenahem thanks , for the record i am a science teacher so a lot is counting on me and i don't need to get another job like a cashier but i understand all this and i don't have friends and my family makes me worse if i contacted them and the cause is" who i am " and the way i think , thats the problem , i know i can change that but it needs energy and im kinda stuck mentally
@@Hisham_HMA Be the best science teacher you can then. That's actually a great job. You'll be able to potentially influence a number of kids each and every year to become great, driven people. I've had a couple teachers that have greatly changed my perspectives when I needed it most, we need more of those teachers. I also have/had trouble finding friends and my family relationship is pretty poor as well, but not as bad as yours seems to be. It definitely hurts a lot to be attacked by those that are suppose to love you. I don't know your exact problem with your family, but just reflect on whether or not you think it's possible to try rekindling it. Often times, sadly, it's counterproductive to try to save your family... it's akin to trying to saving a drowning person, they'll just make you drown with them. I'd definitely recommend to try to find a few friends though. What interests do you have? I'm sure there are clubs/organizations around that you could join where you'd find like-minded people. However, you've at least acknowledged you have to fix your stuff which is a big step to make to begin with. You're on your way man, best of luck.
Loved how you ended your video when you said "follow me on Instagram or Twitter". This shows how you use social media as a tool and are aware of its consequences if used extensively. Keep up the good work john!!
That you say it's so true. I deleted social media as Instagram or Snapchat since couple of days. It's crazy to see how much addict we are about all technologies . I also download "QUALITIY TIME" ... you will be scared to see how much time you can spend on your phone. This app help me to reduce the lazy time and enjoy the real life. It's your turn to act !
Instant sub, without even watching the video yet. Will comment again after watching, but for now, remember this: 1. YOU ARE STARING INTO A LIGHT SOURCE when you use your devices at night. Staring into the sun is bad for you and damages your retina. It's the same here. One of my clients has seen his vision improve drastically, in the colors and appreciation of "nuance" from simply doing three things: a. Going to bed earlier b. Cutting out electronics after 9 PM sharp c. Wearing blue blockers 2. Blue-light exposure reduces melatonin and growth hormone secretion. No, taking melatonin won't help, that just makes you drowsy. You have to secrete it NATURALLY. 3. Your brain gets fried. We are in a constant culture of instant gratification and are becoming dumber. Read literature after 8 PM instead, your IQ will increase and you will feel smarter on a daily basis.
Thank you John. I had 2 hours limit on my Social media a day, now it’s less than an hour. I had almost all of my notifications off but after this video I have all of them off. Really made me think.
I am really glad you're still posting. I am enjoying your videos with interesting topics such as these greatly. I hope that despite your busy schedule and implicitly limited free time, that you will continue posting every now and then on relevant topics such as this one.
And also that once your channel becomes popular, that you don't limit 99% of its content behind a paywall, like most of my previously favorite channels... thank you.
John(am I calling you right? sorry.. not used to western name system), these days I'm seriously thinking about deleting youtube app on my smartphone. I cannot stop myself watching helpless videos for hours wasting my time. Actually I don't know why I'm telling you this now but, anyway I think I should do something with TH-cam
After this video, I've been thinking about my relationship with some apps on my phone and of them is youtube. Well, I would say that although youtube has all sorts of helpless stuff and not important videos, it still has some important stuff. Like this video you just watched. I know we have stuff we like on youtube, eventhough there's a bunch of unreliable videos. So, what I'm going to do, and I would recommend you to do as well, is to unsubscribe from channels that I think are not important for me, and then set a limit in my brain to limit the time that I spend on it. I think it gets easier when you know you want to spend less time on helpless stuff.
I've tried your approach, limiting how much you use youtube is a better approach to help you develop self control rather than deleting it altogether if you enjoy it.
용용 he spoke about this in one of his older videos. How there is a algorithm in the TH-cam system to make us want to keep watching videos. He suggested to unsubscribe from channels that don’t benefit you, limit the watching by the number of minutes the videos is. For example to watch 3 10 minute video a day.
Dear John, I rarely write comments in such a serious format but the situation calls for it. I want to congratulate you for how well thought-out and structured your videos are, and for how insightful the things you say always are. Every time I watch one of your videos, I feel motivated to be better and my mind feels revived from its slumber. Thank you for that. I don't know you personally but you also seem like a genuinely good person, the kind that I want to surround myself with. Much love and respect from Italy.
I've actually had them off my phone for a week now, I still use them on my computer in a controlled way (well, Twitter and Facebook--Instagram+Snapchat are mobile only, mostly) since I definitely don't have the same addictive habits there. I'll probably reinstall them in a bit once I've figured out how I'm going to use them.
More videos with academic subjects please!! (Studying, exams, etc.) When the channel grows the content doesnt have to change, it grew because of that content!!
I really do not appreciate companies just controlling millions of people's attention for their own profit. It's really sad that making money exploiting off others is actually a business strategy. The rate at which they are improving to hold our attentions will not lead to a better world and we still appreciate them for "innovating". Just sort of reminds me of CGP Grey's Humans need not apply. Am I the only one who is unhappy how things are going just because I now lack attention to focus on things other than digital media??
No company/person is forcing you to consume their digital content/goods. In theory, your interaction with these companies (consuming their content) is a consentual agreement and you have the choice to either consume or not to consume, but of course, I’m oversimplifying this just for my point’s sake. Attention is the modern currency. Just like money, if you constantly spend it impulsively, there’s no money left for other priorities like food, bills, investing, etc. That’s why I think it’s important as consumers to spend this new currency of attention wisely. By consuming in moderation, we can maintain focus on your goals, keep a clear head, and in that way, we can be productive, healthy, and happy.
@Mealwhiles But to assume that the person on the other end of the advertisement, video, article had intentionally created that content for the sole purpose of exploiting people for money is naive. And that is basically the narrative of OP. He implies that these "companies" don't create value and instead, manipulate people just for profit while under the false pretense of "innovation." Maybe he feels this way because he is resentful of being a victim of internet addiction or maybe because he refuses to take responsibility for his own actions or maybe even because he just doesn't realize that people are actually the owners and controllers of their own attention. For me personally, I appreciate the same companies OP seems to hate. And that's because these very companies produce things I value and things I would trade my attention for like art, news, communication, educational information, the list goes on...
Your movies are motivate me to be a better person. Thanks so much. I deleted my social medias and now I've just using LinkedIn because I got a job there and increase my career.
By far this was one of your best videos because of the message and the theme. I really enjoyed it and will try to limit my social media for sure starting this whole week.

This sounds like he’s reading a well written essay.
Didn't you see the written eassy about what he's talking about that appers in the video at some minute? It was called something like "Thinking about your time in social media".
Jeff yeah he cites sources as you would in an essay

thank god he didnt delete youtube from his phone
ismini you do realise that John’s a TH-camr right?
You cant even delete it. I tried but I can't.

Im happy that TH-cam actually recommends this kind of videos
-was listening to while driving

-proceeds to pull over and look around
-realize it was because John :(
'I want to be an interesting, creative, well-educated, kind person, who has relationship with people in real life.'
Yesss!!! :)
I have one of my finals tomorrow and I literally sat till 3 am last night watching YT videos. This video couldn't have come at a better time. Thank you, John!
How was the exams tho
I took 1 month off social media back in November and it was so worth it.
I also did no sugar and made more rules for the month to get me more productive.
I felt like social media was taking up too much of my time. I feel like most 14 year olds like myself, other teens and even adults constantly put our priorities aside because we put the entertainment of social media first.
So i had decided to take this break.
Not only that, i got 5 more people to do this with me!
To say it was my most productive and self confident month of my life would be completely true :)
This was all because i took away social media as my centre of attention and put myself first and my priorities.
I just deleted all of my social media and I'm bored asf but its definitely worth it.
Isn't youtube social media though? LOL
I literally can't watch your videos without seeing Joe from You anymore, please tell me I'm not the only one.
Thank you John
And Thank everyone else who read this comment.
*Life is REALLY about making it a worthwhile one. DON'T waste it doing things you don't LOVE*
So glad I watched this. I've been considering switching to a flip phone, and this pretty much sealed it for me.
I dont really use my phone too much but I do spend most of my time reading manga ang novels like everyday.
Ran out of time to watch this video because i had to check my social media feeds

Sadly mental crisis cases are becoming bigger and bigger. This video without a doubt was ahead of its time and possibly we should apply these techniques and with your time management tutorials more than ever. The time doesn't return, and the world is getting distracted all the time and is disconnected, but from reality. I get so motivated everytime I watch your videos. Thank you John, it's undeniable that social media can be dangerous sometimes.

-Add limits

What a divine talk! Thanks bruh I uninstalling insta which is only social app I have other than YT, thanks we need more of you.
Maybe you could just turn off notifications on your phone, but still check your e-mails like once a day on your computer?
Right now I am motivated to do things that matter because of you. So thank you.
A sight of John Fish's video after institution exam.
Thanks.
But John, you are a computer science major.
Since i discovered your channel you have helped me and motivated me to have a more organized and healthy life. Recently, I've been trying to use my free time on reading and not spend much time on my phone and it definitly feels so much freer and my days are so much more productive. love your videos!
Very useful also as a content strategist as instead of wasting your time online .spend it rehearsing lines or recording .

don't know what are you talking about
if its a phone thing i don't know it im using a laptop only
Here’s a few things you could do that has helped me a ton (and many others):
@@MasterMenahem
thanks , for the record i am a science teacher so a lot is counting on me and i don't need to get another job like a cashier but i understand all this and i don't have friends and my family makes me worse if i contacted them and the cause is" who i am " and the way i think , thats the problem , i know i can change that but it needs energy and im kinda stuck mentally

Instant sub, without even watching the video yet. Will comment again after watching, but for now, remember this:
1. YOU ARE STARING INTO A LIGHT SOURCE when you use your devices at night. Staring into the sun is bad for you and damages your retina. It's the same here. One of my clients has seen his vision improve drastically, in the colors and appreciation of "nuance" from simply doing three things:
a. Going to bed earlier
b. Cutting out electronics after 9 PM sharp
c. Wearing blue blockers

I think you could set a limit in youtube. Or you could do is set a timer in the background to watch a TH-cam video like only 30 mins of watch time.
용용 lmao
Dear John,
I rarely write comments in such a serious format but the situation calls for it.

Fun fact...John is gonna be a software engineer... :)
Idk why but I watch your videos religiously and take your advice. You are an idol to me. These vids are valuable to me. Thanks
Am I the only one who is unhappy how things are going just because I now lack attention to focus on things other than digital media??
these companies do not care anymore its just about money and more money
@Mealwhiles still tho you have the ultimate control
I love this video. I have been trying to find something like this for ages, and there you go! Looking forward to hearing about that book!
