  • Our last sail this year leads us around 2 notorious capes. The first one seems to be asleep, the second one is wide awake.

    Wow, what an incredible journey you're on! Rounding the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Town must be an exhilarating experience. It's great to see how smoothly you've been sailing in these waters with a bad reputation. And kudos to you for braving those 34 knots in the harbor! You're back in the Atlantic, but not quite home yet. Keep up the amazing work, and remember, you've got a supportive community cheering you on. Happy sailing and looking forward to more exciting adventures in 2024!

    Welcome to my second home! My flat is just behind the Milnerton lighthouse you showed briefly. I hope to visit Etienne and Genevieve one of these days and will try to find you too before you leave.

    Another really good video I traded that coast on a tanker for a few years, it's very beautiful but the weather can be a little uncomfortable . Its so good to see the excellent weather forecasting nowadays . Thanks and pleasant sailing to you all .

      The locals say it’s getting more and more difficult to make an accurate forecast as the pauses between the lows are shorter and less stable

    So no long break at New Year this time? Your viewers are happy.
    Smooth sailing so far around these waters with such a bad reputation. Then again, 34 knots in harbor while moving and surrounded by obstacles must get the blood pumping. Congratulations on being back in the Atlantic. Not quite home though.😊

      We might be able to stick to the weekly schedule if we publish the 2nd year on the Outremer 55 summary next week. Almost ready, just waiting on the voice over. Sailing to Namibia in the second week of January

    Nice video and special to me being South African. You are 2 years behind our trip following that route. PE is my favourite city but sadly since the Algoa bay yacht club fell apart the docks are now a mess but we spend 10 days there to spend Christmas with my 90 year old dad at that time. The black ore dust is nasty to your boat so you can be glad you did not stay. We then spend 2 months in the V & A marina before crossing the Atlantic. It’s a great pity you guys did not visit Tanzania/ Zanzibar and Kenya as you really can spend a year sailing around there. We sold our cat in the Caribbean and are back in South East Asia on another bigger cat enjoying this part of the world for at least another year before we cross the Indian Ocean again.

    That note at 8:40 about autopilot on Wind Mode etc... and the boat turning into the wind. I still don't fully understand this but I've experienced it more than a few times. Once I was on watch, day time, carefully watching the display, and jotting down heading notes. If something happened I could get back on course. (I had found that remembering heading sometimes I'd be remembering them from the day before.) Being a good sailor boy. Then someone else on board said, "Hey, which way are we going?" We'd turned 180° even though I was watching for it, I'd completely missed it. I think I was trying to figure out how to re trim the jib.
    I think the first indication of this 'phenomenon' is when the more experienced people on board hesitate to use Wind Mode.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Wind mode is a very nice feature but indeed you still have to pay attention. In this case the boat speed sensor stopped working, it basically a little wheel in the bottom of the hull spinning by the force of the water. When it gets stuck or doesn’t send a signal anymore the boat speed will be 0
      The boat speed is used to calculate true wind. When it’s 0 the displayed true wind will be equal to the apparent wind. Going downwind true wind is used for wind mode and the boat will start sailing too high apparent wind angles

    Drone video at sunset is just candy on top of Christmas treats!
    Outremer has been providing maintenance on route. How about sail makers? Maintenance is good PR and great help when wear on boat starts to show.
    Has your initial sail material choice been right?

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes we’re really happy with all the sails. We were a bit sceptical about the gennaker at first but once we learned how to handle it it became our most used sail.
      Can’t complain about the service from Incidence as they send someone to Cape Town to bring the new gennaker and have a good look at the main. Very happy!

    My favorite keyboard is a Logitech G213 which is a corded backlit gaming keyboard. I love having a backlit keyboard. I noticed in your video today that you have a backlit keyboard which flashed on and off. My backlit keyboard will cycle colors according to what options I chose, but I find that having zones of the keyboard a certain color works best for me. i don't think i could live with my keyboard flashing LOL. Safe journey.

    Looks amazing! I followed your channel a few years back, and now found it again 🙂 You have been busy ❤ making great videos. I hope you have the time to answer a question, as you seem to have the experience I'm looking for. On your Lagoon, you were flying a Wingaker sail, but now on the Outremer, I see both symmetrical and asymmetrical spinnaker, but no wing sail (I admit, that I haven't seen all the new episodes yet). On one of your video I also saw a Parasailor type sail, but not sure if that was a follow boat. Anyway, we are on a Neel 51 trimaran and looking to buy some lightwind sails (have ordered a code 0 so far). With all your experience now - what would be your recommendations for light downwind sail? Seems like you gave up on wing sails? Perhaps you already discussed this in specific episodes that I just haven't found yet 🙂. Happy sailing!

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      We did have a Wingaker on the Lagoon but it died during the first ocean crossing (as most similar sails on this ARC did 🙈)
      In our experience a sail with a wing doesn’t have a lot of added value over a simple symmetrical spinnaker (on a multihull). The stronger symmetrical spi we selected had the advantage that you can leave it on during squalls as you can see in our first Atlantic crossing on the Outremer where true winds reached 41 knots
      The downwind sail we have used the most so far is the gennaker, 185m2 stormlite, we’re on our way now to receive the new one as it’s halyard broke a couple of months ago.

    Quick question. I have never seen you helm from the lower position. Do you ever use the versa-helm? Is it a useful feature? Many thanks. Dave.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      We use it in the full down position when it’s raining and in the half down position in circumstances where we might have to use the helm quickly. 99% of the time we steer with the remote of the auto pilot

    sometimes you shouldn't listen to mike, that was the calmest Knysna heads will ever be, you missed out. Glywo seems very rushed, watched all your vids and it seems to be the trend, at least we know now.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      We saw that we were able to get in but preferred sailing the same day over motoring the next day.
      The pace of the GLYWO kind of suits us, it’s half the pace of the Oyster and Workd Arc rallies
