My biggest sailing mistake yet. Crossing the gulf stream into the Bahamas.

  • I hope we all learn something from this video. I leave the port of Miami and cross the gulfstream heading towards Bimini. I end up aground on the beach at night. Near the end of the video can be hard to watch so be warned.

    Best TH-cam sailing vid I’ve seen, for so many reasons!
    Dude, I have been in that position, I have run aground with fading light, I have gone places I shouldn’t have, and I too have failed to listen to that little voice telling me I was making a mistake, and I have gambled with the Sailing gods, but never with such high stakes !
    I just bought my ‘84 Catalina 30, I’m in Annapolis, and I’ve got eight weeks to get her ready to get down to Florida and cross to the Bahamas in a few months.

    Congrats on making it to the Bahamas, even with the difficulty. Many sailors (vs mototboaters) leave Fl to Bahamas from No Name Harbor area and they leave like at 5AM before full light. That gives them 12-13 hrs of light and the sailing angle has the current adding 2 knots to their speed but doesn't push them past Bimini channel entrance.
    The channel going into Bimini is tricky, lots of shoaling but luckily just sand. Looking at the charts and your video, looks like you were coming in a little bit N of the EW entrance part of the channel, and aiming for the 2 blinking channel markers. So seems you grounded on the southern end of the sand/shoaling N/S spit that extends a long way from land at the south end of N Bimini. There used to be markers there but the constant shifting shoaling rendered them quickly obsolete. As you said, you were lucky and will try to enter new harbor during daylight and good luck with the rest of your sailing in Bahamas.

    I've made a sailing crossing. You are right; you can NOT capture the size of waves on camera. Just doesn't show how big they are. No matter what, avoid entry to chanels at night in unfamiliar areas. Likely no damage on the keel. They are pretty stout.

    I know the feeling of running agound in a sailboat. It is the most hopeless feeling. This is where a sailor is tested if he/she tends to panic, or find the solution.I ran aground twice with my sailboat on the same day. There were so many things running through my mind while the waves rocked the boat. I have a swing keel and a small 25' boat, so the situation was far removed from what you experienced. I can't imagine being in a fixed keel under those circumstances! My hat is off to you!! Neptune was looking out for you for sure!!

    Hope you are doing well and your boat is good. The sand may have saved the boat. Be careful moving forward. Showing mistake and understanding what you did wrong and what you would do differently is important. Great videos 👍

    Now that my heads levelled out & I can write again, all I can say is you have put sailing to the heights of uTube videos! I'm not sure if anyone else has told you but you deserve whatever type of award recognition that uTube puts out & I know I saw a ceremony for just that altho unfortunately I don't recall the name of it. Perhaps one of your other subscribers might know of it, post the name & your "crew" could put your work up for it! I did mean it when I suggested 1/2- a million, wouldn't be over estimating a subscriber list!!! Just so proud of you Michael & I sure realized what I was missing when I watched the trip all over again on the big screen. Couldn't figure out how to like or comment on it tho but no problem just went back to my iPad & left the comments.     Great video and great advice. Pooped is a wave crashing into your cockpit, broaching is when you are overpowered, the boat turns upwind and skids out. What you were refering to is a knock down.

    Good video of what not to do. I think I would have left Florida way earlier to arrive during light to a shallow water area around Bimini. Good to see you got lucky; your boat took the hit and came out ok. I think anyone who sails learns a variety of lessons. They might be different lessons but, all sailors learn lessons; some the easy way, some the hard way. Safe travels !

      No doubt. Ive done many passages just like this one.. hundreds. My plan was to get onto the bank and anchor but condidtions changed to a small craft warning mid passage. I figured I could do 5 knots and get into bimini one hour before dark if things changed. I averaged 4 knots with the current running north. It was just a bad call. If your out here long enough shit will go wrong eventually. I didnt plan to go in a night.

      Alternator failed after 3 days in Bimini.. had to cross back to Miami. I now have a working ALT... tried to cross back but was rejected.. gulf stream is nothing to take lightly.. Im in key largo now making sure I can cross back.. I just could not get the angle I needed.. had to head south. Here now.. Bahamas or bust all over again..

    Hey Cap, thank you for the video and your humility. I think it truly helps others chase their dreams. I do have a question for my own learning, not criticism. While crossing the gulf stream I noticed that you had secured the main and was running just the jib. Was wondering why you made that decision vs rolling the jib and running a reefed main? I would assume you'd have better control with the main. Again I am a learning Sailor and I am looking for your perspective not trying to judge.

    The Sceptre 36's are one tough boat. I smacked a rock a couple of years ago with mine . Only dented the lead keel and stress cracking at hull this was an easy fix.
    Check you keel bolts and the cross ribs for cracking where it is tabbed to the hull. I expect you will be ok. Carry on with your grand adventure.

      Im planning on hauling out around Arpril 15th. Going to do a full inspection and bottom paint job. Sceptre is a great maker of boats. The ones that are still around seem to be holding firm. Got to love it! Id buy another Sceptre if I could for sure. She always pulls through.

    Sometimes the best solution is to stay offshore. Can heave to, or change destination.. perhaps gun cay to the south, or sail north and onto the bank. At least less stress and check in somewhere else. Sometimes we get fixated on making a target, and that does lead to trouble. Hope your Bahamas journey is easier

    Best to go in a port or anchorage only at daytime, eventually flying your drone above, to see where the deeper blue water is and to be able to avoid the shallow water sandbars.

      Thanks! After 6 months on land Im back on EV in Florida as I write this! I appreciate your comment! Im editing the 1st video for season 6 and are hesitant to post it. Why? Because its a shit show here and this old boat is a disaster. I have a feeling Im going to get murdered in the comments this season as usual. But Im going to upload it because the reality of living on an old boat is real and people should know what they are getting into. Its going to be interesting I can tell you that. Whats your opinion? Should I just show it as it is? I can see why most people post only the good side of sailing.. sunsets and bikinis I wish I had a nice new boat with no issues.. sadly thats not the case.. But Im going to do what I have to do for all to see I guess. Apparantly Im a danger to the sailing community! Some of these commenters get to me sometimes but I try not to let it bug me. I appreciate your comment

      ​​@@sailingEV888Post it. Don't worry about other people. I also have a sailboat in Titusville, Florida and doing what you are doing. I'm currently in the Philippines right now taking a break. People want a fantasy and sailing can be that at certain moments but on average it's your best guess at what to do in the given moment. Like I said other channels show young women in bikinis (nothing wrong with that 😂) but the edited best side of sailing. If a person wants to actually sail that's a disserve to them and that can get someone hurt. No, post it and keep going. This video was amazing and really hit me. Keep going.

      Most of the 1000 nm has been somewhat uneventfull. The gulfstream is nothing to take lightly thats for sure. Im ok and EV is back to her old self.. floatin the Harbor like nothing happened.

    When aiming for the green , what was your heading , if you had been swept sideways by the waves and gulf stream , you sail into danger , what part of bimini were you entering because on my charts it's a bit shallow ,

    I appreciate you for posting this. I made my first trip to west end solo last year. It was pretty uneventful except I wound up way north and anchored on the banks. On the way back the wind and seas cam up big for just the last hour. It was scary but I made it. On my way south again but this time heading to Georgetown via Bimini. My boat is Ramble On. I’m on AIS.

    Be safe man. Thinking back I still get emotional from things that happened to me on the thorny path. Avoid hogs key reef and great inagua. I found 25' seas there a d truely thought I was gonna die. I was only using a radio direction finder. Lots more tec these days. The more worried I got the more people showed up out of nowhere to help. Be bold push your fears. Ask for help. I had a massive tanker turn course and knock down waves for me to turn around and go back to great inagua. If not for that I would be at the bottom of Mona passage.

      Thanks for the info. I think the key here is to wait for perfect weather. Have all my spares and a good working knowlage of charts.. I will take your advice and ask. I have Steve Cantwell "The Quartermaster" as my on shore guy. He has sailed all through the exhumas and down to Georgetown many times. He warned me about tides and narrow inlets. Lots to consider and research about. 4 more months and I get another shot.. Nice chatting with you. Hope to see you in the comments in future videos. Cheers Captain.

      I had to order a new drone. Even though I have DJI care it would have taken ages to get a new one. Price of being a youtiber. I only hope you guys enjoy the episodes. It has cost me everything.

    I have done the crossing 8 times and waited for less than 10 knots of wind and motor over. Getting the stream over as fast as possible, I also subscribe to adage of if you think about it do it.     seems like the seas were really unsettled? what caused the large waves? was day before rough and it hadnt settled yet? what would be the best wave and period range for a smooth sail?

      B3st to wait for a front to move through. You want the wind to clock around from the south east. Never cross in a northerly wind. (I'm no wind at all from the north) I just did that same crossing yesterday and this time, it was a peace of cake.

    Don't sweat or feel bad , i've sailed down that channel at night in 25 knot winds drunk an hit the dock with all the sails up pissed to the gills passed out , i think your issue is with spending your time getting worried instead of enjoying the thrill of still being alive 🙂

    Oh crap, that was intense. Is it laundry time? Seriously though, congratulations on making your dream of sailing to the Bahamas. How cool is that. And you got your drone back! But this is one video I’ll NOT be showing my wife. Lol. She’s slowly warming up to the idea of sailing. I’m showing her realistic videos of what to expect out there so she wouldn’t be blindsided…but not this real😅

      I know for a fact that god was on my side that night. An unuasually sized wave came out if knowhere picked up my boat and flung her into the channel. The gopro had run out of batteries which was weird because it was charged.. someone up there was looking out for me. I will count my blessings and never make that mistake again!

    Wow that's crazy! I hit a rock, but it was daytime. Bent my rudder shaft. My buddy got scared and quit. This was the Northern Penn. Of Newfoundland, scary situation! But I sailed four days and made it home, with some crazy winds! I know what you went through! Not a good situation! What are your plans for this winter?

    Shallow boat so you can stay inside the banks. My trawler was 4' draft so I pushed it and was glad I could. Like being in a pond. I followed a guy Mr Fuller. From Fuller brush company. He was familiar and took me all the way to Georgetown.

    Have to be careful with the lights. They can be seen 360 degrees. Without having a second light or some kind of fix on something to give you perspective, they can hurt you. And you want to take care of cracks below the water line. They happen for a reason and should be checked into. Canterbury more about the waves. Film or photos just don't show how it is.

      I agree. So I did a full inspection of the hull out of the water and fixed a few places. There was some cracks around the keel. More like stress cracking. I addressed it with marine tex.. mostly a band aid solution. Going to do a full bottom job next haulout ect. Truth is I couldn't afford a full tear down job this season and did what little I could. Fingers crossed.

    in my short stretch to chub cay I ran into a couple of different very crazy scenarios one being like an idiot I put a radio right next to my compass cuz I wanted some music and thought nothing about it until I was a hundred miles off track halfway to the Bahamas from Miami has a sailboat with towels being waved at me from a boat I pull over next to the boatand the people are panicked out of water no drinksthey passed through the Bahamas somehow without seeing island turned around came back passed through them again without seeing and island and was halfway to Miami and I told him I had them I gave him a setting back the direction I just came but my compass was off from a speaker on my radio being too close to these were my first steps into the Bermuda triangle I remember them well

      I agree. Seawater ingress into that area could lead to corrosion and the bolts breaking with stress. I had a good look and it was mainly stress cracking. I've decided to do destructive testing next haulout. It's weighing on my mind. I'm not going to do any major offshore passages and hope for the best. For now it will be light wind sailing north to my home port and a full extensive refit of this old vessel.

    Try to run on the solid rock with 7kn of speed with the boat type you have, that would be the end of the story for the boat. l ran to the rock with my boat, the boat was stopped in just a second and only what happened to the boat it was a stretch into the top coat. Nothing is stronger then the full keel boats.

    Heating the beach? No you were hitting the sandbar that guards the channel into Bimini. Follow the chart notes that tell you you HAVE to approach the entrance channel from the south, not the west. But what do you expect from a sailor who doesn't know thw difference between being pooped and broached.

    Another lesson learned use a camera, even a smartphone camera, that deals with low light. The Gopro night video was horrible and that was the CenterPoint of this video...

      Dude I'm a cinematographer with IATSE 667, 25 years. I'm very aware of low light cameras. We shot star trek discovery with Cook S4 low light primes T1.4. My friend would you put your smartphone out on deck to get soaked in the middle of a small craft warning? I was more concerned about dieing.. I appreciate your comment regardless.. Even waterproof gopros I've still gone thru 7 now... I actually have a set of primes onboard T 2.8. And a BMPCC cinema canera However I never use it. Sailing and expensive cameras have cost me a small fortune.. it's the salt water... I try harder next time.

    i hit bottom at night entering johns pass madera beach fl. in a morgan 28, my fault i knew the pass but neglected to realize exstream low tide, with better than 2 ft following swells, aux power was running, first hit i did hard left rudder and full power, next swell launched us forward, second hit boat is into a port turn, now ive got the mic calling may day, boat now becomes full broad side to the swells and rolls over on the starboard hull with the third hit, everything below went crashing everywhere, still full broad side to the swells now im braceing for the 4th hit, silence no hit, full power we came around bow into the swells and escaped to deep water, im checking bilge for water, no leaks, morgan out island is a tough boat, we hit hard 3 times, i was shakeing with terror and adrenalin, dropped anchor a mile out kept watching for water in bilge, no sleep with boat reaching back and forth on the anchor pitching rolling, in the swells, coast guard responded to my may day, i was beyond happy to tell them all ok back in deep water, next morning no visible hull damage, two others were aboard, looking at me like wth you almost got us killed,

      Sounds very similar to my case. These are the incedents that make us better sailors. You have to get burnt to really know the fire. Also there is something freeing about admiting our mistakes and letting the world know the real story here. Most sailors would never ever speak of it again.. I only hope people learn from our mistakes. Thanks for telling your story. Id like to hear it in person one day.. Im back on my boat tomorrow after 6 months on land.. I wonder what trouble Ill get in this season. Stay tuned to find out..

    NEVER NEVER NEVER enter an unfamiliar port at night, especially in difficult conditions in a place like the Bahamas. That’s a kindergarten rule. You said several times “this is sailing”. You should have clarified it to “this is bad sailing”.
