Thanks Ray! :) I try to be myself but at the same time I try to make my very dull, boring voice sound a bit more interesting so that people dont fall asleep watching the vids! haha!
Thanks gazzer! :) I think iv only ever removed an engine from an escort through the top of the bay once. I much prefer dropping it out the bottom. More parts to remove but much easier to do, especially when im working on my own.
Wow!! Thats amazing!! dont suppose u have any pics of the production line from ur time at Ford??? If u do Id love to see them and share them on my facebook page if u dont mind?? facebook.com/marcushayesford
Hi Marcus, isn’t it really nice when you have a super clean car to work on, no dirty fingernails lol 😂, these videos of yours take me back to a nicer time when I sold my motorcycle to buy a car, as my then girlfriend hated getting into and out of the bike gear, so I got a MK2 Ford Escort ghia, tawny brown with a beige vinyl roof. The guy who owned it before me had put a lumpy cam , twin choke Weber carb and a four branch manifold and straight through exhaust. Anything below 4 grand and she was dead, but above that when she came onto the cam ,she lifted her skirt and ran like she was being chased by a naked man with a hard on. I freaking loved that wee car. Awesome videos Marcus. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧Ps.......could I ask you why you didn’t just fit a type 9 Ford gearbox 5 speed.
As always top video Marcus amazing motivation I split my engine and gearbox on my mk3 escort and put back no drive? Not sure what I’ve done wrong always a challenge I say 👍
Thanks! 🙂 . . . . Thats strange. What parts did you change when you split the engine and box??? I dont have loads of experience with mk3 escorts but I replaced the auto gbox in my dads before. Are the driveshafts in the box correctly???
I just changed the clutch release bearing I’ve taken it apart again today think it may have been the pressure plate. Not tried it yet ran out of daylight I’ll keep posted Marcus
Cool! 🙂 It must be something really silly if all you've changed is the bearing. make sure the friction plate is the correct way round (such an easy mistake to make) Let me know how you get on mate. . . . . Id love to see your mk3 by the way! feel free to send some pics in a message to my facebook page facebook.com/marcushayesford . Also let me know if u mind me sharing the car on the page. 🙂.
Hi Marcus, thats a sweet MK1. Did you finally sort the problem? here is my 2p worth, Is that a pinto cover, as it could be higher tha'ts another reason for no play on the fork. A Common thing with conversions is mismatched parts, ie flat tip clutch cover fingers and flat face bearings, or curly tip covers with curved face bearings, Can only have 1 of each, or bearing wont centralise.
Thanks! Yes the problem was the release bearing. I read somewhere that a Ford Ranger bearing can be used instead of a type 9 one and although they are VERY similar in size the Ford Ranger one takes that little bit extra space inside the bellhousing so it didnt work. I was able to improve a couple of things whilst the engine was back out so its not all bad. :)
hi Marcus, do you need to fit a different clutch arm or are you using the one that just comes with the box ? was just wondering if there is not enough pivot or throw as well as the bearing not moving enough to disengage. just a 1p thought mate.
Thanks Mark! :) I dont know much about the mk5 escort rs2000 engines BUT i once had a mk6 escort 1.8 GTI and alot of people would put the 2.0 zetec engine into GTIs instead of the rs2000 lump. 2.0 zetecs are easier/cheaper to get hold of, there are loads of aftermarket parts available for them and they have a timing belt rather than the timing chain found in the rs2000 engine. Hope that helps. . . . . . feel free to send some pics of ur mk2 in a message to my facebook page facebook.com/marcushayesford so i can have a look. Ill share them on the page as well if u like?? :)
Thanks Stephen! :) Altho the ST170 engine is badged as a 'Duratec' its actually just a uprated blacktop zetec. U can still fit it to a mx5 box but u need an adapter plate. I THINK the mx5 gbox bolt pattern is different from the rx8 one but www.retro-ford.co.uk/ can sell u an adapter plate and theyr very helpful so im sure if u gave them a call they will be able to advise u about the mx5 gbox conversion.
hahaha! put it on my tab Fredin! :) Iv done this too many times. I really thought the ST170 lump in the mk1 would only need to be fitted once before i could fire it up but it just wasn't to be. It'll be alot better tho with the little changes im going to make before it goes back in.
MARCUS HAYES yeah i was feeling your pain going backwards to go forwards but it had to be done!! Onwards and upwards clear each hurdle one at a time! Been on abit of a drive with things myself but unfortunately none has been aimed at my fiesta ZS unfortunately ☹️. Although that 1series is due to be delivered tomorrow morning so i will be needing to take you up on that offer of space for the MK1 Fiesta but I am actually looking forward to giving it a small amount of attention whilst its at yours get it all up and running, bucket of water and try do a few things to make it resemble the way it was when I got it from you!! Also be good to see the old girl on your channel give her abit of limelight and ill bring the old history folder along 👍🏻

I absolutely love twin 45s!! Iv had them on a couple of engines in the past. When i put the zetec in Maude i wanted to keep things simple so i went with the DGV. It made more power than i expected and as I use the car daily Im loving the slightly less fuel consumption and the fact I dont need to keep adjusting the balance like you do with DCOEs. I probably wouldnt make that much power with a set of DCOEs on a standard engine anyway. . . . . All that said I may switch to throttle bodies one day. Ill see how i get on with the Jenveys on the mk1 first. :)
Thanks Paul! :) Maude will be fine mate. Im still driving her everyday and giving her loads of abuse but as usual she needs a little bit of TLC. All will be explained on the channel very soon.
Adam Locker I’m pretty sure the tunnel welded into the car was meant for a different gearbox so you don’t have the room to remove the Mazda gearbox with engine still in, the mk1 didn’t always have that engine and gearbox
To add to what @nate63892 has said. The engine wasnt fully plumbed in etc and all the front suspension nuts/bolts were still loose so it wasnt much work to take the whole engine out. Also i needed to remove the water rail from the engine to have it modified which is probably impossible with the engine in situ. Also because I welded in the the large gearbox tunnel after the whole car was painted i modified it to follow the shape of the bulkhead to minimise the paintwork needed after the welding (i actually touched up the paint with a roller and then sanded and polished it to blend in) which means the tunnel is not quite as wide where it meets the bulkhead as it otherwise would have been. . . . All this added to the fact that the gearbox is alot heavier and more awkward to remove than a type 9 (especially when im laying on the floor doing it) and i dont want to risk chipping any of the paint underneath the car so ill probably always remove the gearbox like this in the mk1. Even when i had a pinto and a type 9 i would still always drop the lump out of the bay to remove the gbox. :)
Was just wondering you see as I have a 2 mk2s myself one with c20xe and rx8 gear box and I can take the box out of mine without removing the engine that's only reason I asked pal... looking good tho will be a little stunner when finished love the Olympic blue same colour as mine great stuff
