Take the bowl out and repair behind properly it’s not a bad job and you’ll be doing it properly. Brackets need holes drilling and then plug weld them, just make sure metal is spotless clean for the best welds. Always here to help if needed too
Mate take the bowl off it’s only spot welded on could even get a new one get to the rust under it and it will be easier to repair the lip along the front of it and I would drill the new brackets you have and plug weld them on 👍
Bowl off and make it removable so in future you can whip it off and give it a good clean, wax seal etc. I’ve put rivnuts in the shell on mine but could always put self clinching studs in! Only way to repair that area properly!
Remenber these cars in the 1980s as kid.they were everywere with a peco big bore 4 exhaust size of a drain pipe. rs wheels As well lol.I never seen many rs2000s back in the day if im honest/
Drill a 7mm hole in the brackets then mig weld them on and defo remove the bowl and then do your weld repairs then weld it back on buy an 8 mm spot weld drill then drill out the spot welds and the layer of metal on the bowl then use a fleet bladed chisel to prise it off
Best to take the bowl off and rust treat in the bay and the fire wall. Then you know the welding is all done and no water leaks at the end of the build. Do it right the first time. Takes longer but save time in the long run and take photos to show the work So if you ever sell it or for insures value. We can prove it's not a rot box or shed. Nice project
Defo take bowl out. There will be rust behind and best way to repair it all. Do it once and do it right. I noticed the welded hole repair on the dash board also. Poor welding. Car definitely needs going over. Can’t wait to see the progress and no you will do it right 👍
Ooohhhhhhhh man, i must be stoopid,I’d completely forgotten about your new MK2 scort, DOH 😖. That’s a beautiful moth Mitch, and you will set it free if you love 💕 it, lol 😂 Ps……..lovin the enthusiasm, hahaha 🤪
It's so good to see someone tackling a mk2 escort back in the early 80is i was lucky enough to have a couple of rs 2000 which started me off on the Ford rs road. 👍👍
If its already stripped down do the work properly and you won't get the rust back. It's a pain now but you'll have satisfaction knowing you did it right. As for the panels I would drill holes and spot weld them in place, the orignal ones look like they were also spot welded in place so if its good enough for the factory it's good enough for you I assume
Couldn't agree more mate, the bowl will be coming off and all welding completed! Yes looks like brakes were spot welded from factory so will drill some holes 👌🏻
Just drill and plug weld the brackets for the steering. I don't know if it's been done on yours yet but you also need to replace the scuttle grill for the RHD wiper set up and plug the hole in the passenger side scuttle and make a new one drivers side. You need to relocate the wiper motor to the right place. You should also put the re enforcing bracket on the baulked which the pedal bow mounts to if it's still on the the other side just drill out the welds and move it over.
Hi mate, I know about the scuttle & motor its just another thing that I will get round too! I have the reinforcement plate for the pedal box so that will be welded on the RHD. Thank you for the comment! 👍🏻
Good lad get stuck in about it.there always going to be suprizes in these old motors as you well know keep on chasing an scratching best to find out now what’s to do..enjoying as always….🏴👍🔩😎🥶
I have the same on mine buddy re, the heater bubble take it bud do the repair. I reckon 3 or 4 evenings work, haven't done mine yet but that's what I'm thinking, hopefully lol Doing a good job
what do you think to the mk1 ford ka? i think you can make them look nice, but i wouldnt do a engine swop as its not all about speed just need it to look nice, cheers matt
Chances are if there are no holes in the bracket and non visible on the LHD factory bracket, you'll more than likely see welds in the engine bay. I'd imagine the holes will be drilled through the bulkhead and the bracket be welded in from the other side, but don't quote me on that
Hi Mitch, I also have a LHD mk2 Escort that I keep thinking about converting to RHD. If you could pass on any information you get about the swap, that would be great. Cheers

few questionable repairs there!! start as you mean to go on mate get that all cut out and get some new panels in there and make that area solid! those plates just need drilling and plug welding. no need to weld all the way around.
Take the goddamn bowl off, EVERY ESCORT, EVERY TIME. They cause the majority of the rust problems in the front end and most of them had bare metal areas beneath them from factory. Yes, drill holes in your bracket mounts and plug weld them on. Going good. I’ve rust repaired and re-floored over 15 escorts - panel vans, coupes, sedans mk1&2, took the bowl off every time and never regretted it.
Hello mate, you'll be glad to know the bowls off now! I can't cut corners its not in my nature. The underside off my mk2 fiesta is body colour, I rebuilt it all myself & hope the escort will look like that too one day 👌🏻
