  • The blades on my mower were cutting terrible. I purchased some Cub Cadet mulching blades to replace the factory blades. In the video I remove the PTO belt, mower deck, and replace the blades.

Nice video but easier ways to do that. I have the same mower. Found out that if you run mower front on to car ramps you can then turn ramps to the side. Raise deck to highest cutting level will giving you all the room you need to use air impact to take off blade bolts. No need to take deck off. Or take belt off. 10 minute job at most to replace blades or sharpen. Did not know about tool used to hold deck for taking pins out. Thanks for that...

Don’t remove deck just lift front end or drive one side up s ramp and easily remove blades with a cordless impact and 15/16 socket

You can lift the front of that mower and set the deck on that jack stand. That’s enough clearance to change blades out.

I just lift mine and put front tires on 5 gallon buckets probably not the safest way but it's easy

I got the ZT2 54 almost the same thing it takes me 10 minutes to change my blades if I’m sharpening them maybe 30 u made it a half day project easier way to do jack it on the frame not the deck n get to it for taking blades off n putting on use a impact cordless drill most people have no a day 20 seconds to take a blade out 🎯✅

Never seen anyone take the deck off to change the Blades. A electric hoist comes in handy

Put the deck on something like cardboard or rug to drag it in or out, then it won’t scratch the paint off.

I have the newer model ZT1 54" with the "S" Blades (490 110 C194) which are very expensive. I would like to swap out the 3 "S" spindles (618P09236) for the Star Spindle which offers a better selection of Blades at a much lower price. Like the Oregon 3 gator blade. They don't make any for the "S" blades. Any one know of a switch over spindle that will work? Yours in the video look very similar.

Do the blades need to be installed in a specific way as to prevent them from hitting eachother? or does the high-lift prevent that?

@@patricklandis3910 It was a legitimate question. Some more decks are timed where the blades can hit each other if put on wrong (ex: a Cub Cadet LT1042). The belt on those models are toothed. They give a much better cut but there's more to go wrong, especially if/when a belt breaks and your blades start hitting each other.
Had more than one come into our shop where a homeowner put on universal fit blades that did exactly that. As soon as they engaged the deck all hell broke lose.

There are are lots of mowers that the blades have to be offset to each other.

Mine's a Sept 2020 50" ZT2 with the same kind of MTD fabricated deck and same steps for deck removal as this 54" ZT1 and uses the same star pattern blades. I also swapped out the blades it come with for the mulching set. When I go to Cub Cadet's website for the ZT1 & ZT2 50" and 54" it still lists the same blade # as the replacement part.

@@TJK0ng where did you get your blades? Have they worked out well?

    • @TJK0ng
      @TJK0ng 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MrRedHotChiliMan First, to be clear, I have a 50" ZT2 Ultima, not a 54" like in this video, so the blades I'm running won't fit a 54" deck. Actually, if you have a 54" they probably will fit and leave you with a couple strips of uncut grass on every pass. lol. So if you're wanting info on a 54" I can't help you, but if you have a 50" ZT1 or ZT2 Ultima then read on...
I originally ran "MTD 50 Xtreme Mulching Blade Set OE# 742-05052 or 942-05052". I ordered them from Home Depot's website (local store didn't carry) after finding them cheaper there than the exact same set (same name/images/part numbers) as the set available directly from Cub Cadet's site for my model. They are 17.25" long and fit a 50" Cub Cadet ZT1 or ZT2, not the older Cub Cadet RZT or whatever they were called models which use a slightly longer blade.
I have since switched to using Rotary's "506 Copperhead Mulcher Blade 17-1/4" X 6 Point Star MTD" which I order through a landscape supply website only because at about $12 each, or $36+ $15shipping for a set of 3, were a little more than half the cost of MTD's Xtreme set.
TBH the MTD set of blades are the better made of the two, as they have a stamped curve down the length of the blade that no doubt makes it stronger, whereas the Rotary set is a more standard flat steel with the three 'gator teeth' mulching fins, though both look to be the same thickness and cut quality AFAICT so far. FWIW that added strength didn't stop me from bending one when I hit one of those screw-in dog chain anchors I didn't see when helping out a neighbor whose mower was broke down. That's when I went looking and found the cheaper Rotary version that fits.
I'm not seeing a Rotary part # for the set I'm currently using to make them easier to find. Rotary doesn't sell direct to consumers so you'll have to find them through a licensed dealer like most any lawn and garden repair shop, but if you google what I put in quotes for either set of mulching blades you should easily find multiple places you can get them from. Just double check the replacement MTD part #s 742-05052 or 942-05052 and don't confuse them with the MTD PN: 942-05053 blades which are 17.75" (too long for Ultima models) and fit older MTD 50" decks like those on Cub Cadet's older RZT models and such.
