Iron Age Celtic Roundhouse: Building the Timber Frame Foundation | Bushcraft Project (PART 2)

  • We start work building the iron age celtic roundhouse shelter. Merchandise: taofficial.com/ In part 2 of this bushcraft project we dig foundation holes for the vertical posts that we collected in part 1. We bury the posts primitive style and compact them down with a stick and using the clay that we dug up to make the hole. The posts are buried about 15-18 inches into the ground. We burnt the ends of the logs to make them more rot-resistant.
We cooked up a duck stew over the fire in a cast iron dutch oven. Whilst the food was cooking over the fire we sourced some wood for beams. We took the bark off the logs using the drawknife and then notched them using the axe. Originally we had planned to put a hole in each vertical post with the auger, and then peg the beams in. However, we soon realised this would make our roof rafters uneven. So instead we made notches with an axe and angled the logs so that they would sit flush on the posts. In episode 3 we will peg these in with wood pegs and then finish the rest of the foundation frame of the bushcraft shelter.

So here's a question, what happens in a year or so time when the logs start to rot? Y'all put in so much hard work, so do the shelters and building stick around or do you break them down and build something new? If so, dont you have to worry about running out of trees??

Please don't think I'm taking anything away from Mike because what a fantastic channel and his attention to detail, especially with the camera work and filmogrophy is amazing - especially with the content he produces! HOWEVER! There's not enough of you watching these videos without giving Dustin a try at Bushcraft Tools! I actually got into TA Outdoors first and only know Dustin because of the viking series on here but these two are as wonderfully as entertaining as each other so if you want double the entertainment check out Dustin's channel :)

Haaaaa, you always feast well when Dustin is cooking! Will you be digging a bit of a pit on the inside leaving a width of a sleeping area all around the outer perimeter? Might make it a bit more comfortable when sitting around inside. You’d have an elevated sleep platform/storage around the outside. It’s looking great. That would also work as a cold sump and it should be warmer sleeping.

Legitimately remember back when mike was a fairly new teacher filming videos on weekends and between terms. He always looked so tired at the beginning of the trip and much more rested at the end. Other than the beard he looks so much younger now. I’m not saying he didn’t love teaching but you can see how stressful and tiring it is! Long time and life long subscriber.

The intention is to be a go to shelter if/when rain arrives on site during the delivery sessions I run; been using a parachute and or awning/tarps over the last ten years or so! - cheers and good luck, it looks a great setting you have there,

Hiya, just want to say great series, I was on a weeks holiday in Cardiganshire, and on the road between the town of Cardigan and Newport, on the A487 on the right hand side down a small lane there is an Iron Age village called Castell Henllys. It's an actual iron age village and they have rebuilt the round houses where the original ones stood fascinating place, and it has the ability to move a person well it did me. The large round house has a fire pit in the middle and I noticed that the fire is in a square shallow pit, obviously the round house is a lot larger than the one you are building, but I think the fire is in a pit to allow it to be a larger fire. I was lucky as it was November and not very busy and because I'm disabled and use a crutch, one of the staff I think maybe the manager offered to take me up to the village in the sites car what with the village being up on a hill, this very kind lady then walked with me as I walked around and into the 3 roundhouse, which gave me the opportunity to ask questions, one being on how when I was at school (long time ago now) I remembered being taught about the Saxons and round houses, and I remember being told or reading that there would have been a hole left in the roof above the fire to let out the smoke..............wrong, the roundhouse's on this site have no such hole, I knew that what I'd been taught was now thought to be wrong but I'd never really asked why, well as this kind lady told me, wish I could remember her name (I'm terrible at remembering names) the reason is had there been a hole above the fire the chances were they would have set the roof on fire, because of the embers being pulled upwards, well who knew, I in my own way had thought it was because as it's a thatched roof there would be possible little bugs and things and that with no opening the smoke passes through the thatch killing any little nasty thing like fleas 😄😄😄 well it might do that but that wasn't the reason she told me. Now at this point in this comment, or should I say book, it occurred to me I'm probably teaching my nan how to suck eggs, sorry if that's the case, but even if that's not the case I'm sure you will be doing your own research. If you've never been to Castell Henllys I highly recommend it.
Well just to add really enjoying the videos, cant wait for the next guys. 👍👍👍👍👍

You can pack gravel or small rocks around base of posts instead of dirt and it will further reduce heave in the winter. That will also keep moisture off the posts, further reducing rot.

Another trick with post holes is to put a large rock in the bottom of the post hole for the post to stand on.
This will increase the post's "footprint" and allow the post to support more weight .
(It also reduces the risk of the post sinking deeper into ground over time)

Massive massive tip having been part of a team that built a roundhouse, is put the entrance in the position so it faces the sun. The aim is as the sun moves across the sky the light moves along the back wall. After a while you can tell the rough time of day, also you will always have a light source. Permanently during the day. Roundhouses can get very very dark.

Looks good, I seem to remember Robin Wood talking about a fence he made years ago after the Great Storm in the eighties. As I remember it was a three rail sweet chestnut riven from a downed tree. He also charred the posts and it was still standing twenty or thirty years later.

    Hey Mike!
It is coming along quite nicely!!! I can relate to the wet clay issue. I once was trying to shovel out some wet clay and it was like a battle with an underground monster...as I tried to lift my shovel up, my feet would embed even further into the ground!
Yeah, as you made the hole in the post question marks were flying everywhere....If you had been putting the hole to one side of center it might have made sense to me, but only one hole didn't. I thought you might have been intending to have a hole through the cross members and two in each post to match...but then that might actually weaken the post if you had.
You cooked Duck and didn't invite me??? ;-) You know, Dustin is the "Official Master Bushcraft Cook!!!" As great as that looked, however, I don't think anything will ever surpass the "Propeller Lamb" meal!
Keep plugging away and we look so very much forward to the next episode!
