  • Peterson stresses the importance of finding a primary discipline as it's necessary if you really want to succeed in life. Picking something you may or may not want to master is better than not settling for anything at all.

fake name listen again, and question the conclusions previously drawn
You're searching around for happiness, Peterson is talking about building life skill in this video, and "making ourselves useful"
But, if you want happiness, recognize that the nature of your existence is determined by you. If you had control over your mind, would you choose pleasantness or negativity? So the answer to the question I think you should be seeking friend, is "how can I make my mind and my 'self' one"?
      Good luck stranger

Doing this turned out to be horribly depressing. I spent over a week giving it real thought and writing a lot. After struggling to get past all the u realistic stuff I wanted and sort out a realistic ideal life for myself I diligently mapped out how to get there. The problem is that after I completed it I was left utterly unmotivated and depressed. My realistic ideal life was true and clear, and the way to obtain it reasonable and perfectly achievable. But it turns out that even my ideal life is too rubbish to actually motivate me at all. Its not good enough. Its not enough for me.

I just had a realization about schedules :
When you start scheduling your life, you simply don't know what elements your schedule needs, because you don't know yourself well enough.
Start making a schedule that isn't full and then gradually build it up and make it fuller as you get to know yourself.

Alchemy: put your life together- increase discipline, schedule, design a week of productive days and responsibilities every day. That is reorganizing one’s surroundings. Have traditional conservative life other areas beside your creative field. Don’t try to be everything. Have one primary discipline to master. Then you can branch out.

This is really true advice in terms of becoming more conscientious to keep neuroticism at bay. I used to have crippling/impending doom anxiety a lot and once I started working out, keeping my room clean, and going to bed at a semi reasonable hour (not 3-4am) my anxiety has become a lot more manageable and I allow myself to be creative now instead of suppressing it. I think what made me so neurotic was trying to ignore who I was deep down. If you’re creative and you don’t create an outlet it’s soul crushing

This was the first time I felt my "problem" was addressed. I dont firmly believe i anything , if someone has more knowledge or puts enough effort into it I can be convinced into anything , this also means that taking my own decisions especially those that are very important like career stump me because I dont feel the same strong emotions to pursue any particular thing. This has resulted in me just hanging in a limbo of analysis paralysis. He so correctly said that changing my temperament would take very long or in fact might never happen. I'll just follow discipline and do stuff now , its worthless to spend literal years agonizing over stuff that cannot be 100% decided anyway

I am starting to see that thinking about this every day wont change anything and I wont find out what I would like to do, as he said "you need to have a primary dicipline", for most people going to school or to work isnt a primary dicipline just like it isnt for me, so I will dedicate most of my free time on something I would do most likely when I have free time (for my case its making music... could also be writing, drawing, programming or just your work) but just pick something, rather than nothing

So true about consciousnesses helping to reduce neuroticism. After I completed the self-authoring exercise, I realized that one of my main barriers to success was a very high anxiety just before initiating tasks, leading to constant procrastination. I thought this would be one of the things I should work on separately, but realized after a while that simply organizing my life (planning, scheduling, commuting to a plan) reduced the anxiety. I became less neurotic. I did not see that coming!

At 27 years old after a year of listening to Jordan Peterson about “cleaning your room” I realized he doesn’t necessarily mean just clean your room, he also means clean your body (or your roots) because it’s housing your soul
A clean body promotes a clean mind which promotes cleaner thoughts and only then can you formulate a realistic plan for getting your life in order.
After a month of being at the gym I can attest to it finally lifting my depression + seeing the results from the gym is extra.
I absolutely love myself for sticking to this simple yet effective gym routine because I am willingly and voluntarily struggling. I wish I can reach as many people as I can to let them know how life changing this will be if you focus on nothing else but lifting weights to promote more testosterone which in turn has a positive spiral effect in all areas of your life especially your mind and soul.
Thank you for reading this far, I wish you all the best

Such great advice. I followed this advice from his lecture a few yrs ago and have had amazing outcomes. When I got out of business school I worked a job doing general business tasks like placing orders and shipping. But i felt i wasnt really good at any specific subject, esp because business is broad, just like Pan. I wasnt useless, but I needed more direction. I knew a small bit about IT, so i took a leap of faith and started learning to code in my free time. Over a few months of lots of study in my free time, i wasnt sure if I had picked something stupid or not. Why get 2 business degrees just to go change gears to do IT/code? Well, over that year i just kept going bc i had no other direction or guidance, and I made a website with php, python, mysql, etc. from what i had learned. A few months later, a job that paid 50% more than my business job opened up, and they needed business people who could write PHP and other web code. I showed them my site and told them of my business background, and now im still working that job. I work as hard or less than my previous job, bit get paid 50% more. Some luck involved fot sure, but without that luck, id still be well positioned to get paid more, and now ive got new visions of working from home or starting a software company. I now have options i never could have had without taking that blind leap of faith, and Peterson's advice was a significant factor in following through with it.

Figuring out who I am is extremely difficult for me, mostly because I don't really understand 'having an identity'...
I'm a 28yo Belgian male and I've been looking for a life that suits me for over 10 years.
    - at 14, I started as a 'flagguy' at an indoor karting, was the mechanic when I left (just Honda 250cc 4 strokes so nothing too crazy).
-at 18, I took a chemistry class and started working at Fina (same job as Homer Simpson).
-at 21, I started working in a restaurant.
-at 22, i started as a windowcleaner in a company. A few months later, the same company asked me if i would like to start in their heavy duty cleaning team(suicides, murders, familydrama's)
-at 24, I started working as a mechanic for cleaning machines ( the ones that clean supermarkets with the substractor on the back)
-at 25, I bought a small Greek restaurant with my sister
-at 27, i started working in the same restaurant that I worked in at 21. Then someone approached me and asked if I was interested in becoming a drone pilot. So i took the class(3000€!!!!) and just recently finished it. So now suddenly I'm also a drone pilot.
Now at 28, a good friend asked me if I wanted to go with him to Angola, Afrika for work i don't really know yet.
Does anyone recognize this in any way? Can you please leave a comment because I don't know anymore. It feels like I'm floating on the open sea in a stupid broken boat. Sometimes I can see an island in the distance but when I look to the right, I see a twin
turbo V12 motorboat already heading that way... Sigh. Thank you for reading my nonsens

I am similar in a lot of ways. I am a 28yo American male. I've worked 29 different jobs since I was 16. Mostly they're in blue collar environments: warehouses, delivery driving, cleaning, production, landscaping. Some I would last a few hours, few days, few weeks and occasionally a few months or years. I've always known the real world of work would never work for me and yet I go into it again and again to pay the bills and keep the lights on. I think this is a normal part of being a human that thinks or feels different in a lot of ways. I'm a creative but have never put myself to one creative discipline either. I play several instruments, write, take photos, play around with film sometimes. I never stick with anything long enough to finish completely. I identify a lot with this comment and with this video. I don't know if figuring yourself out is so much about what you do externally, but more so internally how you feel about yourself. I generally know who I am and what I'm interested in and yet my attention and actions go all over the place. I would say for you to continue showing up to life. Eventually things will make sense. They are beginning to come clear to me, though the lens of life is still dusty. If you have an opportunity to go to Africa (or if it has already happened), of course do not pass on the opportunity. Maybe for some people it makes more sense to bounce around from different jobs or careers to live a more useful and dynamic life. I would never be happy doing the same things everyday but I would also like to add more meaning and nourishment to my work endeavors instead of jobs that corrode my soul. I know a lot of people feel this way. You may feel like others have their lives figured out because they have a career or accomplishments, but perhaps they are out of order in other areas. You're on an interesting path that is unique to you and yet familiar to many. You'll have a more eclectic and worthwhile life. Whatever you find that is your path, or just like this video says, to just pick something, all the jobs and opportunities you've had along the way will help in some way. Despite hating the conventional working world I still know I've learned a lot in those environments. My pursuit will always be in the creative space. However that looks in life, if I ever get any amount of "success", I will be endlessly grateful since I've lived 10+ years of bouncing around from shitty jobs first. I'm still in the normal workforce as I type this. We shall see how it evolves. Hopefully this was some help to you.

This is spot on. There can be no (creative) chaos without order. All of life is duality (life/death, light/shadow, love/hate). Integration of our duality is key to full on living. I love how he says 'when I was tearing myself apart psychologically'. As a proxy for know myself (my human self), there is no more important, difficult or rewarding task. I finally understand what reflection and 'sitting with myself' means.

Everyone should have 3 sets of skills.
The first set is so you can look after yourself (be able to cook a meal, wash your laundry, budget your income...).
The second set is a sellable set of skills so you can have an income (let it be a lawyer, a mechanic etc).
The 3rd set is the ones that bring you joy. (As in your creative outlet, it could be a good way to bring in a supplementary 8ncome...).

But even despite of that, I have became way way way way way better than I was, just because i am implementing.what Dr. Jordan Peterson teaches (self development).

Married to a highly creative, “jack of all trades” (per se) who admits he’s a disagreeable, neurotic/conscientious person. Life for most of his young adult years was extremely challenging. He became a true disciple of Jesus and as a result, the chemical dependency, harsh treatment of others, and outlook on life changed. He’s open to eating better. I notice he loves to help others even if it kills him, so I don’t hold him back. His devotion to the commands of scripture is what keeps him assured during times of national and personal crisis.

Now that's all fair advice he offers; sticking to your routine and schedule etc. I try to do it this way myself, my problem is not a lack of discipline I believe, rather frequent emotional outbursts due to unresolved traumatic events and repressed feelings, that are so draining, I feel incapable of doing anything productive for the rest of the day (on top of feeling constanly tired anyhow).
I gave up therapists, most of them are useless. I actually started Petersons Self Authoring program, little scared of continuing to the faults and past part, but still want to do so. In fact I wanted to so just today, but had an intense outburst and spent the rest of the day aimlessly and apathetically surfing the web and TH-cam.
I hate when that happens, I really don't want to waste my time, but I'm not sure how to handle this issue. I often just feel sick of always having to force myself to do something; not being able to do things out of intrinsic drive, and of swallowing down that feeling and doing so anyway. Perhaps I'm also setting my goals and expectations too high.

Therapy is only as effective as the patient allows it to be. It requires the kind of work on your part that shouldn't drain you physically but certainly emotionally.
If that isn't an option then go the physical route. There's evidence to suggest that trauma is stored in muscle tissue- so maybe try intense strength training or even yoga/pilates.

"Once you are disciplined, you are like a sharpened sword man."
I would like to expand on this awesome thought but rather than using the metaphor of a sword I will use a knife. There are many different types of knives (serrated, fillet, cleaver, bread, etc.). These can be different kinds of disciplines if you will. Being a jack of all trades only keeps your knives dull. However, once you sharpen one blade, at least that blade, say the paring knife (a short knife used for slicing small fruits and veggies), then you may use it across the knife spectrum. A sharp paring knife will slice better than a dull carving knife.

I am a "creative person" (who also kept his day job) but I believe most of what we call "artistic creativity" is self-therapy or the means to address or process pain or inner conflict. The self-expression is a very healthy and healing outlet, be it painting, composing music or lyrics, writing books, blogging, whatever.... However, many people focus on the monetary rewards, the adulation or admiration of others, or the attainment of fame or celebrity. A fraction of these people luck out and make it, but most don't. If you're an artist, then do your art; don't turn it into a non-stop exercise in angst surrounding success or failure, acceptance or rejection, etc. That's such a tired and old melodramatic narrative. However it's still apparently very appealing; look at the phenomenal success of the latest version of the movie "A Star is Born"! OH THE SUFFERING OF BEING AN ARTISTE! People are so used to others saying they are "artists" that there is a certain cynicism about it. Just have the discipline to DO IT if you are burning with passion and motivated to do so (and good luck to you! In our world you're up not only against all the other legitimate and disciplined artists in your same field of endeavor, but thousands of people who don't even bother to learn the basics of their creative craft before slapping whatever they created online or elsewhere.). If you get discouraged. Did you know The Beatles were signed to a label that dropped them before "I Want to Hold Your Hand"? Did you know Motown released at least 5 or 6 Supremes singles that bombed before they hit the jackpot with their string of Holland-Dozier-Holland #1 hits? So skip the drama and self-flagellation, learn as much about your craft as possible, and if you're feeling it just do it
