@@diogofarias1822 because the thoughts that are usually subconscious come to the forefront. you are a little more separate from the ego that normally where it just blends in and gives you a nudge. It is also easier to influence their effect on you since they are more noticeable and put together your patterns and tendancys. Or you can just listen to music and eat stuff. Depends on your focus in a lot of ways.

One of Jordan's best - and true. It reminds me of the 1994 film comedy The Mask, where ironically the beta male protagonist discovers that when he wears an ancient mask it frees his deeper instincts, and he eventually integrates his Persona and Shadow to a degree.
The whole point is to stop wearing masks. In addition, the thought of all those slighty sychophantic Peterson neophytes recoiling at all this talk of embracing one's feminine side, does make me chuckle.

What the fuck the problem started when you integrate a persona.
The reason why people struggle in this world is because thier hands are tied by law and they are in a game of life where the rules are made up but are not taught.
The persona is the mask the thing that covers the shadow.
Especially in men.
You deny your feminine side.
The mask is portraying persona when the typically beta as you put it puts it on he becomes a ridiculous creature.
That's what it's telling everyone the people who are like that are fake and inside are weak that's why they need the mask.

Your conditioned by your culture to compete against each other to give rise to your biochemistry that you become addicted to so carry on the shadow is you the point you view it from thats false persona and an actor that you believe you are.

Persona is not to be rejected either. It’s a natural phenomena. Knowledge of it, and then opening to the deeper dimensions of the psyche, is fundamental to our integration. Nobody goes out into the world without their mask. This too is also as it should be.

Shadow parts of the self that the persona rejects. Observe one s own fantasies of resentment or revenge. Notice if you are oppressed and your moral obligation is to speak up about it. Honesty with yourself is like good therapy. The journey to enlightenment begins with recognition of one’s capacity for evil. If those aggressive parts are integrated into one’s character one can be dangerous and that actually is good. You can develop grace. Speaking truth assertively is necessary.

@@dreamdiction I feel like it's also having power and channeling that power to and power with other people instead of the current paradigm we still live in of using your "power over people".
What I have found interesting about the shadow is that it is not the act of standing up for yourself that empowers you. It's the ability to stand with others in a way that fulfils you which matters. Like Jordan says, if you narrow down the resentment, that is when the shadow provides positive solutions. It is when you don't know what bothers you which the shadow creates selfish power hungry fantasies. Integration is the key to navigate through the darkness of your mind.
Montenegrins have a word 'čojstvo' [choystvo], which no one i knew in former Yugoslavia long time ago could quite explain to me. I finally heard the explanation which goes (more or less) like this: heroism is protecting yourself from your enemies - čojstvo is protecting others [your enemies] from yourself. As a society we really need to work on 'čojstvo'.

I am currently in psychodynamic therapy (through a specialist service for people with personality disorders - myself having borderline PD). I’m in the process of shedding my persona and accepting/incorporating my shadow into my character. All my life I have been refusing to accept that I am capable of the negative - to the point that I completely separated any negative thought/feeling/action to that of a separate entity which had a name and a voice (a delusion and auditory hallucination). I believed I was incapable of being ‘bad’, now I see that it was juvenile and naive. I am getting to know myself for the first time. I’m unlocking my potential. It feels like I’m waking up for the first time. I feel more powerful as the weeks go by. This video has helped me clarify my therapy experience and given me a greater understanding of my transformation. Thank you Jordan Peterson.

Integration of your shadow side is one of the most important things you can do, but also the most difficult and time consuming. "The meek shall inherit the earth" is super powerful - in that meek meaning that the man is dangerous but collected. A perfect example of perfect shadow integration.

This was excellent advice that resonates with me very well. The reason I have intrusive thoughts of hurting people is because I am capable of this. I call this bad, but this does not change my problematic psychology. I choose to be careful when learning about his politics, but he has a lot of excellent wisdom from various sources when it comes to psychology.
I am capable of harming others and I don't have to fear myself. I am willing not to use my weapons. I derived immediate practical benefit from this. Thank you Peterson. Beautiful.
Daylight casts shadows while the night reveals starlight. We are whole and compassionate when we can see both in ourselves. My shadow work helped me keep the warrior at bay.
I've always found the best way to integrate the shadow as a male is to have ambition. True ambition eliminates fear and is a extremely productive force.

was feeling hopeless for days... dong meditation everyday helps but by dong shadow work there was tears then it went the freedom for facing shadow was one of the best things to have in life. i hope some day that our schools would teach this so that we can have more people with more pace of mind.
Shadow work is the hardest work I've ever done. And the most rewarding. It throws you in the center of the drama, and goes out from there. Good video, Dr. Jordon. Thank you for what you do. Sometimes it's just the ways the old we've forgotten.
I believe a big part of my shadow is that I am weak in some sense to stand up for myself. I have never really been bullied at school or anything, I've just been a very agreeable person and rarely say no. That's where anger appears, when I feel I naturally say yes to something I don't want to do, (although I attempt to convince myself that it doesn't bother me) but do anyway. Thoughts I didn't think I could think of appear, and strange dark fantasies come and go. To which JP does say, it can feel dangerous and scary that the human mind is capable of such things. During times of self reflection I realize that this is not who I want to be, I have an image in my head of the person I want to become.

Well I am an INFP T HSP empath had a severe traumatic childhood struggling with mental health.I am 30 years old and guess what at 13 years of age I discovered who I have really want to be a Polymath but due to pressure and of course other out my hand circumstances I became from rebellious to agreeable which resulted in me being split into two.Fast forward several years I learn about mbti,learn about my dreams and using Ne I start rebelling again this time integrating my Shadow and as far as agreeable is concerned I have become blunt with politeness that is if certain people are manipulating me I see through their game and either I walk away or Say no.Also if I agree to certain tasks and feel uneasy or have bad thoughts I picture myself out of my body and see what is causing this or am I overeacting or is somebody influencing me.In order no your true I have discovered as an INFP stay away from toxic, emotional,yes man buffoons and also manipulative people your true self will appear.Also we INFPs love to be knowledgeable.The more you read,research and use it in your LIfe the more you will become straight forward.
I am also infp. I do believe when I was growing up I was very agreeable. For me I had a harder time growing up, because I didn't have much of a grasp at social skills. The agreeableness made it easy for people to want to be around me. And a couple of shared traits were normally the only reason I was around somebody. Also, had really bad anger issues.
When creative/transformative expression is stifled, it manifests its shadow, which is destructiveness.

This becomes significantly harder if you’ve had a traumatic up bringing. How can one accept the part of themselves that has fantasies of revenge against there own family? Absolutely love listening to this guy, feels as if I get stronger bit by bit but sometimes it’s hard to integrate what he says
Ive recently been really accepting my fantasies towards my family and my ex wife - those the closest to me. I’ve been writing a lot of Fuck You notes to them, on my kitchen table.
You desire justice. Now take those fantasies of revenge and understand your feelings of satisfaction from them. Then, find a legal, moral way of satisfying those feelings.
Btw, having those fantasies seem normal as other people can have them too.
I know those fantasies seems unacceptable (i mean it's your family), but the real problem is your attitude towards them: that's what transform them in your shadow, yourself trying to block a part of yourself. Now, these fantasies are a part of your deep self, which is trying to communicate with you through out this images. That's ok, it's how our unconscious communicate, through out symbols, inner images. This doesn't mean you have to transform that into action, but simply let it flow through your mind, acknowledge them and than find a way to express the build up emotional energy. If you accept them, and understand that it's just some deep ancient energy inside yourself that is communicating with you, you will be able to integrate your shadow. Just accept them, because it means accepting yourself. Take care

For me, hearing that for the first time was almost like a weight got lifted off my shoulders. I had always noticed that distinction, but couldn't effectively communicate it. Basically, anytime you find out you aren't the only one who notices something, it's comforting.
TL;DR: I am Nietzsche. I am comforted.
How do you get back your claws
@@lukamilicevic712 technically, you never actually lose them. The quote is pointing out the difference between someone who is a good person because "that's all they know how to be" vs. being a good person by choice because they have seen both sides of the coin, good and bad.
It's basically a reminder that we ALL have claws (the capability to be bad people), and that true mental fortitude comes from those who know the feeling of using their claws, yet make the conscious decision not to.
-You can also interpret this as "a strong man who has never faced adversity, might not actually be as strong as he thinks." Essentially the same thing, just more broad.

Your anger towards others, brash actions in self-interest, and general contempt towards different aspects of life all constitute your "shadow". It starts with understanding your inner desires and intentions and how they impact those around you
I've often felt that perhaps a way too try to advance through life is by balancing off opposing traits, like trying to be honest without being rude, kind without being a pushover, dependable without being overbearing, etc.
I suggest an Ayahuasca Ceremony, integrating your core in connection to the whole, I'm certain it'd help with all trauma and pain

It is hard to overstate Petersons value in today society. This man saved my life and so many others that he became the Top Lobster in my book.
a good clip. I think Peterson is great for raising awareness of Jung's wisdom. I recently read archetypal dimensions of the psyche which is quite a heavy read but goes more into the integration of the shadow. Would be interested to hear Peterson's thoughts on integration of the anima / animus which Jung thought was the greatest challenge.

@@mrsirman2177 Maybe what he meant is to be acquainted with the animus or anima. Because before you can embrace your animus or anima you need to first accept your shadow. Embracing your animus and anima is difficult and according to Jung you cannot embrace your animus or anima unless you accept your shadow which is the first test of courage.

I am certainly glad that as societies we are finally open to get to know concepts like the shadow. We need to get out of the self-righteous mode that does not allow us to observe those aspects that need further development. For example, I am Mexican, upper class Mexican. We have gigantic Walls around our houses in Mexico City and other cities, with barbed wire and electricity so criminals do not dare to do their shananings. So what aspect of my shadow I am embracing, that I am racist and classist. I cannot understand how the rest of Mexico feels so offended that Trump is building a wall, when we ourselves are racist against fellow mexicans. No wonder the constellation of the collective has created a Wall, because we All have Walls in mexico, cultural walls, ethnic walls, economical walls. I am well aware that I have lots to develop in that department, but I would not be able to do inquiry into what is wrong with me, and my racists and classist tendencies if i was in denial, that is if i had a persona, that I am a nice and all accepting Mexican. That is the persona that my fellow upper class mexicans use, but our shadow is that we call ourselves mexicans if and only if we are with people of the same socio-economical class. this is just one example, of how deluded we all are, not only in mexico but pretty much everywhere. As Eckart Tolle has mentioned in his books, we are all insane, it is just that we have not become ware that we are insane.

Slip into that suit of clothes for awhile! I am a born bred U.S. Citizen. I came to an awareness back in the 90eez. There is no country called "America". Face this reality individually and collectively, and the entire narrative of history changes and the lies rapidly are illuminated and exposed. Speech has been muddled and the discussion polluted, by the complete mis use of the words "America" and
"American" . I am a U.S. Citizen, and only because I live in a region of the "Americas", does that fact therefore make me an "American".

My understanding about the shadow is the shadow is an archetype about things that we don’t want to admit to ourselves like for instance our feminine and masculine of our personality. The persona (mask) is the "social me". The way we show ourselves in society when we are dealing with other people.
We all wear one to an extent cause even if u are completely honest in social groups being brutally honest to the point of angering others isn't exactly the way to go. U need to find a good way to be honest yet respectful.

The best practical approach to integrating your shadow is developing radical honesty. Yes, it has been working for me.
Love the piece. I often see choosing the military after Vietnam is like a Rite of Passage. That people choose on purpose it comes with its own escape Claus.. which turns into PTSD. You can say you took the job but you will have to face why eventually. Forgiveness seems to be a good way to integrate that as an experience. If the Persona is the personality and the soul is infinite then we are definitely teaching ourselves two different Rites of Passage is what we prefer and sometimes it takes many lifetimes to understand soft and Squishy densities of life are as okay as the other opposite. But we do seem to cover the gamut through a lifetime. Midlife crisis turns into radical honesty and without taking any of it personal it's just a purging acceptance of who we are today. Integrated

Though I've always been drawn to the idea of shadow self, recent shifts of honesty, largely due to examining my resentments, have made me ever-so-aware of my need to integrate and understand these parts of me. Thanks Jordan thinking thinking thinking and bringing that thinking to a place of peaceful commitment to having a good life worthy enough to contribute to others and holding personal accountability for how it goes and willing to share some of that accountability with others when it can be given as a gift.

@@Fanny.Cradock There is a lot of controversy around Peterson--I don't need to tell you that. He says many things that can be construed as misogynist or racist, or, to put it the other way, as patriarchal and white supremacist. I am not damning every word he says. I am saying that despite his Jungian credentials he seems naive about his own 'shadow', as it is called in the field. No, I can't give you any examples now--it has been some time since I've read or listened to JP and i don't have the examples to hand. But if you are curious about people's reservations, you can find plenty of articulate criticism out there I am sure. Not all the critics are over-the-top PC brigadiers. I don't believe I am, or at least I get myself into trouble with the PC brigade a lot.... Anyway--I'm watching this video again: persona in Jung isn't just being nice. JP is wrong here. Machos just have a different persona to the beta males. Still some good stuff here.

You survived so you could be yourself and seek happiness. You are no less human for having received a second chance, and have every right to be sad, happy, lazy, get a job you are passionate about, and so on. Think about this: the people you got the organs from. It was their turn to go. Your turn to go will also come one day. They would have left anyway. They did not die so you could get the organs. They died because it was, sadly, their turn to go. Go on and live like any normal person. Good days, bad days. Just regular stuff.

Mason morgan jeez mason don’t you know that man wasn’t Jesus - he didn’t die to save you. He was dying and in passing he gave you a gift. In so doing he probably redeemed himself. So in fact you did him a favour by being there for him - you gave him redemption, the greatest gift of all.
The Hopi tribe (and others) believe that if you save a mans life you are responsible for him thereafter. Not the other way round.
The universe is a strange place Mason. You need to open your mind to see how it really works. You have the time to do it, just remember you gave your donor the greatest gift of all- when you were an infant for god’s sake. There may be even more greatness in you.

I'm gonna incorporate my shadow and say that quite a few people in the comments missed the point. Only dangerous people can be good people. Weak, beta people aren't good people because they don't or can't or won't do what is necessary. Meek doesn't mean innocent. JP wasn't talking about animals or plants and neither was the author who wrote that scripture. Strong's concordance defines the Greek word "praeis" roughly as "demonstrating power without undue harshness." Just like Dr. Peterson says: listen to people you don't agree with; they might know something you don't. Happy hunting.

That means that you needed to hear it. our societies, mainly through primary education, are cultivating a generation of beta males through indoctrination and conformity. They do this because betas are more obedient and easier to control... until some of them manifest their shadows into antisocial monsters.

I think you had better find a good psychoanalyst who knows reichan, jungian psychology well. Now I rarely act like a child and my family also have started to see me as a mature person.
