Yeah, those who frequent military circles will often tell you that "military-grade" usually means "just ever so slightly above bare minimum, to clear approval for mass production."
Just saying for those who might not know. Military grade DOES NOT mean it's good. It means it ticked all the boxes of testing and was the cheapest option to do so. The epitome of "good enough".
Exactly. Companies try to make "military grade" sound like a huge deal when in reality military grade means "just good and cheap enough to function" as that's all the military needs.
Speaking as someone who has worked with the military, "military grade" just means "its the cheapest thing that requisitions was willing to buy". I'd love to see you look at some of the nuggets I've seen
Probably they mean that they worked as an independent contractor on some project or in a non-military government role that still had to work with the military for some tasks. Or maybe it's just a bit of a mistype.
As someone who has applied hundreds of those Zagg screen protectors, I cannot tell you the level of suffering I felt seeing him slap the thing down onto an absolutely filthy screen. They're not as clear as the glass protectors but they were genuinely great, a huge step above the normal film protectors. They protected against fingerprints and actually kept the screen looking pristine! Actually, artists who draw on ipads nowadays will sometimes use a variation of that protector that makes the screen have a bit of resistance, called a "paper-feel" protector. They're fascinating!
Once I saw Minecraft Lite I knew that iPad was truly "vintage", I don't think most Minecraft players even remember Minecraft Lite anymore, I still remember when it was taken off the app store
I still have it on a really old phone. I'm never wiping that phone cause it's full of old apps that no longer exist anymore. It's like a relic of the past.
I worked in the mobile dept at Bestbuy and we installed these, ALL THE TIME! They actually do a fairly good job of protecting the device, cause its not plastic. Its more of a malleable rubber and can really take a solid hit before damaging the screen at all. We would always wash hands, clean the screen, spray the screen, pull the screen protector, spray it, and then lay it down and squegee. I agree it made the devices screen feel like crap, but if you wanted to protect it from damage, you couldnt really get anything better than the Zagg. Also as a note, it stinks cause its not water lol. Its some weird chemical solution that cures under the screen protector and harden it up a bit.
Ok but as a tech store worker, Zagg aged well. They have a lifetime warranty and are probably the nicest packaged screen protectors with applicator guides. Love em, but WOW that old box is obnoxious
Had one for my now 10yo 5s. It kept my phone screen in tip top shape through high school, with all the abuse that would entail for a teenager's first smartphone (marching band, teenage meltdowns that ended with a thrown phone, drops on laminate, etc) and the protector paired with a good case turned a normally fragile iphone into a decent little brick. Hilariously enough, the 8 i ended up upgrading to for college had a glass screen protector and it had a LOT of cracks by the time i switched to my current 3rd gen SE, despite significantly less abuse and a better case. Those rubber Zagg protectors can take one hell of a beating and i doubt my 5s would be in as good of shape if i didn't put it on when i was 14 lol
Back in the early days, these were actually very premium screen protectors. Once glass screen protectors become mainstream. Of course nobody brought them.
The reason the Invisible shield sold so much is there were kiosks in malls. They offered lifetime replacements. I used the Invisible shield for several iPhones, it protected them from many drops.
From the depths of NA, happy new year. Loved seeing you and Linus making some videos together(especially since you are more than just hands and voice on LTT)... though maybe test your friendship and see if Linus would come to Kangarooland, or atleast which "Media Group" he would send to you in the land of deadly spiders.
Agreed 110% man. DankPods was my discovery back in 2022, and his channel makes everything humorous, including lost relics of two decades old mp3 history. Also, happy New year brother and fellow DankPods aficionado. Imagine if DankPods did a review of CRT displays. Man, those Trinitron tube televisions would be great to watch 1990s anime on, such as YuYu Hakusho. Gonna try that anime out this year, as a friend recommended me Hunter X Hunter two years ago, the first anime that made me realize not all anime is trash. YuYu is made by the same guy as HxH.
I really liked my invisible shield screen protector on my older iPhones, it had a thick, weird feel BUT it protected the screen really well and some of the lesser scratches would actually “heal” over a small amount of time - a huge step above anything else at the time
Zagg screen protectors are actually awesome. Used one on every phone I had up until my Flip (for obvious reasons) and they work great. They even let you replace them for free if you pay shipping.
It’s a shame you didn’t try to damage the invisishield - I totally agree about the cheap plastic/rubber feel, that’s why I ended up having a used one to play with, they’re crazy tough
This Zagg screen protector reminds me of something 3MK sold, a thick silicone-like screen protector that is somewhat self-healing, and can theoretically be taken off and washed. I had that two phones ago because my phone had a stupid curved screen edge, and glass screen protectors would come in two varieties - one that goes only on the flat part and looks terrible, and one with wrong curve radius, so it always cracks along it. The only thing wrong with the thick and soft screen protector was that it would yellow over time. It was in a way better than glass, because it would absorb impacts better.
When i worked in a hardware store I would go through glass screen proctors like candy. Mostly due to concrete. The bags would leak, get some of it into my pocket, and then pull out my phone to check the time just to realize that a small piece of gravel hit it just right and shattered the whole thing. Swapping back to plastic bits worked better in that environment.
like others have said those zagg screen protectors were the shit back in the day and still are pretty great compared to a plain Jane screen protector. they'll stop more than you think and even if the screen protectors gets sliced there's a good chance the screen underneath is fine. before gorilla glass became good and glass screen protectors took off this was it especially considering they offered full body protection not just screen protectors for certain devices.
I laugh every time whenever the AAs (or AAAs) are yelled out... however the invisibleSHIELD's box is a different level of unhinged (as of writing, everyone is asleep in the house and I'm composing myself so not to *cackle* at 2:53)
I remember using zagg's invisible shield for my Sony Ericsson Satio way back in the day. It lasted really long and I was quite happy with it! But it did start collecting dirt along the edges over time, which is a boo.
I have one of these Zagg things on my old ipod touch since purchase. The aluminum is still nice and shiny, its basically like new lol, its great! These things were fantastic back in the day before you could really get glass protectors and if you didn't want a bulky case. Gave a little grip, self healing, didn't seem to yellow like the alternative brands. Tricky to install but worth it IMO
I don't know about back then, but ZAGG protectors nowadays are actually really good. They even give you a lifetime warranty. As long as it was installed correctly when it was purchased, you could replace it at no cost to you.
Been following you for a year or so now I’m just realizing you’re just a geeky hoarder; who also happens to be super cool and musician; which is also a summary of my niche kinks.
WELCOME TO USE IT Also, one of the things I miss most about my S5 was always having a remote, so if my remote stopped working or I couldn't find it, it wasn't a huge deal. I used to service TVs, and one of the best parts about having that phone is that I didn't need to search through a massive box of different remotes to try to find the ones that are supposed to fit the TV just to test.
I love the 5 dollar 3gs that I picked up perfect Ipod with a horrible shifty plastic red case that I won't remove till it ages like fine box wine. Always a good video and very entertaining and informative.
I love this episode, it was actually an inspiration for me to pick up an old iPad 2, jailbreak it, downgrade back to iOS 6, and now i've got my little iOS guy to play all the stuff I can't on Android.
The only real benefit of using the old 'thick' Zagg screen protectors for me, personally, was that era had EVERYTHING slick, including the tops of tables/desks/car dashes/etc, and the back of every Gadget ever. Putting a Zagg on a device meant I could lay it FACE DOWN and it wouldn't slip and slide around everywhere or fall off random things and shatter/explode.
Can InvisibleShield protect mommy and me from daddy when he's been drinking? I didn't think so, so you can't protect against EVERYTHING. Yeah, I'd like to get a refund then.
Hilarious, we sell Zagg InvisibleSHIELD screen protectors at my store. But they're actually glass now. However, we do have another brand called ProtectionPro that is almost identical to this idea, plastic sheets we cut out with a machine and then apply using gel+squeegee. Actually works quite well especially for curved screen phones. Glass protectors for those are completely useless garbage that falls off at the first sign of damage. Then your screen breaks anyway.
I always thought the best way to do it is to give the phone a plastic screen and a factory applied glass screen protector, that way if you crack the glass you might get a little scratch on the plastic but its very unlikely to damage the screen
Had an old Zagg screen protector of this rubber variety on my first smartphone, a gold 5s. If you let the screen get dirty the rubber would feel kind of sticky, but just a few drops of 90% IPA and a good wipe would clean it right up. It might have made my phone look cheap, but it kept my screen intact through high school marching band with all the abuse that would entail before i finally upgraded to an 8 with a glass screen protector (which is quite cracked now and i've since upgraded to a third gen SE) Not in marching band any more, but it kept my phone screen intact through a few teenage tantrums, drops on concrete and laminate, etc. So hey, it did its job pretty well. Still have that old 5s, i'd like to replace the battery in it sometime.
Man I remember getting my phone covered with the entire Zagg thing back in the day instead of a case. The one time my parents ever bought a thing from a mall kiosk.
oh man, I remember when screen protectors were "cut to size". They were literally just a plastic sheet you put on the screen. A secondary plastic layer for scratch protection, and did nothing for impacts. That was until they started to. I remember when the commercials with people dropping handfuls of nuts and bolts onto the screens came about. Ah, good times. I *HATED* these vinyl protectors. If your nail clipped it, you have a permanent mark on the "protector" now. They were also really grippy, which makes sliding in games annoying.
Zagg protectors worked great. Kept my screen from breaking on my phones multiple times. It would break and take the impact before the actual screen broke. Touch screen worked fine on phones at least when I was using them. Use a screen protector now and would use Zagg if there wasn’t some competition selling the same quality cheaper at the moment. The ones for the phone aren’t the plastic ones tho. *they also honor the lifetime warranty.
Oh man, those Zagg gel film protectors, we still offer them at work, we even gave lifetime warranty for application issues. They cost twice as much as the other ones we have, and they have their own cutting machine for them. Then, out of the blue, Zagg stopped offering the warranty (we would send the faulty ones back but not anymore) so we replace them with our own. I mean it's all marketing in the end. I haven't seen any difference between Zagg and the Chinesium ones in terms of feel. BUT: the Zagg material is definitely a step above everything else. That material doesn't tear, unlike the chinese ones. It is actually VERY stretchy.
I’m watching this through a Zagg screen protector with an air bubble I can’t get rid of in the bottom corner. Had to peel it off partially and fish out a dog hair after the first application
Hey man, I don't like LTT, personally I think he needs to quit for a year and get a grip but seeing you and him working together makes me rethink that. Hope you and him are doing well
I am one of the few who opt to use plastic screen protectors instead of glass. The shatter resistance of plastic protectors is seriously underrated. My OnePlus 5 survived 5 crazy drops that should have obliterated the screen (i ran it without a case), which was a much better experience than the one time my iPhone 6 took a 1 meter drop onto concrete and the screen protector and screen underneath both shattered. I mean obviously plastic screen protectors aren't great otherwise- you have to replace them every few months to get rid of scratch marks, for one. But for me the tradeoffs are worth it; I use my devices for years, and my 7 year old phone is in better condition than most friends' and family members' phones I see.
I remember when I got a tempered glass screen protector for my Galaxy S4 off eBay for like $5 how impressed everyone else was with their $40 plastic screen protectors. Felt like the future cause you weren't ruining a 5" AMOLED display with plastic film.
My new Oppo Reno 10 has a built in IR blaster, even. And the stock app for it was able to match up with my TV and heat pump just fine. Still a handy feature in current year.
I remember back in the day before optimization when there were separate apps for iPhone and iPad, since a single application being cross-compatible with a small and large screen was simply impossible in 2010.
I heard you came out to Vancouver, BC and got to meet Linus Media Group. I had the luxury of being able stop into their office to use the can after picking up from the office of the abatenent company I worked for.
I remember standing in school with LG nugget while someone ran into my hand so i dropped the phone. It has the screen protector on it (quite thick plastic one) and protector got a crack and there were tiny crack on a side. I agree that having bare screen is nice and stuff, but screen repair nowadays is a nightmare, so in most cases nobody cares. I dropped my Redmi K20 with no protector. I bought another phone but then i wanted to actually repair the old one and there were no genuine screens. So i just bought cheapest IPS i could get for like 20$. It has huge bezels compared to original and also quite dim but it's perfectly usable, my mom daily drives it now.
Optus use those invisible shield screen protectors! You can buy a lifetime replacement thing that they will replace the screen protector whenever it bubbles or comes off. I have a Samsung with the curved screen so I’m always going back about once every month lol
Yeah, I uh, I actually really love the Invisi-sheild/Zagg protectors. I went out of my way to get them for my phones and even have one on my Nintendo Switch! Properly applied they're crystal clear and just a little grippy, and stop it from slipping out of your sweaty hands. My phones taken some serious drops onto rough concrete (Hole in my pocket while biking, oops), landed screen down, and been fine. Prefer them to the glass protectors.
Anyone who was in the military will tell you "military -grade" is not the ringing endorsement that civilian companies think it is.
Shit, I just worked for the VA and I can still vouch. Everything is held together by a ribbon and a prayer.
Yeah, those who frequent military circles will often tell you that "military-grade" usually means "just ever so slightly above bare minimum, to clear approval for mass production."

The v22 osprey is military grade and is unreliable so that says something about military grade
military grade usally means that we saw somebody in an army outfit use it

I mean it's all marketing in the end. I haven't seen any difference between Zagg and the Chinesium ones in terms of feel. BUT: the Zagg material is definitely a step above everything else. That material doesn't tear, unlike the chinese ones. It is actually VERY stretchy.
I’m watching this through a Zagg screen protector with an air bubble I can’t get rid of in the bottom corner. Had to peel it off partially and fish out a dog hair after the first application
this video brought back memories I completely forgot I had
Hey man, I don't like LTT, personally I think he needs to quit for a year and get a grip but seeing you and him working together makes me rethink that.
Hope you and him are doing well
When I was in the army, I put Zagg on everything. Never had a problem and they held up well, even in the desert.
the idea of forgetting to bring my ipad only to be given an ancient artifact horrifies me
I am one of the few who opt to use plastic screen protectors instead of glass.
But for me the tradeoffs are worth it; I use my devices for years, and my 7 year old phone is in better condition than most friends' and family members' phones I see.
the boring case was the funniest thing. you can tell no one in the company is excited about what theyre doing
Still a handy feature in current year.
oh my god you have most wanted on your ipad you are a legend
HE STILL HAS MCPE LITE ON THAT IPAD, I HAD ONE OF THOSE SHINY IPHONE CASES ON MY FIRST IPHONE!!!!!!
"a genuine apple third party store"
As someone who’s worked closely with Zagg for years I fucking loved this
I remember back in the day before optimization when there were separate apps for iPhone and iPad, since a single application being cross-compatible with a small and large screen was simply impossible in 2010.
8:36 "Designed in somewhere by someone"??? Amazing
Nice way to start the year, tks man.
The apple remote accessory is in such a large package for antitheft purposes. The large packaging makes it harder to hide in your shirt.
The case constuction was so easy that they didn't even need all the letters for it.
These videos are the best present you could wish for on like, New Year's Day at 5PM AEST.
“We protect EVERYTHING” 🤣
I heard you came out to Vancouver, BC and got to meet Linus Media Group. I had the luxury of being able stop into their office to use the can after picking up from the office of the abatenent company I worked for.
Happy new years to my friend down under🎉🎉
dude how nice to have a new years hangover watching dankpods
This is a classic-vibe episode if I've ever seen it❤❤❤
I remember watching a Dankpods episode with an ad for Zagg protectors 😅
"invisibleSHEILD" got me good
Hey! I installed tons of these right before glass screen protectors came out!
Tpu screen protectors are great when applied properly
Happy new year!! Good way to start the new year
