    Thank you Paul for this marvelous demonstration of the Hauptwerk Sampleset from the monumental Cavaillé-Coll Organ in Nancy: the variety of reed stops and colours is beyond comparison with any other instrument, moreover this instrument features the first 32-foot Contre-Bombarde ever built in all of France ... This organ and Cavaillé-Coll´s final and ultimate masterpiece in the St. Ouen church at Rouen remain for me the most splendid witnesses of the incomparable art and craftmanship of their great Master!

    It’s ALWAYS a treat to hear historic pipe organs like this, a GREATER treat to hear it when you give a tour of the stops - time also stop to get spellbound to your demo.
    I do hope that one day the world renowned Las Piñas Bamboo Organ in the Philippines will be Hauptwerk sampled and be demonstrated by you, it’s about time that historic organ be heard in the limelight….

    Every time Piotr G. releases a new sample-set, he out-does himself. I have been waiting for this organ to become available. I have heard a lot of verbal background 'noise' on other sites regarding the real acoustic of Nancy Cathedral being extremely bright and very lively, but after hearing your demonstration today I think that Piotr did an outstanding job capturing it all without compromise! I have never been to Europe so I guess that I will have to wait until I cross the pond someday. I must say that I have always found that French leaning instruments have only what you need in the pedal division. I think that American Instruments have gotten out-of-hand mainly because of the horrible acoustic setting found in most spaces. The builders have 'beefed' up the pedal division by borrowing everything to erase the fact that there is no ambience (Not in every place - but most. The instrument I played in College was a new 3/manual-pedal American build with mixed heritage, but mostly German Neo Baroque with a few French Reeds - but, the pedal department had only Principals, Reeds 32'-4' and a lonely beautiful Hohlflöte 2'. It worked brilliantly because of the acoustics, which were amazing for a new building - besides you could always couple down lighter stops from the manuals.

      @@PaulFey Yes I agree. I don't know about St John Divine because the cathedral has an acoustic twice the size of Nancy Cathedral and the State Trumpet which has a 50 wind pressure might crash everyone computers.

      @@StoreeDenson St.John the Divine would be absolutely superb, as I’ve yet to find single good Skinner set (There are some out there but none of them even begin to approach the quality of European sets) Although I think you’re right about computer requirements being too demanding to be practical. I’m planning on sampling some American instruments myself and will hopefully be able to provide some good decent size stereo sets in due time. 😊

    Bravo, Paul! An excellent demo!
    This may get negative comments, but I've been to this cathedral on an organ tour, and I found it to be very bright, and overly-loud in the room.
    It could be that I was tiring of French organs at the time, as we heard so many!
    But at a church service, this wasn't a problem, so maybe it was a matter of the registrations used during our visit.
    Of course, this is not a problem when using a sample set such as this, as a comfortable volume can be easily set.
    It seems as if I can appreciate the individual voices (beautiful!), and choruses (thrilling!), better in this virtual form than I could in person.

    • @PaulFey
      @PaulFey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh that‘s a really interesting insight! Would you say that the set sounds near to the original instrument? Is the reverb in the cathedral close to this reverb in the set? 😀

    • @EElgar1857
      @EElgar1857 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PaulFey The experience of being there in person is so different from sitting at the computer, with headphones on, I'm not completely sure!
      My headphones are quite good (Shure 840s) but not expensive, and I no doubt listen at a lower level than "live". (Their bass is excellent; that's why I like them!)
      The individual stops are very accurately sampled, I think, but the overall "tutti" seems warmer than I remember - at least in ff and fff.
      I think the reverberation is well-captured in the set. That 32' Bombarde is really something!

      Your criticism of the Nancy organ is legitimate- it suffered some rather unfortunate neoclassical modifications in the 60s (many of which were purely due to the agenda of the time) where softer stops such as the 16-8-4 string chorus on the GO were replaced with more upperwork, which ended up not blending very well and being made of poor materials. Harmonic flutes were even cut down to normal length as was one of the bizarre practices at the time! Thankfully, these are being completely reversed to return this beautiful Cavaillé-Coll to its former glory in the current restoration- in 2024 we will be able to hear its majestic sounds once again.
