  • In this video I demonstrate the Cavaillé-Coll organ in the abbey of Saint-Étienneas, Caen (France) as recorded by Sonus Paradisi. I take you through every stop individually and bring the sounds together in short interludes. At the end of the video I play some Messiaen to demonstrate the 'full' sound this organ can make.

    ► The volume of the mechanical and blower sounds can be entirely adjusted to suit your taste;
    ► Orage (a Thunder or a Drum) draws the lowest semitones in Pedal to sound simultaneously, giving strong storm-like subsonic beating effect;
    ► The following stops don't exist on the real instrument: Nasard 2 2/3 & Tierce 1 3/5 (Positif), Nasard 2 2/3 and Plein-Jeu (Recit), Contrebombarde 32 (Pedal)

    Superb demonstration of what is arguably the best Hauptwerk sample set - I think this is a must for students, enthusiasts and professionals alike. The ability to realize the registrations the French masters intended (and figure out how to use all the ventils) brings a new dynamic to the music.

    I got it in Hauptwerk set, sound is wonderful, especially for Franck, Vierne, Widor or Dupré. I've played on real Cavaillé-Coll's, I got back the feelings of the sound when I was a real organist and young ! I had a dream : the sample of the Saint-Ouen Cavaillé-Coll, from Rouen !! For Bach, I love the Friesach organ. I've owned Hauptwerk for three weeks, a short time ago, so for the moment I use only these two intruments, but I find it is sufficient. I am a piano teacher. Jacques, from France.

    I absolutely love this organ, the Messiaen, and the great performance by the organist. My interest in the organ began in 1963 when I first heard an 8 ft. Trompette begin the hymn, God of Our Fathers, and later, Dr. Richard Peek played this Messiaen piece when he recorded his one and only album at The Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC. Thank you.

    As much as I love the noise and kaleidoscopic colour of Dudelange, this remains my favourite large non-British symphonic organ on Hauptwerk. Utterly ravishing, especially through decent headphones, and thanks for having enough RAM and understanding of the aesthetic not to thin out the foundations: every harmonic counts with Cavaillé-Coll! La démonstration est superbe mais il ne s’agit pas du grand Cavaille-Coll de St Etienne de Caen. On entend ici un orgue néo-classique aux sonorités aiguës et certains jeux ont même été ajoutés, ils n’existent pas sur l’orgue de St Etienne.

    Richard, thank you so much for this video! I have a question - by way of comparison with the MDA Notre-Dame de-Metz Cavaille-Coll. I find that with the Metz Cavaille-Coll there's a large delay or latency between pressing the key/pedal and the sound coming forth - no matter what the latency settings in my computer and in HW. For whatever reason, I don't have this problem with my other MDA sample sets. Does the Caen sample set have that problem? If not, I'm interested in switching. Again, thank you for this demonstration!! Todd+

    I had to pop off to the Beeb for the proms [Dublin, no player : ( ].
    I'll listen to this after dinner.
    If you like Caen, you should consider St Omer. It's far more subtle (not as brash, or loud in the reeds), but has enough old pipes to do justice to the earlier French organ masses. Not as good for later 20th century stuff, but still very beautiful. (It still rocks with Mulet!).
    Another one to SERIOUSLY consider is Armley. Once you have used it, it's hard to leave. The sounds are just SO nice. The surround can be weird, until you use 3 sets of speakers. Then all makes sense!
    (hint: assign Echo to Gt. Most of the uses of the Echo are with Ch/Sw. hint ii: all the 8's on the echo work with the undulant. Amazingly well!!)

      PPs Did you revert to the French order of manuals halfway through the Recit reeds??????????

  • @jsbe1429
    @jsbe1429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is a serious keyboard setting error.
    The positive, in the Cavaillé Coll with three manuals, is the second keyboard, the one in the middle.
    The Great Organ is the first keyboard and the Recit is the third at the top.
    You have to respect the settings of the original organ, this detail is very important.
    Thank you!

    • @beautyinsound
      @beautyinsound  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s not an error - it’s completely intentional. Here in England the Positif is on the bottom manual, GO on the middle and Recit on the top. It was entirely my choice to have the manuals set up on this way, and the great thing about Hauptwerk is that people can choose how they arrange their manuals. Infact, on Organs such as Notre Dame in Paris, organists can switch the keyboards around. Thanks for your comment 😊

    • @jsbe1429
      @jsbe1429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      BEAUTY in SOUND
      So it's true, a person can do what he wants, and this is one of the nice opportunities of HAUPTWERK.
      But, in my opinion, it is also important to respect to the maximum, the arrangement of the original organs.
      We take as an example: if I were, in the future, to do a concert on an original Cavaille Coll, and they are all set so, apart from the option not used by anyone , in truth, at Notre Dame, it would be important to try so.
      And then, playing so makes you better understand the music written for these instruments by Franck, Widor, Vierne makes it more familiar is similar to how she was thought If she also does musical education, I think it is important to respect this.
      It's a shame not to, given his skill in the performances of the various music schools
      Greetings!

    • @beautyinsound
      @beautyinsound  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True..... somewhat. Nancy isn't entirely CC - it's a mongrel of an organ in the sense that it's now comprised of various organ builders. It still retains the very CC sound because of its reeds (Bombarde and Pedale, largely). I suppose this title is still true because Caen is still the largest entirely Cavaille-Coll available. Which one do you prefer, by the way?

    • @bowlerrollercoaster

      @@beautyinsound I don't own either but from what I've heard, Nancy has more realistic reverb. I can't afford to get a Hauptwerk organ that is why.
