An excellent organist, a magnificent Cavaillé-Coll tracker organ, and Widor's Toccata played at its composer's intended tempo. Some of God's greatest gifts! Thanks!
He is one of VERY few performers who give the pairs of eighth notes in the beginning the proper articulation indicated in the score: 1st 8th accented, 2nd 8th staccato. It makes a noticeable difference in the sound. Also, he has chosen a perfect temp for the room. Bravo! Felicitations!
THE REAL THING. I never thought I could get excited again about a performance of the Widor Toccata, but I was wrong. When you can hear (and watch) The Real Thing, it's electrifying. Tempo, touch, transitions, sound...oh, and notes -- all are perfect, just as written by the composer. Getting to see him make the seamless crescendo with the pedal levers without moving a single stop knob is valuable to us organists in other countries. This video is certainly a masterclass on how to play this popular piece properly, and it's a great joy to hear. Magnifique ! Thank you, Johann.
Stunning and with an appropriate tempo letting the majesty of the organ and work enfold. This must have been even more impressive in the cathedral itself than a recording could capture. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Bravo !
This is definitely the proper tempo as others have stated. It’s very similar to Widor’s own tempo, which can be heard on TH-cam from a recording he made in 1932. Well done!
This is a perfect tempo, and it is truly necessary for having the large bass pipes to sound (and reverberate!). Great job with the swell shutters! Totally masterful performance! (from Canada)
The Organ was originally built by Nicolas Dupont in 1763 and was expanded by Aristide Cavaille-Coll in 1861. The organ is in it's original case from Dupont. Same with the organ at Saint Sulpice in Paris. Where it was built by Francis-Henri Cliqcuot, and the case was built by Monsieur Joudot. And the organ was largely expanded by Cavaille-Coll in 1862.
A long time ago,I used to play the Halifax Parish (now Minster) instrument. It is a magnificent 4 manual Harrison and Harrison (major rebuild 1928 part rebuild 1980). It has a full set of reeds down to a 16’ Ophicleide. I used to play the Widor but this is much bigger solid sound. What a fabulous sound...even on the internet. I wish I could afford to go and hear this instrument live!
A truly inspirational perforamnce!! Thank you so much - amazing sound/recording engineering coupled with fantastic video really takes this to the next level. It's wonderful to see how a master manages the CC tools at 3:30 - BRAVO!
i LOVE his performance of this. the articulation, the pace, the expressiveness. i’m so impressed and moved ❤️ and the organ itself sounds incredible!!!
This is my favourite recording, but has anyone noticed that the highest note on the organ is F and the highest note in the toccata is f sharp. It is amazing how he hides this lack of an f sharp
The Barker machines alleviate most of the weight of the mechanical action, but I do not know what it's like as I have never played a Cavaillé-Coll before.
@@at0mcollision I played once the Uzès (th-cam.com/video/pVOaDmj9RiE/w-d-xo.html) in Southern France, with Barker machines : made me feel I was playing an electric traction. Absolutely no effort needed to press the key.

Absolutely magnificent performance. Bravo. This song is heavenly. Your talent on the organ is of a master Thank you. I love this organ piece so much. It earns my heart and soul.

@@northwestorient8735 Maybe this instrument was fairly unknown to the world till recently? At least they now make work of the promotion of this stunning instrument.
@@northwestorient8735 This instrument in terms of number of stops and pipes is larger than the famous instrument in St Ouen Rouen. St Sulpice though is much bigger. The amazing fact is that France has so many fantastic organs, it really can be challenging to appreciate it all.

No not really. The french big organs have a mechanism in the organ called "Parker Machine" witch helps you a lot to press the keys with all manual copplers. Thankfully to this machine when all couplers are engaged you will only feel the force of one manual.
The best interpretation ever on one of the best organs in the world played by one of the best organists in the world.
An excellent organist, a magnificent Cavaillé-Coll tracker organ, and Widor's Toccata played at its composer's intended tempo. Some of God's greatest gifts! Thanks!
Wonderful.
Widor said that the most difficult part of the piece was to get the staccato in the left hand. This gentleman has mastered it!!

The organ is really breathtaking, great execution!!!!
Perfect tempo and magnificent articulation. The instrument, needless to say, is marvelous.

I don’t recall a top F# required in this work.
@@tormus1 If you look closely at Kalevi Kiviniemi's recording at St. Ouen, you will notice that he uses the top F#.
He plays the F# an octave down
