I love Arcadia Quest as well, & got it @ Origins from Cool Stuff this yr. when I met Tom & Zee there! The burst combat dice, arcade-like play (w/ the coins & non-neutral monster pieces), & campaign play. (I had to get used to the cutesy chibi char. art tho, but the minis look great!)
Really enjoyed the top 100! Good job, Tom, Sam & Zee! But Tom is such an Eric Lang fan boy... I think next year there are going to be three of his designs in Tom's top 10.
Let me explain why Arcadia Quest is good. A big part of it is the "progress" through gear. While that might sound "okay" but when you have 3 other players also progressing with their characters through the campaign. That's a rare kind of board game experience. In Descent, you progress but you all are in the same time. In Arcadia Quest you progress but your competitors progress too not to mention the monsters as well. The Campaign is very fun to play through. Maps are fast to set up. Combat is VERY streamlined YET very involving. VERY easy to teach and doesn't feel shallow. I don't understand why Zee think it doesn't deserve to be anyone's favorite board game.
Arcadia Quest!! I have seen Dice Tower's review of it, and then I saw COMN gameplay for it and I just went completely out of my way to get it! I loved the whole idea and I can't wait for it to be delivered here in Brazil next week! :) I don't even have it and it is one of my favourite games already hahaha
+Randall Lasini I don't know if that's possible. I think co-op's are a much better fit for this kind of game, but I am betting there will be more legacy games in the next year or 2.
Arena of the planeswalker was unfourtnatly not cheap here in Sweden. Board games a quite expensive here im afraid :(. I might check out Mage Wars Academy.
It takes just as long to count hexes or squares for determining range. LOS can be determined easily with a laser pointer. Just takes a little practice. Granted it depends on the personalities you are playing with that determines how tedious the game is.
+TheGreatHamEl To be fair, Tom hated Chaos in the old world, because everyone is playing the bad guy trying to destroy the world. But in the others, unless you're playing the sin character or the horsemen characters, you're the good guy trying to save the world. I'm sure Tom would go for that.
Straddllw I still don't think it will rank at all. He doesn't prefer darker fantasy in general, and Descent is still his 1 vs many go to game of choice.
I can't find on your site where to the the People's Choice Vote. I would like to vote for Puerto Rico as my all time favorite and BattleTech/CityTech, Pandemic and Ticket to Ride will get a vote from me also.
The reason I've wound up with both Agricola and Caverna in my collection is that Caverna lacks a lot of the tension of Agricola with the feeding. If it wasn't so easy to get food in Caverna together, I think I'd have replaced Agricola with it - I prefer the system of Caverna - but as is, there are times I'm more in the mood for one, and times I'm more in the mood for the other.
Kvarnholmen Not really - Agricola is a purist worker placement, no twist on the mechanic, style thing, while Dungeon Lords does the out-guess the opposition thing of having you pick where your workers are going without knowing where your opponents are sending theirs, and in what order. Combined with 3 spaces for workers in each of the 8 slots, and it being predominantly a 4 player game, the fact that the #1 slot is always the worst, and the #2 and #3 slots are usually fairly situational as to which is better (Usually #2 gives a weaker effect to #3, but is also cheaper), gives a less puzzly and more psychological aspect to the game. ...Until you get to the scoring for which Dungeon Lords is just /weird/, where Dungeon Lords goes full on multiplayer solitaire with an almost puzzle thing played out simultaneously and near zero interaction. Two scoring phases a game, as adventurers raid your dungeon, destroying parts of it and possibly getting captured - negative points for the former, positive for the latter, evaluated at the end of the game. Also Agricola works far, far, better with a wider range of player counts (i.e. Dungeon Lords is fiddly as hell with 2, not ideal with 3 but playable, and clearly designed for 4) Nothing I've encountered that quite captures the feel of Dungeon Lords, or that Dungeon Lords really captures the feel of, for better and for worse.
My group REALLY enjoys Arcadia Quest. It's not really a dungeon crawl since it really more is a PvP game than one where you fight the game or DM. Well deserved game in the top 10! Dicemasters at #3 wow! I also love the game but find the sets being released way too fast and its close to feeling overwhelming. I also have Caverna but still like Agricola more due to the card drafting. The stress of Agricola also gives it a lot more "oomph" IMO..
Kemet might be my favorite game, despite the fact that I've only played it once so far, and we were only 2 players which isn't even recommended on BGG. I can only imagine how good it will be with more players.
Have to disagree about Mage Wars. I love Academy for all the reasons you said, but to me at least, it won't replace Arena. You lose one big thing that made Mage Wars great when you play Academy & that is the tactical movement. MW Arena is the flagship product of Arcane Wonders and I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon.
+LordOfWinter Stark Indeed. Also, let's remember that the tactical movement really was only six (or was it eight?) squares. Also, it was sometimes pain to get all the stuff fit on the board. I'm still very happy with Magic the Gathering, though. =)
+GrandElemental It's actually 12 zones, lol. It's a 4x3 rectangular Arena. & with the new Battlegrounds expansion, you have a bunch of tiles you can use to make any size/shape board you want. MtG has three things that I disliked about it, 1) Being a CCG, 2) The random card draw, and 3) Getting mana screwed. Not bashing anybody for liking it, it just had those things that I didn't like. MW doesn't have any of those things. It does have it's own problems but they don't bother me as much as the ones I thought MtG had.
***** Yeah, I'm not saying MtG is perfect, but I tolerate its problems much rather than the problems of Mage Wars. Granted, I've only played Mage Wars thrice, all games around 3-4 hours. That is a huge downside for the game for me, it's long and it just felt nothing interesting really happened, there were no critical peak moments which I remember. Most of the time it was just dull. And while MtG certainly has the random draw problem, Mage Wars adds its share of randomness with the dice. When it comes to cards vs. dice, my choice has always been cards. Of course, in the end, it comes down to your personal preference. To me, just the fact that the time (including set-up) difference is huge, I don't really want to play Mage Wars ever again. If I want meatier card game, I much rather play Race for the Galaxy.
That has been the common complaint, the play time. & it was that way for me at first too but as with any game, the time it takes to play reduces over time. My MW games consistently take around 75 minutes now. & while there is randomness with the dice, by their nature, they tend to average out over the course of a game. You'll have both below average rolls and above average ones. Whereas random card draw is completely random. I totally agree though, it depends on personal preferences. The problem is that many people come into Mage Wars expecting it to be this simple 45 minute card game when it is really more akin to a miniatures game in complexity and length.
***** The balancing out with dice is true, but when there are some dice rolls that are vastly more critical than others, the game itself won't balance out. The thing with MtG is that even if you get screwed by cards, it's like 5-10mins and then you get to play again, instantly, as there is really no set-up time at all.
In case you appreciate Talisman - The Magical Quest as much as I do, you might want to take a look at my new Kickstarter. Search for 'Metal Coins Designed for the Talisman Board Game' on KS or check my video for the the direct link.
I'm guessing rum & bones and pandemic legacy are two of those three games that could make it into his top 100 next year, but i don't know the other one mmmm
+Derekrledr Before answering to your comment I want to say that I havent played Pandemic legacy nor Risk legacy, so the answer Im going to give you is just based on assumptions I have of those games. My assumption is that risk legacy and pandemic legacy can be played around the same amount of times (I guess?) since pretty much both are about a campaign where your decisions from a round affect one of the next rounds and thats more or less the basic concept of those games. It looks like Tom really loves Pandemic legacy right now, and risk legacy has been in his top 100 last year and also this year, so I wouldnt be surprised if pandemic legacy is in his top 100 next year. Sorry for the long post, cheers.
+BigSqueeGG They are quite different. I prefer 2. Most people prefer 2, you'll find the occasional purist that will complain how 2 isn't nearly the game 1 was, but they are few and far between. It is heavily streamlined (which is a good thing) compared to the original. I find it much easier to get to the table now.
Lachlan Blackmore Is it easy to transition all my original Descent stuff to 2.0. Also, would 2.0 basic be enough to try, or would I need 2.0 expansions?
+BigSqueeGG there is a conversion kit that has monster cards/character sheets for all 1.0 monsters/heroes. Note: the hero&villain packs have updated sculpts and rules for these, with some better balancing.. that said I play without those packs, and don't have trouble using just the cards from my conversion kit. Some conversion kit heroes are lacklustre but I have over 50, so whatever, right?
Duel of Ages II has one of the largest strategy guides on Board Game Geek at this point: www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1085145/duel-ages-ii-strategy-guide/page/1
Interesting to see the slight debate over arcadia quest. It is a simple game, for me it would easily go top 5, not just top 10. Its easy to say simple, cute, kids, really, top 10? but surely its experience? and there are few games that match it for the experience, simple, kids, cute game or not. Eric Lang certainly is making some solid enjoyable games at the moment. While they may not be the cleverest or most complex games ever... they are hard to beat for enjoyment at the moment. Which I think is shown with games quickly shooting in to top tens, or getting so many games on peoples best games of the year lists.
I knew Tom likes Smashing Up lots of different factions and themes and powers and genres into one game (like Smash Up), but hadn't realized they'd be his top 4 this year. Next year Smash Up will be number 5.
"Descent 2 allowed the [Overlord] to fight back pretty strongly"? Not really. The overlord's deck in 2e is weaker than that in 1e., and the monsters are made of glass. What Tom doesn't mention in his list is that when he plays, he'll simply change the encounters on the fly if he thinks they're imbalanced.
Tom it already cost to much to get heroscape and here you are hoarding away tons of sets. then you put it on your list that will make the price go up even more. how will i collect every piece now?
Definitely see a trend here. Seems like the bulk of the top 10 games are dude on a map. Each of the games are distinctive in their own right, but at least 5 fall into that broader category.
+Michael Smith That's fair statement. I guess I could narrow this down to being skirmish games with a fantastical element: Duel of Ages, HeroScape, Kemet, Arcadia Quest, Summoner wars, and to a lesser extent Descent. Only Caverna and Cosmic Encounter seem to really break this mold. I realize that these games offer differing play experiences, but it still felt like a lot of the same type of game. which probably makes sense, as we all have leanings in our favorite types of games. I was just hoping for more diversity.
Interesting how different your taste is from mine. I do not like card games. I love miniature combat and record sheets. I understand why these games appeal to one audience but I am from a different one.
I think Tom seems a little apologetic about this "thanks for suffering through this"; maybe it's time for a two year rest to keep it fresh? ( I'm just keeping it real folks).
+GoldenSirius far as I can tell, it's not the same game at all! One has positioning and spatial relationships at its core, academy completely skips that element.
1. Cosmic Encounter
2. HeroScape
3. DiceMasters
4. Duel of Ages II
5. Summoner Wars
6. Kemet
7. Arcadia Quest
8. Descent 2.0
9. Mage Wars: Academy
10. Caverna: The Cave Farmers
"Games that usually everyone likes are no one's favorite" ~ Good quote Zee.
"and it's as good as 10 games!..." lol!
Jake Kamps is a great way
Tom's number one is Phase 10? That's new.
+NeoGenMike Tschida Dude, that's not funny, we both know it is "Munchkin : Trading in the Mediterranean".
+NeoGenMike Tschida I was more suprised that Cards against Humanity made the call.
Didn't expect Kemet's climb! I spent like a month past Holidays thinking if I bought it or not and chose not to. I'll have to rethink it. Again :P
Really enjoyed the top 100! Good job, Tom, Sam & Zee!
But Tom is such an Eric Lang fan boy... I think next year there are going to be three of his designs in Tom's top 10.
I'm with Tom with Arcardia Quest on this one, it's actually only one of two game I'd be prepared to give a solid 10/10 (the other being Earth Reborn).
Let me explain why Arcadia Quest is good. A big part of it is the "progress" through gear. +Randall Lasini I don't know if that's possible. I think co-op's are a much better fit for this kind of game, but I am betting there will be more legacy games in the next year or 2.
+Bob Gabriels risk legacy wasnt coop????
and of course the legacy jump the shark moment will be "love letter:legacy"
+Randall Lasini
Munchkin legacy: each play you lose a friend ... forever !
“Some people say that Jason is like midget among men...”
Others say he's a little sawed off - "I'm not even 4'10!"
I think I've seen all the videos now, but I might have missed one. Can't remember seeing forbidden stars anywhere?
Arena of the planeswalker was unfourtnatly not cheap here in Sweden.
Board games a quite expensive here im afraid :(.
I might check out Mage Wars Academy.
KEMET!!
+Watch It Played Rodney, do you prefer Kemet to Cyclades?
+TheGreatHamEl Well, you know me, I avoid reviews and comparisons. I'll leave that to the guys here. I do own both games though, I'll say that.
+Watch It Played I almost got ya! ;)
+TheGreatHamEl Not. Even. Close. :)
+Watch It Played You could've let me keep my hollow victory! lol
Zee, that's a new top 10. Best (or worst) end game conditions/scoring.
It takes just as long to count hexes or squares for determining range. LOS can be determined easily with a laser pointer. Just takes a little practice. Granted it depends on the personalities you are playing with that determines how tedious the game is.
Tom, have you ever played mice and mystics? I feel like you would enjoy the theme a lot, and the dungeon-crawl aspect.
i can't stop singing that theme, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Seeing how Tom loves Eric Lang games so much, I can't wait to see his reaction to Others: 7 Sins and Apocalypse.
+Straddllw I doubt it'll rank at all.

Most awesome intro to a video ever
I can't find on your site where to the the People's Choice Vote. I would like to vote for Puerto Rico as my all time favorite and BattleTech/CityTech, Pandemic and Ticket to Ride will get a vote from me also.
+Efrain Rivera Junior It looks like they have already closed the voting.
I love Zee's expressions.
Was King of Tokyo anywhere on the top 100?
Hello, ca you make videos about Sam's and Zee's like last year ? At least top 20!!!
The reason I've wound up with both Agricola and Caverna in my collection is that Caverna lacks a lot of the tension of Agricola with the feeding. I like dice masters as well, but really want a decent rule set to be able to play marvel legendary with dice masters.
Kvarnholmen

Yes Kemet, I can`t wait to get the expansion

+Eyal Itsik that could be it! That one didnt cross my mind.
Next year I think he shout not include Sam and Zee. They make this whole thing a drag.
where is sam healeys list? hes the one with good taste anyway
how about a live play of Dual of Ages 2?
I have all Descent 1.0 with expansions. Should I even bother with 2.0? I hear it's pretty shitty compared to the first one. Anyone's thoughts?
+BigSqueeGG They are quite different. I prefer 2. Most people prefer 2, you'll find the occasional purist that will complain how 2 isn't nearly the game 1 was, but they are few and far between. Definitely try it if you get a chance.

Ha I get it! Up is a direction. In response to Zee's question. Lol so clever.
i think Dungeon Saga will be a killer for Descent
Love the theme song. It sounds like Frank Zappa.
Human sacrifice. Dogs and cats, living together. Cosmic Encounter... not on the list! Mass hysteria!
When you look at Lang games: Dice Masters, Arcadia Quest, Pandemic, Blood Rage....
Yeah, not hard to see why he gets so much appreciation.
Pandemic? Eric Lang didn't design Pandemic.
+12thLevelSithLord you're right, my mistake. I always miss up lang and Leacock in my head :s
"Descent 2 allowed the [Overlord] to fight back pretty strongly"? Not really. The overlord's deck in 2e is weaker than that in 1e., and the monsters are made of glass. +john bryant I kinda doubt Tom Vasel has that much influence on the second hand market of Heroscape.
It is known since the beginning that cosmic is his #1.
Definitely see a trend here. Seems like the bulk of the top 10 games are dude on a map. Each of the games are distinctive in their own right, but at least 5 fall into that broader category.
+Michael Smith That's fair statement. Nice intro bud
Tom said, at one point, that there was a game that replaced lost cities for him...but now I can't find it! help, anyone?
Cool video as always, but the armpit microphone syndrome (the static)could be improved upon ...
Interesting how different your taste is from mine. I do not like card games. I love miniature combat and record sheets. I understand why these games appeal to one audience but I am from a different one.
I CAN'T TAKE IT WHAT ARE THE THREE GAMES
+Derek Thompson Pandemic Legacy and 7 Wonders: Duel would be 2... I'm not sure what the 3rd would be
+Nick Johnson Blood Rage.
+TheMidnightpatronus It was on the list.
Derek Thompson Was it? Damn...I suck at remembering things..
When we going to see Sam's and Zee's Top 100 ?
+Twister4815 As soon as you look them up and watch them!
+Twister4815 They don't do them every year.
Er, guys? Where do I find 30 to 21 Tom's best games of all time? Ta
I think Tom seems a little apologetic about this "thanks for suffering through this"; maybe it's time for a two year rest to keep it fresh? ( I'm just keeping it real folks).
So, from, what, second best game of all time, Mage Wars arena is now not even in the top 100? That's a serious fall from grace...
+Mark Turner It was just replaced with Mage Wars Academy. It's the same game.
+GoldenSirius far as I can tell, it's not the same game at all! One has positioning and spatial relationships at its core, academy completely skips that element.
All Top ten were skirmish games?
It is complete crap that you can do anything in Caverna and still win. If you don't do questing, you will lose. period.
The art-style for Arcadia Quest actually makes me turn and run full-tilt. Can't stand it. Super-deformed does not work with my fantasy.
Magic is the goat 🐐
Caverna > All
Nothing from dice tower essential!!!
Just give Zeee little japanese 10 minute fillers.
Boom boom boom boom!
CAVERNA! YAY!
First! See you in Essen Folks!!! YEHAH!!!
no love for infamy or TI REX.....
That's a stupid hat Tom
pls get a new camera.
How can you have Caverna in there? This game is so overrated...Le Havre beats it easily.
