Sam, we played Shadows over Camelot for the first time this weekend with 7 people and it was exactly as you said. Everyone was nervous at how overwhelming it looked on the table then by the end they were loving. We lost and they can't wait to get their revenge.

I don’t understand how Jamaica can be so high on Sam and Zees list, yet you guys don’t know that when you draw a special treasure card, the rules say you must put it face up beside your holds. The rules are all of one page long! The Game Boy Geek said the same thing in his review of the expansion. At the beginning of the game you simply say: If you draw any of these four cards, put them face up next to your holds and I’ll explain them. Love the vids, keep up the good work!
I wonder if nowadays their ability to refresh their top games with newer games is impacted by how busy they are and by not being able to play a new game multiple times... That way only the ones that are love at first sight make the list, while older games benefit from having been played multiple times... Clearly there are many games that require multiple plays to really demonstrate its full value.
Yes, I fully agree with Tom on Champions of Midgard. The game was already significantly higher than 142 for me before but the expansions absolutely elevated the game to a new level. What a great game!
So glad to see Project: Elite so high. I taught it at Meeplecon last year and we had an EPIC ending for the win! Hopefully, a publisher picks this up, would like the additional map expansions.
I totally agree with Zee about Jamaica being easier to teach with new expansion. It makes sense to everyone that you get something when you pay at a port, and I really like that the special treasures are out of the deck. I taught it to a group of my students last week, and it was the easiest any group I have taught it to has gotten into the game.

Sam, thank you for spreading the word about Hanamikoji - got the game thanks to your multiple recommendations on the channel... and it is everything you said it was: quick, non-trivial, deep for what there is in the box. Though even after I played it more than a few times I'm still trying to figure it out - somehow even though I play a lot of heavier and abstract games this one is more than a quick filler.
Zee, we love the Gipf series. I love YINSH (probably my favorite, but only because it was the first one we played), but it seems TZAAR makes it to the table more often. The reason it does is because it is super easy to understand. I have been playing this with my seven year old grandson for two years now! I can still beat him of course, but he is getting better and better at it. He requests to come over, just play it. GREAT GAME! Oh, and I can beat my analytical husband at this game, so that's a huge plus!

WOW, from 142 to 14. I think I liked Champions of Midgard better than you did before, Tom, but I fully agree the expansions just put the gamt on a whole other level. It is now my second favorite game of all time. Grey Fox Games did an amazing job with the expansions, making everything cool about the game cooler, and "fixing" the one thing some could say was a flaw. It's an almost perfect game now.

Word to the camera man. Switch camera over to manual and set up the shot. Because it was on some auto settings the exposure and white balance changes quite drastically throughout.
Trevin Taylor that is why a location where they can totally control lighting should be picked or they should be lit in a way that a bright or dark background doesn't affect the way their faces are lit. No matter what though auto settings should be the very last option for any video production professional. Having exposure set to auto would not be as bad as having white balance on auto... white balance will change the color of the Image from blue to orange and looks funky. It was just a word of advice and feedback. This video content was great
Did something happen to Zee off-camera at some point in the video? He seems down and like he's preoccupied with something else all of a sudden, after a certain point. I'm not complaining, I just started getting worried for him, and he usually has so much energy in these videos that it's really noticeable if he's not being himself. He's also the one with tastes most similar to mine, so I usually pay more attention to his picks. Anyway, just something I noticed; hope everything's alright with him and his family. Hopefully I'm just reading too much into it.

They should consider doing a top 25 games under $30. I realize prices fluctuate, but a ballpark $30 or under range would be nice. Most of these games sound interesting, but they're either out of print and crazy expensive, or $50 games. Tough to afford them at those price points. :D

shockway1 In the Top 10 Required expansions video he included Pegasus. That is because he doesn't play it very often, though, maybe a few times per year. Pegasus is actually the worst expansion since its new objective (New Caprica) is terrible and a lot of people don't like the airlock mechanics. Probably the best expansion was the last one, Daybreak, though a lot of people like the Cylon Fleet board in Exodus. I'd say that no BSG set is perfect though without all three because there are so many fun characters in each, and certain useful cards and pieces in each. Pegasus gives you fixed Investigative Committees (can't see the destiny cards) and plastic basestars, Exodus the Fleet Board and new ships, and Daybreak new Cylon Attack Cards, Earth, and many more characters. Check out the threads on BGG for more discussion and detailed reviews. Also remember that many BGGers play BSG way more than Sam does.
Terraforming Mars is my 43rd favorite game. I really like it, but is too long for what it is. Blood Rage is currently my 34th favorite game but with only 1 play. Shadows Over Camelot is not on my top 100, but want to say I bought into the hype this game has had over the years by the Dice Tower, and was one of few games I couldn't decide if I liked or not with 1 or even 2 plays, but on my 3rd play I realized it was not one I cared for. I would play it again, but would never request it. I sold my copy. Jamaica as I recently shared is my 73rd favorite game and a great success with my family. Ricky Eads Agreed, and I also agree with Zee about the theme, like Splendor the theme can be completely stripped out and the game could be played with just icons.
My favorite is still Ambierona rolling the exact number of each entry, the way the humor escalated with the list as I was sitting there wondering "god, how many takes did this poor person have to roll through." was hilarious! :D
I like Fairy Tale as a "gateway" experience since it's probably one of the easiest games to teach. Haven't played 7 Wonders but from what I've seen it does NOT look easier to me...
7 Wonders has been a little shaky the few times we taught new players. I'm also really bad at explaining how it's resource mechanic works. :) Still it's been popular, but nobody asks to play it for a long time after we play a few rounds with them.
I love you guys and these lists, but I honestly have a hard time understanding how you can consider a Game the 11th best of ALL TIME after playing it only twice..
Its their opinion, they can decide after one play, that's what an opinion is, also the fact they do these lists every year makes the list more of a hot 100 really with some aspects of their favorite games ever.
Sam's ameritrash brain has been contaminated by Blood Rage, the eurogame in ameritrash clothing. It can be the only explanation for the drastic adjustments in his list this year. :P
That's an important part of scale though hence many, many games do not scale well at all. The ones that manage to keep a game within acceptable lengths though despite player count really do take the scaling award. Ethnos is one good example. Even with 6 players, that game is done and dusted in a short time. But TM for example, 3 + hours with 4 or more players just outstays itself especially when it's mostly luck of the draft. When time is such a precious resource, the art of scaling time lengths of games should be something designers need to take more interest in. But with games like TM, GWT, Colonists, TTA, etc, they seem to think we all have unlimited time on our hands to sit in one game.
I play Talisman games which normaly last 8 hours. But I now do that only about 1-2 times a year. But now that I play newer games my patience for long games is diminishing, and so even Terraforming Mars is a bit long, but I think the balance of game play is fine with a full compliment. I think requesting a short game with higher player counts, should be a separate category than scales well. Mission: Red Planet plays 6 people in 90 minutes for example.
Problem is, if you do that, I figure the amount of games that would be considered to "scale well" would increase dramatically. You either have too many or too few, but the reason for that is because scaling in general isn't thought about enough with designers. You know that's the case whenever any game or expansion comes out with 5 players or "add a 5th player" on the box. Because 95% of the time, adding a 5th player destroys the game that was obviously designed for max 4.
Vernon must be painting wrong then because my rising sun pops when the monsters are on the board. No matter where I am people always walk by and stop and look when we pull this one out.
I bought Legendary Encounters. I'm sort of annoyed at all the people who's reviews I watched/read - it's an absolute nightmare to set up on your first game.
Finally got to play it recently with 5 players and never again will I touch it with 5 players again. As Dracula you spend so much time just sitting there waiting as the game just goes on for so long - over 3 hours for a hidden movement game is insane. It's thematic and fun, but yeah if I play this game again I'm capping it at 3 players max.
What is with the really drab artwork on so many box covers? Asante and so many others have these people with desert backgrounds, wearing 1st century turbans and draped cloth. Is that actually appealing to anyone?

Jeff Connell Why? They played several games of Rising Sun, with production copies, and liked it enough to beat many of their top 100 games... so it must be in their Top 100 Games list by definition. Consider the alternative: “This is my number 16 but in reality I like another game better than this that I won’t include in the list”?
Urgh... Ticket To Ride is an awful game. Badly designed with no mitigation. Pull bad cards each and every turn? - tough luck. Someone hogging all the colour cards you need? -tough luck. Oh, and by the way... you'll get further punished at the end of the game for not completing your routes. To me, Ticket To Ride is now out-dated, in the same way most roll-and-move games are. We've moved on from this. I won't play Ticket To Ride anymore as it's just not fun being punished for being unlucky and unable to do anything about it.

Kyle Braby but the back lighting kept changing since they were on the porch. You need the white balance to change to compensate.

I like Fairy Tale as a "gateway" experience since it's probably one of the easiest games to teach. Haven't played 7 Wonders but from what I've seen it does NOT look easier to me...
7 Wonders has been a little shaky the few times we taught new players. I'm also really bad at explaining how it's resource mechanic works. :) Still it's been popular, but nobody asks to play it for a long time after we play a few rounds with them.

Its their opinion, they can decide after one play, that's what an opinion is, also the fact they do these lists every year makes the list more of a hot 100 really with some aspects of their favorite games ever.

I think it scales well, but is too long. if you weigh in on length of game play for scale, you would have to discount too many games.
That's an important part of scale though hence many, many games do not scale well at all. The ones that manage to keep a game within acceptable lengths though despite player count really do take the scaling award. Ethnos is one good example. Even with 6 players, that game is done and dusted in a short time. But TM for example, 3 + hours with 4 or more players just outstays itself especially when it's mostly luck of the draft.
When time is such a precious resource, the art of scaling time lengths of games should be something designers need to take more interest in. But with games like TM, GWT, Colonists, TTA, etc, they seem to think we all have unlimited time on our hands to sit in one game.
I play Talisman games which normaly last 8 hours. But I now do that only about 1-2 times a year. But now that I play newer games my patience for long games is diminishing, and so even Terraforming Mars is a bit long, but I think the balance of game play is fine with a full compliment. I think requesting a short game with higher player counts, should be a separate category than scales well. Mission: Red Planet plays 6 people in 90 minutes for example.
Problem is, if you do that, I figure the amount of games that would be considered to "scale well" would increase dramatically. You either have too many or too few, but the reason for that is because scaling in general isn't thought about enough with designers. You know that's the case whenever any game or expansion comes out with 5 players or "add a 5th player" on the box. Because 95% of the time, adding a 5th player destroys the game that was obviously designed for max 4.
I think is scales well, I have played with all player counts.

Well im surprised as i thought the first edition was amazing and the 3rd edition was good but not great
Finally got to play it recently with 5 players and never again will I touch it with 5 players again. As Dracula you spend so much time just sitting there waiting as the game just goes on for so long - over 3 hours for a hidden movement game is insane. It's thematic and fun, but yeah if I play this game again I'm capping it at 3 players max.

Urgh... Ticket To Ride is an awful game. Badly designed with no mitigation. Pull bad cards each and every turn? - tough luck. Someone hogging all the colour cards you need? -tough luck. Oh, and by the way... you'll get further punished at the end of the game for not completing your routes.
To me, Ticket To Ride is now out-dated, in the same way most roll-and-move games are. We've moved on from this.
I won't play Ticket To Ride anymore as it's just not fun being punished for being unlucky and unable to do anything about it.
