Lake Pontchartrain Hammers! Speckled Trout Love This Area

  • Every fall in November (roughly) Louisiana's big speckled trout hang around the long bridges that span Lake Pontchartrain, a huge tidal lake connected to the Gulf of Mexico. One of those bridges, The Trestles, is a train bridge, and it is a favorite hangout for these big trout. In Louisiana, a 20 plus inch trout is now considered a very nice trout (by me anyway). They do catch some much bigger trout in some of Louisiana's neighboring states, but Lake Pontchartrain is a good place to catch some of the biggest Louisiana has to offer. A favorite method for this is tight lining a jig head with a soft plastic swim bait, which is the method I use in this video. Bring Plenty of jig heads and a good attitude because snags on the bridge are plentiful and so is the boat traffic. Thanks for joining me.
If you are local (most of you watching this video are), and you don't have a good church to go to, come join me at Bethany Church. Bethany has five campuses so go to Bethany.com and find a campus close to you. I usually attend the Baton Rouge Campus at 9am, so if you come, look for me and come say hey. Tight lines.

It’s been a strange year for sure. We have a much higher salt content this year in a lot of the areas I fish. Probably because the rivers are super low and not much fresh water entering the area. I’ve also seen a huge decrease in the number of bass in these areas which is kind of a bummer.

I love these videos and this one in particular. You are one of a small few who show details. Most guys don't show the specifics. You share where you are, time, date, what you are using and presentation of the lure. Keep'em coming cause I'm hooked.

Do you use your sonar to locate fish or just pick a spot and then stick and move? That is a Grizzly 2072 you fish from right, I am picking up a 1860 cc this coming Tuesday and can't wait to get it on the water. Who knows maybe someday I will see you in Hopedale, I plan on going there a lot. Great video, I am learning a lot from you, thank you.

It’s an 1860 like what you are getting. When we bought the boat, it came with a nice fish finder, but I promptly ripped the transducer off running shallow water like I do so I never really used it. I’m sure it would help, but I just rely on my redneck senses and a little luck lol. Hope you guys enjoy the new boat! Love meeting people at the marina so holler at me if you see me.

Nice video! I’m glad to see some solid fish being caught at the bridges. We might get see some really good fish this winter like there used to be many years ago. When a 5 or 6lb trout was no big deal and a common occurrence. You’d have to put one in the boat that was closer to 8 lbs to get people’s attention. L&N train bridge and Seabrook would seem to produce fish that size every year. Hwy 11 and the Trestle would as well. Kenny Kreeger caught the 2nd largest trout ever caught in Louisiana at the Lake P bridges. 11.99 lbs….January 1999 I think it was.

@@Jar_Fishing Those really large fish got scarce when they installed the MRGO dam after Katrina. There were a few caught over the next year or two but then they disappeared.

Yep,Lotta folks give up on Trestles as they are not allowing lure to snug up on bottom and if ya not getting grass, hung up,etc,ya AINT contacting bottom!!!Thanks for de video and gonna be floatilla out there pronto!!!I have been tossing a much bigger soft plastic,Lunker City Lures,Shaker in 3.75-4 in Jungle Jazz or Vampire lure!

Yes sir. Throwing that larger profile will lower your overall catch rate, but the ones that do hit it will be gorillas.

FYI: Learned the following at a BASS seminar waayyy back…cast lure, DO NOT TURN REEL HANDLE/DO NOT CLOSE BAIL--feed several feet to allow lure to contact bottom! By turning the reel handle/closing the bail…there is no extra slack on the line and the lure comes back towards you therefore you ‘loose’ several feet of your cast-could be critical-lure gets out of the initial strike zone! ALL OBSERVED IN A CLEAR WATER CASTING TANK…Kevin Van Damne. For simplicity sake… imagine fishing in 100 feet of water… Casting 100 feet - lock down the reel…where do you think the lure will be…it will be Straight down… not where it hit the water initially! Great video…!!!!

    • @alldaveallnight4581

Very true. The only thing is….you have to watch that line while it’s falling. So many people miss fish that strike while the bait is falling on a slack line. You have to be ready to engage the reel, take up enough slack and set the hook before they spit it. They’ve had me cursing on more than one occasion 😂

@@JCASTELLUCCIOJR Depending on where I’m fishing….I’ve started casting a good bit further than where I want the bait to contact the bottom. I engage the reel and let it fall back towards me on a tight line. Doing that has nearly eliminated all the missed strikes. Of course this is nearly impossible to do while jigging the pilings at the Trestle. That bait needs to pretty much fall straight down when you throw it right against the piling.
