  • Were the gods of the nations evil from the beginning? When the Lord allots the gods to the nations, "according to the number of the sons of God" (Deuteronomy 32:8-9)? The question comes from reading of their judgment in Psalm 82. When did they go bad? You have two options. Check it out!

    "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts." - That pretty much sums up anyone imagining they can pin God within very finite human logic, and scripture on both sides of the verses warns anyone about that. If itchy ears somehow caused you to circumvent that warning, then that has a cost.

    • @aidan-ator7844
      @aidan-ator7844 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly, people have always told me that you can always ask whether God exists or not but the really big question is why does something exist rather than nothing. I have always responded saying that it is not such a huge question when you realise that the concept of existence means something entirely to God than it means to us. It is impossible for us to even comprehend it.

    • @GalenCurrah
      @GalenCurrah 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @nevig6557
      @nevig6557 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GalenCurrah Well, just that you ask, means that you don't understand what God said. There are things that scripture warns you about in regard to prognosticating on God. One of those things is 'The Mind of God'. So..in context, I shall say Heiser does bring clarity to a few aspects of 'text' as regards origins or certain dialects etc. .but as for the parts where he flies off into fables like 'there is no 'devil' in Job' etc..Then I can say in terms of what Jesus said..Heiser is incorrect. 'Satan' is no 'employee' of God. If that were so then you should consider the Lake of Fire the hottest bonus any employee ever got.
      Is Heiser always false? No.
      So..you need to be careful what you sponge up. And no..your 'logic' doesn't apply to God because that's unfathomable for you...exactly as the 'warning' in Job is to anyone.
      Of course you can have the vanity to think you have the logic to apply to God, but you'd be severely mistaken.
      Heiser talks mostly in terms of his books, and how he connects his sometimes imaginary dots. There's an easy way to know if you can apply your logic to God.
      Simply read 'God questions Job'.. then answer any 3 questions God asks Job. If you answer one, then that'll let you know for sure that you have an answer for God, so can apply your level of logic. I think that should help you with your question.

      @@christinebainbridge8774 I was not being mean.😊
      Of course, as you can see, if you just assumed that from my text, imagine what can happen in scriptural text?
      And..that's the exact reason many think "YHWH is the evil God". Maybe you read too much into that..but scripture does WARN anyone about contesting God's thoughts and acts.
      I suppose you'd think God was very mean to Job then just on 'questioning' him somewhat severely?
      Or do you think all that exists for the Christian believer to "learn" something very important? Isn't God issuing you a WARNING in all that?
      Im just curious because many times when someone is told something very plainly, then its all 'mean' or 'unbrotherly'.
      That's generally the perception to bypass the actual point. Many people do that : to instantly imagine they're attacked, then not answer.
      The example of the text may seem cutting to you because it contains a stern warning.
      How would you answer Galen? Just curious.

    I totally agree with Dr Heiser here. I just have a question. Maybe someone can help me out with this. God did seem to have an evil spirit working for Him in 1 Kings 22:22. English Standard Version
    And the LORD said to him, ‘By what means?’ And he said, ‘I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And he said, ‘You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.’ Can anyone help me understand how this spirit isn’t evil if it volunteers to be a lying spirit to help God have King Ahab deceived. I understand the spirit is helping God but it seems to take pleasure in being deceitful. Thank you & God bless each & every one of you! 🙏🏻

    Good job Dr. Heiser. However, there are still some things about your Deut. 32 worldview that I'm trying to wrap my head around.
    1.) Did each of the nations after Babel get allotted an entire pantheon of gods or a single son of God? For example, was Egypt ruled by all the mythical gods we learned about in school or was it under the spiritual control of just one guy?
    2.) Do only ancient Near-Eastern nations, which were most affected by Babel, have gods? Did India, China, Japan, and places in Africa and the Americas receive their gods, or are they just completely devoid of any principalities?

      1. Could have been given one of the fallen watchers as a 'god' and from there that god allowed other evil spirit beings to rule under them. Why is that not an option?
      2. Yes, all other nations have an assigned principality. From the table of nations, which spread out over the earth, other sub groups would have broken off from the initial as they spread out, and from that other fallen gods were added. The Apostle Paul talks of a hierarchy of evil beings we contend with.
      Do I have credentials which give me credibility? No. Just using a little logic. I could be wrong.

      @@lynnv8501 The Watchers who fell were locked up in Tartarus mostly. A few others were locked up in the earth & separated from them for some reason. The Watchers seem to be a lower rank of celestial being. I would think the Principalities are from a higher ranking class of celestial. Michael is a very powerful angel. Probably one of the most powerful angels we see in Scripture. However, he was prevented by a Principality of Persia for a period of time when he was sent to answer Daniel. Paul does speak of these principalities and powers and rulers. Jesus made a show of them openly. In fact, Id say not only did He do it by defeating the grave but He did it when he defeated the gods of Egypt & made a fool of them before all of heaven and earth. Its through our Redemption that we are freed from their spiritual authority & power. We cannot bring them down or dethrone them. People have weird ideas about spiritual warfare. The strongholds that we have the authority to bring down are ideas and imaginations cast upon us that are contrary to the Knowledge and Will of God. In other words, we have a choice to surrender to their influence that the world does not.

    Even if those beings were evil before he apportioned the nations to them... It wouldn't be all that different to Israel going into exile within evil nations.
    In both cases, God essentially is saying to people that should have been loyal to Him, "You want to be free from all of my blessings? Fine, here you go. See how much good it does you to serve these tyrants."
    So the evil "gods" of the nations would not have been on God's payroll. The whole reason the nations were given over to them is that they weren't God's allies... They were enemies that he could use.

    Hi Dr. Heiser,
    Thank you for blessing the body with your insights through study. I have learned much from your works and have gone into academia myself. I would love to hear your opinion on this if you have the time to give it...
    Firstly, I am in agreement that these sons of God weren't in opposition to YHWH at their initial emplacement. I think the Melchizedek/Abraham story is a perfect example of this (Gen 14:18-20, cf. Heb 7). Abraham gave him tithes, recognizing that they served the same God, El Elyon, and Melchizedek was from Salem (traditionally recognized as Jerusalem, therefore, the land of Canaan). It seems that only after that particular son of God rebelled did Israel displace the Canaanites and claim the promised land for themselves some 400+ years later.
    Secondly, I would like to ask for a point of clarification regarding the notion that evil spirits aren't on God's payroll. In the divine council scene of the Micaiah story (2Kin 22:19-23), God authorizes a lying spirit to go accomplish a task. At this time the law was instituted in Israel and, therefore, also the commandments therein. So my question is: was the spirit who opined the suggestion to be a lying spirit an evil spirit? If so, doesn't that put evil spirits on God's payroll as current members of the council? If not, without your help, I would have trouble reconciling the implications.
    Thank you for your time and God bless!

Therefore he has mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardens. You will say then to me, Why does he yet find fault? For who has resisted his will? This depends on a few things, how do you define creation? Is it how a 21st century or ANE Israelite would see it?
      To directly answer your question, Mike’s view is that God was saying his creation(bara in the Hebrew) which assigned function was good. In other words, it was what God wanted. Mike would also say that “it is good” refers to the end product act of creating/assigning function. So in one sense, it was good, but he didn’t assign function to everything in existence so to say “all” wouldn’t make sense. At the same time, one could say “it was all good” in the sense that everything he created in that moment was good. I hope that makes sense.

    When the wicked are fulfilling the purposes of God, how can they justly be held accountable? Not every evil deed is foreordained, for not every evil deed forms part of the predeterminate counsel of God, but it must surely be by his permission. We do know from Scripture that some evil deeds are foreordained, like the selling of Joseph or the crucifixion of our Lord, and that in spite of their predetermination those who performed them were nevertheless held accountable. What kind of justice is it that holds men accountable for an evil deed which it has been foreordained they shall perform? It seems that Paul, when speaking to the Christians in Rome, had been asked this very question, "Who then is morally accountable?" Or as he put it in Romans 9:19: "You will say then unto me, Why does He yet find fault? For who has resisted his will?" On what basis will any man be judged accountable if the sovereignty of God really extends this far?
    Is the surgeon who removes a hand to save a life, evil? Is radiologist who kill cancer while making his patient sick to the point of death, evil? I think now....explains Isaiah 45:7. God not only permits evil, He creates evil. The Bible never said this God creating sin or wickedness.,

    I agree in the strongest terms possible that to oppose God is to be fired. But I'm stuck on the passage in 1 Chronicles 18:18-22 where it seems to say that God made use of a deceiving spirit to, in effect, do His bidding. It appears he was indeed "employed". I would sure appreciate some help with this.
    18Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne with all the multitudes of heaven standing on his right and on his left. 19And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab king of Israel into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?’
    “One suggested this, and another that. 20Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will entice him.’
    “ ‘By what means?’ the Lord asked.
    21“ ‘I will go and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said.
    “ ‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the Lord. ‘Go and do it.’
    22“So now the Lord has put a deceiving spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours. The Lord has decreed disaster for you.”

    Well it depends on what you mean by "from the beginning".
    If you mean "were created corrupt". Then no. Nothing, not even the Devil was created evil. Everything was created good.
    However, that leaves open the question "when did they go bad" and one of the probable answers to that, based on traditional angelology, is that they went bad almost right away. In the beginning of their existence, they saw what part of God's plan was made available to them and in that moment they decided either "yes, I will serve the plan, and love" or "no I will not serve the plan".
    If we then ask the question "why would God go on and assign them roles in his heavenly court etc?" I would answer, because Angels (yes I know the term isn't entirely accurate) have freedom, just as we do. They must earn their condemnation, just as we do. Their choice was made, but they had not yet acted out their choices.
    Further, this also allows for human freedom. For if people are free to choose idolatry, then it is fitting that there be some other god to make an idol of. God consigns people to idolatry, because people chose idolatry. He gives them what they want.
    This is not to say that God purposed the fall of the angels, nor that he purposed man's idolatry. Rather it is to say, that God used both of those things to demonstrate his justice, mercy, etc. He uses the rebellion of those who hate him in order to give them what they want, and also to serve his plan.
    Regarding evil being on God's payroll... it depends on what you mean. God does not intend evil, but God does use the evil of rebels to serve his purposes.
    The Bible says that Satan was a liar from the beginning... Again, I don't think this means he was created as a liar, but that he went bad right away. Yet God, as Heiser points out in other lectures, still had him in the office of "Ha Satan" the accuser. He still came and went with Sons of God and was in Heaven.
    Likewise, later in the OT God makes use of a lying spirit. God does not lie. Lying is evil, but God made use of a lying spirit to fulfill his plan.

    Perhaps the passage that states " I create good, and evil" , in that He uses evil, for judgement, against who?, Against evil! Against itself.
    In Israel's case, their disobedience. As in all cases as such I would say. And yet evil assaults the seemingly "good". The tribulations of this world was promised. And yet all adversity does not come from evil exclusively. Or does it if we trace back to " The Fall ", Gen 6, and Babel. However, employing evil and using evil to the advantage of good, (after evil's insurgence on it's own volition), are two different matters, I would say.

    Where in the Bible does Dr Michael get the idea that God tasked the 'gods' to lead the nations? Psalm 82 pronounces judgement on the 'gods' for supporting evil men, but it does not imply they were tasked with leading the nations. You can be judged for sneaking in and messing a job you were not even given in the first place. Deuteronomy 32:8-9 just speaks of the nations being divided and their boundaries set. The idea that the nations were allotted 'gods' isn't there in those two verses. Is there any other scriptural references that I am missing?

    This is how I see things: Satan wanted to be his own god when he rebelled against God in Heaven. When God kicked him out of Heaven with the other fallen angels, God allowed Satan to deceive Eve in order to become the god of this world (that is, God didn't step in to stop Satan). So what is God's perspective on this? God was essentially saying to Satan and his fallen angels: "Fine, I'll let you have your wish: you can become the god over mankind. However, this means that you and your angels will be responsible for the well-being of mankind. And so, you will be forced to face judgement for each and every atrocity you commit against mankind." Essentially, since Satan and his fallen angels wanted to be gods, God is now testing them on their capacity to be gods.

      I think it's vice versa. God didn't decided Satan becomming the ruler over mankind but mankind chosen Satan's word as true over God's word finally making Satan becomming their ruler. God than sent his word in flesh and blood to save the lost.

    • @EndTimesHarvest
      @EndTimesHarvest 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Michael-wn4jj Even still, God did not step in to prevent Satan's plan to enslave mankind. God ultimately uses evil to serve good by proving how evil always leads to self-destruction. God wanted to prove Satan wrong for thinking that he could become like God, and so God allowed Satan to rule over mankind so he could utterly fail in this endeavour, ultimately proving God right.

      Not only Romans 1 but 2 Thessalonians 2 and we have God giving the beasts in Revelation 13 permission to conquer and kill the saints. So I think that perhaps at Babel God gave the nations what they wanted at Babel but in a regulated manner - isolating and limiting the boundaries of influence of each of the sons of elohim who were cheering the builders on at Babel and looking forward to the possibilities of reproducing after their own kind and fathering offspring - something they were forbidden but witnessed among humans and desperately wanted to experience for themselves.

      God controls everything, both good and evil. Some angels rebelled against Him, others so far as I can tell erred and were corrected (depending on if you take Zechariah 3 as an angel acting as an adversary to the high priest or Satan specifically) and the most angels act on behalf of God.
      As to the next question, why did God create the world with evil, you have to weigh, do you trust God and believe that He is attending over you? If so, then you can trust that God ultimately plans for good in a world that has evil. The world is not just what mankind perceives - God acts with knowledge that we don't have. Even so, I also believe, that if you ask God, He will satisfy your desire to believe in Him.

      As far as Isaiah 46:7, what are you struggling with ? It just seems like it’s comparing and juxtaposing idols which cannot “move, answer, or save” and God saying there is none like me.
      In verse 10 he says He will accomplish his purpose and verse 11 he says “I have spoken and I will bring it to pass”
      This is obviously very different then the idols which can’t do any of these things.
      If you read psalm 115, specifically verse 7 is hyperlinked in my bible, it’s very similar
      Thanks goodness for verse 13!
      To help Process them you can read them in their context, maybe a study Bible could help. If you download the logos app they have their faith life study Bible for free which is super helpful. I Also read different translations when studying.
