For MANY different reasons.. Eye injuries,. Age,. Medical conditions (cataracts),.. So you're using your Iris to create/manage/maintain the world coin,. and/or wallet, Digital ID,. etc,. sorta screwed if and when your Iris changes color/shapes...

Without a shared database of scans (BIG privacy issue) they can't insure one iris maps to only one key. As for open souring the orbs, the unique digital ID system would appear to depend on every orb strictly following the protocol, not being hacked to produce IDs for fake iris'. All of which isn't a problem for major existing cryptocurrency systems that have no problem with one person having multiple wallets.
