You should form a Model's Union, and establish standards and practices for the industry. Any good lawyer could help you set it up.

the problem is people like Bruce weber have so many friends and strong influence in the industry - he could end a models career with one phone call ..... and nobody likes people that 'complain' regardless of what they complain about ....some people would rather turn a blind eye ... unfortunately exploitation happens in many types of job

This is 100% true. I have experienced ALL of this! It's absurd to me. I left the modeling industry years ago because I just wouldn't put up with it. I'd much rather continue with my acting career. People say to me all the time I should be a model but then I tell them why I quit and they all say "well maybe it's your attitude." Standing up for myself is seen as an attitude problem? Sexual harassment is such a problem in the fashion world. I've been told I'm too short, too tall, too thin, I have bad teeth, I have bad skin, my legs are too thick, I should work out more, I should work out less, I should be manlier I should be more androgynous, I should have long hair, I should have short hair... Photographers have tried to touch me inappropriately, hit on me, placed their hands on me when there was no need to. And if I dare say anything, I would be dismissed. Thank you for this video! I'm on the same page as you Barrett.

The happiest people Alexander are themselves, as well people whom genuinely respect themselves respect others for whom they are. Good for you Alexander be proud and super happy with yourself as you are, the amazing difference's in people is so special. I think people in their 80's plus with lots of wrinkles from life experience is amazing I like to hear about their lives, their stories and wisdom they have.

I took a photography class recently and one thing our mentor really told us is to never harass a model, possibly don't even touch the model just give out instructions or show them the pose you want them to make and to always remember to be ethical and professional. Shame on those pervs.

PREACH!!!! This is exactly why I quit modeling some years ago! It was awful and made me feel like crap. I was too tall or too blond or too whatever. And the grabs or gropes were constant! It was like they were all trying to be fluffers on a porn set! Just because I am gay, does not mean I'm easy! Thanks so much for speaking out and trying to protect other young men and women from being taken advantage of!!!

It's amazing how little this is talked about. I have been modeling on and off since 2007 and experienced the best things and some nasty things. The second time I met with Bruce Weber (models will know who he is) I left crying. I was 19 and was mortified at his approach to get pictures. I knew the power he has on the industry but I chose to walk away from that opportunity of possibly booking the campaign. It was unprofessional and perverted. It happens to everyone who meets him at least who I have talked to. The thing that gets me is when I do events (modeling does not pay enough) he is always at the head table. Oprah did a event with Ralph Lauren a few years ago and he sat across from her. A women who's purpose is to help people does not see the disgusting person in front of her. The public does not see past the magazines and TV 😟 makes me wonder about everything else in the world we don't know about. Thank you for this video Barret

I am being fair. I am only pointing out one bad experience with one specific person. I start off with expressing that I have had some of the best experiences in my life from modeling. It is what you make of it. I did it for many years and now that I am 27 I know what is best for me. I know how to keep my body perfect for me. I know who I will work with and what I will accept. I know what is appropriate and not. Mathew Zinks team is top notch! They are professional, and that matters a lot when you are objectifying your package in a bikini breaf.

RJGula I don't think anything about my look other then knowing when I am healthy or not. I am a heterosexual married man. If I was not professional which everyone in the industry should strive for i would of beat a few homosexual men up for sexual harassment in my early years. I did not choose to do sexy pictures. I was told that's what I had to do. Exposure is what is sold. Exposure is bullshit but at 17 and 18 I did not know better. If I was gay I'm sure I would of enjoyed the business. I am not so comments like yours are disturbing but comments online are different then ones face to face.

    • @arubanman
      @arubanman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Clearly you have a agenda hear. You did not read my initial response. I praise profesionalism which is a major part of the industry. I don't mind portraying sexuality. It's a art, it's fake. When It's about the pictures and the job it's professional. When it's about someone's perverted fantasies which again I only pointed out 1 person. Bruce Weber is a predator. I have no issue with gay men. I have a issue with a gay man not respecting me being straight.

The 90's supermodel Michael Bergin spoke about the time Bruce Weber was coming on to him. The fashion and media darlings shut that down quickly and took Bergin down fast. They basically pretended that nothing happened due to Weber's tremendous talent and connections within the fashion industry. Another ugly side of male modeling.

I modeled for years in my youth and I had a hard time getting any work, because I too am a short model. Only 5' 9 1/2". Basically, you MUST be at least 6 feet and the first thing most places do before they even check your portfolio is what is his height. Especially at Wilhelmina. Sex on photo-shoots happens at lot too, there is little professionalism, especially on no pay shoots.

    • @vegassims7
      @vegassims7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Not on real professional shoots, but many times when getting started and doing free shoots to build up a strong portfolio, you get occasional characters who are doing it more for their self interest than to help you in your endeavors.

I admire your courage and bravery for being so open about some of the realities in the modelling world. I had no idea it could be so vicious. We as consumers are completely blinded by the reality of modelling and fashion as all we see are the glossy magazines and VS fashion shows and think "Wow lucky them" but I guess like the saying goes "She/he slept her way to the top" actually has a truth behind it but not in the slutty sense [as were lead to believe]…..they were forced to. The weight some people must carry on their shoulders…….and for what? Of course not everyone is bad but still no excuse.

Barrett you are so right about this. Many people think its all fun, glamorous and exciting but they do not know the dark side of modeling. I tried modeling myself in the late 90s and yes you do hear NO a lot. It does make you think and question yourself why are you getting rejected. I travel also a lot for go sees and it's not even guaranteed if you'll get picked. It is a really hard business and YES many times you work for free just to get that tear sheet from the magazine to give you more experience and exposure. I watched men's fashion shows in the early 90s and I've always wanted to model after seeing Cameron Alborzian, Michael Bergin, Markus Schenkenberg, and Mark Vanderloo on the runway. It just look so cool to wear those cool clothes and travel everywhere and get paid well. It seems interesting from that perspective but the reality of it, its really a jockpot.

u sound like a real soulless creeper fyi
so if someone is considered 'beautiful' by others... by birth, not by choice even... then they have NO RIGHTS??!!!!??
u r promoting unlawful discrimination, n criminal violations against human rights... (against people, n/or all living beings who happened to be born into beauty.)
so, according to your creepy, nonsensical insanity, if someone happens to b beautiful in appearance, they must forfeit all their rights; as creepy criminals have at them; have their way with them?!!? 'pretty people' must just stfu. not ever speak out, not ever stand up... for themselves, for one another, for justice, equality; for rights... against unlawful, criminal, violating, injurious injustice. 'pretty ppl' must accept n tolerate being raped, being molested, being harassed, stalked, tortured, tormented, taken advantage of, exploited, bullied, being wrongfully discriminated against for being pretty (in an UGLY as hell world...) being abused n traumatized, being mal-treated, their rights being violated... as tho a beautiful being does not belong to ones' self... as tho a beautiful being has no self; no boundaries; no rights???!!! as tho a beautiful being is not self possessed; as tho a beautiful being belongs to criminal predators; n does not belong to themself???!!! according to disgusting creeps like u... due to their 'enviable fortune' of being born into beauty... (beauty is not called a 'double edged sword' for no reason u dense, jealous, ugly as a demon, prick.) people of beauty; beings of beauty, must b mandated; dicktated; sentenced to just allow themselves to be chronically fucked over; fucked with; trampled; bulldozed; raped, molested, exploited, bullied, abused, tormented, tortured, wrongfully discriminated against, bribed, manipulated, threatened, taken advantage of, stalked, harassed, traumatized... unlawfully violated, n/or even all too often enslaved, n/or murdered; sacrificed... n cuz, u n those similar to u say, 'beautiful people r soooooooo lucky n blessed to b pretty; therefore they must just stfu, stay mum; b mute; stay quiet; eat shit n die; b miserable n unhappy, pretending they r happy with what??!! with their souls being crushed unlawfully by criminal predators??!! that they should just pretend they r happy n enjoying themselves... n just take all the ruinous; injurious criminal insanity being done to them... n know that they r so lucky, cuz they r pretty, n they have no right to even complain of crimes perpetrated against them, cuz they r pretty???!!! pretty people must just let the cannibals, vampires, parasites; malignant narcissist perpetrators, psychopathic, sociopath criminal predators... have at them; have their way with them; run them amok; injure n ruin them...???!!! n yet, still, according to u, pretty people, must always look pretty; must always maintain that pretty smile on their face... must submit into stockholm syndrome... must pretend to enjoy their oppressors... etc etc... says who??!! says UGLY as hell, loathsome, perverted, psycho-sociopathic, likely perpetrating, no doubt enabling... criminal... stanky, fly infested shit fer brains, nonsensical, insane, dumber than anyone ever thought possible... malignant narcissist, sicko creeps, such as yerself. u n those like u, r what r so horribly wrong of this world. u r an infected infection that is too much such an awful big part of the spiritually-psychologically ill-world problem. u r part of the problem; part of the dis-ease; of this sick world...
      FUCK OFF!!!
this is about lawful vs. unlawful behavior.
we a people have RIGHTS. ('pretty or not; pretty or ugly...' matters not...) u idiot, moron, coocoo, sicko, narcissist creep.
we a people must NOT be injurious-ly, unlawfully, criminally mal-treated, mis-used, abused, traumatized, trespassed, harassed, threatened, wrongfully black-listed, bullied, stalked, gang-stalked, bribed, manipulated, exploited, molested, raped, stolen from, taken advantage of, enslaved, sacrificed, murdered, wrongfully discriminated against, violated, unjustly perpetrated against, preyed upon by predators, etc etc... such unwarranted, unjust, unlawful, criminal, injurious, rights violating, abusive, traumatizing mal-behavior is UNACCEPTABLE; INTOLERABLE. we a people MUST band together in support of one another; taking a stand for our rights; for justice, and against injustice, unlawful discrimination, n criminal violations perpetrated against our people; n our rights.
      -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can totally relate to this.. It's really hard to take criticism from agents and casting directors, especially if they don't even give you the time of day. It's a tough career that isn't going to be mine forever, which scares me because I have no idea what I want to do career wise besides modeling. Nothing guarantees that you'll make it so it's risky not having a backup plan. Another of my concerns about the modeling industry is faulty agencies that abuse their clients. I recently signed with another one about a week ago but I'm still skeptical of how reliable it is. Anyways, thanks for making this video, it's great to have someone else explain this.

Become a force for change. Get your head into the business end, open your own agency, or work on setting up an advisory board, or focus on the legal side and go to law school. If you love modeling, make the industry better and more ethical. Be that positive force for change. No one is ever too old or too young to make a difference.

I'm a fashion designer, focus on menswear in L.A.. I'm not a big name, but once I do it's going to hit hard.
I've seen and work with lots of male models/actors. What you said about working for free, I call it TFP (Trade for Photos).
I always make it clear to the model that this is a collaborate project. Once they are on the set. I show them the highest respect
for even modeling for me for free. I make sure they are comfortable that my team, work and act as professionals. I feed them,
pay their parking, depending on some circumstances pay their gas in a location shoot. The models I've worked with usually do
call me back, because they love my designs, and the respect I give them. It's people in the fashion industry whether they
are lower and higher end that use their power to harass and take advantage of models whether they are women and men
that gives this industry a bad rap. I'm pretty much a rebel and I don't go by the fashion industries standards. Thank you
Barrett for discussing the bad side of modeling. For those who are wanting to model, please always approach it
as a business and as professional as possible. That way who ever you model for will see that.

Great video. It is so true. Modelling is really harsh, 99% of the models are experiencing the worse of the industry .Most of the public only know of the 1% top models where they got paid thousands, flying to Paris to do a Gucci shoot or whatever. Even in the higher level, models are often got paid by trade not really by money. And not to mention most models starts really young and they are surrounded by these adults who should be responsible for their action so it is super easy for them to manipulate models to do all these things. I think you should join Model Alliance they are great voice of models.

I just started watching your videos and let me tell you I have enjoyed every one of them. Stuff like this happens all the time every where at different levels. Thank you for educating the public especially those young guys or girls that might feel that modeling, acting, dancing, singing will make them happy. Some may tell you horrifying stories on how they put up, because they were young, poor, ignorant, innocent and that was the only hope to continue chasing their dreams. I'm guessing that modeling is an industry that attracts many less grounded guys whose self esteem derives from constant reassurance that they are attractive. How many plan for a different career, once the calls quit coming? At what age are male models 'has-beens?' I'm fascinated by those that go on to careers as photographers, film makers, actors, painters, designers, etc. How do you see your future?

That was very brave to speak out about this issue.. even though a lot of people don't speak about this issue, it hasn't been the first time I've heard it.. it seems like the modeling industry as well as the movie industry and Hollywood have this similar trend in taking advantage of people just trying to get a break and reach their dreams.. it's sad but will never be corrected unless people start talking about it and rules or laws are put into place.. congrats on trying to make a positive step towards improving the dark side of the industry xo

I use to model nearly 50 years ago. Yes, the industry surely takes advantage of younger and innocent people. Several times I was approached by famous entertainers, sports players, congressional folks and the list goes on. I thank you for the openness that perhaps others will understand and be prepared. The entertainment industry works well when it does yet most often does not. Blessings.

Thanks for speaking out about this, I thought I was the only one. So many people join the modeling industry because they seek validation, not knowing that the industry will have them fully confront their inner demons. Towns like LA have an exploitation system waiting to take advantage of young hopefuls. Luckily, I got out of it and found my self worth in the process before I was destroyed by it. Thanks for putting into words what I've always felt.

Coming from the other side of the fence, I honestly was finding it hard to dredge up emotion over the topic of this video... then I watched it. I have spent most of my life (pre-adult, and adult/gay) being made fun of and attacked because I have some extra poundage, and am not the nicest looking bulb in the pack. To this day, I don't go to bars... I have actually been insulted there by better looking guys (I tried an experiment 2 years ago, and was ostracized within 15 minutes by two guys next to me).
Having said all the... who knew I would have something in common with someone experiencing the opposite condition.
Good for you Barrett... the honesty is needed. Pox on the guy who said you are not attractive... I would be lucky to have an honest man no matter WHAT he looks like.

Many years ago I was what my friends called the MACYS Sunday Newspaper Supplement Model. Such models are certainly not in the big time, but we were treated professionally and we were always paid. I even appeared in a few MACYS holiday TV commercials (acting as if I was having the best time of my life in whatever clothes they were pushing). Not glamorous, but it paid some bills while I went to college. I had the look of that time period, knew it, but didn't want the total hassle of a hard hitting model career. I never would have had the temperment for what you have gone through. Thanks for sharing the reality of the hard hitting modeling world.

I just watched this video and I felt it was awesome, I loved the fact that you didn't hold back anything. Allowing people to be informed as to what they would have to encounter. Speaking out isn't as easy as it always looks, it means being put in a bad light at time. Regardless, it's not that I found some of the content to be shocking, to the effect that the bullying and exploitation and rampant sexual harassment in some agencies is common place , but to talk about it ends your career. It's good to hear from your experience that there is life after modeling, not all of it is bad and that no one should settle on bad business practices. Thank you for this video it opened eyes alot.

I had no idea, I mean I sort of expected that there would be some sort of hardship like this but the way how media is portrayed and how the models' social media seem like they're having reasonable happy lives (just by look of it of course), I realized that what you really see on those models' live styles on social media aren't everything. Thank you so much for sharing this and I can't believe the whole sexual harassment would be just beyond humiliation. You are amazing for doing this and thank you for being you. The truth is I really struggle with being pretty. I get tons of attention for it and not all of it is good. Everyone wants sex or a piece of me and it's exhausting. From creeps or people who just fall in love with me and just want to talk to me because I look pretty. When I was younger I'd shave my head and wear a hoodie just to stop people from staring at me when I walked down the street. I don't think people understand the price of being pretty. I guess I'm lucky to look the way I do but I attract a hell of a lot of bad energy too and people who just hate me because I'm attractive and think I'm a sex object. Men aren't allowed to talk about this so I'm glad you are putting this out there. I always loved Farrah Facett. I felt she was someone pretty who the world just took advantage of and got exploited and abused for it. I think it's so difficult as people want me to be something for them and then the pressure to live up to that is huge. I'm pretty therefore I have to be perfect and I'm not allowed to be anything other then what you want me to be. Anyhow thanks for doing this it's important stuff as so much of it is bullshit. I worked in porn and modelling made money at it but like you said it's not enough to live on. It's a great part time job that you can have fun with but seriously that's it. Enjoy the good people you meet along the way because there are good people but definitely protect yourself and your heart as there are lots of creeps out there too.

Thirty years ago I help and encouraged a very handsome friend get into modeling. He worked with some of the top people, spent years in Europe. Now is in his mid-60's and living in Los Angeles. He still gets commercials and hand-modeling gigs. What you say in your video are in line with much of what I have observed. He has had a fascinating life, but limited in some self-development ways. He never married or had kids. He lived high off the hog for awhile, then has had many years of struggle. He has a girlfriend who helps support him, but I don't think it's the happiest. After about 40 years, since I met him (before he was a model) we are still friends. At times I envied his glamorous life, but in those years I have finished college, worked as a high school teacher for 30 years, and have a secure retirement in my own house. I would not trade. I appreciate what you say in your video, and I know that my friend would agree with 90% of it, or more. All best wishes. Get out there and have a life.

Cool person you are, B. I remember my first booking in the 80's for a Cadbury commercial, and up to that point, my agents did not know I was gay. I had made friends with the makeup guy during the shoot and we were laughing, and my agents heard that I had tried to pick him up or something (I was not attracted to him, just nice finding someone to joke with on set that day) as it turned out the scene in 1988 was still very homophobic... especially with the casting directors! I was told to NOT be seen on the gay strip or in a disco - RIGHT!!!!! - as if a 24 yr old would NOT go out and try to have fun and maybe even fall in love! They were a 5 star agency that basically were a bunch of uptight bigots that would not get away with that today! In the end, you are a human who should not have to put up with ignorance nor be controlled by those who would stifle who you are just so they could sell you! Then the lead actor of the gig drunkenly puts himself all over me on the dance floor the next evening.... but that's another story! ( and not one he's proud of - alcohol affects many physical responses... hint, hint)
Barrett - here's a quote that applies to you - please take it as a compliment:

I KNEW there was going to be a sexual harassment thing. I wish I could say I wouldn't be that way but oh how tempting it would be to oil hot guys, etc. Actors and models are mistakenly thought to be prostitutes by many whether consciously or subconsciously because it's selling one's self. I used to be so upset at being fat and gay and then when I got into the Chub and Chaser community I got to see what the "Pretty people" go through. Never did I think I'd be in that situation as a fat gay dude. But I got a small taste of it and while it was so wonderful at first, I quickly started feeling uncomfortable as one guy after another just wanted to play with my belly and would barely look me in the face or treat me like a human being.

The entire fucking fashion industry is just so fucked up and full of hypocrites. I am still in the fashion industry very not willingly for some reason and there is no one moment I don't want to get out of this. Getting no pay, manipulation, excess work and bad tempers etc., you see all these shits happening everyday. One company that I used to work for free years ago, asked models to come in for casting, the director spoke exactly same compliments for all the models and told them you would be very probably chosen and then complained to us how ugly they were after they left. I got no paid to work even I was doing the job that the public relation manger did who left for holiday. It was not remotely entry level work and I also had to bear his fucking awful temper like a slave. Moreover, the income of low level fashion guys, like assistants in magazines, fashion companies is very disproportionate to their contritions but you cannot complain as they crave for that glamorous life, on the way to achieving it, they lose more than what they eventually get.

Very brave Barrett but let's be honest you took it pretty easy on the industry. The fact that you have to work for free in editorial shoots or free at all means your not a professional model you are a slave. A slave to a industry that preys on the young and naive and their mis-guided dreams. People are sold the glossy veneer of "being a model" but as you point out there is a dark underbelly that only insiders know about. When a plumber goes to a job at the end he gets paid. If you go to a job as a model and you don't get paid then your simply being USED.

The industry has been so corrupted and I don't see it ever being the way it used to be. Really so sad that you were treated like that. You are very brave to speak out.

Kudos to you for standing up to the industry. Even if you get no notariaty from this video, you are a better person for having spoke the truth! You are an inspiration to those who believe they want to get in this industry and don't know that these things go on. Good job!

This is awesome. More people need to speak out against injustices that need to be dealt with because it shouldn't have to happen to move your career forward. It reminds me of the one intern at a fortune 500 company that died after working 17hr days for three days straight, then Goldman Sachs saying that the interns can only work a maximum of 12hours a day. It boggles my mind because these are usually unpaid internships. Yes, the payoff in the end may be really amazing, but is it worth your health, your dignity, and your young life? If you are all for it then that's your business, but for me I need that balance between work and a social life.
