  • This short video showing a vintage razor I've recently bought from E-bay. The razor is a Gillette new (long comb) razor from the 1930's. Using hot soapy water to soak the razor for 10 minutesand then used an old toothbrush to give it refreshing up and loosen any residue from the razor. I removed any oxidation between the toothed comb and the sides of the base plate with a Stanley blades. Then I used autosol and some mutton cloth to polish and buff the razor up. I washed the razor again in soapy water to get rid of the polish,dried to with a paper towel,then finally left it in barbicide for 10 minutes,rinsed again and left it to air dry,ready to shave with.

    Cleaned up very nicely. I just gave away that same razor at the wetshave meet up. Great instructional video!

      Yes it do.It felt like I was cleaning away time and history.The person or persons who have owned this razor before I mean. I like the antique brass look,pity about the condition of the box.

      @@stephenmkeer I just got into vintage Gillette razors. Found a notched nickel 1940’s Superspeed for $20 in excellent condition. I was so impressed by the smoothness of the TTO mechanism I bought a 1959 Fatboy and two Slim adjustable’s. I’m on the lookout for a rhodium plated British TTO, probably an aristocrat. It’s hard to find in the US

      @@greg6162 sounds like you’ve fallen into the razor rabbit hole. You should look at the U.K E-bay site for a aristocrat,you never know unless you try. Good luck in finding one (or two). 👍

      @@stephenmkeer indeed… I just bought another Gillette 1946-47 unnotched gold Aristocrat. I think I’m done with vintage razors. I honestly have more vintage razors than modern at this point. I try to buy razors that fill a void such as the adjustable’s, however the vintage Gillette razors just surprise me with every shave

    Another great metal polish to use is Meguires all metal polish which was recommended by a fellow shaver (Kevy Shaves) which is safe on De razors I used it on my razors and the finish is great

    I suspected when you said you were going to straighten that bent teeth of the vintage safety razor I already know it will break off its very fragile should have just let it be.

    GUM brand makes a little interdental brush that looks like mini pipe cleaner. Would probably work well with some solvent to get in between the teeth and little parts.

    I won the bid on eBay for a Vintage 1962 Gillette Slim Adjustable Safety Razor H 3 Lot #1 and will use a nylon brush and a brass brush first and then use Flitz Polish on it, which is safe to use. I'll also put it through a few cycles in my ultrasonic cleaner.

    I have the 1930’s Gillette “NEW” LongComb bar handle . Great razor. And I recently got a 69’ Slim and 69’ black beauty. And when I was doing my normal tooth brush and dawn clean up, I took the paint off the number adjuster again 😅like I did when I got my Slim lol. I seen a video Matt put up where he used enamel paint with a toothpick.... that’s what ima do lol 💈😁✌️💈

    Those base plates on the old Gillette razors are cast brass so they are more fragile and prone to crack if you try to bend them.

    How much inc postage did it cost and a piece of string dipped in polish is effective for cleaning the ball end, put the head end of the handle in a vice or between your legs and take the string and move it side to side hard and fast for effective cleaning, Jock Stewart.

    • @stephenmkeer
      @stephenmkeer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The razor cost me £10.50 including the postage.The ball end part can be taken out of the end of the handle.

      Hi sorry about the comb breaking, as it is a brass finish i.e heat won't destroy the finish, it will be possible to have it reattached using silver solder a jeweller or model engineer will be able to do this, it is quite an easy job.
      Thanks for the great videos

      Can't straighten them. (cast brass) Live with it and have an INTACT, ORIGINAL razor. The bent corner tines do not affect the shave.
