  • I recently purchased a Gillette FatBoy off of an auction site and I recently received it and this video will show how I cleaned, sanitized and polished my vintage Gillette FatBoy safety razor. The Gillette FatBoy is a sought after safety razor and is an adjustable that allows the user to dial in the level of aggressiveness by selecting a setting on the dial. The Gillette FatBoy in this video is a G3 which means that it was manufactured in the 3rd quarter of 1961. Check out reviews for others opinions on this DE razor: badgerandblade....
A vintage razor will bring you many years of amazing shaving. The Gillette FatBoy is on of my favourite vintage razors to use. So when you get one, it is definitely recommended that you clean and sanitize the razor to avoid any possible contamination. It is highly unlikely that you would catch some sort of disease without cleaning, but why risk it?
This video was created to show How to clean and sanitize a Vintage razor, this also helps in sanitizing a razor. I feel that a vintage razor should be sanitize properly prior to use.
This is what I used to clean and sanitize a vintage safety razor:
    old toothbrush
    CLR
    Scrubbing Bubbles
    Rubbing Alcohol
    Silvo metal polish
    Dishwasher
The whole ordeal took me around 25 minutes not including the dishwasher. I took the advice from Matt from Razor Emporium and sanitized the razor in the dishwasher after watching one his video: • DIY How to Clean a Vin...
All in all the razor turned out to be in great shape the finish remained intact and superb.
    Thanks for Watching

I tried Bar Keeper's Friend cleanser and a old toothbrush and went to work on the finish. It turned out rather nice. Kept the original patina of the razor and did a great job at getting the oxidation off the handle.

Nice razor. I found a late 40's Gillette Milord this weekend at an antique show. Will be on the lookout for a Fatboy.

Still around? I may or may not be receiving my first Fat Boy, depends on bidding. I've been an avid straight razor user over the past 12 years. Recently I've been nicking myself and they seem to be adding up. I shaved with a DE and my GEM Junior. Nice shaves. I found a GEM with the dial open/close and commenced to cleaning it. I soaked it, should've used CLR but I used a wooden tooth pick to get the corners. In finish it, I polished it with Mother's and that gold SOB shines! Can't wait to use it. Good video, hope you're still around!

Have you found certain chemicals or techniques removing the black inset numbers from the adjuster dial? I'm trying to find one with the letters still crisp and don't want to accidentally remove the paint.

Just bought a G 1 fatboy, and I did the same thing. Soasked in 91% alcohol overnight. Then polished it with wading polish. I may send it to razor emporium to make sure it's up to scratch

Lighter fluid. It’ll take off any sticky substance from any solid surface. It’s the main ingredient in Goo Gone.

To get sticky residue off anything ... WD40, wait 30s-1m and scratch it all off easily. Then wash with soap/water.

Take it from experience never use any polishing product on any razor, all razors have electroplate coating witch is so thin you will regret it, that black stuff is you removing the plating,
Just soapy water and buff up with dry cloth ,if your looking for shine spend the money having it re plated.

And for getting sticker residue off, put a drop of olive oil in it, rub it over the entire sticker, and let it sit for a few minutes.
The residue will wipe right off easily.
Remember, work smarter, not harder. It's what separates humans from animals.

Andrea Zagra The number refers to the quarter of the year. "2" is the 2nd quarter, not the first.

Why not just take it somewhere that will autoclave it for you?

Save yourself brushing. Getting that razor shiningly clean inside and out is as easy as pressing a button. Safariland CLP, a rubbing alcohol bath, a hot water rinse, and a distilled water bath.

20-30 minutes is a little excessive. You don't need that long to kill germs.
