This film acted as a much needed break from all the emotional films I have been watching recently. So much fun! Just a classic sci-fi action-adventure with an incredible cast.

Gary Oldman commented that he did not enjoy this experience and just did it as a favor to Besson. He felt he didn't understand the script at all and lost interest pretty quickly on set and to this day, has never watched it.
Which is sad, because this film is one of my favorites of all time.

From what I remember, Luc Besson first came up with the concept of this movie as a teenager and he had the script lying around for quite a long time before he was big enough a name to get it done to the standards he wanted. It's based on pulp novels and Valérian and Laureline comics. You can very clearly see Jean Giraud and Jean-Claude Mézières style in the design. It holds up pretty well, though it's very French in some aspects

One of the absolutely awesome parts of this movie are the COSTUMES ... designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier ... one of the biggest fashion designers at the time. From Leeloo's "stripe outfit" to Ruby Rhod's leopard onesie ... and the Diva ... and Zorg's "head plastic" ... completely outrageous but not too unrealistic and they perfectly mix with the sets and the alien creatures.

I honestly expected him to be laughing very more throughout the movie, but he seemed to spend most of the time bewildered 😂 to be fair, my first time was probably the same...when you don't know what you're getting into, it's so ridiculous you don't know what it's trying to do.
I also found the singing part awesome, but the dance moves were so ridiculous, it's impossible for me not to laugh. But that sortof thing is why I love this movie!

It was funny and ridiculous at the same time. Deeply entertaining. I loved Farscape TV show (Australian!) and I found that program to have some of this kind of quirky, self-effacing humour, and what-if scenarios, which you only really get away with in sci-fi. Anyways, if you ever have time and inclination, you should check out Farscape. Great reaction!

George Lucas was a big fan of Moebius, a French artist known for his mind-blowing sci-fi artwork. Moebius had an amazing talent for creating intricate alien worlds and characters that were out of this world, and it really caught Lucas's attention.
Now, in the "Star Wars" universe, you can spot the Moebius touch. Those iconic speeder bikes and the way Tatooine looks - yep, they've got Moebius written all over them.
Fast forward to TFE, a movie directed by Luc Besson. Guess what? He was also a huge Moebius admirer, just like Lucas. When you dive into that film, you can't miss its unique visual style with futuristic cityscapes and wild settings. That's where Moebius's artistic mojo shines through.
Lucas and Besson took Moebius's art and put their own spin on it, making their movies stand out.
Also, TFE takes the term "futuristic fashion" to a whole new level. The costume design by Jean-Paul Gaultier is nothing short of iconic. From Leeloo's iconic white bandage-like outfit to Zorg's flamboyant and eccentric style, the fashion in the film is a wild and imaginative mix of futuristic and eccentric. Gaultier's designs seamlessly blend high fashion with a quirky, avant-garde edge, creating a visual spectacle that complements the film's otherworldly setting. TFE isn't just a sci-fi flick; it's a fashion show of the future, and it's one of the reasons the movie continues to be celebrated for its creative and memorable style.
I'm glad you liked it! I still remember watching it when I was a little kid in the cinema. Totally not appropriate for me at that age but no one cared, lol. One of my favs of all time.

No. You're just keeping enough attention free to "be on" for the camera that you are not allowing yourself to be swept up into the story, which this movie was made to do. It comes from a time before Hollywood's idiotic decision to make all movies "realistic". Remember the three military people in the fridge? No they didn't die, because it's heightened reality, not actual reality.

I was referring specifically to the chase scene in this. IT’s resemblance is uncanny to the scenes in the Star Wars prequel chase in attack of the clones. I imagine George Lucas may have been paying homage to The fifth element here. It is possible for filmmakers to take inspiration from newer works.

@@thecocoacouch that would be funny, to have Lucas do homage to this. I love this movie, but it's hardly an influence over people like Lucas. I would see him being more influenced in this aspect by Blade Runner (1988), Brazil (1985), or even as far as Metropolis (1927). The Fifth Element might be influential in it being a very funny Science Fiction movie.

Yes I always thought that the scene in which Anakin jumps out out of the speeder in AOTC was inspired by this movie.

@@thecocoacouchWatching the video I thought you meant the design of the city, and Coruscant showed up in theaters 3 months before The Fifth Element, as part of the Return of the Jedi SE.
But yeah, the chase in AotC is very similar.

I would never place the high acting caliber of Bruce Willis with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold is a fairly low caliber actor who couldn't even disguise his own accent which speaks volumes of how basic his acting was. The only thing that stopped Willis from acting was his own gullibility on taking those poison vaccines.

I don’t mean acting ability 😆 also just saw the sixth sense which displayed Willis’s range and dang he’s good!
