Paul and Brutal are just about my favorite two men in any movie. They’re wise, honorable, kind, formidable, and they both have earned the respect of those around them.
Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan became close friends filming Green Mile. Sadly , Michael died in 2012. Tom wrote and read the eulogy at his funeral.
Earlier in the movie it was said that no one knew where John came from. It was said he seemed to have just dropped out of the sky. John Coffey shared the same initials as another.

Mr Cocoa Couch, I paused this reaction 24 minutes in, so I could type this while it is fresh in my mind. I have seen this movie, and I have seen plenty of reaction videos to it. Yours is either the sincerest and moving, or at least in the top 2 reactors that I have seen. This movie moved me again, almost as much as my first viewing, seeing it again, through your eyes. His reaction when Mr Jingles got stomped by Percy. So genuine and such a traumatizing moment.
John comforts the guards as they’re taking him to be executed with a story about a dream he had. He laughs and carries on about it down the mile all to distract the guards from their grief. Amazing adaptation, amazing screen writing, amazing acting. There’s nothing else like it. Thanks for the reaction.

I loved how you mentioned how empathetic and kind the guards are to the prisoners, trying to at least make their last moments in life better. This movie really shows how Stephen King portrays how people can be the worst sort of monsters (I'm talking about Percy more than the other prisoners). This is one of his best adaptations. I also recommend The Shawshank Redemption.

The Green Mile is about redemption, and how those who are on death row who though they have done evil things, we should realize that some of them can be redeemed prior to paying for their crime. Yet, it is also about empathy, and how we cannot be so hard hearted as to be cruel. But, really it is about so much more...it is about the human condition as a whole...Paul (Tom Hanks) says it in the end, " I think about all the people I've loved, now long gone. I think about my beautiful Jan, and how I lost her so many years ago. I think about all of us walking our own Green Mile, each in our own time."...The Green Mile represents our long walk to death, and passing over to where ever or what ever we go to next in our journey, and what we go through along that long walk on our own "Green Mile".

Also, apparently, Del raped a girl, and I think accidentally killed her and to hide the body, he set a fire which caught to another apartment building and ended up killing a few people including 2 children.
Even knowing this, I still cried for him. He was obviously on the spectrum and had he gotten the help he needed, he wouldn't have gone down this road. And it just breaks my heart.
This movie is just top notch! Also hurts more now that Michael Clarke Duncan passed away 💔🙏🏼

Trust me, Percy knew how evil it was to not soak the sponge, he was getting back at Dale for laughing & humiliating him for pissing his pants.
He knew it was evil but you can tell afterwards how surprised he was at just HOW evil it was.
Percy knew not soaking the sponge was going to be more painful death for Dale, but he definitely did not expect it to be as bad as it was. So, Percy's shock at the whole situation was genuine. Not trying to justify his actions btw

2) Gary Sinise (the man sitting on the porch of the house talking about John Coffey) was the second movie that Gary did with Tom. The first one was Forest Gump, the second one was this one and the third was Appollo 13. In the scene where Lt Dan shows his new legs (titanium same as the shuttle), gives a hint of Appollo 13. 3) Some may not be too religious, but if you notice, John Coffey's initials are JC ... coincidence?
4) When Belinda asks where did John get his scars, he doesn't remember, but some have said that since there was no record of him before the girls' incident, that he may have gotten his scars from the days of slavery.
5) The movie where Paul loses it at the beginning and again, near the end when John is watching it, is the classic movie Top Hat, with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing to the song Cheek-to-Cheek.
I always get a kick out of Wild Bill's (Sam Rockwell) drinking the cup of Royal Crown with the sleeping pills dissolved in it; Bill lifts his pinky finger like he was from high society or something. To me the most poignant line is John's last one: "I'm sorry for what I am"; Del said, "I'm sorry for what I do."
I am happy you kept Del's words of praise to the guards in the reaction. It is such a humble and quiet scene, yet it has such an incredible impact.

I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen this movie, but I've only now had this thought: if John infected Paul and Mr Jingles with life, how long was John alive?
Hundreds of years in the book
Paul was 44 the year John Coffey walked the Green Mile (1935) which means he was born in 1891. So, in '99 Paul was 108 and Mr Jingles was 64 or 65 years old. A pet mouse in captivity has an average life expectancy of about 4-5 years... makes you wonder how long Paul will live, eh?! Several hundred years probably. And his penance is to lose everyone he loves, to outlive them all.
Since the lockdown, I've been watching quite a lot of reaction videos. You're actually pretty good at it. I'm sure your channel will grow if you continue, and good luck with that. Speaking only for myself, I'm interested much more in movies than in TV series and hope that once it a while you'll do an older movie. There are a lot of good ones.
I love the way Paul says, “May God have mercy on your soul.” Because you can tell he wasn’t truly saying it to John, he was referring to himself when he said that

Not knowing the crime of Del helps viewers empathize with him. I wish they gave us that info in the movie because his death mirrors his crime. Still felt for him though.

I read the Stephen King novel before the film was made. The backstory on each of the deathrow inmates is riveting. John Coffey's attorney said that prior to John's arrest, there was no record of his existence, "It's as if he dropped out of the sky," (which, in a sense, this is true).
UTI infections were not easy to treat in depression-Era 1930's. Penicillin was not available until after WWII.
If this and others, like Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, don't prove how Stephen King is a US national treasure, a modern-day Poe, then I don't know who is. This came out in chapter books, like The Pickwick Papers, and I eagerly awaited the next installment.
Michael Clarke Duncan has played an assassin and crime boss in other films. The contrast with saint-like John Coffey shows a bit of his acting range.
He was also a bouncer at the club in "Night At the Roxbury."
John is always obeyed. It's easy to miss as he's so soft spoken and polite. If he'd wished for a different outcome he could have made it happen. He's also probably very old. He has scars on his back that suggest he was beaten with a whip as a child. But when was he a child?
As for swearing in the Southern US-its best not to until you've picked up when it's appropriate. Don't swear in front of older folks at all. Disregard anyone you may hear doing it. They weren't raised right.
7:24 Back in 1935 there wasn't the vast array of antibiotics available today. In a case like this, you could either wait it out and hope it would clear on its own, or take sulfa tablets, which had horrible side effects.
The guy who played Percy was a sick creep in real life too. He married a 15 yo girl when he was 50. 😠

I don't remember my exact tendency when I first saw this movie a long time ago, but I was quite emotionally repressed in general when I was younger, especially when watching movies with other people. But on the other hand, when I saw "Inside Out" in my 30's... THAT one noticeably broke me, after decades of not getting very affected by movies. A few years after "Inside Out", my emotions got another sneak attack by "Interstellar". Few more years after that, a re-watch (20 years after I first saw it) of "The Land Before Time" triggered the most intense cry of my LIFE. Seven month after that, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" triggered equally intense sobbing (after the movie, when the wheels in my head started turning).
I loved your reaction to this movie. This is one of the movies that I seek out the reactions to, because it is such a phenomenal film. Everything was so well thought out and crafted. Every actor gave the performance of a lifetime here. Even Percy's actor. It takes talent and skill to portray someone who is so evil and petty, yet seems like a real person, not a caricature.
Michael Clarke Duncan was, beyond, unbelievable in his role as John Coffey. He deserved far more recognition than he did for his role here. The reason I watch reactions to this film is because I don't think I can stomach watching it again, in it's entirety, by myself, and watching with people like you lets me feel like I'm watching it with someone new.
Please keep up the good work and keep reacting. There are a lot of good films out there to enjoy.

Have you seen The Sixth Sense? All these movies are GREAT movies. Keep up the great reaction. There was a 7 part mini-series from Australia in 2015 (I think) called Gallipoli, have you seen that? It's great.
After Hours is one of my ALL TIME favourite movies.

I'm watching you watching the Green Mile. The reason Paul was not interested in seeing the doc about the urinary infection, was because they couldn't do much back then. Penicillin wasn't available until after the war. They had sulfa based drugs that made you almost as sick as your original illness. Most people back then had to power through an infection, or, they just died of it.

If you're up for additional intense emotion (BUT with some positives mixed in, too), if you haven't seen it already, you might want to try "Inside Out". That movie MOST surprised me... after a long 30 years of not getting very surprised by a movie!
"Inside Out" is animated (Pixar) but if you'd rather have a live action one... I'd suggest "Interstellar" if you haven't see that one yet.
"I couldn't help it" Like you couldn't stop yourself. "I tried to take it back, but it was too late..." But you have to understand the language of the land and how he talks.
Beautiful reaction. I believe john was alive for hundreds of years as you said, and those scars on his back and arms were the remnants of his life as a slave, but he’s lived so long he can’t remember where they came from when the lady asked, “ where did you get those scars”? That’s so sad.
You need to react to the movie Misery from 1990 starring Kathy Bates, for which she won an Oscar btw. Also a Stephen King novel originally, like this one, and Shawshank Redemption.
The Movie is actually missing the "worst" part of the book.
After Johns death, Paul and his wife are in an excident... He is holding her corpse, while shouting Johns name.

This is THE film that made me fall in love with movies and acting. The scene between Paul and John talking about his judgement day is one scene in cinema that will always stay with me. The conviction, the brokenness, and just the understanding between the 2 was so felt.

There is a documentary, made by the production company (Warner or 20th Century); I recommend it. It includes how they worked with the mouse. The mouse doesn’t really roll the spool. It was difficult getting what they had to!

Not for nothing, but don't spend TOO much energy sympathizing with the Cherokee or the Cajun; they BOTH committed horrendous, brutal crimes and earned their seats in "Old Sparky".

2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie".

5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (MCD)😇 and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.😭😭

Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse: The Langoliers. Patricia Clarkson played Margarat White in King's remake of Carrie". Needless to say, it was a much different part.
7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. I know it' just for the movie because of the length of the execution scene.
8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegan and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but
was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill.
9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of playing Percy.👌EVERYONE hates him.
10. John also rescues the other patients at Briar Ridge.
11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clark Duncan (RIP). They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography to make John taller.
12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution, they used a real mouse, and it pooped on Paul's shoulder, and he brushed it off.
13. Now we know what the "day old is fine" dry toast is for.
14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced.

I think John actually transmitted the vision of what Wild Bill had done to Percy while he was scrambling his brain with those gnats - note that Percy was crying as he fired the gun. In this way, he made Percy do the right thing and punish someone who was actually bad.
I think it was actually just John Coffey in control of Percy, and John crying. I doubt Percy would have cared that Wild Bill raped and murdered the girls.
When they were filming the scene where John cures Paul of his urinary tract infection, Michael Clark Duncan didn’t feel right having to grab Tom Hanks’ penis. So, Tom went and got an empty water bottle and filled it about Two-thirds of the way full and put it in his pants so MCD could grab it and not feel bad. These actors are just as nice as the characters they play.
The scene when Mr. Jingles was given to John while Mr. Delaquois went to die, he had put Mr. Jingles on Tom Hanks’ shoulder and Tom walks him over to John so John can hold him until it was over. You see Tom wipe his shoulder because his uniform has to always be clean. He actually did that because Mr. Jingles has pooped on his shoulder for real! Tom handled it well!
I'm not sure what happens with Percy and Jhon, at first I thought jhon like directly sent Percy to kill that awful guy, then I thought he gave him the disease but why Percy would kill the baby killer? And then the best answer I have is that by giving him the flys Percy explicitely saw what that man did and couldn't help it so that made him kill that other guy and end up traumatized for watching what he had done to those girls.
Anyway, great reaction I always cry seeing this movie and the reactions aswell.
The Green Mile Prison is based on Angola in Louisiana, and they do say “Dead Man Walking.” In fact, there’s a movie of the same name starring Sean Penn.

My two most hated villains in all of cinema: Percy Wetmore and Dolores Umbridge
Now you can imagine how Jesus felt, and HE was savior of the world, and they executed him .
The Green Mile is my favorite film. Every aspect was done to perfection and even after so many rewatches I still get emotional. An absolutely amazing movie.

First time I watched it was a dvd rental (yeah, back in the day), and I was sobbing uncontrollably after the movie. It was the first time any movie had affected me so. I think there was only one other movie that affected me like that and it was My Sister's Keeper. But this was a great movie, and I've watched it again and again. This was a great reaction and I'll hope to watch more of his other ones. Thanks for a good watch.

@@sathvamp1 I think we get sappier the older we get...8-) Inside Out did the same to me come to think of it. Just that simple melody of a memory will already start to stir things up in me. I think also, if I watch a movie by myself, especially in these past few years, I 'get' to be freer with my emotion. But if I watch something in a theater...who knows what might happen now. 8-)))

And yes, I hear you regarding feeling freer with emotions when watching something by oneself. I saw "Interstellar" by myself, BUT during that "first-in-a-long-time" incident with "Inside Out", while I CAN say it "broke me", since I was watching with two friends at the time, I actually put in a TON of effort to NOT shed tears in front of them. But it was actually SO difficult to hold back, it actually felt like it hurt my brain, lol! In fact, if I could go back in time and make the decision again, I don't think I would have cared that much about holding back :P Never in my life had it been SO hard to hold back expression of emotion during a movie, so I found that by itself surprising.
Even MORE surprising was... a bit after the movie was over, I realized I was craving MORE tearjerker movies (which was also historically NOT like me to want). After a bit of research I concluded that probably a ton of feel-good brain endorphins likely got released in conjunction with the "almost-crying" event... which could account for the "wanting more of that" feeling, lol!
@@giannag4581 I can't speak for Codametal if you were asking them, but in my case:
It was only until about a year ago that I saw Schindler's list myself... so yup people have all different movie experiences (or lack thereof) at certain ages :) Also, in my case, it's actually inconclusive whether or not Schindler's List would have made me cry upon a totally UNSPOILED first-time watch... because I am sorry to say that I had seen far too many reactions prior to giving it a full watch on my own. And in my case regarding expressing tearful emotions, I get desensitized VERY easily if I first see shorter, out-of-context clips in the form of movie reactions.
Similarly, if any given movie does trigger tears upon a first-time watch, I have not yet found a movie that has done it a second time (with the exception of a 20-years-later re-watch of The Land Before Time; in that case I guess my emotional brain had re-set itself!)
Be assured though, I did soon learn my lesson (in terms of at least trying to watch the FULL movie on my own FIRST, before watching any reactions to it). For example, I am intentionally NOT watching reactions to "Balto", "The Adam Project," "Grave of the Fireflies" etc... before I see those on my own.
I still haven’t seen this movie but…I know of it….oh god it still pulls at my heart. RIP Michael Clark Duncan

First time on your channel. Nice reaction to an amazing movie. Subscribed. As for additional quality film recommendations, I would suggest "Arrival", an excellent movie with a great cast, led by Amy Adams (Best Actress-National Board of Review), Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker. Also, "The Shawshank Redemption" another Stephen King story, also directed by Frank Darabont.
Can you imagine Percy in charge of mental institution patients, especially having seen how he acts to the death row inmates?
Just blows your mind when you think you're watching a dramatic movie about death row and the prison inmates then... BAM you're hit with a dramatic movie with supernatural undertones! Stephen King...the best storyteller ever even though he's mostly known for his horror stories.
It was supposed to be an administrative job, not one caring for patients.

"Can someone not just shoot him?" No, they can't. At the time there were only a couple ways a person can legally be executed. Shooting them was not one of them. If one of the guards shot Del, even if it was to put him out of his misery and to expedite things, that guard could be charged with murder and open himself as well as the prison up for a major lawsuit. And since there was a death warrant, they legally couldn't stop the execution either.
Exactly, in their words at the beginning of the executions, "electricity shall now be passed through your body until you are dead."
Dammit. 5 minutes in and my tears are going. This is one of those movies you want to rewatch, because it's so damn good. But when you're watching it you remember how much it tears your heart out.

Fun fact: Percy Wetmore is among the most hated of Stephen King's characters. He is cruel for fun. He is everything that makes a human being evil.
And the actor playing him is equally detestable.

Maybe John IS an angel. "like he dropped out of the sky" and the halo like effect around his head during the flicker show and he said "they is angels, just like up in heaven". He said Casiopiea looked like an angel. He doesn't like the dark - a metaphor for being away from the light of God? However, angels cannot heal. But still, he may be quite old due to...what he has. He had scars and no record, so maybe he was around since the days of slavery or even before. He mentioned that things were similar "all over the world", so who knows. He may also have "the shining" like in the story of the same name or Mr. Brautigan (?) from Hearts in Atlantis, basically one with the gift like those who are sought out to be used as breakers for the Dark Tower. IDK, so many things about this movie make it my favorite movie, and it makes me think a lot. I read the book two or three times, and it has the same affect on me. There are many on my list but this is number one.
So, a guy named Paul tells a story about a miracle man named J.C. - who is an empath, a seer & has a gift for healing and then dies for someone else's sin after blessing people with LIFE...

Great movie. Oscar I would strongly recommend "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner", Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. Spencer's last film, he passed two weeks after the film was completed.

Paul was 44 the year John Coffey walked the Green Mile (1935) which means he was born in 1891. So, in '99 Paul was 108 and Mr Jingles was 64 or 65 years old. A pet mouse in captivity has an average life expectancy of about 4-5 years...
makes you wonder how long Paul will live, eh?! Several hundred years probably. And his penance is to lose everyone he loves, to outlive them all.
King is known for his horror but I love his dramas. Dolores Claiborne and The Shawshank Redemption are both also really good. I highly recommend them if you haven't seen them.
Although it's one of my absolute favorite films, I can't watch it too often. It's taking me hard. Not just because I am a staunch opponent of the death penalty. I myself work in a prison in Germany. A prison hospital for, among other things, mentally ill inmates, set up in an old fortress. We would certainly make an excellent location for such a film ourselves. That's why I know very well that as a guard there you come into contact with countless people and their fates. Usually over many years. In this environment I realized - although I had thought so before - how much one bases one's view of other people on what one knows about them. The society out there only judges such people according to their crimes if they become known. But when you work hours with these people every day, the picture changes. I'm not saying that all inmates are secretly good people, but perhaps it's not an exaggeration to say that there's more to a human being than a black-and-white perspective. A much larger part... is gray.
I agree, based on over six years experience as a detention officer. Unfortunately, while we didn't have a Percy, some officers were unnecessarily unkind.
I love this movie... I think it should be required watching for all ... honestly. It's a beautiful movie.
every time I watch this movie I always think that Dabbs Greer's (older Paul Edgecomb) voice sounds more like David Morse (Brutal) instead of Tomb Hanks's Character (young Paul Edgecomb). Great movie though. just a bunch of top quality actors!
