Hi Josh, I want to compliment you on this video because you manage to explain in a simple way how to really apply a LimeWash product. I think I can say this with knowledge since I am the formulator of the product you used in the video.
Oh wow that’s amazing! Thank you so much for the compliment! I do want to make a follow up video to this with some more info on things like sealing it. I want to lime wash the bathroom of my home. I saw first hand this beautiful, and ancient way of painting walls after visiting Morocco and Egypt. Talk about an inexpensive, beautiful, and easy way to finish a wall. Thank you. Great instructional.
I love the result. I really liked the fact that you used photos at the beginning for a visual and the details after. Worth watching. Nicely done. Thanks
Really thank you very much! I’m going to be applying this process on exterior stucco columns and front door casing. I have been painting for over 30 years and you learn something new every day, really appreciate it thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks for your comment! I’d recommend doing some extra research before you start. If it’s exterior stucco you may not need to prime at all (and if you do choose to prime first, you should use lime or mineral primer). Good luck with your project!!
Watched this video before I started a big lime wash job for a customer, chosen by their interior decorator. Although the product I used was different, pre-mixed & was a lot thinner, these tips were super helpful.
You’re a great teacher! I’m trying to decide one of three options 1. Lime wash entire room with one wall behind my bed in one color and remaining walls in a complimentary color 2. Lime wash only the wall behind my bed in a deeper tone and use regular paint on remaining walls in complimentary color. 3. Lime wash all bedroom walls in one lighter neutral color.
Thank you so much! I think no matter which way you go, it’ll come out awesome! My vote would probably go with either one color for the whole space! I think it really would make a beautiful canvas for the space for you to accent with furniture and decor. I think it’s enough of a feature that you don’t need to squeeze in 2 different colors. Just a thought! Good luck with your project!
Thank you so much fir sharing all of this information with us! I’m new to lime wash painting and feel ready to move forward and inspired. I have a 1905 Victorian and the walls I’m lime wash painting are original horsehair plaster and I think they will look perfectly imperfect AMD beautiful when done.
Oh wow that sounds amazing! I am so thrilled that I could help share some info and inspiration. And I would absolutely love to see how your space turns out too! I’ve never applied limewash to a plastered wall so I’m curious how it will turn out. I also wonder if you may need a different type of primer?
Thank you for the detailed explanations and expertise on everything. I’ve always wondered how this was done. I’m going to try this at my house. Love how it turned out. Your really good at this.

Lime Blueing and I think pink cement. We called it white wash. Used it like 52 years ago as a 9 year old in Arizona. It was for the outsides of stuco type homes.
Do you have to paint your walls a base colour before adding the lime wash? My bedroom walls are dark blue and I want my lime wash colour to be more of a beige undertone. Should I buy white paint to have first and then primer and then Lime wash?
Excellent learning video. You're really detail in explaining and showing the steps in different angle and view throughout the process. I find it 100% helpful and practical. Thanks!
How exciting and wonderful. Just what I’ve been wishing I knew.....Thought it could only be achieved painting on plaster, and didn’t know how AND didn’t have plaster walls anymore, lol! I’m so excited about possibilities!
If your walls are either masonry, or (in old and historic homes) you may find that under your acrylic is..... lime plaster and/or limewash paint! These walls do not need primed...BUT - if there is color, such as various color layers of old lime paint, you'll need an extra coat or two to cover up the old color. I also added salt to my limewash to eliminate the chalky rub-off that will happen with lime-washed walls. Concrete/mortar colorant is an easy and inexpensive way to color your paint. i have done yellow/beige (needed more coats), gunmetal grey, and red-earth colored walls. If you take a painted sample (cardboard or wood) into the paint store, you can match it to acrylic paint on the other walls. In bedrooms, I painted the outside (lime plaster over brick) walls with lime paint, and matched the color with acrylic paint on the interior walls. On a rainy day your lime paint on an outside brick wall will sprout dark patches before drying out again. Don't worry - this is the natural way your wall will dissipate the moisture. This is also why some plaster walls in Europe have stood for hundreds of years - effective moisture dissipation.
Josh, you did a great job with the limewash paint technique. You make it look so easy, but I would be scared to do it for fear it would look like a 5 tyear old painted it! Oh my gosh.Perhaps I will give it a try in my small bathroom and see how is looks. Thanks for sharing!
If it’s stone you should’nt have to. That’s assuming it’s unfinished. But mineral primer wouldn’t hurt For more specifics I’d reach out to the manufacturer directly
Really liked your video. Makes me feel like I could really do this myself. Love the result. I have an old house with lots of imperfections on the walls and I think this would work well to help hide them. Thanks
I used a very light colour and the cloudy effect wasn't too strong, to be honest I can barely see it. Do you think this is because of the shade of the paint was too light? Thanks
Yes! I would definitely recommend using a sealer if you’re painting in a room prone to getting dirty or getting splashed on with water. So for all bathrooms and kitchens especially it’s a must! I didn’t originally realize that sealing it was an option right away. I’m working on an updated limewash video to dive into sealing and some others things I may have missed. But I do have limewash in my living area that is not sealed and hasn’t aged a day or gotten dirty etc. So in my opinions you can definitely get away with not using one if it’s in the right space. Hope that helps!
Hey Josh, this is awesome! We’d like to do this in our office but have some questions before we get started. Does it matter if our walls are currently textured and painted? Would we need to sand to a smooth surface and then prime? Or can we apply this limewash directly to the walls? Also, how do you think I should transition this limewash on a wall that goes fully around the room? I don’t want to do the whole wall, just a part of it. Thanks in advance!
Hey! I answer all of those questions in my FAQ follow up video. You should check it out! (Link: th-cam.com/video/gJGUuou-QKM/w-d-xo.html ) As far as how to do it, I think either do the whole space or pick one feature/accent wall to apply it to. Good luck with your project!
I might have missed this but is the limewash mixed with a grey color or is it naturally that color? I really like what you did here -- I'm trying to make my drywall look more like concrete and I think the limewash looks like a close match, color and texture-wise.
Hey there! The color is natural! The easiest thing to do in my opinion is to look online at Home Depot they have colors ranging from white to gray to tan (only available online). There are some companies that do specialty colors if you want something different. But it sounds like you want neutral/gray which (thankfully) is the easiest color palette to get ! I would love to see how your project turns out! And please let me know if I didn’t answer your question or if you have any more 😊
Thank you! Yeah you should be able to paint right over it. If you’re renting the only thing to be mindful of I would say is that there may be a bit of physical texture if you mix your limewash and it’s too thick. In that case you may want to sand down those areas before painting over. But if you buy your limewash ready-made from a company you definitely won’t have any issues. Hope that was helpful!
Hey Josh - love this. Can I paint an acrylic mural over the limewash? If so, anything I should know that might be different outside of painting on latex acrylic indoor paint?
Hey there! I don’t have much experience with painting over limewash but I did some research for ya. In general to paint over limewash you can either opt for a chalk based paint that will go on no problem, or apply a primer over the section you want to paint a mural on. I would keep in mind if you don’t want the texture to come through onto the mural I would sand that area down first. Another option I found is to buy an alkali-resistant surface conditioner. You can apply that on the area the mural will go and that should help any non-oil based paint show up better on limewash. Hope that helps! I would personally recommend trying this out on a small (preferably out of view) section to experiment. And if you like the results you can go forward and if not you can sand down the spot and cover it up again with limewash all over. Best of luck!
I have a friend who did it in his rented apartment. But I would say it can be a risk of not getting your security deposit back, so be careful! I don’t know what the best or perfect removal method is. But I would imagine you can just sand down your wall after to get the texture off and then paint white back over it when it’s move out time. That’s my best guess anyway. Sorry wish I could be more helpful!
Hey! I wanted to surprise my mom with an accent wall but she recently plastered the wall to get rid of the popcorn-like texture. Would you recommend I still do this?
If it’s a textured plaster and you like the finish maybe just leave it alone. But if it was plastered over with a smooth, finish and there’s no color variation/texture I think it would still be a great idea! Since it’s not drywall I would skip the acrylic primer. And for best results I would buy a lime or mineral primer
wow you were super helpful and detailed more than the actual brands who sell limewash. so that for that beyond thank you

But if it was plastered over with a smooth, finish and there’s no color variation/texture I think it would still be a great idea! Since it’s not drywall I would skip the acrylic primer. And for best results I would buy a lime or mineral primer
