Just FIY for those wondering, this is not Tadelakt. Tadelakt is an eco-friendly, extremely labour intensive finishing that is commonly used in Morocco and historically in Europe where natural plaster is polished with a stone. I know, it sounds crazy! I believe what is used here is a "modern" version of Tadelakt, that can be easily bought. Unfortunately not eco-friendly :)

Lots of companies make eco friendly tadelakt from the same minerals they were made of way back when.
Did you talk to him and find that out or is it a guess in your part?

Yes! I’ve been searching TH-cam for ages having no idea what these style of bathrooms are called … I was inspired by what I saw in Greece on the islands , this smooth natural finish in interiors and particularly bathrooms. My own bathroom that came with the apartment I bought is an awful IKEA tile thing that I want to self renovate and your video has just given me the first glimmer of hope that it is possible. I have a lot to learn … I’ve got as far as ‘how to remove tiles’ but I need to also demolish part of an internal wall and get everything ready for this Greek rendering style. I’ll subscribe and look at the rest of your vids. Thanks !

The name Tadelakt refers to the traditional, moroccan application technique of a specific lime mortar.
I am wondering if it is the same technique used in Greece ?

The most common issue people have with this shower system is mold in corners or areas that constantly have standing water. Please keep us updated, and let us know if any issue arise. Great job, and Thanks!

      1) Tile floor first (slope appropriately)
      2) Some companies are suggesting a reveal between vertical and floor (capillary break) sealed with bathroom caulk
      3) Lime-based plaster as opposed to gypsum or other
      4) properly seal finish and reapplication every few months (no harsh bathroom cleaners)

We just did our shower like this!!! It’s sooo beautiful! We loved the dark so much we didn’t mix as much the last layer and kept it darker - it’s such a vibe! It was way more work than my hubby wanted but it’s finally done! Very labor intensive ❤Thank you for the inspiration Mr. Washington. We had a rock shower planned and as it sit in piles and we have a 2story , to go back and forth cutting and placing quickly became too big - this was the next choice 😅

This looks really beautiful although it’s not real tadelakt. It’s lime plaster that is waterproofed with olive oil soap…. Real tadelakt is limeplaster, that is densified by hand with a very small smooth stone - square inch by square inch so that in the end it looks like it has been glazed and has a real shine. The real tadelakt is very hard because of the density, almost like real solid stone.

In the near future I will be building a cottage with traditional materials (slip-straw, strawbale, cob, earthen and lime plasters, etc.), but for now I'm learning how to retro-fit parts of our main house with natural materials/processes like tadelakt. Thanks for sharing your experience and insights, and for great production value. One request: please raise the volume of your voice and reduce (or eliminate) the music. I would enjoy hearing the sounds of troweling, mixing, etc., and just the general ambiance. All the best to you, and congrats on building a solid channel.

dont you have to presure the surface with a stone? I learnt that tardelak needs presure on every layer. Also after the oil you have to presure it again otherwise you lose the funktion after some time. Or do you use some advanced material with extra ad ons?

With Tadelakt it's not about number of coats, the soap should be applied until it doesn't absorb anymore, it's not waterproof otherwise. This could take two coats it could take four or five but the number doesn't matter it only depends if it absorbs or not, tamping down everywhere with a little flat hand press helps too,

Just wondering if you would do anything different and if you’re experiencing any issues. I was considering a shadow gap at the bottom of the wall to remove any chance of the tadelakt being exposed to standing water.

Although it looks very nice, I've seen in Marocco the genuine process and it becomes much more complex: after the third or fourth layer they do a stone polishing (very dense and polished stones); after three weeks they aplly a sort of bee wax to the walls, which become water proof. It's amazing, believe me.

I’m a tile installer and I was curious if you could answer a few questions about this stuff. The work looks great but I’m curious how often you reseal it with the soap to uphold the waterproofing of the final coat? When I’m installing natural stone the sealer I use says it last about a year but I often see it stop working much sooner. Also, how easy is it clean? I would imagine it is quite porous. Does it get harder to clean as the soap sealer wears off or does the soap sealer give it a smoother texture allowing it to be wiped off like a semi gloss paint would?

I am curious if you had any cracks in the shower. I am considering this for our straw bale house, but worries that with expansion and contraction of wooden frame we will get cracks, as we did in the exterior plaster. Let us know if your can, thank for the beautiful video!

Have you in the end done the ceiling? In the end, it looks like the same color as for the walls

What difference does this product have from the microcement you used on your flooring in previous video?

Thank you so much for the video! My wife and I want to do this. Can you explain what you did with the floor. Did the elastic shield go on there?

This is perfection! One question though, what happens when your house settles and it begins to crack? What is the long-term maintenance?

So far no cracking... The scratch coat and two base coats should hold the Tadelakt together and prevent cracking...

@MtWashingtonWeekendProject Does this require ongoing maintenance? Is it necessary to reapply the soap or wax at aome point? Thank you
