Wow they really did capture the NES style of gaming, all the way down to "here's a fuckass design choice that bewilders the mind" in the checkpoint system~
Beyond the unforgiving checkpoints, which i can forgive to an extent given the stages are so short, I really like this games camera mechanic and I think it'd be cool to see it expanded upon or refined in another game
Glad someone else pointed out how surprisingly brutal this game is for having no checkpoints, like granted the stages are pretty short... but still its insane
I appreciate UFO50 for being the hip new indie game while also avoiding modern trends and having some genuinely innovative ideas that don't feel like a gimmick. Though it's a shame it also seems to fall into a lot of the pitfalls of 80's console design which created problems that even arcade games have solved.
"Speaking of checkpoints, dying in this game also resets THE ENTIRE STAGE." I complained about that on UFO50's subreddit and people tried to tell me that's just how NES games were, seeing you call bullshit on this too makes me feel so fucking vindicated.
out of all the games this is the one I could imagine a patch from the devs making less punishing. it's SUCH a mean game, on a level NES games tended not to be, as you said
Reminds me of a mix between Irem's old Gekisha Boy and a konami msx shooter. The star waspir game looked pretty boring but this looks a whole lot more fun. That is, until I read your description. LMAO indie devs, for fuck's sake, they never get it right.
I think I got all the secrets at least, but if I missed any feel free to let me know.
There is a hidden practice mode! Accessed by entering "TEST-LENS", as seen in the credits, into the terminal.
@@redlink1251 Well damn, I guess that further corroborates my obtuse point in the description lmao.

Did you borrow the phrase "fuckass" from Northernlion?

For anyone gunning for cherry, the secrets are in 4:00, 7:47, 10:38

The game is as long as Gradius, it definitely could use a couple checkponts.
Actually, it's a bit of a secret, but there IS a way to practice any of the stages from the menu. It's a code for the terminal you can find

I think it could use one checkpoint per stage, but if they wanna keep it as-is, I really don't mind

I still cant help but like it though. It oozes a lot of charm.
Wow, you're outstandingly good at this game
"Like checkpoint shmups didn't reset the entire stage. "

Yeah ufo50 has a lot of cool ideas but never ends up executing them very well which sucks. Should've been playtested more thoroughly
