Hi. It's John. First off, great video Hank! If you can make a donation to help Partners in Health fight the maternal mortality crisis in Sierra Leone, please consider donating here: pih.org/hankandjohn (And if you're in a position to donate $2,000 or more to support this work, please email us at the address Hank named or at sparksflyup at gmail dot com.)
Have you heard of Effective Altruism? Hank said there aren't "charity advisors" people, but that's king of what EA aims for: How to have the most impact with your time and money.
Dunno. Is dftba owned collectivly by its workers? And if not... why not change that? I'm pretty sure that would not go against their values. And I would maybe believe the communist thing more. For now it seems just like a label to say "He cares about other people very, very much" without the political implication of what it actually means. I think it would be cool to make it a co-op. Like everything is cooler as a co-op!
It's also an investment that doesn't have a clearly defined interest rate. You're told the interest rate for bonds, and you can get an average return for the stock market, but what's the interest on having clean water? That's a lot harder to quantify.
I've been told time and again 'You can always volunteer later' and 'You should earn before you do this NGO nonsense' Some people just don't understand that some needs are for the NOW and if I can make a difference, I'm going to do that now.
Not to mention, "later" isn't always guaranteed. We have no idea what our future may bring, whether its a once in a lifetime career opportunity, a sudden unexpected new family member, a health crisis of our own, or a tragedy that takes us away ...we have no way of knowing what tomorrow brings, so giving of the heart, time, energy, and money in the 'now' guarantees that what we wanted to do good for the world and humanity actually happens. DFTBA Azeema, keep on being amazing!!
To quote "Hello Dolly": Dolly Levi: Money, pardon the expression, is like manure. It's not worth a thing unless it's spread around, encouraging young things to grow.
*HOLD ON* are you telling me . . . that "Poverty and illness and hardship are taxes that pay for nothing" was *UNSCRIPTED?!?* like, Hank i know you're an author because I've read your book but i think its hitting me now
For a while now I've thought of charitable donations as investments that leverage compound interest, but that the interest is earned in people's lives over time rather than in dollars. Some of the same basic principals apply; start early, invest consistently, be in it for the long haul.
2:31 "There are no highly paid charity donation advisors" IDK what they're paid, but I know a bunch of people who do this as their job! They work at places like GiveWell, Founders Pledge and OpenPhil.
I honestly wish I had a witness to see how fast I run home, bolt through the door like it's not even there, and sprint upstairs and onto my computer on Tuesdays and Fridays every single week. And starting Monday, I get to do it *every day*.... oh my gosh I am so excited.
“There are no highly paid charity donation advisors.” Well, they may not be highly paid, but GiveWell is exactly that, an organization that does in-depth research to evaluate how one can buy the most impact with their charity dollars.
Yeah, when Hank said "Is this the best use of money? If that's how you start thinking about things you will never do anything!" I thought: but that's exactly what GiveWell spends all of their time addressing, and they do a lot!
Just donated! This video touched me a lot because I often also think I should save money to donate one day but the idea that my money, now right, can have an impact was too powerful to pass up. Thank you for helping me make the most of my money.
There ARE highly paid charity donations advisers: GiveWell, The Open Philanthropy project, other offshoots of the effective altruism community. Don't get me wrong, I do LOVE that you are doing this, but there are a lot of people doing the same kind of thing in a very dedicated and organized way. Give them some love too.
I know that John engaged with a video made by NerdFighters about Giving What We Can and the principles of Effective Altruism a few years ago. From what I remember, John thought that they were focusing too much on what's measurable and probably he's also worried that they are not paying enough attention to the possibility of systemic change. I think highly of that position, but I don't quite agree. I'd love to hear John's opinion now that the community has grown and Incorporated a greater diversity of values.
The idea of not waiting so that I can donate more later really has me pausing for thought... Thank you guys, very excited to help out, and see the results of the Sierra Leone project!
Invest money so it’ll become more money so you can give more money That’s a nice argument and all, but you’ll never end up giving any money because it’ll always seem like a better idea to invest it
That and I think Hank made a good point, the money can do good NOW. You could invest and donate 50% more money in a few years, but you could likely make someone's life 75% better by giving that money sooner.

You are both absolutely fantastic humans. You're in a position to give and help so many people - and you do it! So many people don't do that! Hats off to you both - you inspire me to be better, thank you! 💛
I genuinely credit this channel for a large part of my personal growth in the past 5 years. You are both so loving and thoughtful and kind by having you in my media bubble I like to think I have grown to be those things as well. Thank you

I appreciate how dedicated and focused you both appear to be with the Sierra Leone project. I'm a metal artist discovering how I can best impact our planet for good. honestly inspiring and reminded me of one of my life goals! get rich enough to be comfortable, then excess can go to charity :) you and john ate an inspiration asjfja i swear
Couldn't the profits go back to the people who work at DFTBA? Do they have a say on where that money goes? I'm genuinely curious, I don't know how Complexly or DFTBA organize themselves internally.
Well, you guys have done it. You have rekindled my interest in helping others. I thought I was done with it, but I guess I can't help it. Now, in a few more videos about helping Sierra leonan's I might (hopefully) remember why I used to think that all human life was precious and worth helping. Thank you
AAHHH thats a LOT of stuff you guys are doing and it's all AWESOME! How do you even have the time when you're writing and crash course and adulting LIKE WOOW you give me inspiration and I'm a uni student who works part-time while taking some highschool classes on the side, just wow

How do you combat the fear that comes with giving up large parts of your wealth piles in favor of increasing other’s quality of life? How do you teach yourself that other people are worth giving up some of your security? Because it’s an easy thing to know in your head, but a much harder thing to put in practice.
What I love is, Hank says this is unhinged and unscripted, but it is such wonderful improv free thoughts and good pondered ideas. Hank’s brain is an Absolutely Remarkable Thing
Hank, with a title like that, I -almost- expected this to be a Rax appreciation video. ^^ This video was so good and I'm so excited for everything nerdfighteria is doing and I cannot believe we're already at pizzamas!
I was taught in economics class that money in the bank that is saved looses value not gains it. I say this from the outlook that inflation is increasing year by year.
Maybe you won’t see this but THANK YOU to you. I have an A in my ethics class in college right now because of how helpful your videos have been. Thank you thank you thank you thank youuuu.
Another huge problem with the notion of 'invest your money and it will be more money to give as a bigger gift' is that when that initial money becomes more money, the same advisers will give you the same advice 'invest that money so it becomes more money' until you become disconnected with the primary aim to donate that money.. it stays in corporate hands - where they, in fact, are the ones benefiting most from the delay of your charity.
Is there a way to emphasize a place that has already been suggested on the tour map to express that there are more people that would be interested in a tour there? I would love it if y'all did a show in Atlanta or Athens, GA. Both have already been placed on the map, but I'm not sure if there is a way it is gauging the quantity of interest in each area. Should I place another pin?
And to add to your point, when "later" comes and the money is worth more, someone at that point can say "if you wait some more, your money will be worth EVEN MORE". There will always be a later.
it's so cool that charity is such a big focus for this channel and everything you guys do. it really makes me feel like there are concrete ways to try to decrease world suck 🙂
What a fucking fantastic point about investments-thank you so much for saying that Hank, I can’t believe I haven’t heard that before. If more rich people thought like you well idk there’d be fewer rich people and wealth would be more evenly distributed ?? The horror. For real, thank you though.
I'm in the process of becoming a financial advisor. My dream is to work with people who have a desire not only to provide for themselves in retirement but to be as outrageously generous as they can possibly be, which is in line with my own goals for my own future. Thanks for proving and confirming that such people not only exist, but are in a growing abundance, Hank and John (I wrote Hank first because it's his video, John).
guys... the new channels are ALL SO GOOD and it makes me a little bit SICK to my already VERY SICK STOMACH that any of those shows wouldn't continue, so please continue them all ok thanks.
It's so neat to see Nerdfighteria doing cool things for the sake of the cool thing rather than for the sake of making more money or being more popular. I'm very proud of my yt dads
I have a question: if I do a monthly contribution, how hard is it to stop it? I've had donation services before, where I had to mail in a signed letter asking to stop the automatic transaction. This was very annoying. If this is the case here, I'd rather do a single contribution.
I so appreciate your understanding of charity. It should hand power over to others and multiply to goodness there, out of our hands, else be part of an inequitable cycle. Look to people like Chorus Foundation and Movement Generation for how you could have the most impact.
Also the reasoning of "wait till your money becomes more money to gift" never ends, in 10 years you can still make the sum bigger, as in 20 or 40 and than you die and your children will do the same and that just doesnt help anyone
I accidentally watched the first half of this on 1.5 speed...and the title was SUPER appropriate. Then I changed it, and I was like “ah, there’s Hank. What’s up?”
The tree planting is lovey, please be aware that, as an organisation that is sometimes offered trees to plant, we need to be consulted FIRST. So often well-meaning people say things like "we have 10,000 saplings, where can we plant them?" And we have to say "you can't", because they are the wrong trees, or it's the wrong time of year, or we just don't have room for them. If this project is going to make a difference, it will take more than well-meaning button clicks.
Hank! There are organizations already dedicated to finding how to best give money! And communities, too! Look up "effective altruism" and givewell.org!
Could you guys do a video on how to narrow down charities to donate to? There are so many charities I care about but I don’t have the means to donate to them all and I get overwhelmed.
I heard Katherine say that you have a need to be productive ALL the time on Delete This, and after watching this video, I realise that she really was not exagerating at all, was she? Damn man, chill out. Take a breath. Great video as always Hank.
HANK AND JOHN you're great and amazing and the things you do give me so much hope and i am so proud to be part of the community ahhhhhhhhh this brings me so much joy

Love Pilot Season so far! HistoryPOP is my favourite, but they're all great, I hope they can continue after the pilots!
It'd be cool if you did a video explaining which charities you think make the most of your donation.
If this project is going to make a difference, it will take more than well-meaning button clicks.
pizzamas is NEXT WEEK?!
also yay I am so happy to see everything growing and our charity money going to help so many people. I love this community.
Hank! There are organizations already dedicated to finding how to best give money! And communities, too! Look up "effective altruism" and givewell.org!
Could you guys do a video on how to narrow down charities to donate to? There are so many charities I care about but I don’t have the means to donate to them all and I get overwhelmed.
0:45 was the truck in sky? Does Montana have flying trucks?
Just when I think Hank couldn't possibly be any busier, he buys land to BUILD a new DFTBA warehouse. WHAT?!
Hey Hank I feel like maybe we have too much access to that Google maps tour request thing? Like it seems weird that I can change settings and delete other people's points and stuff (not that I'm doing that of course! just feels dangerous that anyone could)
I'm so excited. This will be my very first Pizzamas as a Nerdfighter!!
Unscripted RamblyHank will forever and always be BestHank, let's be honest
