- We are used to moving forward...so much so that moving back a little bit could seem really big and really scary to people. I feel like we've moved back some, particularly when it comes to global faith in democracy. I think that's a hit that was brought on by the social internet, but also by increasing inequality, and political pundits, operatives, and TV news that wants people to be as freaked out as possible.
But just because being freaked out is bad doesn't mean that worry is bad, and this video is about that.

My 13 y/o step granddaughter asked me a while ago how bad could it really be. So I told her the truth, best, worst and more likely. Mainly I talked to her about the social horrors climate change could unleash. She asked me to find her a martial arts class, and to teach her survival techniques (at 41 I’ve lived a LOT in 4 decades so amongst other things I actually have significant survival training.)
I’m insanely proud of her for not just taking it all in as an adult and asking for help in personal preparation. But also because she gave me a hug at the end and told me that it’s not my fault... I know that saying that the children are the future is a cliche, but when I look at her and her 15 y/o cousin all I can think is how frakking badass they are.
Trump did nothing wrong. And framing things to sound like he did is what’s worrying. There is NO evidence of wrongdoing. I respect you and I’ve been subbed to you for years, but I would have thought you of all people SHOULD be telling your followers to look at the facts. They’re smart enough to handle them. Thank you for being awesome. Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

As someone who suffers from anxiety, “worry” seems like no big deal. Worry to me means that you’ve actually identified the problem and that means we can strategize and start working on it.
Better to know the problem then have unanswerable stress. I feel ya.

Benji Reil I like that quote better than the “worry is a symptom of caring one,” because I have anxiety and it often makes me wish I were dead so if that’s just caring then I’d like to stop. But the one about hope makes me feel like it won’t always be that way and one day I’ll be able to worry healthier.

I recognise that there's a lot of stuff that's actually happening (like, Kremlin bots, I think) that is having a negative effect. Every powerful country tries to either vassalize or sabotage every other powerful country -- & since the cold war, the latter strategy has mostly happened via public manipulation. Thus Russian bots. And American bots. And Chinese bots. etc.
We focus so heavily on Russian bots because those are the one that the public is most conscious of & the ones that we have the most tangible evidence of causing real harm. But they're definitely not the only ones at work.
Don't worry about it. The whole Russian interference thing is mostly just the left in the US looking for an excuse to deny existence of legitimate concerns of conservatives. Russia didn't make us do anything we didn't want to do. Yes, California is on fire. Yes, illegal immigrants can't invade the country any time they want anymore. But also, unemployment is down, wages are up, the stock market is up, there's a new North American trade deal, and trade with China is more fair than it used to be. We also still get to keep our rights guaranteed by the Constitution a little longer with out having fight in a civil war to maintain them. So Orange Man Bad, but life is good.

Sorry for the long post: Tl;dr, conditioning doesn't work that way.
I mean, there's a reason governments spend billions of dollars on this kind of activity, & it's the same reason companies spend billions of dollars on advertising.
If I can influence your experiences (that is, if I can strategically expose you to specific content or ideas), then I can subtly influence the way your brain works. And if I can do that over a very long period of time, then I can condition you to think in a certain way or behave in a certain way that feels natural to you.
As a simple example, you & I are pretty strongly conditioned to express ourselves in internet comments sections. Now, objectively, there's no reason to do this. It's not going affect anything. Nobody is walking away with sage wisdom or a changed perspective. We will all forget each & every one of these throwaway interactions which have a sum total of exactly 0 value.
And yet, we do it anyway, because we have been conditioned for more than a decade to behave in this way by various subtle social media reward systems -- so we seek it out as automatically as we would seek out good tasting food or sexual pleasure. And it doesn't matter if you know about it or not -- the conditioning is already there. At that point it's kind of like trying to take the cream out of a cup of coffee after you've already mixed it in.
That's the point of these kinds of government campaigns -- to condition people to have certain automatic reactions or mindsets over a very long period of time... If your goal is to destabalize a country, maybe you want to condition conservative people to be more conservative & liberal people to be more liberal for example.
Again, you have all the time in the world, so it can be as subtle as you want.
You government has two VERY powerful qualities. Evil and genius.

This video just came up as recommended and I scrolled through and saw the comment that I made last year at this time about being stressed out. I made that comment while sitting in the Sea-Tac Airport with my little brother being stressed cuz our flight got delayed by several hours. In hindsight things were so good. I got a peppermint mocha, he was napping, and I was listening to announcements making sure we didn’t miss our plane. God what a simpler time, I miss it now. I miss being most stressed about not getting a flight, as opposed to death by pandemic level viral pathogens. I miss being able to hug people. Man the world changed so much.
So I somehow ended up watching this at the beginning of 2021, not the end of 2019. This was profound. "It can always get worse!" Was so spot on! Hank, please predict happy things since you seem to be fairly accurate. Waiting for the benevolent superior fish beings.

Seeing this now, hindsight bias has you looking like a soothsayer. Happy New Year. Thank you for all of the good you bring.
This came up in my recommended and I'll be using it to propel me in 2021. While there was a lot of cause for worry in 2020, I think it gave me a lot of perspective about what truly matters to me, including the importance of kindness to myself and others.
I think it's fair to say 2021 will also suck as we continue to endure the effects of climate change and political unrest and racial injustice, nevermind the global pandemic.
But knowing this rather than dwelling on unknowns is somehow comforting to me. Knowing that I've dealt with this before. I hope we all take what we learn from 2020 to do the best we can in 2021.
