    Crisis burnout leads to apathy. There has to be an in between feeling. Maybe focus? Baby steps to the future will get us there but it’s hard to take them when you’ve burned out and don’t want to move. So many crises you feel that you have no power to do anything about. Focus on one and as the great Burl Ives sang, “put one foot in front of the other.”

    - Hank Green, still somehow looking like he's in his 20s to me

  • @RobertPrestley
    @RobertPrestley 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I think this is a good take and an important one. We've entered into this age where everybody feels an immense amount of personal responsibility for the future of the climate, which just can't be healthy on a global level. And humans have found ways to solve problems in the past and I feel confident that we will find a solution to this very real problem.
    That being said, I think a lot of the anxiety around the climate debate, at least for me, is not surrounding what the solutions will be. Because, quite frankly, the solutions are not that hard. The anxiety is that for humans to embrace those solutions, it will require many people to die or go through hardship first.
    We will only tackle climate unless a) we usher in a revolution in thought within the next few years. Possible, not probable. Or b) climate change eventually starts biting in to the bottom lines of corporations or threatening the lifestyle of the rich and elite. Once that happens, you'll see changes really start to happen. But that might not happen for another 20-40 years. And in the meantime, much more disadvantaged groups of people will be displaced, wars will be started over scarce resources, entire communities will be washed away by rising tides.
    That's the anxiety I have, as a middle-class white man living in America. Because I honestly don't know if climate change will really effect me personally, in ways that will force me to change my lifestyle. But I know that others will have to bear that burden, in part because of my current lifestyle. And that's an anxiety that is really hard to shake.

      But America has exported most of it's greenhouse emissions to other countries. So instead of manufacturing stuff in their country they export the greenhouse intensive part to foreign developing countries (China and India) and then import the finished products. The Eu also follows this model and then they shake their fingers at them for burning so much greenhouse gases. China has learned these lessons too and is exporting their greenhouse gas emissions to africa while rapidly building up their solar capacity.

      @@pendlera2959 The vase's value is only defined by you. You decide why the vase is useful or pleasing, you and other people decide its value, you decide when it's broken or whole. The vase itself has no opinion on the issue. The earth is actually a similar way, we want the Earth to remain the way it is without changing too much because if it changes too much too quickly it can cause massive problems for us. When the sun blows up and the vase is broken so to speak, the rock we float on will continue to not care, the matter might be vaporized and returned to the universe in a different form. There is nothing wrong in admitting that our love for the "environment" or the "climate" or "the earth" is just an expression of our more collective selfish desire to remain on the planet for as long as possible.

      Because bananas are the singlest most sold item (by quantity estimated from bananas per lb sold) EVERY SINGLE DAY by overwhelming margins at almost any big box store that sells bananas.
      They may not produce a huge profit margin, but they are overwhelmingly what people are thinking of when they come to such a store; so logically people must be thinking bananas quite often.

      Join an activist group like Extinction Rebellion (rebellion.earth). Do nonviolent direct action. Making lifestyle changes is good, but it’s a drop in the bucket. Voting and signing petitions is good, but politicians are corrupt and the changes proposed won’t get us to zero emissions in 10 years. We have to take our planet back if we want our species to not go extinct.

    • @Jake12220
      @Jake12220 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the best thing to do is not have kids, or pets or well exist, but lm not recommending any of those options, just they would be better than simply changing your diet.
      More importantly though, stop panicking, even with the worst reasonable projections predicted you won't experience much of an issue if you live in a first world country.
      Many species will be at risk and many poor and low lying countries will suffer, but in countries like the USA, Australia, Canada and most of Europe there will be plenty of food and water. If you want something to be afraid of that will likely effect you directly it's the rise if robotics and artificial technology. Not the going to take over the world type stuff, just the going to take most of the jobs issue. In the future there won't be much work that an artificial system can't do better so we will need to refine what people are meant to do with their lives when there isn't any work for most of them to do.
      On the bright side to that is that robotic systems and artificial intelligence may well help fix a lot of climate related issues, both in terms of emissions and building of infrastructure to protect people at risk of extreme weather events.

    • @rebekahj8662
      @rebekahj8662 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Jake12220 That's completely untrue. We are already seeing flooding, catastrophic fires, water contamination, failing crops, drought. We are already seeing climate refugees. Being rich, or living in North America or Europe will not save you from climate change. Anyone who thinks that is delusional or misinformed. We are in the middle of a mass extinction event, we are losing species over 1000x the background rate. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. And now that the amazon is on fire, we are looking at an even worse case scenario than our worst case scenarios were. We are looking at our species going extinct by ~2050-2080. Robotics won't even exist if we don't stop emissions in the next 10 years. We will reach a point of no return if we go beyond 1.5 celsius warming, we will see irreversible chain reactions. There will be no such thing as jobs, we will all be trying to survive. Society as we know it will collapse before we see any AI capable of "helping us". AI and machine learning is in its infancy. Sorry to burst your bubble but no magical AI is going to save us, we have to save ourselves, and we have to start now. The OP is right to panic. It's a perfectly normal reaction of self preservation, but we must use that panic productively. Nonviolent direct action will be the only way to force the hand of the powers that be in enough time.

    I used to watch the vlogbrothers back when they were still Brotherhood 2.0, and I was a kid who just found solace in nerds being nerds. I stopped watching for years, only checking in occasionally to feel nostalgic about that earlier period of my life. But recently, I've really come back to the channel. I'm in college now and surrounded by anxiety, stress, competition, CRISIS. It's hard to be so in love with the world, and also see everything that's going wrong with it. I felt like a mother with a delinquent child, unable to control them, but worried sick. Anyway, this is all just to say that I've come back to the channel again and am so grateful that you have both remained so genuine, and sincerely just want to help people. I also appreciate how John and Hank express love in both liberal arts and scientific perspectives. I think that the duality we ascribe to those interest sets breaks down when you see the poetry in the "Journey to the Microcosms" and then the logic of literature. It's comforting to hear that people are all dealing with the same things, all loving in the same way. Maybe its true that we can't change all of the things that we wish we could. But we don't have to. As my favorite poet Mary Oliver said, "You do not have to be good" "You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves." Basically, thank you for loving what you love genuinely. Thank you for sharing that love with us. In a time rife with conflict, I think it's important to realize that all of that perceived conflict is really just stemming from the same fundamental love.

    If we knew how to solve problems before they happened.. that'd be called prevention. And we can only prevent something when we've already gone through it and found a solution.
    That said, we could have prevented some stuff that are happening now because they had been predicted, but then again it's not super easy and some things can't be predicted or controlled. I think.
