Doing Netflix/Hulu/Prime Video the CHEAP way ... and the RIGHT way

- Let’s not kid ourselves: we live in a time when traditional TV isn’t exactly a necessity.The new necessities are Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. But signing up for ALL THREE streaming services is overkill, right? Not exactly, and I’ll tell you why.

Let’s start by looking at the cheapest way to get all three services.
The Cheap Way:
$8.99 - Netflix Basic
$5.99 - Hulu w/ commercials
$8.99 - Prime, video only
The total price here is $23.97. That’s A LOT of content for $24! Not a bad way to go. But there are problems here. The Netflix Basic plan only allows one simultaneous stream, which sucks but wouldn’t be fatal if it weren’t for the fact that that single stream will be in Standard Definition. Because of that, I think you’d find yourself drifting toward Hulu and Prime stuff, which will be in High Definition.
I'm okay with the Hulu with commercials plan, depending on the amount of Hulu you plan on watching. But the Amazon Prime video only version is incredibly foolish in my mind, since you can get a ton of extras for only $1 more per month.
The Right Way:
Let’s start with Netflix. Unless you’re watching on a TV that’s 20 years old, you’re going to want, maybe even NEED, that HD signal. Your flatscreen TV was designed for more pixels than an SD signal can provide. So, that leaves us with 2 other options for Netflix: The $12.99 HD plan, or the $15.99 Ultra HD plan. Unless you’ve got a killer TV and killer wifi signal, the Ultra HD might be overkill for a lot of people. I’m betting the bulk of us will be fine with regular HD.
Now, which Hulu package to go with? It kind of depends on just how much Hulu you plan to watch. If you’re in there constantly, then commercials might drive you a bit crazy, and the $11.99 plan would be worth it to get rid of those.
If you’re not binging much in Hulu, and you’re popping in for a show here or there, the commercial-supported plan at $5.99 is going to be great. Yes, there are commercials, but even there, you’re getting a better deal than you’re used to with traditional TV.
Your typical network half-hour show is actually only about 22-23 minutes long, to account for 7-8 minutes of commercials. When you watch the same commercial-supported show on Hulu, you’re getting an average of 5 minutes of commercials over the same program. Saves you a few minutes per show.
Lastly, we have Amazon Prime Video. The video-only plan is only $8.99 a month, but I think it’s pretty foolish to go this route. Why? Because you can the full Amazon Prime suite of services for $12.99 a month, or if you pay for a full year, it’s $119, which works out to $9.91 a month. That’s less than a dollar per month more than the video-only plan. And what do you get? Free shipping and discounts on Amazon purchases, access to 2 million songs on Amazon Music, and a bunch of free Kindle content. But let’s be honest, the free Prime shipping alone would be worth it on its own.
So, if we’re paying $12.99 for Netflix HD, $5.99 for Hulu with commercials, and $9.91 for Prime, we’re coming out to $28.89 a month, LESS THAN $5 MORE than the cheapest way, and STILL under $30. Make it Hulu with no commercials and we’re at $34.89; STILL a great deal. And that’s the right way to do it.
Because I’m driven to be controversial, I’ll pick a winner between the three of them. This is tough and completely subjective, but I’m going with Prime Video. Don’t get me wrong- Netflix is amazing! Hulu is amazing! But the value of Prime video plus the other Prime benefits for less than I’d pay for the standard Netflix plan? No brainer.

I'm one of the thousands who cut the cord 3rd/4th quarter 2019 so I just found this video. I have all 3. I've had Prime for years, initially purchased for the free shipping. Netflix from when they only had Dvd's and I just got Hulu with commercials because sprint gave it to me free with my unlimited plan.
We have all 3, they all offer a variety that keeps my family entertained.
Netflix is the Best. Even if you want the lowest price, you don’t get ads. But, you get ads on Hulu. I feel that Netflix is better over Hulu.

@@chetarab I would probably go with the 12.99. The higher the price you pay, the better video quality it is. At 8.99, its only 480p, but with the 12.99 subscription its 1080p. Obviously, the 17.99 one has 4k+ quality.
It also depends on who is watching it. Let's say if it was only you, then the standard subscription (level 2) would be a good plan. However, if you have a whole family, then premium would be best. The higher subscription you have, the more devices you can watch Netflix on at once.

I completely agree!! I never watched my shows live anyway always on DVR so why pay for cable and DVR when for $35 a month I can get all this commercial free!!
The only reason we have prime is because of shipping and order discounts. Every single time we want to watch a movie on prime, we still have to pay for that one particular movie we want to view. We find ourselves not watching anything on prime.
amazon needs more content included with the subscription. too much of it is for additional purchase.

I've been a long standing Amazon Prime member, and I've really been enjoying the video portion of it since I cut the cord. There are nights when everything on network television is just crap, and we often find ourselves watching a Prime original. We also get Netflix for free through T-Mobile, which I am also enjoying thoroughly.
Netflix and Hulu and call it a day.

US Netflix is much more expensive than UK Netflix.
UK Plan goes from - Basic £5.99, Standard (HD) £8.99, Premium (4K UHD) £11.99
Though, I think US Netflix is set that way as they have more contents compared to UK and other countries.
I subscribe to Netflix and Hulu. Have my friends Prime log in 🤫 but really never use it for video. I watched Sneaky Pete and that was dope but every time I log in and browse through I just tend to switch back over to one of the better ones.

I sub to Amazon Prime (yearly membership) and Hulu. I got Hulu back in December when they ran their $1/month for a year promo.

With Time Warner I got Road Runner for $14.99/mo. Went up to $19.99 when Spectrum bought it. Now it costs me $24.99/mo. I can stream a movie on my Firestick, while on the internet my computer and phone at the same time. Virtually never have a lagging or buffering problem at all.
If you're low income you can still get the $14.99/mo price.
They don't advertise this price for obvious reasons. You just need to ask.
I have all three. Can't help it. Wife loves Handmaid's Tale and I like the original horror series on Hulu, we both like "Stranger Things" and we both like "Altered Carbon".. So, each services have some very good original content you can't get anywhere else. So, all three....
All three here. If you have a 4k TV and an internet connection worth having (think 50mb or better) you should be on the Netflix Ultra HD $16/mo service for sure because Amazon Video also has good 4k content. Hulu will eventually catch up I am sure. If possible connect your TV by ethernet cable directly to your router, don't waste time with wifi if streaming 4k unless you've invested in a quality 802ac router and again, you have the internet to back it up.

I just cancelled Xfinity after paying about $250 a month for the past 12 years. I'm over it. I only have Amazon Prime (firestick 4K) and Netflix now which still leaves me missing live TV. Can't decide which service to get. Leaning towards Hulu but between that and internet fees I'm almost back to what I was paying on cable. I thought the whole point was to save money. These streaming services seem to be sticking it to us like the cable companies. Whatever I'll just watch TH-cam.
Shaun Harrison Aren’t you going to have internet regardless if you have live TV or not? I was paying $136 a month for Dish Network plus $70 a month for Spectrum internet. I cancelled Dish, and went to TH-cam TV. It is now $50 a month. I have alway subbed to NetFlix and we do Amazon Prime for the shipping (Video is an added Bonus). This saves me about $80 A month. If I didn’t have any TV, I would still have an internet bill. I also called Spectrum and told them I couldn’t pay $70 a month for internet. They immediately gave me the new customer discount for $44 a month for a year. Maybe that is an option with your provider?

Lol.. I hear you - THEY ALL; streaming, cable, etc really started sticking it to us during the big Plan-Demic.
I wonder why you don’t get an ANTENNA and at least get your local, live channels? It’s nice to get current events, PBS, and some fun stations like Comet, and Grit, or MeTV.
@@k.hendrickson8735 I ended up with TH-cam TV. I like it but they have already done a price hike. I have a wall mounted TV and not sure about an antenna. Don't want it visible but maybe there are options I'm unaware of?
I had hulu plus for $7.99..commercials were less but lately it has increased.
I piggy back on my mom's Netflix (12.99) since it doesn't get used plus I have Roku. I also have a hand me down Samsung t.v. I'm not complaining.

I became a cord cutter recently and I use all 3 of these services along with hulu's live tv option to replace my cable service. Together these services give me more content than I ever had with cable and it's still cheaper than my cable bill was. Bottom line, cord cutting was a good decision.
Local channels, TV Antenna, frequencies VHF, UHF & FM Radio. Free Local Channel TV all the time.

have four adults in the house and one very young child. have all three services ( and some other streaming ). totally worth it. don't have cable any more. we have prime not really for the prime video but for the free/fast postage.

My whole family (Mostly my sister and I) have the basic Netflix subscription for $8.99 and don't care about the non-HD quality. We just watch it on our computers and phones. Neither of us care about Hulu or Amazon Video. She has an Amazon Student Prime account which she pays $50 a year for ordering stuff. I could just log on her account if I want to watch something on there. I canceled my Prime subscription since other places have cheaper deals than on Amazon. That's $13.16 a month if you want to calculate it. lol $157.88 per year.

Hulu is best because it has a no ad version and it has thousands of TV shows
Netflix is next because it has a ton of movies
Prime is last because you need to pay for alot of stuff
These are the top 3 out of all the other streaming networks in my opinion

really you get prime in uk that £72 a year. then just buy 1 or2 items a month and that really pays for prime so really video is free.

The cheap way is to share with a friend. They use my Netflix, I use their Hulu. And we split Prime.
Netflix is way better because everything is free amazon is the worst because you have to pay for most of the content

They have all gotten worse. For example Hulu keeps dropping full show episodes and only providing the current year. Netflix has lost all but the B-Movies and there are very few decent things to watch. Netflix has also gotten worse. I am stopping all three.

they have some decent exclusive shows, horror movies, and if you are into current tv or anime its a no brainer. i use hulu live tv instead of cable so maybe i'm biased.

I subscribe to Netflix and Prime Video (Video only). I renewed Netflix exclusively to watch Lucifer. I have the video only Prime Video because I don't shop at Amazon enough to justify spending $10 - $12/month to have 2 day shipping 2-3 times a year.
